    The Daleks work really well when the story doesn’t try to convince you they look intimidating. The 2005 episode ‘Dalek’ works so well because everyone in the episode except for the Doctor thinks they look like waste-bins with plungers, and then a single one decimates almost everyone in their entire facility.
    The best modern Dalek stories use them like horror movies use villainous children. They’re dangerous because they don’t seem threatening. They demand respect but don’t receive it. They have to earn it with murder. It’s great entertainment. Plus, changing the Daleks’ appearance ruins half the fun of them as characters. For a bunch of space Nazis, if they don’t have anything light about them, they’ll just be way too dark and depressing. No charm.

      The 2005 episode 'Dalek' as well as the majority of that seasons finale are in my opinion the greatest episodes including Daleks in any of the modern series. Mostly because they did such a good job of setting the Daleks up as being super threatening villains in the episode 'Dalek' then we see millions of them in the finale, it's just such a great 'oh shit' moment

      @@calibribody6776 parting of the ways was a fantastic final episode for that season. One of the things I do really like is that much like they did in the episode Dalek, it was shown just how hard it actually is to kill a Dalek. I mean in that whole battle on the tv station I think we only see one being killed by bullets

    Someone bought a remote controlled Dalek for my son one christmas when he was about 4. This Dalek was about 2 foot high and could be voice operated.
    One night after my son had gone to bed, this Dalek turned itself on and burst out of his toy cupboard shouting "EXTERMINATE!". My son came running out of the bed room and wouldn't go back in until I dismantled the Dalek.
    He's almost 12 now, still has a phobia of Daleks... and we still have it... sat waiting up in the loft, waiting for him to bring a girl home.

    Quote from wikipedia that made me chuckle:
    "For the final battle sequence between the Renegade and Imperial Daleks, the BBC Effects Department's pyrotechnics were so loud and the explosions so realistic that the London Fire Brigade was dispatched to the scene by local residents who feared that an IRA bomb had gone off. McCoy recalled that after the first explosions, a number of car alarms in the neighborhood went off, and the emergency services drivers were surprised when they arrived to see Daleks coming at them from out of the smoke."

    In Destiny of the Daleks, the Doctor says: "If you're supposed to be the superior race of the universe, why don't you try climbing after us?" The way I interpreted that was earlier Dalek models could not climb stairs. But by Rememberence of the Daleks, they fitted some ant-gravity tech so they could.

    Can people please stop trying to correct us by saying that the Daleks first flew in "Remembrance of the Daleks" without even watching the whole video. This video is about "Remembrance of the Daleks". We talk at length about that at 6:55 after our usual chatter. Anyone who has commented trying to correct us is just demonstrating that they didn't watch the video or check any of our sources.
    Also, just to clarify for anyone confused, I am an avid fan of Doctor Who and have been watching since the revival in 2005. Despite this, Karl knows more about the show than I do because he has watched Doctor Who in the past and done a lot of research into it. Just because he isn't currently a fan doesn't mean he doesn't know what he's talking about.
    Now that that's out of the way, we hope you enjoyed the video. I, for one, am very much looking forward to series 11! Just a shame we have to wait until October...

    I've always thought that the daleks were designed to look like if a tank was a person. If you think about it that way, they don't look so rediculous. Also, I think a plunger is an interesting idea of a functional appendage, and the whisk looks better than a gun that's just a tube. They don't really look scary, but in the same way that a bomb doesn't look scary, you just know it's dangerous. They do look pretty silly though. Great video. Thanks.

      The whisk part makes sense for a sci fi disintegration weapon. It's gonna make a lot of heat, so the extra metal stuff helps to make sure the dalek doesn't melt or blow themselves up when they shoot their gun

    The Daleks were originally not designed to fly, or to even be a main villain. They just became a main villain because of how popular they got.
    In the first series of episodes they appeared in, their weakness was litterally that they were powered through the floor, so they would never have been able to fly because it would immediatly have turned them off.

    The thing I really love about Doctor Who is that it's been going so long that there are boat loads of inconsistencies with the canon. The Doctor started off as a "person from our future" before being an alien. In the first Dalek episode the Daleks couldn't even go anywhere that there wasn't a metal track for them to travel on. In one episode set in the year 1979 we are introduced to the organization "UNIT" and a guy working there. In a later episode we learn that the same guy left UNIT in 1976. So he left UNIT three years before he started working there. It means no-one can be pretentious about what's the technically correct answer because isn't one (or there are several different ones).
    I guess what I'm getting at is I really love the part of the fandom that is willing to make fun of the stupid stuff in Doctor who and that part of the fandom is alive and well.

    • @waffle911

      Temporal inconsistencies resulting from fluctuations and changes in the space-time continuum are to be expected when faffing about through all of space and time and breaking the occasional rule or two. That's probably how we got the recent creation of the Cybermen a second time quite differently from the first. Anything is possible, nothing is contradictory!

That even though they will enhance their shells, they will never completely change their shape no matter how dated they look. They will instead keep finding ways to overcome obstacle using what they have become to see as their ideal form.

    It was established on screen as early as 1974 that the daleks move via psychokinetic power. (Death to the Daleks episode 2) I always thought that was terrifying and went a way to explain what goes on behind the scenes. Daleks are super evolved beings, literally huge brains without bodies, being paraplegic they encase themselves in protective casings. But the scary thing is they don't need the casings, they are psychokinetic and move their casings with the power of their mind. If they can do that and they don't need legs to move, do they need arms and hands? If a Dalek could climb stairs with the power of its mind, it could easily hold you immobile a few inches off the ground, operate machinery, open locks, burst a blood vessel, killing with a thought etc etc. Which is likely why this has never been given much attention subsequently and it was intentionally ignored, because it's an ability that is far too useful. It's a nightmare ability.

    I can totally relate to the overselling, i am a fan myself and it is stupid how people over hype their favorite shows....
    I keep things simple....
    Doktor Who:
    Timetravel Sci-Fi with a Deus Ex Machina, that is literally a futuristic Screw Driver. And a lot of quirky characters.
    Super Natural:
    If you want two damn good looking Men hunt monsters and ghosts, you are probably going to like it, if you do not.... then don't.

      @@FactFiend There's also a sequence in the Pertwee-era Planet of the Daleks which has one slowly chase the Doctor up a vertical (and almost completely smooth) ventilation shaft. In fairness, the Doctor's ascent was also pretty slow, as he was using a makeshift parachute buoyed up by the hot air of the shaft.

    I agree. Daleks and their weapons don't look scary. Neither do those boxy trucks with the large straws on top... called tanks. Tanks? Like a tub you put water in. Who's afraid of a round tube? And then there're those little balls with a switch. I mean, those are just softballs or tennis balls. They call them grenades, but they are just the ting you toss and have your dog chase after, right? And then there's those silly TV remote controls they call tasers. What are you going to do to me with that... change my channel? Make me pause or rewind? Yeah, right.
    And don't get me started on those lumps of modeling clay they named C4. Couldn't even give the stuff a real name. I mean the corn syrup they call nitro glycerin at least sounds scary (though, we all know it;s just sugar water), but C4 is just gray play doh.

    Supernatural had some decent seasons, and some really bad ones, and it ran for so long that major plot events became running jokes (like how many times the lead characters had died.) The show could set up some really great season-long ideas, but it would then fail to deliver on them to due unfocused writing (and just some disappointing writing.) You'd get a dramatic bit that should have shaped the months of episodes that followed, but what would actually follow were months of regular comedic episodes that at most paid a lip service to the idea, and then you'd get a quick rush of two or three episodes to quickly wrap up the dramatic storyline before the season ended.

    • @FactFiend
      @FactFiend  7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yeah, I've always thought they should have created another strong multi-season arc rather than hopping from one crisis to the next, but I guess that's the way these shows work. You get renewed, you make up more shit! I still enjoy each episode, but they've had some pretty weak stories in the later seasons.
      -Brad

    • @Lorkanthal
      @Lorkanthal 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      i'd imagine it is kinda tricky to setup a multi season story arc if you aren't sure you will be able to do all the episodes required to finish off the narrative. Last thing you'd want to do is leave the show with a plot line unfinished.

    •  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Supernatural is just a glorified soap opera, complete with repeat storylines and no fear of death.
      If you guys like that hogwash, I highly recommend Constantine (streamed for free on CW Seed). The ads are annoying, but the show is what Supernatural tries to be. The effects? Spectacular (oml the Angels are beautiful). The writing? Decent. I loved it, but it’s like a solid B for non-DC fans. The cast? Gets along really well. Felt natural. The story? Overarching story that makes it so no episode feels completely like filler, with more devoted to it than a few throwaway lines lmao
      -----------------
      One of my favorite things (and this is a SPOILER warning ⚠️) is that one of the bad guys was actually the Serpent of Eden. While Supernatural just have every monster be a human with horrible CGI here and there, the Serpent turned from a human into this crazy creature made up of like 50 snakes constantly moving around. It was hella dope. And there’s Fallen Angels that also look hella dope.

      Cybermen have a better fear factor but technologicially speaking it depends on what time which is in, future cybermen can defeat past daleks and both have methods to travel in time, so who wins is entirely based on processing, the daleks process internally via what remains of their brains while cybermen are a cybernetic hive mind. Daleks win at processing despite that though do the tech gap within the base, In a full war of all cybermen and daleks from every single time at once, even if you make the numbers more favorable for cybermen by cutting off the quadrillions of extra daleks, cybermen don't stand a ghost of a chance.

      Jazzy Waffles, well someone like blackphoenix77 has a good reason not to watch the video. I mean why would he watch a video about a show that the author of the video DOESN'T EVEN WATCH? What kind of a valid opinion are they going to present? They're just gonna pluck a random piece of trivia off Google and just waffle on for 10 minutes about it, giving absolutely no new perspective or any semblance of original thought, which is exactly what happened here.
      As to the author of the video not watching the show because of the fans... well that's just his character weakness, being too influenced by opinions of others. A slave to the hype machine, with his little tantrum that's supposed to be a rebellion. And still too eager to profit off the hype rather than to either let the topic slide or to do the leg work.

    • @meanguy1243

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      See, that's the problem with today's world. Everyone wants to have the right to have an opinion on everything, but not willing to do the leg work and make sure their opinion actually makes sense. Look at bloody politics. If people just bothered to do some research rather than just listening to politicians' soundbites (usually only very loosely related to truth) and deciding from their gut feeling which of them they seem to like the most or dislike the least, don't you think the world would be so much better? I know a damn TV series is completely irrelevant in comparison, but the mechanism is the exact same!
      Also opinions are like arseholes, just because you have one doesn't mean the world needs to see it. Some opinions are more valuable than others, oh i know i'm saying a controversial "anti-democratic" thing here, and you have to put in some effort in order for it not to be a waste of everybody's time.

    • @meanguy1243
      @meanguy1243 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      As you've said the comparison with political opinion to an opinion on media is pretty irrelevant, one obviously should be held to a higher regard since it doesn't talk about fiction. But you can still ignore both and that's within your right to do so.
      I agree people should be able to ignore or watch videos as they see fit, but why comment when you don't intend to watch? Just seems daft and counter intuitive, it makes it look like the video actually bothers you with existence and I'm referring to Blackphoenix here of course.
      As to opinions are like arseholes, it's a crap comparison, arseholes are illegal to bare in public and opinions for the most part are legal and far more easier to ignore than some person showing their arse in public. Though heavy censorship laws within European countries and eastern countries have kinda bogged that idea that opinions are all protected by free speech. Don't worry about coming off as anti democratic, most countries masquerade as such without obeying what it means to be a democracy, ironically through bad opinions that shouldn't have been entertained but did or through corporate investment.
      I do agree that a "fan" might offer more insight but sometimes people don't want someone who'll give them an 8-page manifesto about how a Dalek can fly up a flight of stairs. The idea is daft and corny and this video just plays to that very premise. I mean, it's a Dodgem tank that can fly about and scale stairs, that's hilarious.

    This genuinely wasn't funny at all.

    They are absolutely completely ridiculous, though I can also get into it when they're on screen, especially since those who haven't seen them before don't take them seriously until they're proven deadly or the people who saw them before are freaked out. It sells that they're feared more than if it weren't acknowledged.

    Just wait until they paint the Tardis pink in series 11, the fans will go ballistic.

      Can you imagine the tardis being pink "cough, cough happiness patrol cough"

      In "The Happiness Patrol," the happiness patrol painted the TARDIS pink because pink is a more joyous color than blue. In the end, the Doctor has it repainted blue.

      Sam Loesser exactly the fact the doctor is for the foreseeable future a woman, it doesn't mean they'll make it pink. Besides they already revealed what her tardis looks like, it's still blue.

      It's mostly a joke but I'm actually expecting them to paint the Tardis Pink if just for one episode. Hilarious to see it was pink in Classic Who...I need to watch more of it xD.

      I think the doctor making them scrub it off was more of him teaching the kid a lesson. This is a kids/family show afterall.
