I am thankful Master Plan was extended, because it led to my all time favorite first doctor moment in episode 10 when the daleks are holding his companions hostage yet he's making the demands, he's the one in control of the situation
Great video! I LOVE 'The Daleks' Master Plan" and it sounds like I might have loved the tighter Terry Nation version even more! Still, what we ended up with is great too, and possibly my personal favourite Dr Who story!
Interesting they planned to have a scene where Daleks attack the Test Match when something similar happened in the third H2G2 book which was originally an idea for a Dr Who story!
A fascinating episode, as always! I wonder if the six-episode would've been more likely to survive the junking process; would've been easier to resell it internationally without "The Feast of Steven" in the mix, for sure. And just to be silly, here's an idea for what the DARDIS's acronym could be: Dalek Achronal Roaming Dimensionally Intermittent Spacecraft
I really like the tonal shift Master Plan has, it helps the story feel fresh and spontaneous in a way it probably couldn't if it kept the same tone and setting throughout. It does cause some whiplash when the last episode switches back to the grim tone and gives us one of the saddest endings the show has ever had though.
This makes so much sense. Loved the first 5 episodes of DMP, so epic yet utterly terrifying and suspenseful like the first Dalek story. But then Ep 6-11 become a dull remake of the Chase and I start tuning out until Ep 12, where the tension resumes. My sympathy with Dennis & Co having to keep this monster going for a quarter of a year
Fun fact: the recent BBC police series "Bloodlands", set in Northern Ireland... had a character with the surname Dardis: the only other time I have ever heard that word used anywhere else apart from on your channel! Was one of the "Bloodlands" scriptwriters a Dalek 63-88 geek? 21:55 Is Tom Baker perhaps auditioning here to be considered for the role of Jon Pertwee's replacement? Was he credited in the episode? EDIT 22:15 It appears that Dardis is actually a genuine Irish surname.... so my geek theory sadly must be abandoned! haha
Perhaps Sidney Newman or Verity Lambert decided to name the ship using the Latin word "tardis" meaning late or slow, or perhaps they knew someone named Dardis...or some combination.....
Hello Gavin, Seeing as you have taken part of the DALEK Mark III Travel Machine Combat Training Manual, could you mabey do an extra video about Dalek tags from under the eyestalk? I thought that would be an very very interesting video.😄
I have no memory of agent Walton [5:07], but I do remember the Brigadier: seems Nation got his story out by promoting Nicholas Courtney's character from spy to head of UNIT.
Thank you endlessly for uploading this. I honestly think your videos are some of the best indepth, interesting and understanding on TH-cam. This is such an excitement to see after a long hard day. You are my saviour!!!
Greatly appreciated 🙏 I actually requested this video 😁 That's service to your fanbase at its finest. Have you considered a video covering the original history of the Daleks in comics ?
Great video as always. I understand that early on, Vicki was still going to be the female companion in this story. Of course we got two female assistants instead. Both short lived, and destined not to survive.
I'm surprised that you haven't talked about Abducted by the Daleks yet. It's such a wild and obscure bit of vaguely Doctor Who related media and nobody has really talked about it in depth online. I bet the Nation estate were furious when it came out and if anyone could shine a light on it, it would be you!
I'm with the other nay sayers about Sara Kingdom being a companion status. Katarina at least was in two stories so she can be counted. It makes absolute no sense to include Sara as a companion.
Imagine the confidence the production office must have had to have an entire episode that had zero links to the original series regulars. Sure it had Daleks but still. Bold move.
First time I ever came across the word DARDIS was in a review - or more accurately, a hatchet job - in a 90s Doctor Who Magazine, of The Chase. The author clearly hated everything about the serial; but instead of doing an actual critique, he decided to make oh-so-clever strawman digs at the production and performances (for instance, he misrepresented the Aridians' description of their world as once being a vast ocean as "it was once very wet", and laughed at the ridiculous dialogue). The article also referred to the DARDIS as "Daleks Are Rusty Dustbins In Space", and I was puzzled for years because there was no mention of this anywhere outside this article. I knew there's never been an onscreen reference to the name, so the guy was just being an idiot. Now I find out that the name wasn't even in the serial the writer was ridiculing, that goes double.
I'm curious, you introduce the character Van Hoom, but I recognised him as Mavic Chen. Later on you use the name Mavic Chen, is there another story here?
Wasn't there a hint of the Master in this series or Davros and maker of the Deleks there was also a similar idea this lead to Unit on Earth and even a lot more than Deleks involvement in the series I think the series did lead to the second doctors stories and his look a like there's definitely something in this idea on Bond with a hint of time bending master mind from at it centre either a time lord rouge like the master or someone else and though not directly related to Doctor Who this did kind of reads as Blake 7 at its core and UFO TV series? Wonder if Blake 7 has a connection to the idea you've been talking about and eventually leads to the Shadow Procrastination idea from RTD?
Is that opening image coloured, it looks weird, all over the place... Masterplan will always be a weird story, specially as we will never, ever, get to see it all, I also think Masterplan is what totally murdered dalekmania... Hey, Sara's name could be a code name too, just as James bond isn't 007s real name 😜
Excellent video guys! Learnt a lot about The Dalek's Master Plan and it makes me long for more of the missing episodes of this story to turn up! Though I do think having it as 12 parts was way too much of a stretch!
I've always thought that Dardis would work as an in-universe nickname, a bit of wordplay that people besides the Daleks use to describe their timeship. Of course the number of characters familiar enough with both the Tardis and Dardis to make that word play is rather limited.
'Pigbin Josh' looks awfully like Tom Baker. Or is that Derek Ware in a brilliant John Friedlander prosthetic making him look like Tom Baker in a peculiar hat? 🤔🤔🤔 😆😆😆😆😆
I think in billions of ways Dalek Masterplan should have been a six part serial like it was originally intended to be .I say the idea of doubling the episode length from 6 parts to 12 parts was stupid in billions and trillions of ways
Im not surprised that the bbc deliberately sabotaged another series. It seems typical of the sort of infighting, childishness and jealousy that still exists.
You skipped over something interesting there. If Terry nation was commissioned to write a six part serial and then at the last minute asked to double its length to 12 episodes, then it must mean that it was because someone else had been commissioned to write a six part serial to follow Daleks Masterplan but something went wrong with it, what was that story and what happened with it/to it?
I believe the doubling if episodes was partly because the director general of the BBC said that his mother (or mother n law?) Loved the Daleks. This was why they increased the number of episodes
Why was the decision made to double the story? War Games for example was a script/s falling through... but there was no explanation here. Was it a fallen through script too, or was it the desire to have more Dalek episodes given their popularity? Shame they didn't just make it 2 individual stories...
It stemmed from the internal Programme Review Board meeting on 26 May 1965, a few days after The Chase had started on television. In discussing the episode Huw Wheldon (the BBC's Television Managing Director) said that every effort should be made to include more of the Daleks in the series. This was noted by Sydney Newman who requested, via the Head of Serials, Gerald Savory, that the new Dalek story planned to go into production should be expanded from six episodes to twelve.
You meant to say, "the 1964 prop" not "the 1984 prop." And why are you showing a photo of Tom Baker as a character, I think you said, "Pigpin Josh," in "The Claws of Axis?" Tom Baker was not in the "Claws of Axos" or any Dr. Who until he was cast in the title role replacing Jon Pertwee. Pigpin Josh was actually played by stuntman Derek Ware.

I've often felt most DOCTOR WHO 6-parters were really 4-parters painfully padded out to 6. (The Tom Baker era finally fixed this by turning them into combination 4+2, 2+4, or, 2+2+2.) The Jon Pertwee "Frontier In Space" was, I felt, the best-structured of all his longer stories, having only as its main fault, that it led into "Planet of the Daleks", which is boring as hell for its entire length. Looked at that way, WHO had 2 different 12-parters with Daleks, where the 2 parts don't even feel like they're really connected.
Great video, but I think it's a bit sad that you use the term "UK theatres" when you mean "UK cinemas". Why do that? A UK theatre is where you go to see a play not a film. Please don't try to be American. There is nothing wrong with using British English.
