  • LEYBURN is a gateway town to the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Located between Richmond and Ripon, Leyburn is is surrounded by beautiful countryside, with many walking and cycling routes in the area. The town is located near a number of popular tourist attractions, including Bolton Castle and Aysgarth Falls. Leyburn has a range of shops, cafes, and restaurants, making it a popular destination for visitors.
Come with me as we enjoy a walking tour around Leyburn for a look at this beautiful place and see why it's such a popular Yorkshire tourist destination.
Leyburn is a Yorkshire market town on the edge of Wensleydale and surrounded by a number of pretty villages including Middleham, Aysgarth, West Burton and Castle Bolton. It's a popular place with walkers and hikers as well as day trippers and holidaymakers.
The town itself, pleasantly situated on a low ridge above the River Ure, offers a good choice of local shops, restaurants, cafés, and even a cinema. And of course it's the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales, one of the most popular travel and tourist destinations in the UK
If you love the great outdoors, you'll love Leyburn - the principal northern gateway to the Yorkshire Dales National Park. A wonderful walking and cycling town, a year-round destination for exploring and sight-seeing, with traditional pubs, independent shops and great places to eat.
Leyburn is part of the acclaimed Wensleydale Railway heritage line, home to world-renowned Tennants Auctioneers, the magnificant Garden Rooms and a country walk from nearby Bolton Castle and also Middleham Castle, the boyhood home of Richard III.

Loved the tour of Leyburn, here is a bit more information that you may or may not know about.
Leyburn lies at the foot of Wensleydale. It is in this town where Frank Bingham, a partner of James Alfred Wight who is better known as the author James Herriot of All Creatures Great & Small books, had his surgery. In his early days James Wight spent his time working from here going to farms in the Pennines.
Leyburn's Town Council Offices are housed in Thornborough Hall, a fine house which was used in the TV series as the Ministry of Agriculture, a building always visited by James and Tristan with feelings of apprehension and doom.
In one corner of the Market Place stands the former Town Hall which is now a hardware shop. Many of the buildings which front the Market Place date from the early years of last century, the Market Hall was not completed until 1856, the same year as the railway arrived from Northallerton and Bedale.
The town has two churches, one is the Anglican Church of St Matthew, built in 1836 and had a battlemented tower built in 1868, this church is situated just off the Market Place in St Matthew's Terrace. The other is the Catholic Church of St Peter & St Paul, on the road to Richmond. It has an imposing west gallery and fine stained glass in the east window.

I love these little market towns that are not full of Greggs Costa's etc a little bit of old England.

Although some of them I filmed have greggs and costa in their market places now too - which is frustrating

Hi Neil, nice little walk around Leyburn, but you missed the best bit which is a walk up to the Shawl, you get absolutely stunning views of Wensleydale from there.

Pity you couldn’t visit on a Friday when the Market stalls are present, adde to that the spectacle of the Livestock Auction Mart in full throng! But a very good take on a busy little Market town! Well worth a visit, and plenty of places to stay, and some very nice Restaurants!

Whilst the old cinema closed a few years ago, a group of dedicated volunteers have ensured Leyburn does still have a brilliant 'cinema' offering at Leyburn Arts & Community Centre on Richmond Road. Every Friday is film night. Occasional other nights feature films too plus live events.
This venue is also a member of National Theatre Live which means it broadcasts live events from West End theatres which are screened simultaneously around the country and sometimes worldwide. Sometimes the closure of a place creates an opportunity for something really good to come along and the Arts Centre certainly fulfils that brief 👍

We stayed over in Leyburn for a weekend a couple of years ago and I think I recommended you visit. So glad you did, we fell in love with the place and can't wait to go back in the summer. Its a great friendly place to walk, cycle, drink and eat and the views of the local countryside hills are stunning especially if you sit outside the Bolton Arms on a sunny day. Great video, thanks for sharing.
