A lot of people ask me about pruning determinate tomatoes. This video covers pruning, staking, feeding, calcium & Blossom End Rot (BER) and some other tips just for determinate type tomatoes. The principles are the same for ground and container tomatoes but containers tomatoes probably need an extra water soluble feeding or two. After you give them mid growth care.... let them go and grow!

You can't get a better growing tomatoes video than this , on point and concise . I saved my tomatoes from blossom end rot watering better and using artificial fertilizer as a quick solution thanks to your videos , now I will keep gypsum around from now on since the very beginning . Thanks man.

Looks like something I didn't know to do 3 weeks ago in Ohio but I did "the basket style popular tomatoes cage" I drive a 5/8" rebar stake to support my system but I could have only used the rebar stakes

Thanks Gary. I've never tried determinant tomatoes before but I think they made you well in my climate because indeterminate tomatoes seem to die quickly when we get our Heat

Gary I never knew that it’s such a difference between indeterminate and determinate. Now I have fertilized them pretty well and their stems are very sturdy , much thicker that I ever seen.
I did pruned them quite well, they are now about 2 feet tall and started to flower, should I fertilize them less now? It just with a lower number fertilizer?
Hi Gary. I have watched many of your helpful videos. Thank you for making and posting them! I started tomatoes from seed very late summer. Wasn't working for a couple of months. I live in Southern California and I think they will still produce for me.
I have them in 10-15 gallon grow pots in a very sunny location. Anyway, with my determinate tomato variety I have noticed the lower side shoots below the suckers have turn yellow and seem to be dying off so I have just removed them below the sucker. I have been using Tomato Tone fertilizer but nothing in liquid form. I also have a bag of bone meal I mixed a little in the potting soil. Am I doing something wrong? Please advise and thank you! Patty
Ive got two plants in a 15 gallon container a three ring trellis and one bamboo stack in the middle but watching how much give you have with the stake now gives me the info i needed. They already began producing fruit. I watered them with fish fertilizer and i spray them weekly with epsom salt. Ill use the gypsum i havnt done that but i have taken banana peel and egg shells and dug around the soil and put them in.
I think you have given them all they need. That is a good routine. Good luck!

Usually tagged when you buy them but you can look up name on internet and seed companies pop up. IT will say in their descript[ion.
Cool info. I don't amend the soil though with expensive products though otherwise I might as well just buy tomatoes already grown.
Some people have to but compost is great.

Do you use the same fert when you first plant? I just bought some 4-4-4....Close enough I guess....Thnx again
My soil was too rich in nitrogen so now growing very high with little flowers, I put some blaukorn so we will see how that goes
It is nice video. In this determinate type of tomato is it a need of removing of the first flower? What are the benefits and drawbacks of removing of first flower from the determinate type of tomato?
If you are growing in pots as I do Gary, should I not feed after the first time? I am feeding my toms with chicken manure pellets as they have done well on those for a few years now. I give them a scoopful about every 10 days in each pot and then water over the pellets. But I feed my toms right up till the end of the season usually.

Thanks, blight on all indeterminate last two years, air born, soil infested to so have moved to canvas container this year first time determinant toms. Hope it works, trying four different varieties but still Sungold in containers x 2. Hardening off but cant plant till June, potting up

It varies. Which plants? Tomatoes 2-3 feet. 3 is pretty standard.

Yes you should remove the flowers. If they aren't to a good size you end up with tiny plants.
Love your videos. You stated after following these feeding tips the determinate plant is set; further feedings not required. Is this true for container determinate?
So good question. I addressed that in the description and probably not. You could probably keep the water soluble feeds going 1 or 2 more times. It really depends on size of plant and pot.
good information. Please highlight me about the gypsum usage i.e., what stage and how much of quantity for a container.
Really mix it in the planting bed when you plant and that should be plenty for the year. Mid grow you can sprinkle some on top of the ground if you want. In 5 gallons a handful mixed well.

I never use fertilizer. I use horse manure and wood ash with epsom salts. Get about 90 tomatoes per plant.

Gary what are your thoughts on crop rotation? From your videos I see you have a beautiful garden and lots of tomato plants. Do you plant tomatoes in the same place every year? I am very tempted to do that because I can use the desk fencing as a natural support.
If you have the space it is great. If you are in close quarters like me... it wont do much. The problems just walk over to the new beds. As for soil exhaustion and fertilizing... compost restores that worry.

60-90 days but you can take cutting and replant.

Sir, how can we determine determinate from indeterminate tomato plant?... what’s the difference?... thanks for your nice videos.
Just by name or a label. If you look them up online youll see description that tells you. Indeterminates grow for the entire season till frost comes. Determinates get to set height produce and die back. They can recover but it is a long wait.
Hi Gary, love your videos. I have a determinate cherry tomato growing on a pot outside. It rained too much on the past 2 weeks, roots are appearing on the main stem, and the plant is shedding the lower branches, that have turned yellow. Is this because of too much water (maybe the plant thinks the lower part is on the soil?) or could it be a disease. It doesn't really look like blight, just like the plant is drying and shedding the whole branch from the base. It has growing fruit and all the top part looks good.
They can turn yellow and die off. Just let it go. Blight spreads upward fast so I think it is just yellowing for rain. Mine are yellowing from crazy heat we just had.

I'm growing a Dwarf Goliath that has a stem like a tree trunk! I was planning to stake it, but changed my mind. The stem is stronger than the stake.

I think it might just be a Bush Goliath but the tag says "Dwarf" on it as well. I'm planning on taking some pictures and might do a quick review of it for TH-cam. Really happy so far. hello Gary. my tomatoea plants are growing very good nice and healthy but I'm concerned that i did not add any garden lime ..do i add it now or wait till i see flowers on them or little tomatoes perhaps..same for my peppers and cucumbers...?
Calcium is not essential as its probably there. This is just precaution. Just sprinkle some now like I did and that is plenty.
Great video! I'm new to gardening ... do I need to change the soil of of container garden every year? I grew vegetables last year and wanted to grow the same vegetables this year in the same container.
Depends on what you used. Good to dump out and break up roots, add some fert and maybe a fresh bag of something. Just 1 bag of something new to many containers. You basically just freshen it up.
Would putting peatmoss ok? Last year I used potting soil.
What brand watering can are you using? I love how fast the water comes out of it compared to ours! Thank you!

What type of wood mulch do you use? All the ones I see are treated with stuff and have fake coloring.
I like plan shredded hardwood. It is great mulch and decays nicely for soil nutrients. Lots more surface area with shredding for bacteria and microbes to do their thing.
If your doing container gardening I like a bag or two of pet bedding from the pet store. It's weed and pest free. Try to avoid the ones with added fragrances, as organic or at least not chemicalized as possible.
That stuff retains water well and provides good cover. And no weeds hitching a ride. It's not cost effective to do a whole garden with though but good for container gardening in my opinion where water evaporates quickly from the planters.
Is there any reason for growing the fennel with the tomatoes?

I've only been able to find a 70% with 30% other add. of Neem oil concentrate in stores near me. Should I settle for this?
Well if the 70% is 100% cold pressed neem oil. If it is the hydrophobic extract of neem... NO. You want 100% cold pressed because it has the azadirachtin in it. Search the web for it. I also sell it www.therustedgarden.com

It can, it is mostly calcium as it is slaughter house animal bone.
Why do some recommended pruning the suckers below the first flower cluster? I always follow your way but have seen some of epic gardening and others saying they go the first cluster.
There are just a 1000 ways to do it. To be honest I prune less now. I bottom prune for air circulation and prune the body of the plant to keep it in shape. Since I started using h202 spray, I manage diseases well and pruning is less needed.

I guess I'm confused on what is "Hardwood Mulch". I see all the bags at the hardware store, is Cypress considered hardwood! Also doesn't it effect PH? Will it have an effect on Tomatoes and Peppers?
You can use cypress. My bags at my store are called Shredded Hardwood Mulch. It wont effect pH on top of your soil as a mulch.
Great video what we're both of those fertilizers again? Can I have the name please. It's hard to find a good organic fertilizer around where I live! We're I live I've actually had to plant my tomato plants bring them inside I just planted them for the third time and I no longer know which ones are determinate or indeterminate. But I'll find out in a couple months.
Fish Emulsion by Alaska. And an Espoma organic fertilizer. There are so many and organic fert hovering around a 5-5-5 is fine.
Gary Pilarchik thanks a ton man. last year all of my tomatoes were heirloom. a lot of them were riding around the same time determinant in determinant I had three days of a lot of rain and on the night of the third day it got cold. The next morning all of the tops of my tomatoes have been split a circle around the stem. they were fine to eat but I ended up throwing away around 50 lbs. I wanted to make a bunch of different salsas. this year I'm going with a lot stronger plants :)
gary, are roma tomatoes determinate and what is your opinion about steaking vs.cages for them?
They are determinates and you dont really need to stake them if you have the space to let them fall.

It is fine. You can't technically have too strong less you go way up there

Since you just fed the plant with some insoluable fertilizer, won't you be over-fertilizing by adding an additional water soluble fertilizer?

Gary I read that wood mulch takes nitrogen away from the plants but bark mulch adds nutrients to the plants. Is this true? Keep me posted.
Not on top of the soil as a mulch. If you were to mix it in the soil it would compete for nitrogen.

You don't have to but It also wouldn't hurt production.

What about egg shells,? I keep egg shells in the carton. When I use 18 eggs I bake the shells at a low oven temp. for salmonella prevention the crush egg shells with an old pot holder then sprinkle around base of plant when they are first planted.
They work but take years to breakdown for calcium. So if you do it every year... eventually its a nice steady supply

I'm starting tomato plants in cups. They have roots coming out of the holes in the bottom of the cups. Will it damage the plants if I trim off the roots at the base of the cup when transplanting them?
Nope. If they are coiling the bottom of the cup, it might be time to pot them up.

Hey Gary! Thanks for your video! Last year, my determinate tomato plant (bush variety) kept producing tomatoes. I harvested 1 round, and then I thought it was done so was about to throw it away, but new tomatoes started growing again in the picked spots after 1-2 weeks again. Is this normal?

Can someone help me please? Why is Gary recommending 5-5-5 when so many tomato specific ferts are way higher in all numbers? Also others tend to agree with high number especially at first for plant growth... (I tried asking him myself but he's a busy guy.)

You can use the higher, you just dont need it. High Nitrogen make really pretty big green leaves but that isnt always good for production. 5-5-5 is a nice low steady feeding. Cheaper too.

How about semi determinate tomatoes ?
I treat them like indeterminates but leave a bit more suckers on them. So I prune less.

how do I know if it is determinate or not? I have heriloom cherry and beefsteak going but the package didn't say if it was determinate or not. I bought a huge seed pack with a ton of seeds on amazon and the seeds all came in tiny bags with little information on the plants, it just stated what the seed was.
Look up the variety name on the internet. Seed companies will pop up.

I have had a lot of failures but I'm not letting that get me down! I am determined to be successful! I got my very first bloom on my tomato plant but it isn't tall, should I take the flower off to let it grow taller to grow up my trellis? Thank you for guiding me in the right direction on my plants! :)
Generally speaking (and I'm sure there's probably exceptions) heirloom and bush varieties are generally determinate, and hybrids are generally indeterminate.
I'm learning myself about growing tomatoes. It's much more complicated than I thought.
If it's an indeterminate tomato it won't hurt to let a single flower grow into a fruit. The plant will produce here or there until weather or time kills it off.
If it's a determinate variety, it's a more complicated answer I couldn't give confidently. I've had early flowering and poor fruiting and a dead plant that was done, in which case I'd think I probably should have picked off those flowers and waited for a big rush of blossoms. Not sure about that.
Kind of sucks to spend the time on a tomato plant that only produced one fruit and died off. That was my experience letting it run its course with a determinate. Still trying new things though until I find something that works and has a good fruit yield.
