I love Bella Renovare's videos. She did a rainbow dresser for her daughter and my great granddaughter wanted me to paint her dresser in "rainbow". You can't say I can't do that to a five year old who thinks you can do anything so I did. I'm sure that she will grow out of it but for now she has that rainbow dresser.

My painting process is tortuous! Most times I push through and get a relatively satisfying result. But what I put myself through! When I don’t get what I envisioned my inner voice is so cruel, “what makes you think you can do this kind of project, you don’t have the skills. Just give up.” And when I listen to the cruel voice I shy away from that kind of project or I don’t go in my studio for a while. Seeing and hearing your struggles-I don’t enjoy knowing your working past your pain-but it is an inspiration for those of us who go through the same. And watching your final results is proof persevering has its rewards, even if it’s not perfect! ❤

    • @AcornHillHomestead
      @AcornHillHomestead 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Remember most artists go through this so you are in good company. This voice is really saying take a step back,a break, breathe and come back later. When listening to this voice we are too deep in the weeds of a project where all perspective and sense of direction is lost. Come back with fresh eyes and perspective and then carry on. Its like cleansing the mental pallet. 😉 I learned this from my mom who was an artist who worked in oils on canvas for many many years.

To answer your question, for me, it's both torture and fun. I stress out, debate, and argue with myself. That two-way dialog is always there. But! When I learned to blend I binge-watched tons of videos too. Eventually I found my process by combining techniques from various artists. I’ve learned to accept that I’m a messy painter. LOL. I used to be so hard on myself about that because other artists look so clean when they do this technique. My hands will literally be dripping in paint. When I finally let go of that expectation that I was putting on myself, I was able to create my own style and blend in a way that worked for me. Having said all that, I really do admire the work of those tidy painters. I love that we each have our own, unique process. Thanks Debi, for showing vulnerability in learning and growing. You inspire me to keep creating.

I realize this is an older video but i just want to say, Debbie, your videos speak to me more than any other videos I watch. You are one of many, many talented people who share their knowledge, techniques & skills. All of these artists inspire me but your videos actually heal me. That sounds dramatic but its true. Your outlook on handling problems or perceived limitations has helped me better silence my inner critic who constantly tries to convince me I cannot do something. I am quick to concede to that voice that tells me I don't have skills or artistic abilities to create what I envision in my head. Your videos truly help me change my mindset & give me confidence. Thank you!

You did it! I was there how long ago when you agonized about learning blending. Look at you now! It’s gorgeous, and you’re passing on the tips! I love how you stuck it out to reach your vision, where so often you could’ve settled. I’m not a huge fan of moldings but my mouth literally fell open at your final piece. So many valuable lessons in this video. Thank you! My creative process is both challenging and fun. When I’m playing around it’s fun. I recently signed up for a year-long art institute course. I am learning how to draw and paint realistically for the first time in my life. It is really hard! I don’t mean a little hard I mean a lot hard. But I am so thrilled to be learning something so completely new. So when I’m playing around doing things I know how to do it’s fun and when I’m learning something new I wouldn’t say torture but it really stretches me!

I'm a painter, turned furniture artist. I cannot live with my paintings on the wall. Every time I glance at them, there are things that I want to change. No matter how finished the piece is, there is always something that seems wrong, or could be better. Instead of driving myself nuts, I don't put my art on display. Simple solution. I appreciate your need for perfection, and this piece shows how much you put into creating it. It is simply beautiful! Perfect? Perhaps not, but it stands on its own as a work of art. Kudos Debi on a job well done.

My husband was an artist and loved to tell a story about the artist Matisse. One day at the Louvre the guards caught a little man with a ladder and paints trying to get up to one of Matisse’s paintings, when they got the man stopped they ask him what he thought he was doing and he said I never like the way I did that, I need to fix that! It was Matisse himself. I guess when Art is finished is in the eye of the artist.

i absolutely love the end thoughts. i can be very detail-oriented, and i am a perfectionist in a bad way - very hard on myself, prone to quitting. however.. i recently came to understand, to realise, how powerful of a thing that is for me to have. it does hold me back, it is stressful to be in the space where I ask so much of myself and it is definitely more time-consuming than it's worth, and i curse my perfectionism in that emotion that is often a very real barrier. but that eye for detail & that "anxiousness" is simply a profound ingredient in moving through different phases of being an artist, not because the pain is right in some way but because before it was a hindrance, it was simply love & skill. if i find i've wrecked something, i could actually take a lot of pride in stepping back, in being critical & saying "it's not perfect" because that unwavering stubbornness doesn't have to only be a block, but has a kind of happy-go-lucky, fly-by-the-seat of my pants energy to keep me going. so i just keep going. i often find i've done too much detail, fussed too much, lost sight of the bigger picture (and screwing up is an ordinary thing, too, beautifully) but being hard on myself is holding myself to a high standard & being so focused combines to open up a story of keeping going when i know i've spent too long & i feel it's been a waste. so... i add more, and when it's wrecked, i do more. and more. and it feels like me, it feels right. and i can love the piece & move through it's making with a kind of trust! it's a funny thing. the self that Did Too Much is the one who saves the day 🥰 this was probably convoluted, or i repeated myself a lot, or just plain confusing, but it's hard to convey a proper personal lesson to satisfaction. 😂still, I hope it was interesting.

My process is a tortuous process too Debi, it’s perfectionism and I drive myself crazy. 🙃

The only thing I know about my process is that I need to keep going, I will spend however long it takes! Obviously there are times when it doesn’t work! But sometimes when I go back after awhile, I see a solution! It is always a journey, not a destination! Blessed and safe days!

This turned out absolutely stunning, it's beautiful. I too struggle with blending but will never stop trying to learn how to create that perfect blend.
You could always try another piece to achieve what's in your mind.
I love creating, it's my passion my obsession and my therapy and I am constantly learning and have to remember even if I don't like it, someone else will!
Thank you for sharing, I love watching your videos.

Great job following your vision!! I redid a chest recently (well, I turned it into a monster lol) and that was a little torturous. Had to add way more bulk than I originally planned on, and therefore more of my clay medium of choice ( was using model magic)
But it turned out how I envisioned it! And I'm super happy I went that extra mile
    God bless!!

I'm a guy but want to learn how to do this furniture painting so badly. It has almost become a sickness. I'm just now trying to learn how to blend two colors. My eyes got the better of me at a recent rummage sale and I hauled some cheap pieces of vintage furniture to my storage shed, but now I see they need a lot of repair. A rookie mistake. I will look pieces over thoroughly from now on before buying. I can still use them to practice blending I hope. I even painted for a living for a while, but never blended. It's challenging. Meanwhile, you are a sweet lady and a good instructor with bookuddles of talent. From Minnesota, be encouraged as you certainly encourage others.

Debi, this turned out absolutely stunning!!! I thoroughly enjoyed the video, both watching the process and hearing your thoughts as your went along. The creative process is complicated, pleasureful and yet sometimes torturous as you said. Whether you’re painting a canvas or furniture. Same process. Same thoughts. Same types of decisions. Constantly questioning yourself. But you keep fighting with your own vision, trusting that somehow it’s within you and will come out if you don’t give up. This was such an enjoyable and’s helpful video. Thanks for making it!!
