Tom Wishon the golf design guru, has said so many times that since COR & MOI were maxxed out then nearly all club changes are cosmetic. The change in Loft from 35 to 28 for a 7 iron is purely to help the macho hitter.
I've just been fitted for his 771 iron, a design that's been around for nearly a decade. It outperformed my 2023 Honma and 2022 Ping. And at £95 a club it's insane!
Keep up the great work Simon.

I have a split set of Titleist AP3's and T200's, I keep the AP3's in the bag and I change the top half of my bag when I want to try something new. So it keeps my expenses down to a minimum when I want to buy new clubs. It's been working well for me

I buy different clubs but not coz im hoping to find a unicorn, just coz its fun..try new stuff..some i will resell(mostly due to this channel during the pandemic),some i will keep but not play just because they are pretty or ill game when in a hot streak..ap2 714's are those clubs for me.."summer" clubs..decent distance when im hitting it but would never game them early or late in the season..same 7 iron can be 25 yrds shorter in april or october here in Canada for me..year round gamers:1 degree strong mizuno jpx 921hm pro..best of everything: forgivness, feel, sound, distance, value!

It's been a fact for at least a decade now, by all means buy a new set as a treat or to get yourself hyped to practice and play more. Just don't get believing "performance" will be better. Keep preaching.

Agree that Custom fitting can be difficult depending on the day. Have had two fittings at a large, well known fitter - one day the recommendation was for one inch longer, two degrees upright. Second fitting recommended 1/4 short, 1 degree flat. I am 5’8 inches tall. The difference in distance was 3 yards between the two fittings. Did not buy either one. Left frusrated.

i decided to go 1 degree weaker at 7 iron 31 degrees yet i'm hitting them further tham the sims with more accuracy than ever before so big thanks buddy as i am a normal golfer who probably would of chose a different brand if i had not watched your videos

  • @GlitchGadget72

This is good fundamental sense. I've kept up the belief that until I'm playing golf worthy of a proper new club fitting I shouldn't be getting one. It just seems like a way to make a game I enjoy into a thing that may ultimately frustrate me if I dive down the rabbit hole too soon. It's nice to see that in theory the second hand clubs I have wouldn't be working too far against me. Also a nice thought that there is good data that can be taken away from a fitting without the obligation to actually buy anything in the moment.
I do have one question though completely unrelated to what you were talking about in this video. What brand is that older red/white/blue leather golf bag behind you when you're sitting down on the chair?

As a player of 1998 Cleveland TA5 irons when I got them new, I just purchased some new Takomos for 2024. So this test at the end was good, but also a bit obvious for a player that can hit as consistently as this chap. Would have loved to see you try this with a mid-handicapper. I am a high handicap so I was looking for forgiveness. I just started playing 2 years ago after taking off 15 years for family reasons. If I could hit as consistently, I would have probably just gotten clubs regripped as when I do hit them correctly, they fly great.

Simon, I'm a new golfer from the USA. You really have me looking at the used market. Currently considering a set of irons from Callaway Steelhead XR's 5-PW, AW, and SW or a set of Ping G30 5-PW, UW. and LW. All senior flex, based on what I have seen in you vids, the either set of clubs would be a good choice. Should I worry much about A vs R flex? How about Ping's color coded lie system?

Mate your info is Priceless. Thanks for what you do. I'll not hold my breath on a reply but maybe you can steer me to a better used club choice?
I'm 50. started last year. 26HC but not because I cant hit the ball. I'm usually 3 or 5 off the Tee with a low hook or a high push slice and 3 putting. On the other hand, I can potentially hit driver 300+ with a Ping G SF Tec with Stiff shaft and my 7 iron 190, but I'm using 21yr old Mizuno MX23 with Reg Exar Graphite shafts. From what I can gather these are very close to Traditional Loft at 34*.
Last year I had Mizuno 919 hot metals with reg shafts and I was hitting them great with my 7 around 220yrd but I noticed the dispersion was pretty wild on the bad shots and wanted more control. I found a Mizuno 921 Tour 7 iron in the bargain bin, brand new for £20 so give it ago. Wow. Right away, the weight, the smaller size and when I hit it out the middle it was like stroking a puppies nose with a feather. So i went out to find a set and bought a used set with x-stiff shafts. As great as they were my distance dropped off and I realised quickly that I couldn't feel the head so was on the look out for a replacement. I figured the shaft was too stiff and too heavy.
Here is where it gets interesting. I had a Free fitting with American Golf. I went in with my Mizuno 921 Tour 7 Iron with x-stiff shaft. Back then I was 33hc. The kid laughed at me and called me a Maniac for buying them......until I hit them. 10 shots grouped by around 10 yards at 160. He remarked on the spin and couldn't understand why it was so high at over 7000! I remarked that it was likely because they were traditionally lofted (not sure he knew what I was talking about). anyway, we went thru a series of heads and shafts. He said I was very close to needing Stiff Shafts actually so that's what we used. we tried the Callaway Forged and the Titleist t1000 i think. the balls were flying off the face and going over 200 yrds again but the dispersion was also 100 yrds. Imagine a reverse Triangle on the screen where my 921 Tours was tight at the bottom and all other clubs were spread out further up the field. He was a bit stumped at this point so i asked if he wouldn't mind me hitting my 921 Tour again. By now I was warmed up but the results were pretty much the same except the distance had improved by 10-15yrds.
He shook his head and said he couldn't consciously sell me anything as my control and grouping using the 921 Tours was too good.
So, there it is. Game Improvement = Distance Minus Control.
So here's where you might be able to offer my next club choice. I really like the Mx23's I have but I have considerably slowed down my swing so much so that all my clubs seem to go the same distance unless I hit 100% each time. I'm feeling the strain now. I have a young mans mind but the body is failing a little. I want a more Forgiving club but with the same level of control I have with my MX23's.
    Greatly appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

      Hi Paul,
makes a lot of sense. As backspin although can hinder distance helps tighten dispersion. The only irons that have that more loft option and keep an element of forgiveness is Titleist. The Ap2 forged options would be a good starting place mate as there at 33 degrees. 👌

I play my i3s quite well, 140-pw and so on, not to brag, but I do like the clubs because I hit them pretty to very well.
This video just made my decision tougher whether or not to just buy a few i3 individuals or invest in a used Srixon set.

I tend to get fitted into graphite shafts.
I usually hold on to them for 4 years because I worry that resale value will fall away if the paint starts to wear.
I guess that wraps may be a solution but could they change the characteristics of the shaft?

This may be a controversial opinion but here’s what I did: I’ve only been playing 2 years, I bought a box store set& net and hit them everyday until every club was broken, got them replaced for free and wore them out also in the first 6 months.
Then I got a brand new taylormade set, stealth2+ woods, Ventus shafts, and I play with pro v1s(when the pond is out of reach😂) - I never blame the clubs- they didn’t swing themselves into the dirt 37” behind the ball?😢
Only regret is that the warranty convenience availability and customer service with taylormade is a joke-I should have bought everything used 😂

What I found out is that today the blurb and marketing for some pretty average but expensive clubs is just full of lies. You might try re-shafting those irons with something like KBS shafts. I just did the opposite with my irons. Pulled the KBS graphite 60s from the irons (too low of flight for me, got about 135 yds from the 8 like you, but had problems with them running out too far on the greens), installed Mitsubishi Vanquish 50 shafts and now have a softer, higher flight (these were designed with input from the LPGA and since I'm 75 these shafts are great for me). You can't bend your irons for loft unless they are forged, but you can change shafts and grips (quite a range in weight there which effects swing weight and feel).

She came out with a picture perfect swing, and with a lot of practice, now plays on a nearby 18 hole course with me. have improved my swing so that my handicap has remained about the same 'tho I moved up to the gold tees last year at age 75. Buy new clubs when you can afford them.
