Popeye Village Malta has grown from its days as a Film Set of the 1980 Musical Production 'Popeye' starring Robin Williams, into one of the major tourist attractions on the Maltese Islands filled with a number of colorful fun activities for all young and young at heart.

'Popeye Village Malta', the Film Set of the 1980 Musical Production “Popeye”, also known as 'Popeye Village' today is one of Malta's major tourist attractions. The film set was constructed in Anchor Bay during the last 7 months of 1979.
To construct this authentic wooden village, tree trunk logs were trailered overland from Holland, and wood shingles, used in the construction of the roof tops, were imported all the way from Canada. A 165 international construction crew consumed eight tons of nails and two thousand gallons of paint to finish off this massive Set.
No less than 20 wooden structures had to be built. Before construction could begin, an access road leading to the Set had to be constructed. Also, Anchor Bay needed a 200-250 foot Breakwater at its mouth, to protect the Set from high seas during the shooting months of the Film Production. Filming commenced on the 23rd of January, 1980.
Today the Popeye Village Malta film Set still exists and has been converted into a primary tourist attraction for all young at heart.
Once you walk into this captivating, almost 40 year old village, you will be greeted by Popeye the sailorman and his friends, who will be your hosts and entertain you all trough out your visit. The whole family can be part of a unique filming experience with the animation crew and giving you the opportunity to see yourself on the big screen.
There are boat rides, water trampolines, sun bathing decks, beach lido, silver smith demonstrations, food outlets and much more.
This Popeye Village movie location, also known as Sweethaven Village was built as the film set of the 1980 Musical Production ‘Popeye’ produced by Paramount Pictures and Walt Disney Productions.
Popeye Village film location is located in Anchor Bay, just two miles from Mellieha and was constructed in 1979. The village consists of nineteen wooden buildings. Filming for the musical production commenced on the 23rd of January, 1980 in Popeye Village Malta. Today, the film set has been converted into a tourist attraction and is open to the public as an open-air museum and a family entertainment complex all throughout the year.

Popeye is my favorite childhood movie, I still watch it every once in a while for nostalgia. I wish I could afford to check the Village out and visit Malta, I know it would be a fantastic experience.
Popeye was the first film I went to at the cinema, 40 years ago, I was mesmerised, right through the credits while Bluto swam off into the distance. I walked 3 miles into town with my dad, to see it, he bought me chips and we walked 3 miles home. Just found out that the set is still there! This is now my number 1 bucket list!

@@GimbalWalkTV I did manage to find the film, being sent from the US to my homeland, Denmark. I wonder why they haven't got it as part of the ticket sale, and when I visited it, they had no souvenirs to sell at all?
@@finncarlbomholtsrensen1188 That's interesting - the souvenir shop must have been put in much later in that case. There's lots of them now for sale (no copies of the movie though that I could see)
@@GimbalWalkTV I must sadly confess, that I was never actually inside the set! I just looked inside the Ticket Sale, with the counter, walking to there. I could have asked, but seeing nothing for sale inside, I didn't imagine that they sold much inside? Living in the Danish owned and - built Mellieha Park during our many vacations (8 times during a few years), we often drive past when coming from the Airport, and also sometimes walk past the set during our organized walks, from there. We normally also walk from the Park once a week to Mellieha Town, over the fields, and with a special permit from the landowners (!), up the steep hills from behind, and have a fine view also to Popeye Village, before entering the streets, and finding a local inn for a beer, before going back.

I saw the movie when I was a little kid. I just visited Malta 🇲🇹 last moth and saw this amazing place from the cliff that is next to it. It was during the sunset and the village looked even more beautiful as it is. Awesome video btw. 👍👏👏
My father had taken me to see Popeye the movie. He was a Navy man and had Popeye tattooed on his arm. The film was one of his all time favorites. I wish I could have taken him here before he passed.

i been there loads of times but it looks better now than ever!!
Have been to the village many times over the pass 25years and the place get better and better with more being added, have been beaten up by both popeye and bulto and had foam put in my hat then pushed on to my head and loved every minute of it

Went here in the mid 80's, blistering hot day ! There was also a building close by which housed a huge
model of the Titanic. It was used in the film " Raise the Titanic", which was filmed in Malta, using a
one million gallon water tank !

Great video thanks. My family and I visited 2 years ago and it was great then. There was a lot of painting being done back then. The jewel store is great and we bought some beautiful Maltese Filigree Jewellery and had a nice lunch In the restaurant So lovely. Thanks again.

It was designed and built by the same Danish Architect: Hans Munk Hansen who also designed and built the nearby "Mellieha Vacation Park", at the same time, and in fact Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall lived in the Mellieha Parks houses during the filming of Popeye! You may live in their houses also, if wanted? Mellieha Park was the largest Maltese workplace during the built and it is still being expanded.

Been here twice and enjoyed both times. They even made a little Popeye film with us as the cast and we got the DVD to take home. After the film was made they made the village Multi Coloured as in the original they were mostly grey.My wife had a handmade silver necklace made at the silversmith with her name on it and we watched him make it.

My self and my partner went there last week. It was about 25 min walk from our hotel. Amazing place definitely worth a visit. It felt like going back in time! Location is beautiful and the bay absolutely stunning 😁

We went here in 94. We were the only people and it was faded and in disrepair. It is good that they have done it up.

well when we visited this place it was nothing like it is now ,it looked run down through lack of visitors
we never saw shops and cinemas etc it must have been revamped at some time There was not all that information to read like now very surprised

The blue disk on the wall is a CED disk, it like a record for watching movies. The format failed because video and laser discs had already hit the market.

I saw it when I was 7 at the theater now I'm 46 can believe what kinda shape the village is in after 40+ years

The construction of the film set began in June 1979. The set was completed in seven months, and filming commenced on January 23, 1980 and wrapped later that year on June 19 👍🏻

I think you need to work on your accuracy a little bit you said this place was built in 1979 somehow they found Popeye here in 1978 I think you have that a little backwards
