This is the most underrated movie of the the 80's. Robin Williams was the personification of Popeye, and Shelley Duvall was the perfect Olive Oyl. I LOVED this movie as a 9 year old, and I appreciate it even more at 45. It was so well done.
Being a big Popeye fan my whole life, I’ve always loved this film. Inspired casting, an incredible soundtrack and a loving homage to the original Segar comic strip.
I'm surprised (and very pleased) that the original filming location and movie setup had been mostly preserved after all these years. I would've thought that the place would've been converted in to an actual livable town or hotel resort. That's really awesome!
Awesome vlog. I saw this in the theatre in 1980 when I was 12 years old and I loved it. I have it on DVD and on google play. I still have the soundtrack on vinyl in mint condition that I bought when it was in the theatre.

went to Malta early march this year and travelled everywhere you went, Mdina, Valletta, saw the temples. but never went to popeye village. we drove past it, but never explored it. my grandparents were also Maltese, so going to Malta earlier this year was such a treat. great vlog!
Robin Williams is my heart. I missed a chance to meet him when he came to Chapel Hill, NC to the sister comic book store to where I worked. This is one of my favorite movies ever! Thank you so much! Side note : this may be the inspiration for "Booty Bay" in world of Warcraft.

Hello just got back from Malta before the COVID-19 kicked off loved this place! 2nd visit, 1st visit was a few years after the film came out and so much had changed
Wow.. so cool! I remember vividly going to the movie when I was 6.. then when we first got HBO in the early 80's they played it all the time. Crazy thinking it's been there and a tourist attraction for 40 years now!

She actually was buried with it when she passed in 1999. She loved Robin Williams. Thanks again for taking me to sweet haven. I can still hear the music. Forgot that Harry Nilsson wrote the sound track.
When I heard about Shelley Duvall's passing yesterday I immediately went to listen to the Popeye Soundtrack. I had heard about the Popeye village and this was a great tour. Not sure I'll ever make it there, but it's nice to know it exists. Popeye may not have been the greatest movie, but it was entertaining and has stuck with me since I was a kid. We even have the Soundtrack on an LP.
Here I am, scrolling thru the comments on this vid, and I find one from this month, and I find out from it that Shelley has died. That's too bad. We had a natural disaster here in the Northeast Kingdom (NEK) of VT that "finished" the previous day (but left our surroundings destroyed), so I wasn't keeping up with non-local news. ;) Seems that all of us that were kids when this came out (and even born to late to see it when it was new) enjoyed or even loved it. I certainly have fond memories of it.
