Joe Igbokwe, LP, and Others Tackle Aisha Yesufu Over National Anthem 'Disrespect'

  • Reactions are still trailing what some would call the ‘inappropriate attitude’ of Aisha Yesufu after she failed to stand up while the National Anthem was sung at an event.
Aisha Yesufu has been known for her activism on the #BringBackOurGirls Movement, but it was a surprise for many Nigerians when she refused to Honour the anthem and opted to sit.
After being asked why she refused to stand, she said she doesn’t acknowlege the ‘Nigeria we hail thee’ as her National Anthem and would rather stick with ‘Arise O Compatriots’.

When Nigerians are dying of hunger and all the government could do is to change the national anthem. How does changing the national anthem reduce the price of gari and groundnut in the market? How does changing the national anthem addresses the salaries of workers who can no longer pay transport fair to work? This is a senseless distraction from the reality of Nigerians.

This woman, your studio guest, said the national flag stained with the bloods of maimed, wounded and killed EndSARS protesters is "disrespectful". What a dumb, insensitive and daft comment to make on a national TV. I can see that she is trying to impress and echo the sentiments of her Imo state governor and principal, Hope Uzodinma, the staunch supporter of Tinubu administration. The undeniable truth is that a change of National Anthem is the least of Nigeria's problems at the moment. It is a mere diversionary tactic by the overwhelmed, unperforming Tinubu government to deflect discussions and criticism against rising cost of living, devaluing Naira, insecurity, mass exodus of companies leaving Nigeria for other West African countries, etc. The problem is never about the lyrics or wordings of the Anthem but the failure of the citizens, especially public officials and the politicians, to reflect the noble words in their actions. My take in all this is that Tinubu changed the National Anthem to spite, embarrass and get back at OBJ for opposing his presidency and supporting Peter Obi. But one thing I assure him is that his newly readopted Anthem will not stand the test of time and a new president will swiftly revert to the more popular and acceptable "Arise, O Compatriots" that was composed by Nigerians to break with our colonial past and all the negativity that it embodied and represented. Let us embrace homegrown solutions and focus on more important ideas and ways of lifting our country out of the mess it is grappling with currently. AISHA IS RIGHT. The NASS members are incompetent, greedy and a self-serving bunch of "Oh Yes" and rubber-stamp legislators pandering to the whims and caprices of a vindictive Bola Ahmed Tinubu. OBJ has been vindicated for deciding to stick with Peter Obi who would have performed far better than Tinubu.

That was shamelessly overturned to adopt it! 200+ million Nigerians were not engaged. The rights of Nigerians are constantly eroded and replaced with subservience and ignorance! You people in the media also and abet it. The optics overall are not good for Nigeria because somebody who got the reins of power illegitimately 'loves' the old anthem. Hmmm... May the labour of our heroes past over Nigeria not be in vain. Amen.

My question is, changing National Anthem is the best thing to for Nigerians, corruption, kidnapping, killing, Insecurities everywhere, hungers. No Electricity, Evil are happening every day by day, You people have not done anything to stop all this, you're there changing National Anthem, Look at the price of rice, beans, corn, garri, oil, salt, fuel and others. Aisha I love you personally, infact I have a gift anytime I sees you, As for me if I should catch any of my children with this Anthem eh, There will be no food for them for three days. I have said my own ooooo. Because I hate what I don't like

No matter how bad any country in the world is, they will never disrespect their country's National anthem either new or old, If she tries this in the Western world, Na straight to prison. We can't have two leaders in the country. If you are unhappy, leave the country until your candidate becomes president. leave sentiment aside, Her act is very disrespectful to the country. We all don't have another country that we can call our own than this same Nigeria.

    1. The lead anchour said, "She should know better." From what we know, Aisha Yesufu is far more knowledgeable and patriotic than her.
    2. For the so-called guest, that 'Naira note' example was so stupid. We have no choice than to use new notes because they are the only ones made available, For national anthem, we own our tongues and can't be told how to use them.
    3. What the hell did the guest mean by 'A group of Nigerians wrote the national anthem'? How many people are supposed to write an anthem; the whole country?
Alas, what do you expect from TVC?
