      I have hair very similar to yours in length and also texture by your description. From Amazon, I bought “Sync Hair Guard & Ear Guard Headband” ($11.99 US dollars) that you wear under your swim cap. It’s not perfect, but it has helped a lot. *I don’t do flip turns* I also put my hair in a French braid like you did in the last experiment. Thanks for the video!

    I'm black with thick natural hair down to my mid back. Layering up is the best thing that has worked for me. After I put my hair in a back bun, I use a thin cotton headband to catch the water at the edges, followed by a thin silk bonnet (sometimes two bonnets), then a clear shower cap, and finally, the silicone cap. It sounds like a lot more that it actually is. But it works every time. My hair may be a little wet around the edges if I go for a longer swim, but the majority of my hair is completely dry.

    I came back to this video to share a successful attempt to keep my hair dry. I wanted to make sure that I do not get it wet when swimming in low temperatures outside. What worked best was to use a regular swim cap and a neoprene headband on top. It worked for crawling for about 30-40 minutes (haven't tried longer, as it is cold...). I do have long hair, so I made sure to keep it as compact as possible in a braid, the end of which I flipped from the back of my head up to the top. I did chose a right headband to make sure that it does not let any water go through around the ears and it overlaps with the swim cap, creating a good transition. Hope it works for others.
    P.S. It would not make much sense on a hot day or in the pool, as it might be too hot.

    When you are a black person, this is even more complicated. Our hair is fragile already and prone to breakage on a good day. Add chlorine 3x a week and it's a disaster especially because washing and drying said hair is not as easy as Heather has it here, it's a whole production. This is all assuming you even get a cap that fits your braids or dreadlocks (If you do, you have to put them in a top knot which as Heather said is NOT aero at all). Otherwise, you have to change hairstyles and go for certain ones (which may not be the most flattering). Yeah, I really need to know how to keep my hair dry when I swim.

      My sista I'm only a few months in swimming 3 x weekly. I purchased different Swimma caps they're made to target African American. Their base is more for people with dreadlocks, braids. I have thick relaxed hair that's longer than neck length but not quite to my shoulder blades. I don't have braids or dreads. I have tried so many combinations it would take all day. I can tell you low buns absolutely do not work for me. I tried to make a fairly high bun. The Swimma caps come in different sizes. I purchased the kids size first. It fit nicely. Then I ordered a larger size. I tend to keep adjusting my caps and goggles so I tore that one mid-swim. Swimma caps are shipped from Africa and
      On the pricier side. After I tore the larger one. I found something comparable on Amazon. It is a long hair swim cap Lahtak. I use it most now. I have a theory that for long hair it is better to have a cap with room at the top versus a super fitted cap because they shift no matter what. The larger cap just seems to work better. I also have a silicone headband by Sync. It says to wear under the cap. I worn it under the cap and over the cap. My problem is no matter what I do, I get different results. Therefore nite mostly I just wear the Lahtak consistently the back hairline is always damp. Sometimes maybe 1-2 inches above the hairline is damp to wet. The area diagonal over the ears is consistently pretty wet. Most of my hair remains dry. But like I said it's almost a different every day. I did some extra one day I put on a tighter swim cap, then a shower cap, then a fabric headband (like for when you exercise/run), then I topped with another swim cap. My hair was almost nearly dry... That just seemed like so much work. I never tried again. I was my hair when I get home, put in a dangling/moisturizing leave-in conditioner. Then I let it air dry for a few minutes. Then I do some 2 stand twists with a roller on the ends. Go to bed. It is so pretty, no heat, and can last after you do your final wash for the week.. Almost looks like spirals or just big waves depending on how big/small of sections you use. Also how tight you make the twists. It's the easiest, low maintenance hairstyle I've stumbled into. Good luck

    • @smw4900
      @smw4900 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yeah I also have a TYR (I think that's the name). It's a ponytail cap.. Its ok but I don't really wear it anymore. There are a few different caps on Amazon designed with long hair and/or black hair in mind. I also found a gentler method to remove chlorine but I'm still experimenting. Not sure if it's working instead of using clarifying shampoo that's super harsh

    So the method I’ve found is brushing conditioner through my dry hair before plaiting and putting under a cap. You still need to rinse the conditioner off, so not technically dry, but it blocks the chlorine and you don’t need to shampoo after. Good way of doing a deep condition.

      @@bizarrasp So when I thought of high quality I prefer tyr and speedo caps. I once forgot my own at home and quickly bought 3 very cheap ones with 2 layers that were uncomfortable. Perfect with better quality more expensive silicone caps. The last layer was latex because I used to go to triathlon competitions a lot and there was usually latex as a must that they gave and I used it for layer 3. Anyway, in pools, I like latex for layer 3 because it’s thinner but can almost better cover the existing two layers. For open water (especially colder water) the 3 layers of silicone are very good. I like to wear it by carefully inserting all the hairs under my cap and pulling them over my ears in "over ear" style.

    Seems to me if you wet and soak your hair first in fresh water (no chlorine) before putting your cap(s) on. It will be much less likely that chlorinated water will work it’s way inside the cap. The other thing to understand is the cap versus no cap will expose your hair to a lot less chlorine. So still a good thing to wear a cap even if your hair gets wet. And whose to say all that moisture in your hair after a 400 meter swim isn’t mostly perspiration?

    Ok. Conditioner on dirty ish hair but just on the last few inches of your hair which are more prone to being dryer and damaged so it doesn’t make hat slip off round hair line then do the tight bun thing quite high up but then use a hat that is really tightly fitting as I find any air pockets make hat want to creep up and let water in. That’s all I’ve got!

    I recently tried a swim cap for hairbrella… they are wonderful but my hair did not stay completely dry so I had to return them 😢 I have hilite hair and do not want Any chlorine getting in my hair.
    For me, just wetting my hair and then putting a cream type barrier keeps the chlorine out but of course hair still wet.

    It's not hard to french plait your own hair, Heather. Just needs practice. Think of it as good for your shoulder flexibility!. Anyway, I do the french plait, but I always wash my hair after swimming even if it is not very wet - want to get rid of the sticky chlorine-ness, and hair washing is a good way of making sure everything gets clean. I only very rarely wash my hair at home. But my question is really on the goggles. Racing swimmers seem to wear 2 hats with the goggle sandwiches in between. Why do they do that?

    • @heatherfell_oly
      @heatherfell_oly 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I need to practise then!
      Swimmers tend to sandwich their goggles to help secure them a little more.

    If worried about chlorine damaging hair, you can apply castor oil to your hair, cover it with a shower cap, then a normal swim cap (latex or silicon) on top. Even this is not 100%. After 2km, you getting screwed.

    Cute video... However still no successful long hair swim caps available. Honestly I don't understand why Speedo does not use the same rubber ribbed sealing which works great on their goggles and always keeps my eyes dry... around swim caps with adjustable straps for different head sizes ... Maybe one day they will actually care enough to do so... Until then lake water is definitely easier on your hair than pool water however even with pool water, hot oil conditioning three times a week with coconut oil really keeps your hair conditioned enough to withstand the chlorine... So never bothered with a swim cap before nor do I plan to do so in the future until they invent one that actually works 🤷

      @@aimeemartel8249 Considering that none of the methods worked and anyone who has been swimming for any extended period would tell you the same. Moreover, they included the sunbathing sequence at 1:39, further highlighting that after 400m of swimming, Heather indeed dried her hair in the sun.
      If the point of the video was to make the assessment of effective use of various caps to keep the hair dry, they could have just provided the facts by showing the results and methods.
      So that's all I got out of the video, which by itself provided no actual benefit in keeping a long-haired person's hair completely dry.
