They make PVC fittings at 45 degree and 22 1/2 degrees. Didn’t need to heat up and bend. Very nice design. I’m trying to design something similar for next winter. This is my first winter with my above ground pool and it sucks how much I have to maintain the water that builds up! I don’t even want to pump it out. I want to set up a tent and leave it alone all winter. I’ll come back and post if it goes well! Great video.
thank you, very helpful. my friend pays these inadequate pool guys to cover her pool, they do it in 15 minutes. BS. It took me an hr to do it 1 year but she didn't have ANY leaves when she opened it the next year, this is great.
Should have run the garden hose over it to simulate rain to see if it works as advertised. I’m using 2x4’s and harbor frieght clamps to hold the tarp tight on the frame. That with this plan will be like a perfect tent.
You can put some pillows in the middle also between the long PVC arms. It starts to sag in between the arms. I know it’s a little extra work but boil boy it’s not near as much is trying to get all that debris out of your pool and or your room and cover etc. I know I’ve had a pool!Great job looks good so far
We were just talking about doing something like this. Thanks for sharing how you did it. We were actually thinking about going taller and being able to swim longer in the fall?
I'm going for it. I hate dealing with the dam pool cover. I've tried everything. Looks good. In so cal we get rain, lots of wind and then hot sunshine in winter. I hope it works.
I ended up buying some spring clamps to keep it somewhat tight. please check out the failed video of the cover. I will be trying something new this year. Thanks for watching
This is a great idea. Thanks for sharing! I'm assuming the center vertical pole isn't just open-end sitting on the pool floor? I'd be concerned it would wear through the pool liner over the winter.
the first time I put a cap on the PVC so it would not have any sharp edges touching the liner. that did leave an endention in the liner about 1 inch deep. second year I made a cross at the bottom to distribute the weight that worked much better.
I know it's a pain pumping the dirty water off the pool cover in the spring but my two main concerns with this would be: there is no air pillow in the pool to absorb ice expansion and causing damage to the pool walls/liner, and wondering how it would hold up to heavy wet snow. Did you have any of these problems?
I honestly don't know. I bought it used and I didn't find and brands on the fittings. I have used different brands of pool pumps and filters over the years typically intex because of the price and availability.
The piece of pipe going into the pool, is that attached to anything or it just runs to the bottom of the pool/liner and the cross ones just sit on it? Do you know what angle those pipes were once bent?
not sure of the angle but it i started the bend 2' from the end of a 10' piece of pipe and bent it to make it 2' higher. it was a bit of trial and error but worked out great. using it again this year. thanks for watching and good luck on your project.
Way to complicating. I stuck two 4x4's in the ground 3 feet apart and opposite sides of the pool the same. Then attached an 1 1/4" elbow to all four. Lastly I took a 20' stick of schedule 80 grey pvc attached it to one elbow bent it into a tight arch marked and cut the other side. I did the same to the other stick and I put a support in the middle to hold them together sturdy. You could join more pvc perpendicular to the first two making a nice dome.
I hate to be break it to you bc this is so outrageous and so much effort and actually is cool as fuck but the reality of the matter is that water you don’t like pooling on your cover is actually a good thing. The water on top weighs the cover down to be pressed against the water in the pool and thus reducing the effect of high winds on the cover. Also you should always clear any debris off your cover before winter otherwise it breaks down and goes through the cover, yes it may say solid but it will go through it
That’s the problem. Water collects on top possibly with debris. More rain pushes the cover in. Once the cover dips below the water you start pumping out pool water. It’s ridiculous. He’s def on to something here, just needs to be perfected.
I was wondering if maybe wrapping fishing line around each tube and connecting to the next one all the way around? Would that work somewhat? I don't know how to space it out from the center outwards. Would the fishing line hold tension and support the cover? Or is this totally nuts?? Great video, thank you. I came here cause I'm too cheap to fork out the money for a store-bought one:)
Instead of fishing line you could try like 1/4'' thick rope or even like the contractors string line. Maybe drill holes in the pipe to feed the rope throw.
@@JUSTTRYITDIY ive had pools most of my life. Season end i shock it hard and close it up. I use a mesh winter cover then a leaf net cover. Once all the leaves are off the trees I remove the leaf net cover. The Mesh cover will leave the water on top of the pool drain into the pool. I always open up to a Crystal clear pool
@@Robert-oi7mlI still get stuff that drops into my pool over winter though. Then you try pumping off the water with a mesh cover and you end up pumping pool water out. Best is having the pool with no trees around.
it was a bunch of work for sure but worked pretty good until we got a bunch of snow. this next year i will be looking into building one with a mesh cover. thanks for watching

Genius! Good job bro!
Great work.
But a closeup of each elbow of the skeleton is more helpful than a video shot from a distance.

this next year i am going to try a mesh cover... fingers crossed
I have some old tailgate canopy frames I'm going to try similar to your idea
Thanks for the video
sounds great, good luck on your project
I had this idea but have it float on the water by using pool noodles covering the pvc
Could use milk jugs with 3/4 filled with water as weights to help keep it tight
I ended up buying some spring clamps to keep it somewhat tight. please check out the failed video of the cover. I will be trying something new this year. Thanks for watching
I use the black rubber caps on the end of the stand up pipe much gentler on the bottom
Great idea! I will have to try that.

It has a cap on it for sure
@@JUSTTRYITDIY you could also put a pool ladder pad/liner underneath as well- great vid!
@@sugetoosty1685 great idea
I think something like an umbrella holder in the middle would work.
I have changed it out for a cross with a cap to keep stability
Why not just buy 3 of the biggest balloon pool floats, wouldn't that keep the cover high enough? Just asking
It might, I had issues with rain pooling and not running off. The big issue was leaves and debris getting in the pool.
Very interesting. May have to try this.
I good luck it was great also check out the pool cover fail video...... this year I am switching the cover to a mesh cover
@@JUSTTRYITDIY why mesh?
I'm glad there is fast forward lkl
Drain water, put the ladder in center, use as center pole for cover, it will look like a dome.
my ladder connects to my deck, that may work if you have a free standing ladder
how you going to get in and out of the pool with no ladder?
You can't leave an above ground pool drained!
Looks good! Did this work?
worked pretty good until the snow storm destroyed the cover. check out the failed video and the mesh cover vids
I think it will sag between each frame and fill with water
didn't fill with water... lol watch the other follow up videos 🤣
I’m going to try the same design with aluminum bars.
Thank you
great idea.
How did you protect the liner from the pvc in the middle of the pool?
the first time I put a cap on the PVC so it would not have any sharp edges touching the liner. that did leave an endention in the liner about 1 inch deep. second year I made a cross at the bottom to distribute the weight that worked much better.
All you need is a gutter system to push water to one area 😊
Did it continue to work well? How did you attach the legs to the side of the pool?
works well as long as you don't get snow. the legs just lay on the sides
How many feet is the mild pole holding it
it turned out to be about 5' long
I know it's a pain pumping the dirty water off the pool cover in the spring but my two main concerns with this would be: there is no air pillow in the pool to absorb ice expansion and causing damage to the pool walls/liner, and wondering how it would hold up to heavy wet snow. Did you have any of these problems?
no problems with ice but did have an issue with snow on the cover got too heavy. check out my fail video.
Great idea I'm thinking about trying it after you built this did you have to go to a larger size pool cover?
no I used the one that was the size of the pool (18')
How do you connect the pvc to pool edge? Does it just sit there?
I did put an elbow at all the ends to kept it from sliding and so that the possible sharp edge of the pipe did not wear a hole in the tarp.
Did ya glue all parts or shoot small screws in pieces
Can u please make me one for a 15ft round, I will pay
what brand and model is your pool?
I honestly don't know. I bought it used and I didn't find and brands on the fittings. I have used different brands of pool pumps and filters over the years typically intex because of the price and availability.
I guess it doesn't freeze where you live? Need the pillows to prevent the ice from stretching the pool walls out.
it does freeze here for sure in the middle of Iowa

sorry the center post just sat on a cap but I changed it this year. check out my video I posted today and it explains the change
Hey, did you have to get a bigger pool cover
no, we have a 18' round pool and I got a 18' round cover.
Did it last the winter???
Yes, September 2019

If I am understanding you right you want to use the fishing line to support the cover between the PVC pipe?
@@JUSTTRYITDIY Yes. So it wouldn't sink in between :)
Not sure if the fishing line would be able to hold enough tension. It was difficult to get the water out just by pulling tension on the tarp.
Instead of fishing line you could try like 1/4'' thick rope or even like the contractors string line. Maybe drill holes in the pipe to feed the rope throw.
You could just hang jugs of water off the grommets on your cover to pull it tight, pillow for ice.
Oh man. I just finished my pvc cover over my 24 round pool. Wish I had seen thei earlier. Did it actually work out and hold the water from collecting?
the water .... yes for the most part but the SNOW, NO!. check out my other video of the "pover cover failed"

Just get one of those pumps you can leave on the cover that automatically kick on when there’s water. Problem solved
