I searched, “diy pool cover” thinking I’d find a video on using a tarp with duct tape, instead I find someone making a pool cover with the same technique of making Nike shoes in a factory. Well done bro, I clearly need to step up my game.
Buddy, flippit, the amount of skill and lekker tools that you have, is amazing. I will do something like this soon, I know I can, I just need to commit 😊
What’s the exact name of the thing drilled to the floor that you used to tension the straps? I’ve searched for “cord tensioner” but have had no luck finding something similar
We don't have a swimming pool, but I do wish more people would take the same initiative that you have. Evaporation is such a huge cause of water loss, and come Day Zero, that is your toilet flushing water if needs be. Well done, Hugo.
Well done Hugo, I don't know what a pool cover costs, or what you have invested in this one, but I'm sure that you have come up ahead on this one. Your cover is going to save you water, chemicals and cleaning whilst providing some extra safety - seems like a win to me.
Thanks for your reply. What is the size of your pool? I see you have 8 poles. I was told mine needs 11 poles. Im going to make this.. What spacing did you use between poles to prevent sagging? 😊
Wesleigh it was one of the best things I have ever bought/made. It is holding up great and working like a charm to keep out all plant material and keeping the water clear. Not to mention not needing to top up my pool. I have never bought one so I cannot say if it is better than a professionally made one. All I know is that is works very well.
The pipes were to long so I had to cut them shorter. I needed 8 poles but decided only to buy 6. I made up the two end poles from the off cuts by attachied them together with wood. As they would not bare a load over their distance it worked out fine.
Hi, where did u get pole ends?My pool is wider than 3m (width of pvc roll) so I have to join up 3 pieces. Did u have anythingSewn or did u get all joining done by heat welding?Last thing is where did u get the wood poles?
The pole ends I got at Builders Warehouse, but most hardware store should stock them. The wooden dowel I also got there, they sell them as curtain railing. It does not make a very strong bond, but it was the best way I could think of to splice the poles. I had the canvas made up of a 1.5m wide roll of pvc canvas at sa-canvas who heat welded three strips together and made the holes for the poles. Hope that helps! Let me know how yours came out.
That's great idea! How well does it stay down on the sides (the ones not strapped down) in other words, is it difficult to lift. Thinking child safety. Great video!
It's held down fairly well. I have seen people sell these as being child safe. Mine does not have to be. If the child can undo the ratchet then it won't be though.
I just measured the weight you have to lift to get it high enough for a child to crawl under and it is 10 kg. I'm not sure If Ill allow my child to play around it, but I'm not a father and am not sure where I'll allow a child to play.
sa-maker that is plenty besides there is always a way to secure the sides as well!! That thing will save so much water too. Thanks for checking that force though. That's cool of you. !
FYI PVC canvas only comes in 1,5m and 3m WIDTH so if u want wider then you have to heat weld / stitch pieces together . This adds to cost Would be interesting to know how they made the holes for Aluminium poles... Great DIY project but many small little steps to get it perfect and save cost
Hi Sa-Maker, did SA Canvas insert the drainage holes and the holes for the aluminium poles / end tubes? Looks like you did a great job and I'm keen to do the same. Does it hold your weight as a matter of interest?
Hi David, SA Canvas did the drainage and the holes and the pockets. I would not walk on the canvas as it will not hold my weight. It might do a child's weight but I'm not making any guarantees. Enjoy the build. This was the best R5000 I have ever spent.
What area are you in, im from Pretoria, also thinking of doing this, ans also where do Inget the pvc sheet? Did u have it stitched and welded at a tent shop?
What company in Cape Town can be used to do the stitching of the canvas? how can i still allow rain water to top up the pool when the cover is deployed? Thanks for this great video.
No. In Cape Town you are not allowed to fill your pool if you do not have a cover. This one has out lasted 3 times the bubble covers. Also because it does not allow sunlight through you do not have to use any chemicals in the months it is on and during winter I switch off the filter. The savings more than out weigh the cost.
Hi! Could you please tell me the measurement between pipes (distance between pipes)? I live in Brazil and I don't speak English, so I don't know if you spoke the measurements during the video. Thank you!

Thanks for this video. I have an irregular shaped pool and had no idea what to do. This gives me a start!😊
I ordered a DIY kit from - SA Pool Covers. They are quite well priced. They deliver nation wide. Installed it myself. Took me 20 mins. Easy peasy.
Marachenka hi, do you have a contact nr or email for them please?
Hi, how much was your cost shipped?
4:15 where you bought that from sir? can u name the product too
Genius engineering!
You're a genius... So many DIY talents for a single person 🙌🏾

Thanks. Good luck with the build
What’s the exact name of the thing drilled to the floor that you used to tension the straps? I’ve searched for “cord tensioner” but have had no luck finding something similar
Same doubt here
great idea, I think I notice that you drilled holes between the sheets so excess water runs into the pool when it rains, is that correct?
You are very talented.
Thanks :)
I got SA Pool Covers to send me a DIY kit. Worked like a bomb.
Do you have a link ?
How do I get them to send me one please I am in Johannesburg
Nice, how much was your total cost for this DIY?
Did the tarp/material lasted for you? Thx
Hi where did you find that cover, the blanket?
Brilliant vid man!! About to attempt the exact same thing so really appreciate this
Good luck, I hope it turns out great!
Thank you for this idea
Great video. How big is your pool Hugo?
Nice! That's a pretty ambitious project!
It was. It freaked me out a couple of times :)
Perfection 👍🏻 ambitious talented guy great job 👏🏻
Where did you buy tarp from
What are the preliminaries for making a pool cover
Perfect work friend!!!, congratulations, i love it :)
Thanks
Looks like it was quite the project. Look forward to seeing how it 'weathers the storms' in CT 😃
Me too, and Cape Town is looking forward to some storms itself. The drought is dragging on...

Good work , will build one for my pool . Will 30mm aluminium pole work? Can't get 38mm to purchase
It should, but it will depend on the wall thickness and their length.
Very Clever...Nice work!
Thanks
Wow! This is awesome
Can you please tell me which company you used to do the plastic wielding? Thank you
SA canvas
Great work looks awesome
Thanks
I remember I messaged about this so is it still working do you still use it
plz tell me where to buy the aluminum poles...i cant find them???
I used Conways Aluminium Profile Stockists. They are in Montague Gardens and delivered to my house.
This looks great! I like that I'm seeing your videos more often!
Thanks. I hope to bring you more of them more often
I love this I'm wondering if you're in the US? I am trying to find the poles to do this. What diameter Poles did you end up using?
Hi, I'm in South Africa. The poles are 38 mm diameter with a 2 mm wall thickness
Thanks for your reply. What is the size of your pool? I see you have 8 poles. I was told mine needs 11 poles. Im going to make this.. What spacing did you use between poles to prevent sagging? 😊
How much it will be cost
Have you stubbed your toes on the coach bolts
Does this allow any UV light into the water? Or is it just a cover to keep leaves etc out?
It keeps out all UV light
Hey, how is the cover holding up? was the price you paid worth it vs getting one professionally made?
Wesleigh it was one of the best things I have ever bought/made. It is holding up great and working like a charm to keep out all plant material and keeping the water clear. Not to mention not needing to top up my pool.
I have never bought one so I cannot say if it is better than a professionally made one. All I know is that is works very well.
PLEASE TELL WHY DID YOU CUT THE PIPES AND PUT WOOD IN BETWEEN; SURELY THE PIPES WERE LONG ENOUGH BEFORE BEING CUT?
The pipes were to long so I had to cut them shorter. I needed 8 poles but decided only to buy 6. I made up the two end poles from the off cuts by attachied them together with wood. As they would not bare a load over their distance it worked out fine.
Brilliant!

Is this good for the insurance? Will it hold a person
I don't know. That was not a requirement for me.
WELL HOW DO U TAKE THE COVER OFF AND ON
You undo the ratchet straps and roll up the cover
nice tipps. thanks
You are welcome

Thanks very much for the info, pity the ally poles are so expensive but I know the outcome will be topnotch. Will def post pic when done.
Excellent video! Do you by any chance still have a drawing of your cover?
Unfortunately not. i never had one actually. I went to the canvas company and they were making one for another client so based my canvas on theirs.
Plz answer on more question: what is the THICKNESS and the DIAMETER , LENGTH, and TYPE of aluminum you used..thx
38 mm outer diameter 1.8 wall thickness. I bought it at 6m lengths, the cheapest type of finish
That's great idea! How well does it stay down on the sides (the ones not strapped down) in other words, is it difficult to lift. Thinking child safety. Great video!

How to secure the material at the holes for the pipes?
The company that made the canvas for me hot welded a second layer of canvas where the pipes go through.
@@samaker4 Do you have any idea to do it yourself?
th-cam.com/video/yH-KIJRHcw8/w-d-xo.html Maybe this way is good?
Amazing!
Thanks
Hi, how much did it cost you to make this size cover? Where do you get the pvc canvas?
the pipes, canvas and labor to weld the canvas was R5000. I got the canvas at Khells in Cape Town and the welding was done at sa-canvas.
sa-maker thanks so much for this video - u put my mind at rest. Appreciate the assistance 🤗
@@MysticRose24 No Problem. Good luck!
@@samaker4 Fantastic job putting the pool cover together. Where did you source the aluminium tubing from; and what's the diameter of the?
@@tonycarelse3089 I think they where 35mm diameter. I got them from an extruded aluminum supplier.

Yes I had it welded together to make it wide enough. The holes has a square patch that was welded over the spot and the hole made through both layers.
@samaker4 where can I order the material pre heat welded like you did ? I'm in Southern California if that matters , thanks great vid

Thanks. Try SA Canvas, they did this one. There is a row of 10mm holes between each pole that allows the water through.
Too bad you not demonstrate how to close ajd open after finished yout work bro..
The first kid that jumps on that tarp is going to get a brick surprise.

I got this from an upholstery company that stock pvc canvas. called Kehls www.kehls.co.za
