I lived in Longyearbyen for 3 years, from I was 3 to I was 6 (1986 to 1989) stil remember stuff from there, polar bear on our playground in kindergarden next to the church, bear crashing a weeding (left the door open lol) and lots of awsome trips around the area, and I was only 3 years old when I moved up there, memory is a strange thing. But Svalbard stuck in my head, and I will go back to visit at some point, I have to to check out some of what I "remember" =) Love the videos, fun to see it all again =)

I was thinking that same thought today. Grim has that look of lots of love in his eyes and his disposition reflects it as well. My cat, Chocolate, has that same look. He is a very spoiled cat, very much loved and has that look in his eyes like Grim. Their spirited eyes can fill a heart with joy! Meanwhile, Cecilia, I love your vlog. I could never live there. I am living back in Chicago after many years away and three days of cold gray weather can unhinge me. Three months of night ....no way!! I am a tropical type of a person who loves the sun, sand, warmer oceans and will drop everything for a sunset, but I am intrigued by life in the Svalbard and have wanderlust in my heart! This is true, I've been doing it myself under lockdown and now have two sleeps in 24 hours and work and relax around that. Happy new year to one and all, looking forward to the next instalment.
Yes, exactly. I am in Chicago, and during the winter it gets dark at 3:30 pm. Often I will go to bed early, but wake up at 1am or 2 am. I will fold laundry, etc. for awhile, and then go back to bed for a few hours. I have done this in winter my entire life.

Cecilia, Thank you for bringing us the wonderful world you live in and I would like to say that your video / photo work is 1st class and reaching professional level, especially the landscape and mood shots. Over the last 6 years I would spend 6 months in Europe on a yacht and 6 months in my home country in Australia. I left Europe in October 2019 to spend summer in Australia and was to return March/April 2020 and was planning to visit Svalbard in July / August 2020. But the world change and my country has been in virtual full lockdown (can leave with a permit, but returning is challenging). Your vids enabled me to visit Svalbard in 2020. While you are a great presenter I do have to say whenever Grim is in the view he tends to steal the show. What a wonderful looking dog. All the best for 2021, Mick
I read somewhere that in the Northlands darker places, it's biologically natural to sleep for 4 hrs, awaken for awhile, and then go back to sleep. Those deep dark night awake hours are very magical. But, yes, it's difficult to live modern life in that manner, definitely.
I was wondering how the native peoples dealt with the sleep situation. I have a great great grandma (who I never even knew about) and so I wish I could have asked her so many questions. She was Inupiat ( close to Alaska.)
I find myself slipping into the evening sleep then up at midnight for 4 hours during winter in Scotland. You must be incredibly self motivated and resilient to live through the polar nights

I watched a documentary on Iceland the other day. The glaciers will be gone within 200 years. And Iceland may become uninhabitable due to the volcanic takeover. Climate change. And you are feeling it now. I've seen a climate difference where I live. When I was a kid, August was the hot month. Now it's July. And the Winter's aren't as Snowy as they used to be. Not a whole lot we can do about it. Even with reduced Carbon emission, climate change will still occur. We just won't be around to see the drastic side of it. And good luck with your cabin extension. I am waiting to watch your progress and see how you handle the running water issue. Happy New Year to you also.
I was just thinking how life in Svalbard propably has the biggest carbon footprint out of any places, of course the over all impact isn't that big since it's just couple of thousand people. Still I'd move there for some time and really appreciate the videos.
Oh and it's the same here in Finland, when I was a child we had snow always most of Decembre, now parts of the country wont get snow at all and where I live we just got snow few days ago.
Same in Alaska. A few villages have had to move farther inland because the permafrost was melting into the sea and several places have seen record low salmon runs because the rivers are too warm.

😍 We never really know anymore how much snow to expect this time of year. Our cabin is also located in a way that the winter storms often sweep all the snow into the ocean, our friend cabin 200m away has tooons of snow outside because it all gathers there. Right, the polar night is so magical with all it's stars and northern lights 🤩

I could watch you stroking Grim all day 😂 I was going to ask about the snow? I thought there would be a lot and you’d be digging your car out all of the time! Is there less snow than usual this year or was I wrong in expecting a lot? The mountains lit by the moon were simply beautiful, I thought the polar night would be so dull but with the stars, the moon and the northern lights I can see why you stay there. Stay safe and happy and give Grim a stroke from me x
😍 We never really know anymore how much snow to expect this time of year. Our cabin is also located in a way that the winter storms often sweep all the snow into the ocean, our friend cabin 200m away has tooons of snow outside because it all gathers there. Right, the polar night is so magical with all it's stars and northern lights 🤩
