Do you guys remember having to fill out a card to take books home from the school library? They had a card inside the back with a list of names that had previously signed the book out. I always thought it was cool to see who else had gotten the same book as I did.
@@kellymarsh3956 I'm a 1968 baby too! Loved the 70s and 80s, and feel fortunate to have grown up in those decades. But I also would have loved to have experienced the 50s/60s as well. ❤
This is random but her shirt at 00:56 is so cute and modern looking. It seems like it’s a picture from a tv set of people pretending that their in the ‘80s, you know? The guy’s style of dress and haircut doesn’t look very ‘80s to me either… Just the Ray-Ban sunglasses, which actually are timeless and have been popular since the 60s.
I've said for years that 1984 was the peak of the bell curve for humanity. It's all went downhill since. 2023 is the pit of hell of the bell curve. Class of '89 here.
1980’s will be forever remembered as the golden years. Everything was great, including the music. So sad that this new generation may never experience the same.
Unfortunately, Gen Zed will never experience the wonderful memories we had. They're too busy being indoctrinated into being SJW's without a cause. They're missing out of the best years of their lives. Its very sad.
@@waynemasters You really shouldn’t assume that’s all of gen z, everyone is different and more gen z than you think very much aren’t busy turning into sjw’s so don’t worry
Born in '76 here and yes, growing up in the '80's was the best. We had little to worry about, spent our summers outside running around until the street lights came on. No cell phones, no internet. It was wonderful!!!
@Chet Senior spoken like a person who didn’t have the privilege of growing up before this lazy, entitled, pick me generation. Or you grew up with us a lazy, entitled, pick me Gen Xer. Either way, tragic 🤷♀️
Yeah, I'll also agree with the idea that Gen-Xers/80s kids had it really good because we were the first generation to enjoy computers for work, school and entertainment, so we remember what life was like both before the computer age and the Internet and we know what it was like afterwards. We kinda had the best of both worlds ... a childhood free from Internet addiction where we spent most of our time outside playing in the real world but we also got to play video games and learn how to use computers and as we became adults we helped to build the Internet and our modern world. Becoming an adult in 1990 was just the perfect end to a childhood and a decade.
Born in 75 and absolutely loved being a kid in the 80s. So different from today. Also, being born in that time we first hand watched so many things becoming obsolete. We know what things were like before certain technological/social advances (R-1 residential zoning, schooling, childhood freedom, (absence of) social media, etc.) and what they have become after, thus making us a perfect generation to declare which era is better. An added bonus was we got to see the 70s lingering into the decade. I also think we are better representatives of what good music is.
It is an interesting time to be a part of because you can see two different generations above and below almost sort of duking it out verbally sometimes. The 70s and the 80s all seem to have their own style and culture. The 90s does too but after that it really seems to blend and not too much is unique to their own time other than technology. Ripped jeans and Air Jordans are all 80s! Thank you for watching and sharing your memories of the time!
@@RhettyforHistory love what you said about the trapper keepers -especially teachers giving students notes and permission slips and things to actually take to the parents. Imagine that -a time where parents were encouraged and welcomed to be a part of their kids school life instead of calling involved parents terrorists like they do now because parents want to be asked permission for certain things. 🤦🏼♀️
hey there batchmate, was born in '75 too somewhere here in Asia and things were really different back then in the 80s, one thing that I've really noticed kids were really adventurous that time compared to kids today who would just sit at home either glued on their Ipads or PCs not having that physical activities that we had during the 80s
Born in '74 and I remember the 80s so well and wish I could go back where everything was so simple and fun. And I remember everything that was in the video. I wish I kept everything I had.
05:54 Remember when rainbows were just innocent rainbows, and something little girls loved? It’s so sad that such a beautiful thing from nature has been twisted into representing pervy sexuality and ideology that’s pushed on everyone everywhere we turn.
@@anti-ethniccleansing465 yep, I remember wearing my rainbow suspenders like Mork’s from Mork and Mindy. Now, they’d likely be recognized as me supporting Pride Month instead of just being some cute and innocent rainbow suspenders.
@@MB-wx4gp Right? I remember those suspenders haha. Cute indeed. I had the popular light blue Trapper Keeper with the big rainbow on it that broke up into hearts. It really makes me angry when I think about this stuff. Ruining so much with innocent kids.
I graduated in 87 so I remember all of this. passing notes in class, those pens with the different colored ink where you just pushed a button for a different color ink to come out. Guess jeans, members only, big hair and neon clothes were also some of my favorites.
Ahhhh, the big hair. I felt like such a failure because my hair was flat as a pancake and would only point straight to the Earth's core. I'd get perms and my hair would be straight again in a few days. Even though straight hair became fashionable later on, I've never been able to stop thinking of my hair as substandard.
@@selah7702 We still have a shoebox full of my notes and my future wife's from high school from 1984 to 1986. We folded them into origami like shapes and slipped them to each other between classes. Most of them were to X rated to read to anyone but ourselves lol.
Graduating in 82’ you can’t forget the coolness of the multitude of concerts that came around and concert t-shirts worn the following day to show that you went. 😎✌️
Being poor, the best part for us was the end of the school year - that’s usually when we got free school supplies courtesy of dropouts, moving or abandoned lockers. No shame in my game because I was hooked up for next year to return equipped to learn - my current college GPA is 3.88 and I enjoy giving back to my community (likely to decline if I don’t stop lol) so thanks to all those students helping us get through school 🙏🏽
I never thought about the new clothes smell but you're absolutely right! The jeans, the sneakers, the backpacks, and also all the new trapper keepers and folders had their own smell too.
And the smell would last for a whole month too. The materials were better too. Things made from the 1960s into mid 1980s were made of better wood, metal and plastic so they outlast. I still have a jean jacket and pants set that was made in 1980s and they still look so new today. 😮 I sure miss the furniture too. We use to have entertainment system furniture which my brother would kick and punch when he got upset over a video game and that thing lasted for 21 years until my mom had to get rid of it due to remodeling the living room to use half of it for a personal bedroom. The beds were also reinforced with the best thick wood too and twin beds back then could hold up heavy weights. They don't make stuff that lasts long anymore or strong enough. That is the one thing I miss about the 1980s. Now things are so cheaply made that we are wasting and using up more resources than ever before. 🥺😔
Remember going shopping and bringing home all the loot...new clothes, new shoes, new backpack and supplies! My favorite part was picking out which outfit to wear on the first day!
As I’m watching this I could hear Huey Lewis and the news playing in my head. The 80’s were amazing I thank GOD for allowing me to experience that great era. Thanks for posting these awesome videos.I wish I could travel back to the 80’s and stay there. 😂
Born in 1970, and graduated in 1988. These were all spot on! Great time to be a kid, unless you got in trouble, and had to write, "I will not talk in class!" 100 times. 😂
Sticker books! We had sticker books and would buy all kinds of stickers, those puffy types in this video, shiny, rainbow, scratch and sniff, hello kitty, unicorn, big ones, small ones, and a ton of other exiting kinds. I was always in search of the most rare/unique ones to show off to my friends and make them envious. Trading them with friends too. Such FUN times.
YES!! I had mine! In CT, we had a store called Card Gallery ( cards, gifts, balloons, etc. ) They had a huge selection of Puffy and Scratch n Sniff stickers. We’d go there every week to get the newest releases!
Yeah ,born in 71, remember the 80s. Had a blast as a kid riding bikes playing outside till dark. Camping trips ,friends hanging out growing up. Such a simple era Man who else misses the good Ole days. Gone but never forgotten .
Just a couple of things that came to mind (graduated in 83') probably the most fun year ever in history, but anyway, I thought of running home to watch all the great TV that you could only find in the 80's. Remember back to school specials, General Hospital and the wedding of Luke and Laura, Little house on the Prairie, The Price is Right all the late night mini series and don't forget that was the year "Thriller" was released what more does a high school want!
I love this video! A couple of things you might've forgotten: book covers, either from paper bags or bought in the store. The paper bag ones you could write whatever you wanted on it. No one wanted to see the cover of the actual school book, doodling the "KISS" group sign every time class got boring and passing around random quizzes to your friends in and out of classes.
Yes! Our local electric company would donate book covers to our schools. They were white with the companies ad of course. By Christmas they were written all over. Lol. Good times.
In Sweden and Finland the book covers were self-made from sturdy wrapping paper and parents ( moms mostly, of course, ) were saddled with wrapping the books at the start of the school year. As a kid it was fun when you got to choose the print!
@@Fritha71 That’s cool. We made our own sometimes. Usually toward the end of the school year when the ones that were given to us started wearing out. I remember mom making them out of paper grocery sacks. Wrapping paper sounds way more cool.
I covered my books with white paper and then made the logos of all the bands I liked on them as if that was the subject and then sometimes recreate the album cover on the front too I was a little girl who listened to thrash metal and bands like that, so Metallica Kill ‘Em All was my Math book. Nuclear Assault was English Slayer was Science or Social Studies depending on what they made us learn. etc
As a child born in 1976, this video “jogged my memory” more than any other nostalgic thing from the 80’s (i.e., toys, movies, cartoons, New Wave Videos on MTV). R.I.P. to my 5th grade teacher Mr. Addington. He was an amazing teacher who not only made learning fun, but he was very passionate about his music. He had a piano in the classroom, which meant we had music five times a week at the beginning of the day. I will always remember this “One of a kind” man and he made my 1987-1988 school year very special. By the way, this video was well put together and enjoyable.
You know it..mine too!! Born late 69’ graduated 88’…best time of a kids life is teens to mid 20’s. I had so much fun, the music, the clothes ,the cars..IROC-Z
born in 1970 and was raised in the 80's ,the best times of my life . i wish we can go back to to those times .. Everything rocked back then, the clothes, music, tv shows, the big hair, food etc...
I am so happy I went to school during this era….was it perfect?? Absolutely not, but it was not dangerous, students did not disrespect teachers like the kids today do, it was a much simpler time. I miss these days.
i graduated in 89 and how i'd love to go back. there was nothing i loved more than 'back to school shopping'. it was definitely more fun in the middle school years. I LOVED 'stationary' stores and school supply sections of drug stores. we had all the essentials: trapper keeper, loose leaf paper, blue denim binder, notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers, ruler etc. and back to school clothes shopping meant sneakers, jeans, cords, flannel shirts and short sleeves. in high school my styles changed every year from a dork to a guido to prep with my Bd Baggies long sleeves, Rugger polos, J.Crew rugbys, ripped jeans and Reeboks. you'd have all your new stuff out on the bed so excited... BUT.....that first day bus ride was thee worst. summer was officially over. high school was different because you got cooler as you got older and by senior year you were the shit...if you drove your own car you were definitely the man. in middle school you were popular if you brought gum to school and shared but having your own wheels as a senior meant freedom. we had mtv, phones in our room, great music and tv, no computers ( aside from the rich kids with an Apple 2E), video games, a penchant for terrible beer and wine coolers, magazines and the library was our source for gathering information. wouldn't change a thing
So thankful this came up on my video feed. I was born in 74. I graduated 93 . Growing up in the 80's was fun. So many great memories of some school time things. There were times when I had to deal with some bullies. Thankfully I found an outlet to get involved with to help me through. Anyways I still have my Trapper Keeper! It has colorful butterflies on a black background. I remember the excitement of going to school on the first day waiting to get your schedule to find out your teachers and classes in Jr.High and High school. In elementary school first day of school was fun to see which friends got the same class with you.
I was borned in 1980 in another country, Honduras... But amazingly most of the things you mentioned I had or experienced during my childhood at school. Amazing times! How things changed so much? What has happened to society?
So fun to go on this nostalgia trip, thank you! Graduated in 1988, so had it all!Trapper keepers and the matching themed 3-ring folders! My best friend and I would trade our school supplies if they had something I liked better and visa versa.
I am blessed to have lived through this time!!! I absolutely love it! Thank you for all the great memories of my childhood!!! I miss the Jello pudding pops! The school cafeteria pizza!
There was nothing better than walking out the school doors on the last day before summer vacation knowing you had 2+ months of going to the beach and hanging with your friends. What a time!
I know right and I do too and I think about them a lot and it's been 30 years since I graduated high school I do remember those days but nothing like when I went to school in the early to late 80's I remember a lot of my middle to jr high days more than anything.
When it comes to the chalkboard, I rember in music class the teacher had the gadget that held 5 pieces of chalk to draw staves on the chalkboard. Not to mention at the end of the day one person was picked to fill a small bucket of water and use a big sponge to clean the chalkboard too! That was cool!
I got in trouble sometimes.... Usually my punishment was to write on the chalkboards (usually there was 3) ... I remember I had to stay after and write "I will not talk in class" a few hundred times... Anyhow, I tried to cheat at it by using that 5 chalk holder thing... I held it vertically and it would write every letter I wrote 5 times.... But I got caught, Ha Ha!... Five lines at a time were identical....
Omg lol I remember that man It’s so awesome to see we all kinda remember the same things Cool comment thought I would say it was a cool one lol if you was picked you felt good lol
Retro School Days greetings from coastal Mississippi. High School 1981-1984. The best era for schooling. I was in charge of the school store, so l remember alot of these things, even had some of them. No computers. Didn't get colour tv in the classroom until l was a Senior. 1984 Footloose. 2024 40 year anniversary 🎉😂❤
I always remember the smell of the cafeteria and remembering the bright green walls and standing in line forever waiting for our food and also the food trays !!!!
Being a kid In the 80’s was the absolute best. This is taking me back! I remember every single thing on this list and it really just brings a smile to my face.
One thing I think of was needing to cover the books we got issued at the start of the year. Fancy folks would have like plastic, while the rest of us would use the template printed on the paper bags at Safeway to make covers.
So strange to hear about a May to August summer break! All throughout my days we always got out in early June and started again the day after Labor Day! It always made for an uneasy stomach when you'd hear that Jerry Lewis Telethon music knowing it was officially the last day of vacation! Haha! My parents were once talking about a rumor of "all year around school" and that scared the heck out of me at the time but it never came true for us!
In the past this state started after Labor Day time frame but that was when many schools didn't have air conditioning. I was spoiled and I always had it. It is interesting to see when different schools start though. Even here in Oklahoma where I live. My parents said the same thing about school turning into an all year thing. I think that is just wishful thinking on the parents part. Those same rumors seem to be floating around still. Thank you for watching and sharing your memories!
I was born and raised in Los Angeles and we had June through September summer breaks. That was normal. Now I'm 45 and live in Phoenix and have kids with year round school they get out end of May and start end of July. I think it sucks for them.
Awesome video. I was born in the summer of 81, so the 80’s and 90’s were my childhood. Like many, I would love to be able to revisit that time period. The summer days seemed to last forever back then, and back to school time was a bummer, yet exciting at the same time. Thanks for the content and bringing me back for a little while, even if it’s just through some memories.
I was born in the summer of 1980 and I know exactly what you mean. The summer felt endless and the days were so long. I'd be out from morning until it got dark around 9pm. Great memories.
You hit it head on the nail with this video.Im 53yrs old and do remember the scratch n smell stickers for getting a good grade and also the nurse come in to the classroom to teach us hygiene and taking care of our teeth and do remember the small little white paper cups with liquid Florida and those red tablets that turn your teeth red.All the thing in this video I remember having as a kid in the 80's.Great memories. You forgot the GB pass we use to get when we needed to go to the bathroom in class. GB pass was written on a square colored cardboard paper that was laminated and it was a hallway pass.GB stood for Good Behavior.
I was a loner in high school 80-84. I had two best friends in school but never hung out after school. If I could go back I would definitely be more outgoing
I was born in 77 and this pretty much describes my childhood. I can still remember that distinct smell the school had when we we return from summer vacation. I moved to a nicer school in 5th grade where we had a computer lab. Once a week we went to the lab and played on the IBM computers. This such such a very different time. Thank you for the memories.
Very fun ! I just recall walking to school we didn’t get a bus and my parents worked so I wasn’t getting a ride. I also remember the members only or silk jackets. Best times ever ! Thanks Rhetty 😊
Those members only jackets were certainly a big part of the 80s. Same thing with those silk or satin jackets that seemed to have sports teams or businesses on them. Thank you for watching and helping us to remember more from the decade!
Why not cycle to school? Much faster! I have fond memories of doing that voluntarily during fall and spring just like many other students, even though we were provided a bus ride. It was actually much faster and thus one could sleep later in the mornings, lol.
Graduated 1988. So I remember quite a bit about school in this decade. It was a time of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Ozzy t-shirts. being a Metal-Head meant being accused daily of being a devil-worshipper. The fashions were reflections from our favorite music artists. School was a Michael Jackson, Madonna, Run-DMC, and ZZ Top video all rolled into one. My best memory was how hot the girls were. The high-heels, short skirts, tight jeans, leathers, big hair. Came to a point where, almost everyday, I was close to jacking it right in class. No wonder I didn't pay much attention to anything else in class.
I was a homeschool kid born in 2000....but boy do the 80s make school look like a lot of fun! I bet kids actually learnt things too in contrast to today's education system. I would have loved to have been an 80s kid. Also I want that Knight Rider lunchbox!
Lucky you :) I was born in 1999 so we basically the same age lol my father is collector and he used to collect retro lunch boxes and he's got the knight rider one and I used to take it to school with me for lunch
I did foster care, and kids do learn in school. It depends on the parents if they push the kids, and if they are actively involved. I work with a young lady at Walmart who is 15, a senior in public high school, and Harvard bound. She's wanting to be a biochemical engineer, or some such. I guarantee her parents are actively involved in her education.
I feel lucky. Born in 81, I have fond memories of both the 80s and 90s. I feel like that was a perfect year to be born, perfect decades to be the age I was. I remember the Xmas morning I opened my Nintendo. My ten year older sister hooking it up on tv for me. I remember the toys that came in McDonald happy meals. Real toys. I still have some like those Mario brothers figures. I have the whole set. Love these times and miss them sooo sooo much. My children won’t even understand what they are missing. But I try hard to share certain things. Like spending time with my littlest one on Saturday morning to watch old cartoons. He will hopefully remember this for the rest of his life. Not the same, but still.
This brought back many memories. I was born in 79 and had a lot of the items, or experienced many of the things here. I even still have the red 50 states pencil box that was shown in the video. Great work.
I was also born in 1979. It’s like each decade was a clear chapter in my life, turning 10 in 1989 and 20 in 1999. It was a tease being only 20 for New Years 1999 but that didn’t stop me from drinking!
I was Born in 78 and remember EVERYTHING about my 80's childhood. Best time to be a kid hands down. The 80's was a combination of tradition, advancement, and growing pains (the show too). We learned from doing not from social media. We played with toys that encouraged our imagination and gave us inspiration to be creative. Music was wide open and people still played the instruments to make that music. Computers were limited which made us appreciate every little upgrade and gave us patience and wisdom in figuring things out. I love my childhood and I unfortunately feel sorry for all generations after X. They will never know the absolute joy of anticipation of Return of the Jedi, Willow, The Karate Kid, Star Trek TNG and so much more. God bless the 80's kids.
I always loved going to the school library. I liked the card catalog and being able to work without my pets at home interfering. I liked the smell of the books in the library too.
KISSING POTION FLAVORED ROLL-ON LIP GLOSS!!! I was such an addict of that stuff. SO good and it came in little glass bottles. What a great blast to the past, thank you!
Even though I graduated in 1984, I do remember a lot of these things. I was never very fond of going to school but even so when I graduated I went directly to the university. Now I have been totally out of school for 32 years. I still have panic dreams about college and maybe not being prepared for an exam or not doing the homework.
I graduated high school in 1991, and still wake up panicking that I didn't graduate. It's rare, but it happens. I barely passed one class I really struggled with.
One of the fun things about the first day of school was looking inside the the textbook that was loaned to me for the year. (We were always instructed to write our names inside the front covers. I enjoyed looking at the name of the student who used the book before me. Sometimes I would recognize an older classmate’s name in the front of the book.) Of course, we covered our “new” textbooks with brown paper bags, and decorated them. It was a yearly ritual. I can remember the teachers saying, “Don’t write in your textbook!”
Yep! It was so fun to say, 'Hey, I know that kid!' or 'Cool, I got my cousin's book!' And every August, Mom asking for paper grocery bags instead of the plastic ones, just for my textbooks!
I've never seen paper bag book covers! Ours were always provided for free because local businesses printed advertising on them. Never thought about it, but no kids cover books anymore. Haven't in decades. I guess they just buy new books more often.
A great video! I graduated back in 1985. Fun times those were! I'm glad we didn't have social media and iphones back then! The cartoons back in the 1980's were so cool. Unlike the newer cartoons they have on today!
I was born in 1975 so it was the best time to be a kid in school in the 1980s. I remember the smell of the papers from the mimeograph machine. The papers would always be a little damp but smelled awesome! That’s a vivid memory for me.
Uh, oh! I knew this would happen some day. I used to make fun of people who said this… but, now I’m saying it: “This brings back so many memories!” In truth, this is a very accurate retelling of the times. One of the fondest memories I have is my mom taking me to get school supplies. I was pretty much able to pick out whatever I wanted with no problem. But as to the school clothes shopping, it wasn’t as much fun and I had to get mom-approved selections.
Thanks for the 80's memories. I was born in 1978 and grew up during this time. I always had to have a new' Trapper Keeper every year. I had most of those school supplies.
Born in 68 went to school back in the 70"s were a awsome time and I graduated in the mid 80"s,school was a great time and you had to learn it had great classes and the teachers did not take any crap back in those days. I was in elementary school in the 80s. I remember so many of these. I miss those days a lot in spite of the bad memories. However, it was great overall. I felt like I just went back in time. The 80s were truly the best! I wonder if life can ever be that great again? Life was more simple without the net and social media. I loved the cute erasers. My brothers and I used those as toys rather than erasers. Thanks soooo much for this sweet video.
Brilliant! I'm a '75 model too and fondly remember my childhood. I had the Hulk lunchbox and the horse trapper keeper and I loved scratch and sniff stickers and pens. Amazing time to be young. Today is more like a prison for kids, I think.
Hey Rhett, this was great. My wife and I were raising our 3 children during the 80s. Those school items were every childs dream. I remember our oldest daughter loved her high hair with all that hair spray. Good times. Thanks my friend.
Tall and wide hair was certainly a big trend! Since the mullets seem to be back I keep waiting for that trend to come back. So far I haven't see one girl doing it though. Thank you for watching my friend!
For me it was the 70's, but the main things didn't change much. We had different things on our lunch boxes (Star Wars, Bugs Bunny, Scooby Doo and Happy Days mostly, if memory serves). Maybe slightly different fashion brands. But overall, the same thoughts feelings and experiences. Can still smell that banana that was left in a lunch box over the weekend 😂 Thanks again for the memories, Rhetty.
I was a little of the 70s and a little of the 80s so I definitely remember some of the older lunch pails. A lot of those shows in syndication like Andy Griffith were still doing well with lunchboxes. Evil Knievel was a big one along with Star Trek, Little House on The Prairie and Wonder Woman just to name a few. Thank you for watching and sharing your memories. I know exactly what you mean on the banana!
We had vending machines in elementary school, for a quarter you could get a composition notebook or a popper pencil. In high school we had a book store. You could buy school supplies, candy and sodas. We had the denim blue three ring binder. I love the folders you could color in with markers, they had cool designs. We used to sell NowAndLaters or homemade cinnamon toothpicks to our classmates. I had a Road Runner lunch box in elementary school. I still love wax paper. It reminds me of good memories. I loved getting new textbooks and the whole class would learn how to fold book covers to.put on your books. You would be issued a locker every year. I was in band and would get out of class early for pep rallies. We had band trips too. Lots of great memories.
Do you guys remember having to fill out a card to take books home from the school library? They had a card inside the back with a list of names that had previously signed the book out. I always thought it was cool to see who else had gotten the same book as I did.
i always liked to look at the year when the book was checked out . so many great memories from the 80"s!!!!

Very little to worry about except the threat of being nuked by the Russians
Yes and no lazy kids!!!
Born in 75 and I miss those days....we had so much fun!
@Chet Senior spoken like a person who didn’t have the privilege of growing up before this lazy, entitled, pick me generation. Or you grew up with us a lazy, entitled, pick me Gen Xer. Either way, tragic 🤷♀️
WONDERFULLL 🥹🥹🥹🥹😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Yeah, I'll also agree with the idea that Gen-Xers/80s kids had it really good because we were the first generation to enjoy computers for work, school and entertainment, so we remember what life was like both before the computer age and the Internet and we know what it was like afterwards. We kinda had the best of both worlds ... a childhood free from Internet addiction where we spent most of our time outside playing in the real world but we also got to play video games and learn how to use computers and as we became adults we helped to build the Internet and our modern world. Becoming an adult in 1990 was just the perfect end to a childhood and a decade.
We sure did. We are the best generation.
probably those who became 25 and older in the 90's are all X'ers. I know it cuts off at 1976, so they were only 23 in the 90's, but close enough.
I'm old enough to remember the world before Star Wars. People just give me a stunned look when I tell them.
@@Jay-ql4gp They're people waaaaaaaaaaay older than you. They will be alright.

Cheers !! The best thing from the 90s was the Golden Age of hip hop and countless hours playing 94` hockey on the SNES with my high school buddies.
I was born in 69 went to high school in the 80's , a whole different world back then
@@RhettyforHistory love what you said about the trapper keepers -especially teachers giving students notes and permission slips and things to actually take to the parents.

I graduated in 87 so I remember all of this. passing notes in class, those pens with the different colored ink where you just pushed a button for a different color ink to come out. Guess jeans, members only, big hair and neon clothes were also some of my favorites.
Those pens were thick, not so easy to write with. There was always a lot to read on whatever desk you sat in as well.
those multicolored pens still exist I just saw a display of them at Dollar General
Passing notes! Wish I still l had my big box of notes!

We still have a shoebox full of my notes and my future wife's from high school from 1984 to 1986. We folded them into origami like shapes and slipped them to each other between classes. Most of them were to X rated to read to anyone but ourselves lol.

I never thought about the new clothes smell but you're absolutely right! The jeans, the sneakers, the backpacks, and also all the new trapper keepers and folders had their own smell too.
Everything smelled like new clothes, new shoes, new erasers, and freshly printed paper!
Plus the smell of the freshly waxed floors!
Anyone remember the smell of manilla paper?
Remember going shopping and bringing home all the loot...new clothes, new shoes, new backpack and supplies! My favorite part was picking out which outfit to wear on the first day!

Man who else misses the good Ole days. Gone but never forgotten .
I loved school shopping for clothes and supplies. Deciding what to wear on the first day was a huge decision and so much fun
@@Fritha71
That’s cool. We made our own sometimes. Usually toward the end of the school year when the ones that were given to us started wearing out. I remember mom making them out of paper grocery sacks. Wrapping paper sounds way more cool.
And you wrote the names of your favorite bands on the classroom desks.
I covered my books with white paper and then made the logos of all the bands I liked on them as if that was the subject and then sometimes recreate the album cover on the front too
I was a little girl who listened to thrash metal and bands like that, so
Metallica Kill ‘Em All was my Math book.
Nuclear Assault was English
Slayer was Science or Social Studies depending on what they made us learn.
He had a piano in the classroom, which meant we had music five times a week at the beginning of the day. i graduated in 89 and how i'd love to go back. there was nothing i loved more than 'back to school shopping'. it was definitely more fun in the middle school years.

I think that's the school year in the South so they can avoid the hotter time of the year.
In the past this state started after Labor Day time frame but that was when many schools didn't have air conditioning. I was spoiled and I always had it. It is interesting to see when different schools start though. Even here in Oklahoma where I live. My parents said the same thing about school turning into an all year thing. Omg lol when things were simple. Let's not forget the afternoon school specials .
Born in 76 I had and still have a Knight Rider lunchbox. Yes what a cool time period for being a kid in school.
It was a blast! We cried at graduation!
I was a child in school in the 80s. They were the best times.
This brought back many memories. I was born in 79 and had a lot of the items, or experienced many of the things here. I even still have the red 50 states pencil box that was shown in the video. Great work.
Those boxes like that were super popular. Thank you for watching and sharing what you have!
I miss the old style libraries, both school and public. They aren't what they used to be.
I had all those items almost, and everything is true, the scents, the clothes, shoes. Those are great memories.. 💯
Puffy Stickers, I completely forgot about those. That threw me back for a moment.
Thank you for watching wagfinpis!
KISSING POTION FLAVORED ROLL-ON LIP GLOSS!!! I was such an addict of that stuff. SO good and it came in little glass bottles. What a great blast to the past, thank you!
Thank you for watching and sharing your memories!
They still make Kissing Potion lip gloss, if you're interested to get some. :)
@@jwb52z9 Oh goodness, thank you so much for telling me...I am DEFINITELY interested!! Yay!👍
Even though I graduated in 1984, I do remember a lot of these things. I was never very fond of going to school but even so when I graduated I went directly to the university. Now I have been totally out of school for 32 years. I still have panic dreams about college and maybe not being prepared for an exam or not doing the homework.
I'm 72 and I still have that dream!
I graduated high school in 1991, and still wake up panicking that I didn't graduate. It's rare, but it happens. I barely passed one class I really struggled with.
Class of '84 as well. Our student parking lot would look like a classic muscle car dealer today.
I also was not found of school and I feel thankful each day I no longer go to school.
Yep! It was so fun to say, 'Hey, I know that kid!' or 'Cool, I got my cousin's book!'
And every August, Mom asking for paper grocery bags instead of the plastic ones, just for my textbooks!
I've never seen paper bag book covers! Ours were always provided for free because local businesses printed advertising on them.
Never thought about it, but no kids cover books anymore. Haven't in decades. I guess they just buy new books more often.
I remember that! One year I got a book with my older brothers name in it. (No wonder it looked brand new, probably never opened)😂😂
Yes!!! I remember wrapping our high school textbooks in brown paper bags. And we were not allow to write inside of them.
A great video! I graduated back in 1985. Fun times those were! I'm glad we didn't have social media and iphones back then! The cartoons back in the 1980's were so cool. Unlike the newer cartoons they have on today!
Born in 73 and so grateful for it. Growing up in the 80’s was the BEST!!! Wish I could go back….
I was born in 1975 so it was the best time to be a kid in school in the 1980s. I remember the smell of the papers from the mimeograph machine. The papers would always be a little damp but smelled awesome! That’s a vivid memory for me.
Thank you for watching and sharing your memories Valerie!
Loved that smell!!
Uh, oh! I knew this would happen some day. I used to make fun of people who said this… but, now I’m saying it: “This brings back so many memories!”
In truth, this is a very accurate retelling of the times.
I started teaching at the young age of 22 in the year 1982. I remember the school supplies.
Born in 68 went to school back in the 70"s were a awsome time and I graduated in the mid 80"s,school was a great time and you had to learn it had great classes and the teachers did not take any crap back in those days. I had really long hair like every guy did cause it was popular and you had tons of homework and class work. this generation rhat was born in the early 2000"s and beyond don"T know what it was like to learn and have fun,but school was fun sometimes, but the students of today are literally gone.so hope all enjoy this when we all were in those times.
I miss the 80's...what an amazing decade!
I went to elementary school with a Trinh Nguyen during the 80s. The school was Burnett elementary. Sorry to hear you had bad memories.
God this brought back so many awesome memories
Thank you for watching!
🎉80s,the best years are never forgotten ❤❤❤
Thank you for watching Elizabeth!
Yes, and summer break was from June until September! This June til August is ridiculous.
It is most definitely shorter now. Thank you for watching crazy8skml!
Brilliant! I'm a '75 model too and fondly remember my childhood. I had the Hulk lunchbox and the horse trapper keeper and I loved scratch and sniff stickers and pens. Amazing time to be young. Today is more like a prison for kids, I think.
Thank you for watching and sharing your memories!
I work in child care. It is worse than a prison. It's indoctrination.
My parents hated the smell of hairspray. Looking back, I can see why. The stuff stunk to high heaven, and when you douse your hair in it...
@@lorainefleeman6011 And that was dangerous because it was flammable. Had to be careful with 🔥
For me it was the 70's, but the main things didn't change much.
Hahaha the old banana yes and the way it used to make your sandwich smell of it 🤣.
@@RhettyforHistory Sheesh, how could I forget Evil Knievel?!?!
Partridge family with David Cassidy’s face always positioned looking at me while eating lunch out of my metal lunchbox! Lol. He was a dream!!!
@@ericteneyck8691 Crazy as F… that guy but I loved him!
The 70's&80's were the best great time to be a kid
