    Hey guys! Madeleine Harvey here, and thank you so much for joining me today! In today’s video we’re going to talk about how you can get the most from using vocal projection. So if you like today’s video, give it a thumbs up or click the subscribe button below…I would love to see you here everyday!! Let’s be friends!
    Projection…. what is it? We’re going to get into that in a moment. But first, let’s talk about what it is NOT. Most people will simply say that projection is making your voice loud so that everyone can hear. But Projection is so much more than volume. So try not to think of Projection and volume as being one and the same.
    Projection has movement. It’s extending your voice into the mask. When vibrations collect in the front of your skull- or your mask, you will pick up a ton of volume. It will be focused and fluid at the same time. The biggest issue that many people have with projection is lack of access to the mask. So when people are increasing their volume, there is a big tendency to emphasize the throat while attempting projection. When this happens, vibrations get stuck inside the throat, and the sound itself gets shouty and shrill.
    The best way to get off the throat and propel your sound more towards your mask is to play with a crazy baby sound. This whacky sound will shift your resonance by unlocking the tone off the throat. The key thing to remember here my friends is that having this access is much better than having a great sound right now. So if you feel a mental block coming on, like “I don’t want to sound like this when I sing.” Never fear, you won’t sound like this when you sing. We are simply using this crazy sound to afford us access to build a frame of reference. Once you have that entry point, you can then fill in more warmth by bringing the sound down into a more balanced place that is representative of you.
    The best time to practice this skill of projection is every time you open your mouth to speak. Most of our vocal habits aren’t from singing; they are habits that carry over into singing from speaking. So use any opportunity where you are using your voice to create new behaviors. I recommend reading aloud for a couple of minutes a day. This is a great time to play without being critical of your sound while still maintaining your awareness into the mask. Get silly! The sillier the better! Be fluid while jumping around in pitch. This is how songs are guys! They are flexible and powerful at any given moment. The more you practice landing your sound into the mask, the more you will notice an increase in range, flexibility as well as projection.
    There you have it guys! How to use vocal projection! If you liked this video, and would like to learn more, I have a complete lesson available on my website called Ready, Aim. Sing! Vocal power and projection. Simply click the link below to download the complete lesson.
    And don’t forget to subscribe to my channel for other helpful singing and performance tips. I would love to see you here all the time! Thanks for joining me today! I’ll see you next time!

      Ariana Danii I believe it’s because that’s how you’re adjusted.. but it can be changed .. I’m like this, I started to sing in headvoice/falsetto like everyday for a while and then it began a common thing for me to do (switch into hv/flsto prematurely) I think the best way to help is try to (not physically or you will hurt yourself) push through your instinct to do that .. try to develop some form of chest/mix.. but I’m not professional yet...! It’s just a thought.. it won’t be over night 💗

    First of all I wanted to tell you that I am a huge fan of your channel and totally love that you are giving us these free lessons :)
    I have been singing for over 4 years just for fun all the time I was bored and I am scared that I might've ruined my voice due to singing during my voting break. Also my voice feels kind of limited as it's very hard to sing any higher notes. I can't hear if I hit the right chords so I also wanted to ask if you have any advice on that?
    thank you very much and sorry for taking your time :)

    • @MadeleineHarveyVoice
      @MadeleineHarveyVoice  8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      +Simon Spampinato Thanks for your feedback Simon! Your voice is an amazing instrument, and can respond to the slightest relaxed coordination to find balance again. If you feel that your voice is stiff, or limited, try spending some time doing some slight movement around the neck like gentle neck rolls. This will disengage any muscles around your larynx that may have some habitual tensions. Here is a video on singing really high that I'm including... Not specifically so you can sing really high, but this exercise is great at moving the voice in a relaxed way, while building more flexibility on your cords. I hope this helps!! Happy Singing! th-cam.com/video/9lRRF6lJtJE/w-d-xo.html

    I also use the craziness of imitating animals and sounds and people when teaching. You present this as fun too!! Then there's the practicing every day OUTSIDE the studio during your everyday activities I think is essential. That's how I learned...inventing ways to use exercises while walking down the street or talking to people in a funny way.
    Thank you for amplifying on these concepts.

    Mask work is great but proper breath support is a key factor that is also a big part of projection so that your throat doesn't tighten. It is all well and good to use the mask for projection but if attention is not paid to having a low, well supported breath flow the voice quality may be strong but not pleasant to listen to.

      I don't fully understand this, but this is where my problem lies. No issues with 4:45, that's what I always do when I sing quietly. I just can't project that sound though... 🥲 + breath support is an issue for me!

    Thanks for the video! I'll try to start doing this practice 😀 I'm not sure if I'm gonna do it right though. Hoping I will for my choir group. I prefer singing with my real voice as an Alto but since we lack Sopranos, I sing with them. My main problem is that my high notes come out loud and clear whereas my low notes come out barely a whisper when singing in Falsetto. Falsetto is my go-to when singing from G4 up. Everything below that is sung with my real voice so when a song moves from like C4 to G4, well, my voice changes as well. I have to start being consistent 😪 and I've been told to work on projection so here I am! I'll return when I improve. Lol.

My problem is that I tend to sing very softly and as soon as I start to project, my voice goes of key and then I end up sounding really really bad😭😭.......What can I do ?? , What can I do to be able to project my voice and still sound as great as I would be if I wasn't projecting😭😭😭

    I like when you mentioned we should practise singing by learning to talk differently. There is probably so much that I do wrong in singing because I don't know how to talk that way, like opening my face, projection, dropping my jaw and possibly modify some vowels and keep the tongue behaving (stuck at the bottom teeth but sometimes the sides of the tongue touching the top back teeth) But I believe when teachers talk about SLS, they mean something fundamental, but maybe leaving out these other techniques.

    I personally can't always believe that I'm that confident enough that I can do it myself and I keep getting so anxious and getting my anxiety panic attacks and I get scared of how I completely shut down by not talking and other ppl don't know what's going on and I get really upset about it how can I get out of my head

    why do i feel like my reckless crazy baby voice hurt my throat a lil...how to direct it more forward to the mask from there? #doingitwrong

    • @MadeleineHarveyVoice
      @MadeleineHarveyVoice  8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      +Mimi Fly OH NO! Not pain! If that sound is hurting your throat, it's because your larynx is raising up a little. So stop using it for now. A good work around is to make a sad face, (Seriously) and whimper. This gets your tone moving forward and your breath supportive without too much fussiness from the larynx. Practice the whimper with short, medium volume sounds. And then increase the volume and the time that your holding out your whimper. This will activate that baby frame of reference and be easier to recreate when you go to sing. I hope this helps! Looking forward to chatting again!
