That is illegal, both civilly and criminally, and those matters are in court every day. It is abuse, because the woman is left devastated and ashamed, as if she did something immoral, brought it on herself, and is diminished. Protect yourself. Don’t let them touch you until marriage.
Exes block your blessings. They didn’t marry you, but you’re letting them prevent someone else from doing so. Believe me, they’ll drop you like a hot potato when they meet someone. They’ll be married with a family and you’ll be alone with a trail of destruction you created because of them. Regarding the event, it sounds like having him as your date was not a priority. Assuming it was a ticketed event, you only invited him after others declined and you still had a ticket available.

I am married now, but in the past when a man would get mad or jealous of me talking to other man I would simply say that I consider myself single and just dating unless the person expresses otherwise. I would date untill I met someone whom wanted more, and that's exactly what men do, so why can't women? That's why it's called dating, to see if they are a good fit or not, why limit yourself to one person. When you have options you can make a better decision than being focused on one man. This is exactly what I was thinking. The LW seems a little suspicious to me because she never explained why she’s still talking to her exes, it made me think she’s willing to go back if they asked. Starts with stopping you from communicating with the ex then starts controlling other relationships and areas of your life.
Not wanting you to talk to exes is not controlling, It’s reasonable. Other people like family and friends are red flag but not wanting you talking to exes is not. It’s super immature to still want a connection with exes while with someone else.
This is exactly what I was thinking. The LW seems a little suspicious to me because she never explained why she’s still talking to her exes, it made me think she’s willing to go back if they asked. BUT the current man is suspicious as well because he’s just telling her to stop instead of asking WHY she’s talking to them and trying to understand who she is and whether he can be in a relationship with a woman like her. Some people just have large networks of family and friends. Maybe some exes are family friends and they were only together 3 months but have years and years of being family friends. It’s like he doesn’t care about learning who she is and her motivations and her approach to relationships with friends/ family, he just wants her to obey and “respect” him. Yikes.
So…. Us men have to for them to commit. But they don’t have to wait for us to commit? Yeah right. Gotcha!!!

Well, he had a stroke in his 50s and could no longer work or manage his responsibilities. He didn’t own a home or any assets.
I am concerned about his anger issues. I'd be skeptical about this because of the possibility of it spiraling into domestic abuse. Also, he needs a steady job.
