When Peter Jackson noticed the face in the background, he realized the symbolism that just fell into his lap and told them to rearrange the shot so Thorin’s profile would line up with the statue of Thror. I love the friendship that grew between Balin and Bilbo. Temperament wise it seemed like they had the most in common. I could see Balin both on the battle field and on the bench outside Bag End with a pipe lol

I loved this scene because of Balin and Thorin. Balin is not blinded by the past if anything he respects and fears it. Whereas Thorin is so desperate to reclaim the times of old when the Dwarves were respected that he was losing himself to the madness of the treasure. Balin could not sit by and allow that to happen especially since he believed so deeply in Thorin that it hurt him to see Thorin acting so selfishly especially to one he personally called a friend especially since Balin grew to see Bilbo as more than just a means to an end.
I'm not that deep into the lore, but isn't their dynamic switched when it comes to Moria? If I remember correctly, Thorin looked into the mines and saw the Balrog (or atleast he saw some form of evil), so he was against reclaiming the mountain. Balin tried it anyways, with the known outcome.

an interesting thing to add is that all dwarves are greedy to their core because of what the rings of power did to them as a race. so he's hit with the double whammy of that and his genetic predisposition to horde gold and territory
Thorin and Balin would be Bilbo's closest friends. Balin would even visit Bilbo in Bag End with Gandalf after the events if The Hobbit and tell of his plan to retake Moria.

how about instead of that we congratulate the people who made the movies that there are so many amazing scenes not from the source material. it’s like some scenes from game of thrones that were never in the books but still some of the best scenes ever. no one ever wants to give the show runners credit :(
In the books, it is clearly stated that Balin took special preference and care of Bilbo as their journey progressed, so in a way, this scene did that fact justice. The director just took the opportunity to express it more.

People are mad at Peter Jackson for the incredible amount of creative direction he took with the story going off very arcane stuff in the source material as a reference and then straight making shit up form there, but the truth is, if he hadn't done that The Hobbit trilogy would have been another boring attempt like all the others. The original Hobbit story doesn't translate well to a movie, despite multiple attempts, because it lacked things that Peter Jackson added. It has NO clear villain. They literally just keep jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire (one of the chapters is even named that), but there is no distinct singular enemy. The orcs that attack at the end in force don't exactly count, because up until then, they were only attacked by trolls, environmental threats, random orcs who didn't know who they were, etc. etc. The story is a a fun little adventure novel, but as far as movie structure goes, it is basically just a series of misfortunes, followed by Tolkien making it sound like he is about to describe an amazing battle, and then Bilbo, our freaking narrator, gets knocked out early and has no idea wtf happened. The Hobbit may be beloved, but narratively it is one of the worst of his stories and almost impossible to make into a good movie. Peter Jackson took a lot of stuff that was in the arcane lore, expanded on it greatly, actually showed us what the battle of the five armies could have been like if Tolkien had bothered to write it instead of a lazy fucking cop out, and I love him for it. Tolkien wrote a good story, but he wasn't a god. He made plenty of mistakes as he was more concerned with linguistics than anything, and we should be able to enjoy alternate interpretations of a universe of a long dead author, who just wanted a reason to make up fake languages.

That looks he gives thorin when being accused of being afraid. Like “yes I’m afraid! We just sent a halfling to sneak past a dragon and we’re only 13 dwarves! Are you not afraid!?”
Not just the fact he’s afraid of the dragon, he’s afraid of what it could possibly unleash on the town right next door! He’s saw how it laid waste to erebor, but the city of dale…Would you not be worried that if you wake this dragon up, that it’s not going to to take it’s anger out on others? Cause I sure wouldn’t wanna be responsible for pissin it off and sending it to destroy a town full of innocent people

Even Thorin is a bit of an ass in this scene if you actually pay attention to his words when he says Burglar he kinda chokes the words out. Almost like he had to force himself to say it it makes it seem like deep down Thorin in there but his greed and pride blinded him
This scene really shows that Balin is trying to express to Thorin that his heart is not in the right place and that "Burglar" was not just some burglar, but a close friend of theirs.
I think it’s because of Bilbo. He always matches wits with Thorin and is never afraid to stand up to him. Even when Thorin has gone mad and dangerous toward the end, Bilbo tells him off without any hesitation. He inspires the other dwarves in this way; in that same scene, he gives them the courage to defy Thorin.
Balin the only dwarf to go with Bilbo right to the end of the tunnel in the book before wishing him luck and then encouraging everyone to make sure he is okay when he takes a bit too long.
the _slight_ hesitation before he says "burgler" is such a nice touch. like it probably shows his own guilt in treating Bilbo like that but at the same time it makes it all the more _his choice_ to prioritise the Arkenstone over the life of a friend as he pushes through that hesitation.
Balin truly is one of the bravest & wisest of the 13 Dwarves of Thorin's Company. And clearly despite the respect & love he might still have for Thorin as his king & longtime friend, he's still not afraid to clearly openly and directly express great concerns for Thorin of his not acting himself at all more and more since they arrived there.

Peter Jackson decided to cast a younger actor to play him because he had to appeal to the audience, and having an old grandpa play this character would be less epic. Even though it's not accurate to the book, I think Richard Armitage was amazing as Thorin and I wouldn't have it any other way
The way Thorin’s voice breaks when he says “give him more time” and his pause before he says “….burglar” - that guy is gaga over Bilbo but won’t admit it. Also I love that Balin admits he’s afraid. Refreshing to see male characters be willingly vulnerable and honest like that, rather than try to pretend to be all macho strong and confident and indomitable. Tolkien’s work is full of characters like these and it’s glorious.
Okay so... The Ring drove his grandfather mad, one of the seven given to the dwarf lords that could not corrupt them but drove them insane with greed. This is why the whole "Dragon Sickness" doesn't make sense. The Ring of Thrór was lost when Thráin was captured and taken to Dol Gurdur. Seriously, was "Thorin is a stubborn asshole" not enough of an established character arch?
It's tied to the hoard of gold itself by that point. Theory is that when a dragon sits on a hoard of gold that long, alot of the dark greed seeps into the gold itself and can affect anyone who comes near it. There's also a theory that because Thror wore the dwarf ring so long (since before both Thrain and Thorin were born) that some of that susceptibility to the dragon sickness seeped into his bloodline. So in short, it created a perfect storm for Thorin (in addition to his innate stubbornness :P)

The more time you spend with these Dwarves of the House of Durin and later learn that Gimli is not only their kinsman but also of course Gloin's son you realize...why Gimli was chosen perhaps by Eru or Manwe to represent his people.
In Defense of Thorin: He was already afflicted by the „Dragon sickness“. Yes, this is a thing. Through Dragon sickness you become greedy, selfish and distrusting towards friends and even your own family. You can get Dragon sickness in two ways: Get into contact with treasure that was part of a Dragon‘s Hoard for a very long time. Or, you obtain immense riches by yourself. If not for his Friends and Family, Thorin indeed would’ve become as mad as his Grandfather was.
Lord of the Rings: You knew they were afraid because they were allowed to express Fear. The Hobbit: "Yes I'm afraid. But not of the apocalyptic force that knows of us and is now awake. I fear for you getting what that apocalyptic force has. Because, I mean, we're going to win. We're basically cartoon characters. The only thing we have to fear is that mcguffin we made up because a creature with the power equivalent of a literal nuclear bomb isn't enough."

Dwalin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Dori, Nori, Gloin. They stayed in Erebor and were still alive in LOTR.

The writing and pacing was the problem. You gotta admit the actors are all phenomenal.
Lord of the Rings: You knew they were afraid because they were allowed to express Fear.
The Hobbit: "Yes I'm afraid. But not of the apocalyptic force that knows of us and is now awake. I fear for you getting what that apocalyptic force has. Because, I mean, we're going to win. We're basically cartoon characters. The only thing we have to fear is that mcguffin we made up because a creature with the power equivalent of a literal nuclear bomb isn't enough."
