Radiohead is one of those bands that a lot of people don't like immediately. But the more you listen to them the more you understand their vibe. Then one day you realize it fills a musical hole in your soul you didn't realize you had.
Yeah, but I almost wish she had reacted to the album or a live performance rather than the official video, so music and lyrics would have been more prominent than the weird guy drowning in a helmet visual ;)
@@briancarr4607 There is a reason that "Radiohead's seminal album OK Computer has become one of 25 recordings to be preserved by the US Library of Congress."
Yes he's really underwater, apparently he kept freaking out during filming and kept bringing his head out early, hence in the video he can't help but smile when he brings his head out, he was so happy to finally do it.
He was really underwater, but they filmed it at double speed and then slowed it down so it was actually only half that time. Though Thom has said he has hydrophobia due to nearly drowning as a child so while he wasn't underwater for that long, it's still fucking scary. Imagine filming a music video while encountering your worst fear. Like doing it while trapped in a room with real spiders. You should definitely dive deeper into the Radiohead rabbit hole, I think you'll love them. Daydreaming, How To Disappear Completely, Paranoid Android, Burn The Witch, Reckoner, Creep, Street Spirit, Exit Music for a Film, Fake Plastic Trees, High & Dry, Weird Fishes, Let Down, so many great songs.
pretty sure he was the one who came up with the idea for the video, oddly enough.. there's a video of all their attempts to film it and he freaked out quite a lot of times, which is probably why he smiled towards the end when they finally got the take they wanted.
The BTS of the video was difficult to watch. Even though Thom had full control of what was going on (I believe he was able to operate the release valve himself), so he was not in danger of drowning, he still struggled to get through it. They had to do multiple takes because he would panic and release the valve too early.
You seriously need more Radiohead. They are phenomenal. I’m sure a lot of us would love to hear your take and see your reactions to this beautiful band.
"A job that slowly kills you, Bruises that won't heal" gets me every time. It's about our everyday struggle and how we trudge on. This band is such a unique experience. A true chameleon by changing sounds and styles as they grow. Check out Fake Plastic Trees, There There, Paranoid Android and Weird Fishes/Arpeggi.
The Bends, Ok Computer, Kid A, In Rainbows, and Hail to the Thief are all in my top 10 GOAT albums. This band makes great albums, not just great songs.
I choose to believe that he's demonstrating how someone feels like they're being drowned by accepted and expected in society. That gasp for air is very real on many levels. Genius video.
"A handshake of carbon monoxide" making a deal with poison that is also asphyxiating much like drowning "no alarms" never wake up "and no surprises" can't be surprises if you're not around "silent, silent" the calm silence of death "my final bellyache" they say dying of carbon monoxide gives some terrible abdominal spasms "Such a pretty house and such a pretty garden" oops maybe there is something to stay around for and then the chorus adds "(get me out of here)" where here is the closed garage with the car running, and that's synced with the water draining Absolute art.
Take some context from the record. OK computer speaks to dissolution from society and feeling alien to your life and environment. My interpretation being that this song is about being overwhelmed and wishing for everything to go away so you can find peace. But you're not broken - the world is broken. Maybe weird fishes, street spirit, everything in its right place, reckoner, or.. where I end and you begin, are more accessible and interesting intro songs.
Aileen, I just really enjoy your reactions. They mirror mine so absolutely I feel like we could hang out and listen to music and chat the day away with laughter, hugs and emotion. You’re very lovely and genuine and I also appreciate the way you summarize and describe your feelings and it’s just wonderful. Theres so much beauty in music. It can take you to all places emotionally and imaginatively in such wondrous ways.
Ultimate Radiohead fever dream: Pyramid Song (cool animated video as well) My personal favourite: Just (possibly their heaviest as well) Full range in one song: Paranoid Android (2nd biggest hit behind Creep as well)
Ahhh YESSSSSS RADIOHEAD! One of the UK's greatest ever bands. Hypnotic is a great way to describe them. The thing I love about them the most is that Thom Yorke's lyrics are always deep as the ocean and very dark, but at the same time their music is ecstatically beautiful and absolutely SOARS. It is that juxtaposition that I cannot get enough of.
never thought of it before... been listening to this band since pablo honey, and have seen this video 1000 times.. but the drowning scene with the "no alarms and no surprises" refrain made me think that its symbolizing the overwhelming waves of alarms and surprises and the relief when its gone. Love radiohead so much.
LOVE you for covering this... Here cos you gave props to Queen... Another band on another level. You've got a good eye... Love from the UK "Fever dream" is about right x And as for the vibe... My guy showed us how to find solace in the depths of our (possible) sadness. Tom was criticised a lot but his vibe was so uplifting, if you care to analyse... As you did x PS, IMO you hit the vibe pretty well, with the view "It heightens your anxiety levels"... And yeah "big ASS surprise" He always drops you off in a goad/realistic place. Once again... Best reaction for this one... Doubt that will change... we see you fell it.
One thing I love about music is that no two people have the same exact analogy to describe how a song makes them feel or what scenario it makes them imagine. And there’s no wrong answers, just right answers you’ve never thought of before, but suddenly they fit perfectly. And if they don’t fit at all for you then that makes that other brain that much more interesting.
The songs about suicide. “I’ll take the quiet life, a handshake of carbon monoxide, no alarms and ano surprise, silent”. Radiohead perfectly captured the alienation, isolation & quiet despair at creeping globalisation and apprehension of technology that was so prevelant in the 90s. The Bends, OK Computer & Kid A are a perfect trilogy to represent the decade.
A few Radiohead suggestions: - STREET SPIRIT (FADE OUT): Gorgeous and dark. One of my favorite Radiohead songs of all-time. - JUST: A good one if you want to see Radiohead rock a little more (relatively speaking), plus the video has its own intriguing aspect that gets talked about a lot. - PARANOID ANDROID: A lot more going on in this song with a lot of parts. This song is an example of why I sometimes think of Radiohead as the '90s version of Pink Floyd because they take you on a musical journey (though, obvs, the vibes are different). - EXIT MUSIC (FOR A FILM): Something about the sound of this song makes me cry every time. It's Romeo & Juliet coded (it was on the soundtrack for the Leo DiCaprio/Clare Danes R&J movie), is beautiful, and very different from most other songs you've heard. - CREEP: This is the basic-B Radiohead suggestion because it's their biggest hit and the one most people start with. I suggest it partially because it's great but also because it opens the door to reacting to Postmodern Jukebox's cover of "Creep" featuring Haley Reinhart which is (1) awesome, (2) a video with over 100 million views, and (3) opens a whole 'nother rabbit hole of reaction videos that people love. Plus, because PMJ is a rotating collective of great musicians, going down that rabbit hole will introduce you to some amazing singers I don't think you've heard yet, like Haley and also Morgan James.
Thom Yorke insisted on going underwater for real in the video. They didn't have the CGI back then to make it look convincing any other way. You can see some of the bubbles sticking to his face. They just tested how long he could hold his breath, and they went with it
Good woman Aileen 😊 great reaction, my friend. Thanks for the memories. I completely forgot about this absolute tune. What a heartbreakingly beautiful song 😊

Im leaving texas for Hawaii at the moment im custom home builder but when I served as a young marine my best friend wants to me partner up with him and build Walmarts on the other islands stay safe my beautiful friend 😇🙏❤
Yes, beautiful but at the same time incredibly sad song, to me it's always been about somebody frustrated and depressed that chooses suicide, a handshake of carbon monoxide, This is my final fit, My final bellyache, get me out of here. I can visualize somebody choosing to kill themselves in the garage of their "pretty house with a pretty garden" hooking up the exhaust tube inside their car and just sitting there waiting to die. No alarms and No surprises. The video kinda hints at that too with Thom basically drowning.
Hi Aileen 😊 Great reaction to Radiohead's No Surprises😊👍 You hit the meaning of the lyrics right on the head as this song mainly is a commentary on the dissatisfaction of society and life itself hence the words no surprises as life has seemed to just go into a malaise of everyday seemingly the same the mundaneness to the point where people think what's the use. Life can get that way sometimes... Especially going to work at a job that pays well but is not very exciting... pretty much the same everyday... Your reaction if him going underwater was precious as it seemed like because of his lyrics that okay he's just going to take the easy way ,out... Reading behind this song they took influences from Brian Wilson of The Beach boys, Marvin Gaye and Louis Armstrong so they reached back to the music of yesteryear to come up with music that they can make their own😊 I look forward to hearing more Radiohead as all the recommendations look great and also look forward to your reactions to their music 😊 Have a great day you and Arya 😊👍
Interesting first song choice but of course you loved it. I’d highly recommend “Exit Music for a film” to showcase their immense talent. Also “street spirit”, “just”, and of course “Paranoid Android”. The videos are great!! So happy for you 🥲 they’re among the greatest.
Enough great songs : you , creep , stop wispering , thinking about you , the bends , high and dry , fake plastic trees , street spirit , paranoid android , let down , karma police , pyramid song , i might be wrong , knives out , killer cars ... and my favorite BLACK STAR !!!
welcome to the beautiful world of Radiohead. I highly recommend How to Disappear Completely as your next selection, I think you will love the morose vocal trip
thx for the reaction, imo luckily most don't get it (at least my interpretation). no alarm (not waking up) and no surprises (no more anxiety etc) please is the plea they give while finally accepting their (fate?) (💀). Luckily most people won't experience it but when one finally accepts their... they get a sense of calm an finality. Its happy but sad. ...again in my interpretation this song is about fighting (terrible) thoughts, and when one wins temporarily you can get a great sense of relief (out of the water)... i don't know. you seem to get it more than most, maybe i read too much into it. you won't see this of course but i still had to reply. but if you listen in the mind of someone terribly, terminally, depressed it makes more sense
I'm a new subscriber and am really enjoying your reactions. There is almost no such thing as a bad Radiohead song- almost no such thing as a mediocre track. In addition to any other commenters' suggestions don't miss 15 Steps (from In Rainbows) or Let Down (from the same album as No Surprises). I could list tons more, but really you can't go wrong. I was surprised to see no King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard on your channel- that is a very deep rabbit hole that will always surprise you. Judging from your other content I might start with the song Dragon. Mind-blowing fun.
I don’t know if I would’ve recommended No Surprises as the first Radiohead song for someone, but it’s a good song and the video is unique. Street Spirit, Karma Police, Paranoid Android, Optimistic, and Fake Plastic Trees should all be prioritized.
Ah I remember when this came out. Radiohead were so different from the rest of the Britpop movement it was actually pretty refreshing. I'm trying to think of the performance when you just see him kinda leaving it all on the stage. If I remember I'll come back. Bummed I slept in this morning, I got about 3 seconds before the twitch raid lol
I am so happy you are reacting to Radiohead!!! Such a magnificent band!!! This is off one of their masterpiece albums "OK Computer'. I also recommend "Airbag", "Just" and "Katma Police". I adore you and your videos!! 😍😍🌹🌹🖤🖤🖤🖤
I'm honored but why me I'm 39! and going on 40 plus I'm gonna be in Hawaii plus you can have any man you want with.looks darlin any man in in the entire world 🌎
The song is heartbreaking. The fact that one day you’ll wake up and realize “this is it. It doesn’t get any better than this shitty existence” is terrifying
The lyrics are so innocent looking and so dark at the same time. Those last verses "Such a pretty house and such a pretty garden". This whole album is such a masterpiece.
I've seen 3 dear freinds buried to this song. It's a very beautiful and brutal funereal song. They are such a special band for so many reasons, but Tom Yorke's lyrics and weird vocals are so important to the vibe. Loved the reaction. And yes he did alsmost drown himself for the video, but they had to slow down parts and speed up others to fit the vibe. Tom was also really annoyed thar lol
Their first single Creep was what brought them to the world and, although they've developed a great deal since, it's something you should probably check out early on for the context of that development
Radiohead is one of those bands that a lot of people don't like immediately. But the more you listen to them the more you understand their vibe. Then one day you realize it fills a musical hole in your soul you didn't realize you had.
O.M.G! That PERFECTLY describes the feelings into words
WE FINALLY GOT US SOME RADIOHEAD!!!
And it's not Creep!!!
Yeah, but I almost wish she had reacted to the album or a live performance rather than the official video, so music and lyrics would have been more prominent than the weird guy drowning in a helmet visual ;)

They had quite a slow start in the UK, but the 'OK Computer' album really seemed to strike a chord (so to speak) when it came out. It yielded their biggest single to date (the constantly evolving 'Paranoid Android') and other gems like this. I think there was a kind of down sentiment at the time, as if the party was over. Combined perhaps with what I like to call PMT: Pre-Millennial Tension.

I'm honored but why me I'm 39! and going on 40 plus I'm gonna be in Hawaii plus you can have any man you want with.looks darlin any man in in the entire world 🌎
If you get to it, check out "How to Disappear Completely". It might be one of the saddest songs ever written.
And now do “How to Disappear Completely”. It feels like something you’d like.
If you really want to check out Thom’s range and the drummers ability I suggest “Jigsaw Falling Into Place “
"Such a pretty house and such a pretty garden"
That's the point of this song for me
Please do “Exit Music for a Film” from Glastonbury 2017. Thom at his peak IMO 👌
The vocal style in this is actually really close to old English gramophone songs you'd hear in the war.
Hi Aileen: Also highly recommend the Radiohead Classics "High and Dry" and "Fake Plastic Trees". Beautiful, tender and all bare the soul of Yorke
I don't know how Ed O'Brien even learned that guitar tone for this song, or where Jonny Greenwood learned to play the vibrophone
Street Spirit - Radiohead, beautiful song
Their first single Creep was what brought them to the world and, although they've developed a great deal since, it's something you should probably check out early on for the context of that development
More Radiohead please! Thank you!!
Yes! I'd love to get more radiohead!
Gonna react to the New Slaughter to Prevail Song "Conflict?" Love your reactions. Your positivity and energy is on another level. Much Love.
Sweet voice. If I couldn't see you, I could still appreciate. Thanks
This was a good introduction to Radiohead. Now do EVERY other song :D
You should check out the live version of their song Creep
