Thanks for posting a great video on this very VERY FRUSTRATING ordeal with a Floyd Rose Tremolo!!!!
If you're having them pop out of the bridge then you need to tighten the nuts that press into the strings more, I've had guitars that have bridges with rust and they lock up and it makes you think their in fine, give em a good turn, make sure theres a firm lock on the strings
Legit. It worked for me. I've had this guitar for years. An Alvarez, I got from the pawn shop. Granted I am keeping it in dropped D for now. An extra spring would help. Got that spring holder back-back. Perhaps why it was pawned off. Can tell those screws are not original. Thanks for the info. Time to give this fixer upper some love.
Dude thanks for putting to words what my mind was trying to describe. So my action is high with really strings , so it’ll be best to get those coils in the back tightened and then tune

I have a question , my bridge is a little bit up do i just add tension then i tune ? Sorry it's my first guitar with a Floyd and im almost 3 weeks into the the journey
What should I do when the screws don't move? I detuned all the strings and the bridge is now straight. But when I tune up the strings the bridge is extremely high
@@ManBunMetalHead I had to do the same on my Jackson Js32q, i use Ernie ball skinny top heavy bottom(10-52) i was wondering does it help with tuning stability?
Hello, I have a problem when I set up my Floyd Rose guitars : when I get the Floyd to be aligned with the top from the low strings point of view, then the Floyd is at the same time plunging into the guitar from the high strings point of view. I just can't get it flat everywhere. What should I do?
When I adjust the springs the second time and then tune the strings to pitch, unlike the first time when the pitch didn't matter, should I tune it perfectly; i.e., should I stretch the strings and using the tuning method you showed in one of your videos where you tune the E string, then A, then E again and so on? And when you did the last small adjustment of the springs, did you unscrew the fine tuners halfway, unscrewed the locking nuts and then did the adjustment or was it the opposite?
This video helped me out a lot for info. Now it's time to go doctor mode. Tired of local guitar Smith telling me it'll take 2+ weeks to get it fixed the way you demonstrated. Smh.
When leveling a bridge do you then have to mess with the intonation? I have a floyd on my Jackson JS32 where the bridge is a bit high. I want to fix this but the intonation is good and I am afraid that if I level the bridge I have to intonate the guitar. Also if I have to intonate it again, is it difficult?
It depends on how much it's currently out of level, but there's a chance you would need to adjust the intonation. I do have a video on that if you decide to try it out, th-cam.com/video/gjVA0BKtqu8/w-d-xo.html. It's not that hard, just takes some patience. But really, the exact angle of your bridge doesn't matter that much as long as it doesn't affect the playability of the guitar. It just looks nicer when it's flat.
@@ManBunMetalHead Ok, I might look into it when changing strings. I play with the factory strings currently which might not be ideal. Plus the slightly high bridge doesn’t really affect my playing so I guess I might leave it as it is.
@@ManBunMetalHead Hey! I have one more question about my floyd. Is it possible for me to play at Eb tuning temporarily without messing everything up? I've actually tried tuning down a half step with the guitar once and it worked perfectly and because my bridge was a bit high at E standard it didn't really mess up my bridge all that much at Eb tuning. The intonation seemed to be perfect but I got afraid that my guitar would get all messed up so I tuned up again. So would it affect the guitar in the long run if I tuned down temporarily for some songs?
Yeah, don't worry about it. If you make drastic tuning changes you might notice the relief in the neck change, but it would probably take a lot and certainly wouldn't damage the guitar.
Just so i get this straight, if i want to go from standard tuning to a DGCFAD tuning, i will need to adjust the springs in the back every time? Because now when i tuned the guitar down just before i found this video my floyd rose went low and then got to the same normal position when i tuned it back to standard tuning. Im kinda new on the floyd rose. I have 3 springs in now but i have room for 2 more if thats the isssue so i dont have to screw every time i wanna change tuning?
If you want the bridge level, then yes, you'd need to adjust it if you changed tuning at all. That's the unfortunate part with floating trems. Taking out a spring could help, but it's unlikely it'd be perfect. Not to mention having less springs will change the way your trem reacts. Something you might want to consider is some sort of trem locking device. One that either locks the trem in place or prevents it from going low. The second option would prevent you from pulling up on the trem bar, but you'd still be able to do dive bombs.
the bridge might be level side to side but it's not that important. You'll adjust the bridge pins to set the string height, and there's a good chance the low E side will be a touch higher than the high E side. but you may not even notice it.
@@ManBunMetalHead good i drop my guit in 435... and the result is exactly what you Just said.. slightly lower on my high e string... so i get a Nice touch.... but both sides are leveled from front to back .... tanks for your time
Hey man, my action is sitting a bit high after my first string change on an Ibanez RG350DX. My mate has said NOT to ever touch these two screws at the bridge but you are saying to do it. I am very confused!!!
So I’ve put thicker gauge strings on to tune to drop c. Can’t get the bridge flush with the body of the guitar (claw is already and far up as it can go and I can’t get it to go further) Does this mean I need springs with more tension/more springs? And also would I need to adjust the truss rod if I put springs on with more tension? Thankyou
Yes, it does sound like you'll want to add another spring or buy a set of stiffer springs. It sounds like there will be a good chance you'll have to adjust the truss rod as well.
Can you explain the rationale for blocking the bridge with the battery? I've adjusted a Floyd rose to go lower and higher and in each case I just loosened the strings, adjusted the spring tension, and retuned.
Without a block you are trying to balance the tension of seven things all at once, six strings and the strings. Tuning one string changes tension on the spring which changes tension on the other strings. It's a difficult balancing act. Blocking the bridge takes the springs out of the equation. You can tune all the strings without then effecting each other. Once you have them all tuned you have the correct tension on six of the items so you can remove the block and just have one tension left, the springs.
hey man love the video helped a lot when i first got my floyd rose and i recently added new saddles and a new locking nut from the floyd rose website for my specific guitar and my bridge seems to keep getting unleveled somehow and i keep going out of tune i’ve tried everything and replaced the strings and stretched them out too idk why man i just wanna play
Pretty sure that is going to be the case with any Floyd Rose bridge. New strings introduce a variation of tension that will throw the bridge off balance.
When I attempt to make my strings sharp (my bridge is low) it brings the bridge up due to it pulling the bridge forward. Then the strings are flat again. I don’t even know why I am saying “sharp” or “flat,” because my strings are not even in correct tuning. Thanks for the info though
"Parallel" is not always work for certain guitar it is just a standard way to setup a guitar bridge .. Every guitar is different especially at neck angle some guitar maybe need a little tilt down or tilt up, for example steve vai and jeff beck both master in whammy bar playing they didn't set up their bridge parallel into the guitar body.
What could be causing my floyd rose to be so stiff? It's not blocked in the back and taking a spring out (it has 4) didn't work. I am not able to do dive bombs because my whammy bar simply doesn't dive much. I don't know what the problem is.
And what if my floyd is sitting level with the guitar, screws in back are good, neck relief is good, intonation is good, but action is still way high off the fretboard? I have a ibanez j custom with lo pro edge
@@ManBunMetalHead string height is based on how low or high the lo pro is sitting. Mine is at the corrrect height, but the strings are still high off of the fretboard. Meaning, the edge of the recces cavity and the lo pro are at the correct height, the trem itself is sitting level but my strings are still way high off the fretboard. What do i do?
I leveled my Floyd Rose bridge recently using a small level on my guitar's body on either side of the bridge, got it level on the floor, then placed the level on top of either side of the FR bridge with the strings tensioned and in standard tune. I made many spring/tuning adjustments, but to get the level on either side of the FR bridge to match what I saw on the guitar body, my spring screws are now kind of wonky. The bass side is screwed in more than the treble side. The angle of the spring plate is closer to 70° vs 90° - how bad is this and why? You mention keeping that plate straight and doing more or less equal turns for each screw. I'm using 3 springs - they are on the 3 inner hooks, one extends directly down to the center hole of the bridge/block, the outer springs attach to the outer holes of the bridge/block, leaving one hole empty between center and outer holes. The guitar seems to play ok but it and the FR system are new to me and I'm not sure how it should be.
I went ahead and redid this keeping the screws equal. It seems good, the 3 springs are now equally tensioned more or less (based on screw length), and the bridge is more or less level by eye - didn't use a level this time. I watched another video mentioning springs and his screws were more or less equal too (spring plate also at 90°) - so I figured this must be important. I'm not sure how I wound up so off balance.
hey i got a question i was using 10-46 strings and just switched to 10-52s but i cant seem to keep the guitar in tune and the bridge level at the same time can you help please
Question: I have a fully floating Floyd Rose 1000 (the guitar is a brand new Charvel) and it goes out of tune every time i bend on the 22nd fret. I have tried everything to solve my problem... the bridge is perfectly in level with the body, the string blocks are in perfect condition, there are no pieces of broken string in the saddle, everything is tightened on the bridge and on the locking nut. I have changed strings i think about a week ago, so the strings are new and properly set in the bridge. Have you ever had similar problems and what would you recommend me to do? And yes, the guitar stays in tune when i do divebombs, it only goes out of tune when i bend on the high e string above the 19th fret.
Sounds like an intonation issue. Check to make sure your open string tones match what you see when you strum on the 12th fret. If not matching, you have to move the saddle that holds the string. If 12th fret is sharper, move the saddle towards the bottom of the guitar. If the 12th fret is flatter, move the the saddle closer to the neck.
Thinking about your comment one more time, the bending action down low is actually pulling the bridge up. I don't think there's any way around that. It's just a drawback to the design you have to live with.
I’ve recently referbed my first guitar and put a new Floyd rose on it but strings are way too far from fret board do you think this is a problem with tension, bridge and springs or truss rod?
I’m trying to restring my Floyd rose for the first time now. I’ve replaced the strings but when I try to tune it back up the bridge rises a lot. I thought this video would fix it but it’s still way too high even when I’ve screwed the screws the whole way. Do anyone have any suggestions to help me solve my problem???
I doubt you'd need to remove a spring. If you're dropping your tuning significantly, you'd probably want to change to a set of higher gauge strings anyway.
Too bad I can't send pictures. I think my screws are not adjusting right or my bridge is just screwed. When I loosen the strings the bridge goes flat. When I tune them I can't get it to go flat again. It bends up like it's about fly off

Not what I was looking for as I am searching for why my springs are popping out easily from the 90 degree arms of the springs, NOT THE LOOPED SIDE. Anyway, I watched this whole video, and you did a fantastic job as a whole. Therefore, I liked, and subbed for you!
Right on man.. been lost on this for too long.. thank you.
Time to give this fixer upper some love.
thx man, i just bought my very first guitar,. and wonder it always out of tune, and you gave me the solution...
Dude thanks for putting to words what my mind was trying to describe. So my action is high with really strings , so it’ll be best to get those coils in the back tightened and then tune
thank you so much!!! I needed to know what to do as in fix the angle of the bridge, and I was trying to tune mine and I could never seem to get the bridge angled so that the back of it was down far enough. I was scrambling online looking to find some vids about this, and when you said to loosen the springs in the back a little bit, I thought I might try it! It worked within 2 minutes vs the 3 hours I spent trying to figure it out!!! Thank you!!!
Wow. Thank you for removing the stigma. So damn simple. Like many commenters here, I just fixed my crap in 15 minutes. More importantly it gave me confidence. Right now I feel like I could reset any strat Floyd. It’s pure physics. Your graphics are spot-on
Thank you so much man. I didn’t know the springs was the problem lol I thought it was the strings .
Wow, thank you, my floyd was at 45 degrees, this really helped me flatten it out!
Thanks for the help, was able to get my Jackson in check!! Earned my sub👍👍
Good info with to the point directive.nice guitar.....
If know the fs guitar properly , don't need a different kind of guitar.
Even I'm a beginner in electric guitar.
It's easy to understand because you explained it great.
subscribed. do you too or not.
Have nice day.
After wrestling with my floyd for an hour I’ve got it nearly level. It not quite flat but I don’t care anymore. If I do anything now I fear I’ll undo all my progress so I’m just leaving it.
I have an old Charvette that i love the neck but the old Floyd wont return to tune after a dive. I wish i could get this thing right. Im tryin to learn from you thanks. I had floyds a log time so i get alot of it but this is strange the hinge looks ok the saddels ok. just wont quite come back unless a hit it or pop it if you will sometimes it simply wont come back can you help?
Dude.... Fuck a Floyd Rose. My screw is a bitch to even tighten on the back. Really loving a stopbar and Nashville tailpiece right now.
I have a question , my bridge is a little bit up do i just add tension then i tune ? Sorry it's my first guitar with a Floyd and im almost 3 weeks into the the journey
You sure could
What should I do when the screws don't move? I detuned all the strings and the bridge is now straight. But when I tune up the strings the bridge is extremely high
If the screws are turned all the way in, sounds like you might need to add another spring or 2. Or change to beefier springs.
@@ManBunMetalHead I had to do the same on my Jackson Js32q, i use Ernie ball skinny top heavy bottom(10-52) i was wondering does it help with tuning stability?
Very helpful. Thank you
Your the man thank you so much this is so helpful
@@ManBunMetalHead ok thanks for help! Will try and fail my way forward :D
Is it more optimal to have the springs in a (straight like yours)| | | pattern rather than the (V shapped) / | \ pattern?
Not really, I just prefer the look.
God I love the Locking tremolos. I sold every guitar I have without a one.
Nice vidéo man.. juste one question the bridge is leveled from front to Back... but is it leveled in the other way... from e string to tje other
the bridge might be level side to side but it's not that important. You'll adjust the bridge pins to set the string height, and there's a good chance the low E side will be a touch higher than the high E side. but you may not even notice it.
@@ManBunMetalHead good i drop my guit in 435... and the result is exactly what you Just said.. slightly lower on my high e string... so i get a Nice touch.... but both sides are leveled from front to back .... tanks for your time
Thank you so much. Just subscribed
I always set a Floyd flush. I use it only for diving and not all that much. It works for stability.
Awesome vid brother, thank you!
great video, I just can't buy a guitar with a floating bridge tho. I would love 1 but I don't have the patience for this
Hey man, my action is sitting a bit high after my first string change on an Ibanez RG350DX. My mate has said NOT to ever touch these two screws at the bridge but you are saying to do it. I am very confused!!!
What is that device you are usimg to keep the bridge propped?
AA battery wrapped in electrical tape
So I’ve put thicker gauge strings on to tune to drop c. Can’t get the bridge flush with the body of the guitar (claw is already and far up as it can go and I can’t get it to go further) Does this mean I need springs with more tension/more springs? And also would I need to adjust the truss rod if I put springs on with more tension? Thankyou
Yes, it does sound like you'll want to add another spring or buy a set of stiffer springs. It sounds like there will be a good chance you'll have to adjust the truss rod as well.
Can I put (9s) super slinky’s on a Floyd rose special trem?
You sure can
Will putting a battery In there break anything over time?
I've been doing it for over 20 years and have never had a problem
Can you explain the rationale for blocking the bridge with the battery? I've adjusted a Floyd rose to go lower and higher and in each case I just loosened the strings, adjusted the spring tension, and retuned.
I typically do it so the strings don't fight with the springs when I'm first winding the tuners up.
Thank you so much!
hey man love the video helped a lot when i first got my floyd rose and i recently added new saddles and a new locking nut from the floyd rose website for my specific guitar and my bridge seems to keep getting unleveled somehow and i keep going out of tune i’ve tried everything and replaced the strings and stretched them out too idk why man i just wanna play
Super helpful Bro
Cheers🥂
Awesome, thank you!
i guess i am wondering if sooner or later a floyd becomes garbage? or should be able to fix it thanks man
Hey my floyd rose sits in high and the springs are almost touching the wood what do i do?? restring the strings?? or see a guitar tech
Great video! Thanks.
I have an ibanez rg with edge tremolo with very good tuning stability, just wish I could change strings without adjusting back springs
Sounds like you need to set your strong height.
th-cam.com/video/OI-kxH0N2hw/w-d-xo.html
Glad to hear you got it figured out. Using a level might be a little too precise for a guitar bridge.
So i just changed my string on my jem jr but there is no sound coming from open frets or fretted on all strings what do i do
Jammed mine with a block for almost 10 years...guess it's time to take it out and use it
hey i got a question i was using 10-46 strings and just switched to 10-52s but i cant seem to keep the guitar in tune and the bridge level at the same time can you help please
Love them. Never understood the hate.
I just wanna play van halen😭
I’ve recently referbed my first guitar and put a new Floyd rose on it but strings are way too far from fret board do you think this is a problem with tension, bridge and springs or truss rod?
Probably need a Truss rod adjustment to change the action if nothing else is wrong
@@djgastraytv682 thanks.

@@jamesstewart1794 oh wow yeah that might actually work thanks.

Good video extremely helpful 👍
I’m trying to restring my Floyd rose for the first time now. I’ve replaced the strings but when I try to tune it back up the bridge rises a lot. I thought this video would fix it but it’s still way too high even when I’ve screwed the screws the whole way. Do anyone have any suggestions to help me solve my problem???
Hey so I have a question for lower tunings should I remove a spring so the tremolo doesn’t sit so low?
I doubt you'd need to remove a spring. If you're dropping your tuning significantly, you'd probably want to change to a set of higher gauge strings anyway.
@@ManBunMetalHead Okay thanks 👍
What to do if i only need 5th and 4th strings to be higher..action wise...rest of strings have Nice action
Thanks brother man🤙🏼
I have screwed the claw is fully and my bridge still goes up what shpuld i do?
I would either add more springs or replace them with stiffer ones
@@ManBunMetalHead thank you
@@ManBunMetalHead gonna have to buy em since none camr with my guitar
This man single handedly saving this guitar from going out the window.
Too bad I can't send pictures. I think my screws are not adjusting right or my bridge is just screwed. When I loosen the strings the bridge goes flat. When I tune them I can't get it to go flat again. It bends up like it's about fly off
Thanks for helping me unravel this mystery, lol
I noticed the high E string is being muted by the bridge since i switched to lighter strings it seems to be unleveled
Try lowering the anchor bar above the locking nut so that the strings are sitting hard agains the nut
the bridge is not quite flat or level so i am workin on it. i have had it right many times
