    I use a block to make it fixed bridge briefly then tune the guitar. Once it’s perfectly tuned on fixed bridge I start adjusting the spring tension until the block drops or loosen up. That technique usually get it done very quickly.

    For me the fastest way to do this is: Slightly overtighten the strings -> put an AA battery under the trem, which is the perfect size to keep it flush -> tune your strings -> remove battery -> loosen springs until its in tune again.

    Duuuuuuuuuuuuude!!! I’m so stoked I found your channel. I figured you just weren’t really putting out any content...for some reason. LOVED the resurrection album and dvd. Such fond memories learning those riffs. That’s as during my first year of college when i really started being serious about getting my pick hand into shape and playing some of those complex patterns. Even switched to Jazz iii’s and totally changed how I hold the pick from the way Matt holds it to a more traditional tucked grip like yours. Crazy man.

    this is the best guide I've come across for setting up the level on a floyd!
    I've finally properly setup my LTD M-330R that was given to us last month and it had quite a steep angle when we got it, it had a Floyd Rose special and it was really annoying to setup.
    Now it's perfect! it now stays in tune when the trem bar is being used.

    Great video and explanation. Over the years especially with floyds it was trial and Error regarding setting it up, like you said. But if you get used to it, it is actually not that difficult. The 3-spring method for me doesn't work, because it is for most string gauges in combination with different tunings to weak, especially in the triangle shape. The disadvantage of that spring shape is that most of the force is on the middle spring. I always go for the 4-spring method, also for tuning stability. I recently did a setup for my Caparison dellinger Chris Amott sig. It didn't stay in tune for some reason, replaced the springs (yes they wear out) and added a fourth spring and now it is rocksolid😎🤟

I've never been able to get through a Floyd set up without putting holes in drywall or screaming into a pillow until my eyes are bloodshot, but Skyscraper's method and tools made the last Floyd set up I had to do near painless and pretty dang fast. Excellent video. One thing I've always done a little differently is I like to leave the fine tuners backed off instead of mid way, and tune slightly flat on purpose before locking the nut down. Between 20 cents to pitch more on the heavier gauge strings than on the treble strings. Then tune to pitch with the fine tuners. Only because it leaves more adjustment room in the fine tuners as the strings age and stretch from playing. I only changed my strings maybe once a month or two when I was playing regularly, it's a lazy tactic 😂

    • @RobArnoldWorld
      @RobArnoldWorld  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great tip! My only argument against this would be that I often find that the strings sharpen after tightening the nut screws. So you get everything in tune with the tuners, then tighten the nut screws, then do your final tuning on the fine tuners... And if the strings sharpened after tightening the nut screws, you need some room to back them off. Have you ever experienced this as well?

    • @tdarcs
      @tdarcs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RobArnoldWorld I found that if you leave the strings just flat enough tightening the locking nut will bring them just about right to pitch, most of the time the nut has barely any effect on the treble strings. Sometimes the low E would be sharp but I fix that by skipping it in the fine tuner adjustments and by the time I come back around it's either right at pitch or slightly flat. And then by the next day I might have to give all of them a regular tune up with the fine tuners like normal.

      @RobArnoldWorld  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kopan14 Personally I'd get the neck straight first, or suuuuuuuuper close to straight. And then if I still wasn't satisfied, then you simply lower your mounting studs, by turning them clockwise, a little at a time. So maybe start with a half turn on each, dive your bar back and fourth a few times to get things to settle, then retune, and see how it feels, being on the look out for fret buzz. Because now you'll play the balancing game of neck relief, vs bridge height. You obviously want the best feeling low action, with minimal fret buzz. (a little is acceptable).
      So after lowering your bridge, you may then need to back off the truss rod a touch, giving it a little more relief. Good luck! 🎸

So I had to add two more springs and tighten the screws all the way into wood. In the end the bridge was almost parallel to the body but the tremolo had become toooooo stiff. In the end I changed back to 9 42 as I found the tremolo impossible to use. Sounds good Darren! I'm excited for it to arrive! And I don't think having a neck thru design vs. a bolt on neck has any effect on your bridge. Cheers man!

    What is the best practice on intonation of a Floyd? Cheers!

      I'll have to make a video on the topic! I have an intonation video on my channel, but I demonstrate the process on a fixed bridge. While the same principles apply to a Floyd, it is a different animal, and is worthy of it's own video!

    Hey what’s up Rob? Maybe you can help. I have a cheapo Squier Show Master That has a Floyd Rose Licensed Bridge. The bridge looks exactly like the one in this video. If I wanted to thro an actual FLOYD ROSE on there, like the one on your guitar in this vid, will it fit right in? Also do you know what FR model is the one in this vid?

      Hey man- the bridge in this video, that comes on the 87' Eclipse, is a Floyd Rose 1000 series.
      Some people think the 1000 series is just as good as the Original series, some don't. Here's an article on the subject. www.musictoob.com/floyd-rose-1000-vs-original-korean-made-vs-german-made-tremolo/
      But, I would think the 1000 series would definitely be an upgrade to the licensed series you have in your Show Master. And I think it would fit just fine. If it were me, I'd take great care in mentally detailing how I disassembled and removed the old bridge, and then meticulously install the new bridge exactly as the old one was.
      However, rather than spending money on a new bridge for a "cheapo" guitar as you put it, I'd recommend just upgrading your guitar all together. Perhaps one that comes stock with a nicer Floyd. Because for example, if you have a cheapo car, but you put a high performance engine in it, it's still going to be a cheapo car, with too much engine in it, and it's still going to break down.
      Here is a video further explaining my thoughts on the matter, if you're interested: th-cam.com/video/s3NL_MqF-gA/w-d-xo.html
      Cheers and good luck!🎸

      @@RobArnoldWorldHey! thanks a ton for the response. I call it a cheapo but idk brother, there’s something about it I like. I own a bunch of other “fiddles” 2 LTD Black Metals, Epi Les Paul, Etc. But there’s something about the Squier that feels comfy to me like that baseball cap that fits so well, it doesn’t feel like ur wear a cap at all. If ur not sure what it looks like, it looks JUST like Kirk Hammett’s Skull n Crossbones. With skull n cross one inlays. I have EMG 81x-85’s in it. The stock bridge is blocked off at the moment but I’m thinking I might wanna bring the bridge back to life. Anyway thanks again for the info. I still cry every now and then that Chimaira is no more. But THE ELITE stuff makes wanna rips someone’s face off. I’m a Philly PoPo and sometimes patrol with ur stuff in my patrol car. 🤘🏾😆🤘🏾

      @@phillyhank8726 Haha that's awesome man and thanks for your service! Super happy to hear you're digging The Elite too! 🤘
      I totally get what you mean about that guitar being comfy. And that makes all the difference in the world. When you've got one that just plays great and feels right, then it's certainly worth maintaining. So go for it!🎸

    Is the high e side equally level with the low e side?

      I notice that the high E side might sit slightly higher than the low E side, and that's ok. But you wouldn't want too great of a difference.

    Hey, do you have any tips for new string stretching on a double locking Floyd? I never seem to get it quite enough, and I usually just delay locking the nut for a few hours of playing (not a pro musician)
    Isn't that the biggest annoyance having a new set of strings, stretching everything out, tuning, locking, and then after playing and adjusting the fine tuning a few times you run out of room on one or more of the fine tuning screws and then have to unlock the nut screws to get more...

    • @RobArnoldWorld
      @RobArnoldWorld  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yessir- In ALL of my string changing and maintenance videos, I put enormous emphasis on string stretching, so that the problem you're facing doesn't occur. Check out these two videos for a closer look:
      th-cam.com/video/AsFuw4Xm8fs/w-d-xo.html
      th-cam.com/video/d27IxfwqBLE/w-d-xo.html
      Also, there's an old saying about building a fire in the wilderness, or when you're camping, etc...
      "When you think you've collected enough fire wood to keep your fire burning throughout the night, triple or quadruple it from there."
      I believe the same applies with stretching strings...
      When you think you've stretched them enough, try then doubling or tripling your efforts.
      Good luck!🎸

    This is the exact way how a Floyd rose should be setup, but for some reason every time I purchased a guitar with Floyd rose, they have come with the bridge tilting way too forward. Also a very slight forward tilt is okay, but not too much

    Here’s a scenario. Trying to restring with a different gauge, no matter what adjustments you make the bridge still sits like “/“ and I can’t get the strings to pitch AT ALL (some strings will go to pitch and others can’t get passed floppy without knocking everything else out). This is an Ibanez UV70P brand new, switching from Ernie ball super slinky 9-54 to regular slinky 10-56. Tuning is AEADGBe

      Sounds like you need to tighten your trem claw screws! Switching to a higher gauge will cause your bridge to pop up in the back like you described, and you can counteract that by tightening the trem claw screws. But perhaps you've already tried that approach, and the issue is something deeper? Anyway, in a couple weeks, I'll be publishing a video where I'm doing a setup on a Floyd equipped guitar, and the new set of strings I plan to put on will effect my float. And so you can see how I'll go about it when only minor adjustments (hopefully) are needed. Keep en eye out!🎸
