7:40 In Ralph Macchio's autobiography, he said he regretted not speaking up when the writers wrote Ali out of Karate Kid 2. He said that at the time, he was so wrapped up in other things that it did not occur to him that he should have advocated for Elizabeth Shue to return as Ali. But years later, things were rectified, but I can't tell you now how.
To be fair I don't see how they would even fit her into the plot. Plus then we probably would have Tamlyn Tomita in this...and I personally like her more than I like Elisabeth Shue.
13:12 It is a real background. I lived in Hawaii all my life until moving to Florida a couple years ago. That is indeed the Windward side of the island of Oahu. It's very lush and beautiful there.
47:50 Mr. Miyagi left because he did not want to break the tradition and steal Yukie away from Sato. Back in the day, honor was important and the families' wishes were paramount.
6:18 Pat Morita was only in his mid 50's. I'm 54 and both my parents are still alive. I'm assuming he was meant to be about 60 in the movie, I hope I still have my parents at 60.
I grew up in Hawaii and remember seeing from afar the film set. I wish now that I had tried to go down to the set and met Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita. Lesson learned about not putting things off. Now I will never meet Pat Morita, who passed away in 2005. But I still hope to meet Ralph Macchio one day at a Comic Con or something.
That manly man in the red shirt actually taught everyone on set karate. He trained Pat Morita and Ralph Macchio with kindness and respect and with defense in mind. He trained the Cobra Kai’s more like a military boot camp. With fast paced aggressive no mercy offense.
Most of the actors and writers did not want to make KK3, especially Ralph Macchio. But when he made KK1, he had signed a contract that stipulated that if there were sequels, then he would be obligated to make the sequels. So, KK3 was just a money-making vehicle for the studio, but most people involved with the project, even the writer, Robert Kamen, did not want to do it. In fact, the original writer wanted KK3 to be about Mr. Miyagi going back in time in a dream sequence to the original founding of Miyagi Do, but the studio rejected that idea and forced him to write another script for KK3. His heart wasn't in it but he made up a story quickly, and KK3 was done half-heartedly.
I and all of my friends had such a crush on Kumiko... lol. interestingly, the girl that Daniel saved on the bell tower grew up to win the title of Miss Hawai'i in 1994...
In the 80's Tamlyn Tomita who played Kumiko was one of the few actors of Filipino decent in Hollywood along with most notable Lou Diamond Phillips who starred in the movie La Bamba. The student President of the Filipino club at my college had a big crush on Tomita.

Good morning. Yes, was filmed on the Windward side of O'ahu, on a little island in Kaneohe. If you look closely in one of the scenes, you can see a small island in the background that looks like a hat, that little island is known as Chinaman's Hat. I lived on Kaneohe Bay Drive, just 3 minutes from that location. When they were filming, the traffic was so bad. Kaneohe Bay Drive was the only road going through that area. Very beautiful area. If you have never been to O'ahu, you must definitely go to the Windward side and the North Shore, Haleiwa. Great reaction to a Great movie. Always loved Pat Morita, reminded me of my mother's dad, my grandfather, he was born in Okinawa as well, man, my grandfather could tell amazing stories about his childhood and his service in the 442nd!!! In the ancient times, not just in Japan, Okinawa, or Asia, but any culture. The turning of the cup is to show that there was no poison on the brim of the cup. Thus showing there was no poison in the drink.
Miyagi left to avoid the fight with Sato because it was a "to the death" type of fight. He didn't want to kill his friend or be killed himself. So In order to save everyone, he left.
22:10 That background was embellished with some animation, but the place they are at is near Sand Island Beach on the island of Oahu. I have been there many times, and many tourists go there.
35:18 That girl is Traci Toguchi. She went on to become Miss Hawaii and today she is in politics. She tried running for City Council Member of Honolulu recently, but was not elected.
How is his father alive? Okinawa has one of the longest living rates in the world. People often live into their 90s or older. At least this was true when I looked it up about a decade ago wondering exactly the same as you.
Karate means "empty hand" meaning no weapon. I suspect this is why it would be taught as for defense only. It doesn't make sense for Miyagi to teach Daniel to use a weapon. Also doesn't make sense to add weapon techniques to the Karate tournaments.
Y’all were not paying attention. Miyagi said that Sato challenged him to fight to save his honor. Miyagi dishonored him by outwardly saying he would break with tradition and marry Yukiya anyway even though she was bethroed to Sato. He was disgraced so he challenged Miyagi to a fight to the death. Miyagi didn’t want to fight his best friend to the death, so he left Okinawa forever. He later met and married another woman who died in childbirth. Yukiya was his childhood sweetheart and his wife was long passed. Just because he was mourning her death even years later doesn’t mean he didn’t still have some feelings for his childhood sweetheart.
The referee in the red shirt is Pat Johnson, was also in "Enter the Dragon" and "Rush Hour". In real life, he is a black belt in Tang Soo Do, the martial art that Cobra Kai dojo is based on.
This was a fun sequel, I think I enjoyed it as much as the first, like you said they didn’t make the stories too similar but it was new enough to be refreshing. 😄
I can hardly wait to see your reaction to The Karate Kid Part III! Most of Part II was filmed in Hawai'i. The opening scene was originally written to be the ending of the original movie. Yes, there was a new girl in Part III, then they abandoned the love story after she was already cast, and rewrote the script on that, because Daniel was around 17 and the girl cast was 16, but Macchio being 27 in real life found their age difference too uncomfortable. I feel bad about what they did to Ali's character just because Elisabeth Shue wouldn't take a break from Harvard to appear. Ironically, she dropped out of Harvard a couple years later, one semester short of graduation, to take over the role of Marty's girlfriend in Back to the Future II and III after the original actor left to take care of her mother dying of cancer. She returned to Harvard and graduated in 2000.
Pat Morita lived in Hawaii in the 1980s, so he didn't have to go far to star in KK2. Most of KK2 was filmed on the east side of the island of Oahu. Turns out that President Bush and his wife came to visit the set of KK2. There is a picture of the Bushes on set with Pat Morita and Ralph Macchio on the Internet. Years later, Pat Morita visited the Bushes at Kennebunkport, when Pat Morita was filming The Next Karate Kid. That photo is also on the Internet.

Miyagi left because Sato wanted to fight him to the death. Miyagi is against fighting if it can be helped, and the way to do it was to leave, even if it meant losing contact with his father and love. He left her because he wanted to fix things with Sato, and imagined they would end up marrying, which would restore Sato's honor, in his mind. But she decided she wouldn't marry anyone if not Miyagi. My only complaint on this series is that it would’ve made more sense if the storyline of 2 and 3 were switched. I understand that it’s due to not being planned out, but now it’s obvious.

In your discussion, you come up with many legitimate gripes about the Karate Kid movies. However, in Cobra Kai, many things will be explained. They retroactively fixed many of the problems that you mention. Just keep watching Cobra Kai.
I never cared the castle was pasted in. I knew where the scene was filmed because I had been there as a kid before Karate Kid 2 came out. Also it looks more fake now because of higher resolution screens. When I saw it in the movies I really did not notice and for most of my life on old tvs before higher res never really noticed much besides knowing it was put it. I still don't care. There are many good movies with backgrounds painted in or green screened in. The original Star Wars just to name one. For the movie I like the first one mainly because it was the first but this one always held something special to me as far as Karate Kid and even summer movies went.
kumiko is easily the best girl in the entirety of all the movies and the show.

In your discussion, you come up with many legitimate gripes about the Karate Kid movies. However, in Cobra Kai, many things will be explained. They retroactively fixed many of the problems that you mention. Just keep watching Cobra Kai.
They filmed the Okinawa scenes in Hawaii.

"I'm glad they didn't just try to redo the first movie..." Well, wait until you see part three....
