little tip: for the main riff at around 4:25, when you play the 3rd and 4th fret on the high D, instead of going down to the 5th fret on the A you can play the D again but open to get the same note and make it just a little easier to play
Interestingly I find that way harder, as when you play the 5th fret note you can effectively mute all the strings so you can be pretty sloppy with the right hand, but when you play the open string you have to be a fair bit more careful to not let the other string ring out. But that's just my hands. Always good to have options.
Brandon, I found the same thing after learning calm like a bomb. I practiced it hard for a day, woke up and everything I'd been playing previously was WAY easier. Learning Rage tunes is like a master class in rhythm. It's simple, but you have to commit, and you gotta bring your A game. Tom Morello is About the heaviest guy on the planet. Thanks Tom for making my pulse race more and faster than any other music group.
@@averyplaysguitar I thought the same thing, kinda what makes the song so iconic and great. But ig anger towards something you believe in isn’t for them
I play in a 90s Tribute Band and killing in the name i also in our repertoire. This song is sooo fun to play. We use 2 Tunings: Standard D# and Drop C#. It rocks the shit out of you :) Love this one!
Great job! I subscribed to your channel because in my humble opinion you're the best at teaching on youtube that I've found. I've been playing guitar for many years and I pick up what you're doing really quick. Thanks, brother!
Wonderful lesson. You just made my day :) Please do the solo lesson also. Non-whammy version will be awesome as well. Could you also go through the settings on your processor that you use to get these sounds ? Cheers !
Thank you Carl. Your economy of words let's the music do the talking, (in the words of Joe Perry). Your lessons are really well paced and easy to follow. Thank you. if I were to offer any constructive criticism, I'd say smile more. You're a baddass player and a fantastic teacher at what appears to be a very young age. Life's good. Thanks again.
FINALLY MAN! SOME RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE! great video as always man! ive been watching you for nearly a year and you taught me everything! anyway, id like to leave a suggestion, king nothing by metallica. its probably the best song out of load and reload, and id love to learn it. but look man you're amazing so keep doing what you're doing!
Could you start to show a picture or something of your settings for your setup before you start the lesson? I can hear lots of fuzz, but I would just like to get a visual, please.
Drop D tuning... It allows you to sound bigger than you are... 😂 Lmao you get a like for that sir, made my fucking day 😂 so that's what I've been doing all these years 🤣 literally laughed out loud 😂😁 thanks dude, subscribed 🤘
I'm so glad I found your tutorials! Could you please do one on Rage against the machine - Sleep now in a fire. I've been searching but I cant find anyone who is teaching that song!
Ok this is coincidental I was playing Know Your Enemy yesterday and thinking that you really should do some rage! And you'd already started... Cool vid.
Excellent Lesson and Playing as always Carl....a humble request: Can you share the effects & settings you're using since the reverb/echo you're getting is vital to the "sound" of this song. Thanks!
Im sure you have thousands of comments to sort through, but would you be willing to cover "inside out" by eve 6, if you havent already? Much love and keep up the amazing work!
It's alot easier if you do palm muted with your picking hand and you can do it on any fret but it's also easier to just let go of the d string in the main riff rather than going to the fifth fret of the a string
Can you make a video on why does love got to be so sad by derek and the dominos? I love your videos so much and you help me learn guitar and thats a song i'd love to learn!
How do I get that crunchy sound on my guitar….? I do not have a distortion box…I know there’s lots out there….but which one to get to hear this crunchy sound….thank you
I've watched dozens of tutorials on this song just to brush up on it after learning a couple years back and I still dont know that solo... Carl would you please do a video on it when you have some spare time. No other teacher on here (marty or justin, mostly)that i watch will do the solo. I own the whammy pedal.
Red Actual its an octave pedal that Tom uses for that solo. It's pretty easy to pick out the beginning notes. follows the chords mostly. If you find the first note of each phrase as a starting point, he hits those notes first and then steps and releases the octave pedal. Try to hear the solo without those octave jumps and it's easier to pick out. Hope that makes sense and helps. Without that pedal it's tough to replicate. Good luck. Great song
hello carl thanks for the tutorial it helps me to improve playing my guitar, even though i am not professional musician its just like a hobby for me. can i request tutorials from you? i hope you can create tutorial of "the ghost of tom joad by bruce springsteen and tom morello", the guitar solo in this song are very melodic and different style from tom. i will be great if you create video tutorial for this song. thanks in advance carl keep up the good work.
Hi everyone, I am just about to learn the song but I get confused when getting into the beats per minute. I always use a metronome but in this case it looks like it is not always the same beats per minute. The main riff it is about 88bpm but I get confused in the intro. How could I practice the song using an stable beat? Should I change the metronome depending on the part of the song I play? thanks a lot. All the best. Kevin
Youre so much better than that Marty guy, his lessons were just so wrong even by the naked ear. BTW I learned the hard part in Sunshine of you Love because of your lesson. cheers mate!
Marty is exceptionally good at some guitar but I have to agree with you. For some reason he plays every cover song completely wrong. But if you wanna learn some good blues then he’s your giy
lmao, his presence too, marty seems so like... smug? there's just something about him that makes him hard to watch, he's talented but i feel like he's wasting em doing what he's doing? he just isn't the best teacher, i get that he gets it but i am trying to learn

I thought i was the only one who realize that 😂
nah than you cant do a vibrator on the string idiot
@@jamesbaciu7668 first of all you're not supposed to do a bend on that note anyways. second of all, vibrator? who's the real idiot lmao
Interestingly I find that way harder, as when you play the 5th fret note you can effectively mute all the strings so you can be pretty sloppy with the right hand, but when you play the open string you have to be a fair bit more careful to not let the other string ring out.

@@waveymattdavey interesting perspective, makes sense too if your play style is a little looser. options are definitely nice lol
Not a huge Rage fan, but learning this song taught me how to play with attitude. Thanks Carl 👨🏻🌾
This is the only song of theirs i know. I fucking hate the lyrics but goddamn the guitar is beautiful
Very true, this is definitely a song that you have to play with feel and attitude or it won't have any effect at all

I think we need more Rage against the machine these days, their songs are just as relevant today as they were back in the 90s
If not even more 😅
yea idk bout that one, it was pretty fitting for the war in the east. but they will always be relevant

Carl you're a real one for this. Great memories getting jacked up to this before football games, and super fun to play. Youda man as usual.
tom morello uses a tele for all his drop d songs, he said in his premier guitar rig rundown that he is always in the neck position
One of my favorite lessons Carl. Thank you. This one is so much fun to play

Dear Carl, many thanks for this inspirated lesson. Easy to follow - just great. Best greetings from switzerland.
