    That first one might not have been a keeper for regular sportsmen fishing, but for survival fishing, it'll keep you from starving. Great demonstration, keep up the good work.

    Dave you make that look so easy. That's a neat idea thanks for the video. I remember seeing one sometime back where someone made one out of PVC. I guess if you go to the hardware store and poke around you can figure out what all you would need. I remember growing up as a kid we always use cane poles. They were pretty fun and if you landed a bluegill on one of those things, oh boy did you have a fight on your.

    Good job Dave. I fill my casting bubble half full with water. That way it will still float but the added weight will allow you to get the fly or bait out deeper.

    You got a ton of really cool videos put on TH-cam over the years, but this one here is a real gem! It sums up your creativity, skill and the true love you feel for the things that you do.
    Greetings from Switzerland and many thanks for being such a passionate and talented teacher that is above all generous about sharing his hard earned wisdom with your audience. Last but not least, I very much appreciate the high quality of video and audio that is consistently top notch. I'm a long time subscriber that watches almost every one of your clips for now more than ten years and I'm glad to say that I never got bored even a second.

    Nice kit. One thing I would add is a couple Gulp soft plastic lures, whichever type fits your area. These have scent in them, and can be used as a lure or broken into pieces and fished as bait. They are tough enough to withstand several strikes, and hold the scent for a long time. I use these regularly when salt water fishing with standard rod and reel, and have never been disappointed with their performance.
    There are other brands that are similar, like Power Bait, so choose whichever one you like best.
    If you have water in your area, fishing is the fastest, easiest way to score a quick meal without drawing attention to yourself, and fish can be prepared quickly or even eaten raw without much concern over parasites or harmful microbes in the meat.

    Iv never seen a casting bubble before (based in the UK) is it filled with water to give it some weight?
    Great addition if so!!
    Thanks for all the inspiration over the years, you are one of the reasons that I now make a living teaching survival with my own business.

    A plastic pop bottle is the best . The shape enables extremely long and smooth casts and a ton of line is easily wrapped around it...far more than is needed , that can be used for other things.

    Now this is a neat hand line kit. Just find a nice piece of river cane and your on your way. Great job Dave.
    I would add a few "Fly Fishing" surface poppers. Those thing always seem to catch fish when everything else fails. Yellow seems best.
    Tie the casting bubble with the narrow end toward you, it creates the least distraction that way. You may be surprised how many times a fish will strike the bubble. ;-)

    Is the bamboo from the school property? Do you think bamboo the size you used for the main tube would be big enough to make the tripod bed you’ve shown on your channel a few times?

  • @michaelallen9571
    @michaelallen9571 ปีที่แล้ว

    Im not a great fisherman but I know the basics somewhat. What is the best line (strength) and size hooks do you or most people recommend for a basic kit?

    • @maxlutz3674
      @maxlutz3674 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like to use a 8 to 10 lbs line and #8 or #6 Gamakatsu Octopus circle hooks in freshwater. The hooks are strong, crazy sharp and easy to set by just putting some tension on the line. If you expect big fish scaling up the line might be called for.The handline in the hobo style is no setup for really big fish anyway.

    Ummm... can't find anything on your website.
    Search 'survival gear', search "bamboo", search "handline", search "fishing". Try it yourself ....
    Nothing.... zero results that are pertinent to this video.
    Regardless....
    Bamboo is such a versatile and durable material. Cheap, plentiful, renewable, and strong!!! Such a great choice for a compact fishing drop-line spool (reel?).
    However, bank line....? Whilst bank line is very strong compact and versatile...is not ideal for fishing when compared to modern braided monofilament varieties.
    Number 12 bankline can do nothing that a similar strength braided fishing line can't do better. Snares, cordage use, price per yard/meter, weight, thickness, visibility, stretch capacity, breaking strength....... precisely what benefit does #12 bankline offer over any 100lb braided fishing line? Floats? Walmart sells floating braided fishing line... $9.57 for 75 meters (247ft).
    Prove me wrong, but before you do... please update your link to something slightly more specific than a homepage. Show us the actual item link.
