Hope you enjoy this short one. For those from the U.K., remember it is illegal to use a handline in freshwater rivers and lakes, but you can use them sea fishing 👍🏻
buddy i lost my dad end of february, when i discover ur chanel i show it to my bad then he was checking on his own, so great, so peaceful u have one of kind YT chanel, never change its dope ! :) we love nature since forever and ur content is amazing. he wanted to gift me a hatchet that's he saw on ur vids. we live in the city but we are lucky to have a family house in the mountain where i spend all my holidays. and he was like we could chopped some stuff and try to create things like u do :)
Thank you for your nice videos, and most particulary for your elocution ; you speak slowly and you articulate, so I can get all the words since I'm French. I looking forward to try the hobo fishing line, but I think I must be the worst fisherman ever : I even failt to catch fishes with a bottle trap ( but maybe the entrance hole was too big, and they gone out after eating some bread ). Hopefully, my meal that night ( last night actually :D ) wasn't depending of that catch
@thopkins22 misinformation?? this law was most likely implemented to protect salmon and those land owners whom earn money from them being caught. They charge by the rod. Poachers tend not to use rod and reel but handline and net or even barehand (tickling).
Very valuable video! Thank you! You really show precisely how to make a poacher’s stick. You don’t assume that all viewers are experienced woodcarvers. Bravo!
Old wooden pepper mills are great, has a nice saddle to them and easy to grip on the hand. And having breathable storage helps prevent things getting funky
I bought the Ka-bar Kaster but I know I'll be making more on my lathe for gifts and I may make my son one like you showed how to do, he likes old methods. I'm glad I watched, it was well made and explained, I learned how to make a capped end from your video which could be applied on other projects. Love the simplicity of this type of fishing, I think I'll like it
Michael nice looking carve you did. Glad you caught a small bass. You're right about if it's a big one let it wear out first. Hey love it when Dustin teams up with you. Thanks for sharing Mike 👍 ... Arkansas Clyde 🇺🇸✌️
I've never really done fishing, got a phobia of the water and that kind of thing, but watching these is always fun to do. The creativity of it is nice!
Good to see someone else using the little sewing machine spools, for storing line and thread, I get them from a "Chinese emporium", 4 on a card for about €1. I always have a few in my pack with different line and threads stored in a Lidl's soluble vitamin container. I always have a handline in my kayak.
I worked w some Mexican guys on a horse farm when I was younger. They would wrap line around a beer bottle and twist it to reel it in. It worked! They caught just as many fish (or more) than the guys using traditional rods and reels.
Nice work Mike! I too make gift hobo reels. I have 6" clear tubes with tapered cork stoppers. I wrap the reel end with duct tape & triple up 1" Ranger Bands to create the spool, I run 3lb mono, tie on a snap swivel & attach a #8 snelled hook which I fasten down to the spool with a R. Band & I lightly stick the hook into the cork stopper, so it's ready to go on site. The tubes are filled with hooks, split shots, jigs/heads, spoons, inline spinners etc & a small cut off piece of cork stopper is a float if needed. You might want to add to your hearty collection: a Cuban Hand Reel- it looks like a plastic tire hub- 6" or 9" or 12" diameter, bright colors. Only glitch is left handers have to respool it lefty. Hold it 4 fingers & use your thumb as the drag & tensioner. Ciao!
I saw a dude from afar fishing with this and he actually caught a fish and it looked like it was levitating and him waving his arms and ish I was like what kinda witchcraft is that lol
You can use a flat spool from child’s kite too. Easy to pack but it can’t hold any extra items. Here in the southern USA, I see Mexican men simply wrapping fishing line around their hands to catch fish. All your ideas shown here are really good.
@@pferoxtheskeeterguy we did the coke can kite line at a lake in my home town (in south texas) and caught 2 decent sized fish. If it's available and works go for it I say. I'll definitely pick me up one of these in the video though.
Hi again, it was myself and friend john who made the first hobo line you showed, i have improved it over the years, glad you are still using it lol , handy bit of kit to have, should last a lifetime. Keep up the good work👍
This is wonderful! I've been wanting to better learn how to fish, but i'm also interested in backpacking, bushcraft, etc and felt like taking a fishing rod probably wasnt a thing. This is the solution! Other than perhaps bow fishing... Lol. This is more discreet.
Excellent Mike, this video as helped me loads mate. At the end it shows how effective the hand line is. I'll be on this and making one at the weekend. Big thanks man 👍
That looks Awesome Mike 👏 I think I will have a go at making one of those in the next day or so 🙂 great video, really interesting & informative 👍 Take care & Stay safe my friend 🙂🙏👍
All you have to really do is buy a heavy braided line on a spool & cut out the spokes in the inside of the spool , sand the inside so sharp plastic don’t cut you & drill out 8 small holes 4 on each side of the spool but you need to stagger them , you use these for making a loop & thread it thru one of them & hang from a tree voilà you have yourself a yo-yo like fishing thingy . Use a 30 pound braided line if you don’t want your line to snap or you don’t want the fish to get away . You can always carry your tackle in a small thick ziploc bag that way if you happen to land a big fish & you get the spool taken out of your hand you still have the rest of your tackle minus your spool & line . I made numerous ones & I always have one handy where ever I go .
I’m sure eating it won’t effect the rest of the population bro. Governments should be holding corporations and companies responsible for over fishing.. not us! Loved your vid and will be making mine tomorrow! Cheers from Australia

Super nice vid m8. As I live near a river & several creeks here in the US. Been looking 4 something like this. Always getting snagged up in trees & brush on the banks. Hoping this type will help.
Hi Michael, A possible improvement, use braid, something like 50lb same size as 15lb mono, the only drawback is line burn but you get this from mono as well. The positive side is instant feel and no stretch on the strike. Tight lines, Mark
Yes, but braid is not abrasion resistant like mono, it would be useless rock fishing with this unless I tied a very long leader of mono or fluorocarbon
seen a vid, hobo fish line one end, made from plastic pipe, hooks etc inside.. top end.. The handle again plastic pipe, had snares etc in it.. looked good, always looking to minimse, etc..
I was fishing one time without a rod, just a reel. I put alot of weight on so I could get a good cast, but forgot to let go of the release button and I hooked my friend in the nose right below his eye. We had to go to the ER and have it removed. So I'll second the part about not fishing around people with the hobo reel
Beautiful job. Good video. Safety Tip * Never.....I mean never....wrap the line around your fingers or hand....lest you want to maybe use them for bait, particularly braid. Many a angler has lost his digits when a large fish hits on the run.....particularly salt water fish that can swim and strike upwards of 30 mph. My brother was on a charter boat and one of the guests was trying to pick out a backlash when suddenly his finger was lying on the deck. They had to summons a helicopter to come get him.
Hi Mike! You ever look into Tenkara fly fishing for your hikes? Really awesome tool for those fisherman who like to reach remote streams for that trout bite ;)
I use a fishing rod with an extra ferrule fashioned from a piece of wire. This ferrule sticks out 3 or 4 inches from the rod, so i can wind the hobo reel around it with my right hand. Would this possibly be a legal rod and reel in the U.K.? And those are some cool reels you have. Thanks for sharing.
Think you should have mentioned that Hand Lining or using a Hobo Reel is illegal in Ponds and Rivers in the UK, but as shown can be used coastal fishing.
This video is more about making of the handline, with some sea fishing at the end. It's not about the laws of it. But I've popped a link in the video description to the gov website on laws and byelaws of fishing in UK freshwaters.
Not really on topic for this video, but... seeing as you have a daughter now, how about some bushcrafted baby gear? Even just as proof of concept, I understand 6 months might be a bit young to *actually* bring her out into the woods with you, but just imagine IF you had to bug out into the woods, while keeping her safe and happy, what would be some challenges of that?
Why wouldn't you want to use a 30 + braided pound test,so you don't get hung up,you can just pull it in,I don't know, that's just what I put on mine anyway,I've used it in the Ohio river,it did well with a 20 lbs catfish ..
Ok, I watched it again to see if I missed an explanation, but I don't see one. On the hand-line you made, what is the item attached with rubber bands? It looks like a disposable pen. Do you write your name on a fish that has to be thrown back, or what?

Back in the early 70’s I saw the street kids in Mexico using this method fishing for bass and other game fish . It worked .
Nice job. You're becoming quite adept at these "how-to" videos! Thorough explanations. Nice job.

👍 I grew up, in south Louisiana USA, and my fishing rig was a Dixie beer can 😁 Of course beer cans were made of tin and not aluminum back then.
I seen coke cans used,aluminum
Not that I didn't enjoy earlier ones, obviously, because I'm still watching but I'm really enjoying these 'new style' vids. More of each please. 🙌🙌🙌

Yep or even a crab line can be used
In Texas they used to call a Coke Bottle a "Mexican Fishing Rod" because so many were used for hand lines.
