Until the recent album, they never included lyrics to the music, this was done to encourage people to listen to the music first, and then the listener has the opportunity to delve into the lyrics and interpret and use or not, individually as it pertains to them. So anyone who wants to tell you, your interpretation is wrong or flawed, are mistaken. The songs are tools, for the individual to use on a personal level. Looking forward to your next video.✌🤘🤘

SuperJersh I'm 56 and I just discovered them a year ago. I was hooked from the first listen. To me these guys are my generations Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd . Zeppelin was one of the first to mess around with odd time signatures. TOOL took it to another lever. I love how when the time signatures align the music explodes in harmony and when the time signatures separate it's beautiful chaos. Each of these bands have Great rhythm sections (Bass and Drums) combined with amazing Guitarist and Iconic vocalist/lyrics.
This song is a really poetic view of a disfunctional relationship. People get stuck in these kind of relationships where the abuse, both physical and emotional, become so normal they either can't or won't face that it's not how a relationship is meant to be. I think you were quite right on how the music helps tell the story of what's going on. At the end you can really hear the chaos as the lyrics discuss finally breaking down and bringing the relationship to a violent end.
There is a recently released video of Danny Carey on drum cam performing Pnuema from Fear Innoculum live that is an absolute pleasure to watch. The human octopus always impresses
It's beautiful. I love his beaming smile in the thumbnail screenshot. It's that moment where Justin, the bassist gestures to Danny, his own excitement. That shared pocket.

Yes, please also do the live version. IMO better and 1 of best live recordings ever. Vocals are unreal & the pace of the song better matches the meaning I feel (the long build up to ultimate end). No Quarter from Salival also is 1 of best covers ever !

I’ve been listening to Tool since my sophomore year of high school (‘96). They have always been my go-to band whether I’m happy, angry, sad, or whatever. They are the nice warm blanket that is perfect to wrap up in no matter what I’m going through. I love watching first time reactions to what I consider the GOAT, and your reactions are always so well thought out, insightful, and make me think. From one Tool veteran to a newbie, keep up the solid analysis and enjoy the ride. The songs just get better the more you listen to them.
Dude your a freaking genius. The anger gap ... YESS !!!! I’ve been listening to tool since 1996 and you give me a completely different perspective and bring a whole new light on music I have loved for over half my life
You should react to the fan incident with this song. I forget when it was but a guy jumped on stage and Maynard, who had a martial arts background, took him down mid song and held him down whilst continuing to sing for the rest of the song 😂 it’s amazing
Thanks. Unexpectedly good. I haven't listened to Tool for about 15 years and either I've changed or they got much better! This gave me strong Hawkwind vibes, back when one of their instruments was LSD and their bassist was Lemmy Kilmister.
I first heard this song in 1997, when I bought the CD, having only heard Stinkfist and H., and the initial fifteen seconds of songs 1-5 on headphones, at The CD Store in Riccarton Mall. Unfortunately, they had just played live in my city, a couple weeks prior and I'd missed it.
I think this song is an internal struggle. Introspection. Like in 46 and 2 he talks about his shadow. Which in Jungian philosophy is the dark side of our psyche. The gap is the space between his ego and shadow. There's an excellent live video you can see where a drunk fan approaches Maynard and gets hip tossed. And then he continues to sing the song flawlessly while he pins the dude down.
When you say that you imagine him walking around in the gap and going into the anger it made me think of the album cover because in the middle it’s the peace of mind but then there’s a gap of black and white and then the black side is all the anger and screams and rage
SuperJersh for Live performance, after you do Pneuma off of Fear Inoculum, you have to react to Danny's just released Vic Firth drum cam. It's three diferent camera angles and the audio sounds as good as a studio recording. A great mix and watching the Octopus is mesmerizing. Here's the link. th-cam.com/video/FssULNGSZIA/w-d-xo.html
thx! part of the fun is literally talking out my thought process as i'm experiencing it, it's one of the reasons why i break it down as the song goes along instead of just waiting till the end, it let's me describe my internal thoughts and how they change honestly instead of getting to the end and acting like i had one whole idea/thought about a song the whole time haha
I always felt the gap referred to the differences between the 2 people in a relationship - noticing that & understanding it means the relationship is not going to work long term, but then staying in / being unable to leave it anyway. Leading to the inevitable uglier end.
My favorite lyric is “hands are on my back again” something you think is him hugging himself??. But I find it powerful imagery of him being shoved (pushed) into the gap that he was trying to stay out of. It’s the whole point of the song. Not wanting to be pushed to the point but survival (fight or flight) has been activated by the shove or physical push into the gap
I go back and forth but in general I do love the live version more. I love the use of tabla and I believe Alotta (Danny's tabla teacher. Danny is the drummer) helped with it live, on that recording. Definitely went on tour with them back in the day. Not sure how many shows though.
I interpreted the "staring down that hole again/hands are on my back again/survival is my only friend" portion completely differently. To me, it sounds like he's staring down that giant hole of anger that he cannot come back from, and the other person has their hands on his back pushing him over the edge. Survival is my only friend - he's feels like something in him or the relationship is about to die, but he's being yeeted off the cliff - only one thing to do. He's got to kill the other person.
Definitely check out the Salival version of this song, if you havent said you are yet. Even better than the studio version, imo, and it has a different emotional take on the meaning. I like to think Maynard goes back and forth with the two emotions a lot, especially back in the day.
I'm not sure the end I took it as hands on my back again like you're trying to walk away and somebody grabs you from behind cuz then it says survival is my only friend so just as a reaction someone touches your back you're going to react violently back towards it I don't know , that's the way I took it
Really great first take! I love your thoughtfulness and insight, especially on a first listen. But you really do now need to hear the live Salival version while this is fresh in your mind. In fact, I'm going to go listen to it right now, lol.
