Maybe I’m new to the whole TH-cam drum tech thing, but setting the kit up on the riser and then rolling said riser to the stage, at least to me, would make more sense. Wouldn’t you say?
@@davidmcaninch4714 haha yes of course. And if the rental company hadn’t shown up late with the riser, that would’ve been the case. I was filling in for this gig on drums and playback, so my goal was to get the heads changed and set up the kit to make sure it was what the drummer preferred, since even with memory locks things can move in transit. The riser showed up while I was getting things adjusted. Once it was there I moved things off the rug and put everything up on the riser. Then the riser was rolled to the stage and picked up with a forklift and put on the stage. If a tour (which this was just two fly date shows btw) has a riser it travels with, I would’ve been able to set up the riser first and do it in that order. Hopefully that makes sense to you. Every gig I’ve had is different and even some have the drum kit actually bolted to the riser which makes it even easier! Let me know if you have any other questions on drum teching, hopefully I can help if you are looking to get into it!

Since it was my first gig filling in for them, I wanted to make sure everything was in order with my carpet markings and placement. Plus we didn't know when the risers were going to show up, so I started working before the truck with the rented risers even pulled in. Normally I would set it up on the riser right away if it was there.
Depends on a few factors, the number of heads we have in stock, how beat up they are, climate affects a lot of it too. But most drummers that have techs work out a schedule. I was only filling in for their drum tech but most of the bands I work for I normally do the toms every 2-3 shows and the snare every 1-2 shows. Just depends on the situation and the drummer!
Hey Dave, I notice some bands already have the risers etc. But in this case, does the venue supply them? How does that work normally? Great vids, brother!
It was a stage rental company for these two shows, but normally if it’s a tour you’ll travel with your riser in the semi/trailer with the rest of the gear.
Love that you are doing this but not getting why you set up the drums on the ground then have to do it all over on the riser? Obviously you know what you are doing but seems like a lot of extra work. Maybe do the Matt Horn method and set them up on the riser to begin with.
You’re correct I normally would, we actually didn’t get the riser until I was halfway set up if you watch the video. I wanted to adjust everything and make sure the memory locks were right and sometimes the drummer likes to sit behind the kit so I wanted to have it ready just in case. Yo, cool as always!...Does that Porter and Davis BC2 have 2 mic inputs? (If that is what it is)....I have 2 kicks, can't seems to get a straight answer anywhere...
You should be able to get any signal to come through one cable since it’s plugged into a console that can send signals to it. Hope that makes sense. You don’t plug straight into the seat from the kick.
@@blackdrumz I never run any cables to the BC2 except for power and the power con cable to the throne. The whole kit is mic’d and then runs to monitor world and front of house. We didn’t travel with the riser for these two shows, so I was waiting on the rental risers to show up. I knew I was limited on time so I set up the kit to be sure all my placement was correct, and the riser showed up as I was doing that. But normally yes, build on the riser if the kit doesn’t travel mostly built.
I guessed it, I'm my drum tech, you know, low budget mini tours, and sometimes is a pain in the ass when you have a Big kit and not raisers, you expect that people from the venue put the raiser and then they have a mini raiser, 2x2 meters....when you need a 3x3, then rental or making magic to put all in the mini raiser. Sometimes is an adventure before I play drums live, nevermind if you sent all the specs. David, do you have more footage with Disturbed? Congrats for your great work with such great bands!!!!! Cheers bro
Say what? Gotta know that what’s real? Gabe has a very active TH-cam channel, you can see it’s real through his page lol. When they are playing I’m working so it’s not as easy to get footage.
I have played drums and percussion instruments for many years but I will never understand why people enjoy watching this drum tech videos Watching him slowly set up stands no audio, just back and forth setting up stands I was falling asleep at the 11 minute mark Maybe it’s because I’ve done this so many times it’s just not fun to watch

Then they send us a single line to the BC2 with whatever output we need usually ran from monitor world. So depends on the drummer for what he needs in the thumper line. Does that make sense?
Hey man, Thanks for your time!...so let's say no sound system. Can I plug 2 of my D112's into the BC2? (2 mic inputs)..Or just 1 mic capable...
@@blackdrumz According to what I looked up on google, you can plug your kick drum directly into the BC2. Doesn't say anything about 2 kicks but I bet you could try and see what it does!
Sooooo what are those black dots with cables hanging off the shells? Some kind of internal mic system?
Those are actually drum triggers, used for our front of house engineer as gates.
What kind of snare Gabe is using
Pearl Reference 14" x 6.5" Rolled Brass Snare Drum
Wen ASMR drum tuning vid?
lol I do have a drum tuning video I made a few years back on my page you can check out. That’s how I tune for all my gigs.
What head are you running on the kick?
Evans EMAD2 on the kick with the smaller of the two foam pad options. Reso head I’m not sure, I think just a standard reso head with their artwork on the front.
@@DavidNesterDrums sounded so great in that arena when you were sound checking
@@patshaughnessy8488 good! That’s always the goal!
What happened to Matt?
Matt? Their old tech is named Josh, and I was just filling in for a couple shows.
If you’re talking about Matt Horn, he works for a band called Falling in Reverse and is also joining the A Day To Remember crew this summer.
It took 5 guys to build those two risers! Alot less work involved than the one guy who built up the kit.
@@steviek8506 not wrong lol
Hey how’s Gabe doing
He was good for those two shows I helped with!
@@DavidNesterDrums love to see it
please keep vlogging
I'll do my best!
grab yourself a right and left golf glove. no more finger prints and the grip is amazing and it dont feel like you are wearing gloves
Not a bad idea, I sometimes wear gloves when setting up hardware or rubber gloves when polishing cymbals.
@@DavidNesterDrums the gloves gloves are your best bet i recommend the foot joy pair. i use them for set up and polishing. i wouldn't use them for cleaning tho. not sure how the chemicals will react to the gloves. good disposable rubber gloves is all i would use for that
@@JaydepoolMusic I'll check it out for sure thank you!
@@DavidNesterDrums no problem
Great video Dave !!! My erotic dream , Matt and you doing a drum POV , hehehe.
Dont you travel with a raiser? Because you mount the drums before to do it over the raiser
Cheers from Barcelona!!!!!
Cheers bro
Bro, you gotta show us the band... we gotta know that that's real.
So...why u watching then...guess you have some pondering to do.
@@Indytantrum10 This was my first time and wanted to see the content Boring as hell Won’t be back!! Ponder that
@@davepounds8924 😂😂
Triggered much...
Always love the feedback, I have plenty of shorter videos with background music that might be more entertaining for you. But also… you don’t have to watch if it’s boring you. It’s super easy to skip to the next video…
Thought Gabe didn’t use a drum tech lol someone’s slacking
Haha 😆 he’s slacking?? Naw his band is getting to a decent size and can afford crew members. Plus at a certain level the band shouldn’t have to load in and set up their own gear lol.
If you’ve got a drum tech as a Turing band u r doing the opposite of slacking
need to see that Indonesian incident from your pov
No idea what you’re talking about.
Great video yo. All due respect Dawg the short videos in musik biz my opinion no good. I wouldn't even click on it less than 20 25 minutes. Hour easy. I get it it's alot work.
Dude why r u setting them up on the rug ground. Complete waste time
@@BigDaddyChumChum 😂 normally that would be correct but we didn’t have a riser at the time. The rental company didn’t show up on time, and it was my first gig, so I wanted to get it set up and check the memory locks and tuning. It just so happened to show up when I was checking everything. Btw we all have our methods, and normally I would set it up right on the riser, that’s kind of a given. Thanks for the opinion tho lol
