It is a valid comment. My experience with triathletes entering crits has been horrible. I stay away from them until they've learned how to corner and race around other people.
Horrible racing tactics, yet extremely fun watching Dan act like a boss. I would love to see more of Dan using his power profile with some good tactics
I mean idk, 2nd place in a Crit is pretty insane for just going full gas the whole time... Also huge power move to attack the guy he broke away with lol
Dan.. Unleash Hell, when the time is right. The start of the race is never the right time. Insightful video as always! I feel sorry for anyone racing against Dan, even moreso when Dan gets more experienced, skilled, and patient in crits.
That looks like a pretty narrow course. You could easily get stuck behind a group while the winning break gets away. If I had Dan's power I'd want to get out in front of the pack right from the gun too, cyclocross style.
Start of the race is often the time it splits. Agree it isn't often the winning move, but you have to be in front or you could end up in a second or third group with awesome legs but nothing to be raced for.
Philip Maynard The start only works if you have a team or temporary allies willing to alternate draft with you. Almost everyone will let you waste your energy and just leech the draft
Coach: "So what you want to do is go hard for a lap and a half, then settle in and mark your competition. Take mental notes and cover attacks. Share work with others, steady rotation pacelines, don't forget to fuel. Triathlon Dan: "Go 100% full gas from gun to checkered flag? Gotcha!"
Some of Dan's speed readouts HAD to be wonky....like maintaining 35 MPH solo into a headwind. If not, he might as well skip the next steps and take on the Tour De France. Definitely impressive regardless.
That was awesome to see. Look forward to seeing him hitting Alviso and lapping the field. Some more experience and instead of dropping 1-2s at each corner on those behind I expect he'll be going solo yolo the whole time. He's got the legs and the pumper to whitewash the field.
It's not unusual for a trained athlete to show up to a race for the first time and demolish the field. I've seen this happen at collegiate races when triathletes from the same university showed up to the home race to race C or D categories and went solo from the flag drop. They also trained with us on Wednesday worlds, so they were just as strong as A or B riders. Still, and not to sound more discouraging, those power numbers and crit racing on a windy day are quite impressive. The weekly race series in Britain is fun!
Yes, had a high level cross country runner get on a bike for a 40 minute crit. He wasn't fast, turned like a duck yet we couldn't maintain his remaining power. Guy got caught out in the final sprint and finished 5 of 40. Said he'd never do it again, too scary.
Just for info - cat 4 crits like this one are the EASIEST crits we have in England. There is no cat 5. For someone trying to get into crit racing there are ridiculously high barriers to entry fitness wise!!! My FTP of 240 got me dropped after 1 lap in the last crit I did
Once upon a time I had an experience where a magazine writer/nationally ranked triathlete jumped in the Cat IV field on a weekend stage race (I'm talking about you Tom D.). He didn't bury us too bad in the TT, but jumped with three laps to go in the afternoon crit and rode away from the field. (late 80's when we had 90+ riders in Cat IV races) We marked him on the road race next day so he couldn't get away, but neither could anyone else. A strong athlete is a strong athlete, and if they race their strengths & train their weaknesses, they will do well. Fortunately for the rest of that season's racing, USCF mercifully quickly upgraded him to III then II.
Jeff, in many Triathlon races, drafting is legal, i.e., Sprint Triathlon (20 km bike) and Olympic distance Triathlon (40 km bike),so short distance triathletes know how to draft mostly.
For an endurance athlete, triathlete or not, power peaks are a non-issue because recovery is quick enough. Plenty of shots available. Problems start if you're sustaining a high power for a long time. Basically they need to know what power is sustainable and keep it at that level with a few peaks and valleys rather than keep it constant above sustainable.
as someone that raced triathlons and moved to crit racing, it took a while. power is not the issue, its the technical ability. cycling is so different to triathlon. triathlon is just a time trial with 3 sports, there is not racing. cycling is actual racing. why i switched after 30 or so races it became boring.
@@Second247 there is one series, ITU I think, that allow drafting. Sprint distance can be more fun even with no drafting in that regard because there are just more people around as the race is much shorter. It's not unusual in a half or iron distance event to be out there sort of on your own for a reasonable distance.
@@morosis82 ITU doesn't exist anymore, now called World Triathlon, and is reserved for elite racing. Local draft legal races don't really exist in triathlon because most athletes aren't technically proficient, and there's big gaps between people out of the water. I've done WT races and they are actual racing, because everyone is strong in all 3 disciplines so you generally have large groups on the bike
no doubt, even among road racers, cries are a special. A 1/2 mile course with 4 or 6 turns... must be at the front, and cab corner to an extreme. yea, use the weak guy until he cracks. Dan's a beast.
Professional triathlete? They know how to ride in groups, the train in road bikes and the olympics triathlon you are allowed to draft.. I think he knew he was sandbagging and did the right thing, push everyone. I actually liked how he raced given he is sandbagging. If he is just a random triathlete man, he was pro watts, and still is sandbagging.
Never done a crit but... This gives me confidence that I would be a decent crit racer..my peak is 1600+ and I can sustain around 500w for a few minutes. Thoughts?
Power data is directly from the power meter. Speed data is based on gps which can be spotty. Look at average speed over a long distance and things will even out
Cat 4 power encompasses an extremely wide range because everyone has to move through Cat 4 to move up categories. So you have folks there with Cat 1 or 2 power who just don’t have enough upgrade points yet.
The point of the commentary is that you don't need that kind of power. Obviously, Dan is going jump up the cats quickly, but don't be overawed by anyone else. We get better by doing.
The categories are based on experience, not skill level. You will almost always find very strong riders in Cat 4 while they accumulate points to move up.
His fitness is good but that’s only one part of success, his cornering and especially his strategy needs a ton of work, that’s why he lost. I’ll praise anyone racing their bike in good faith
@@NorCalCycling me too but the fact he smashed them from the start - he knew he was stronger. He lost because he rode like a triathlete. You're right in telling him to learn to race first (has he been watching your channel at all?).
This has honestly made my day, thanks so much guys. I’ll have to send in some more footage of me getting my head kicked in as I moved up categories 😬🤟
Great Effort! 👌🤘
Drafting is allowed, Dan...
(insane power - good work)
Awesome to get your footage on here dan 👏
Wow, nice one Dan getting this here
thanks for sending it in.
Not for nothing, but it looked like he was also handling the corners pretty well for a first time crit dude. Very impressive.
First time crit maybe but not first time on racing a bike. He is a triathlete after all.
It is a valid comment. My experience with triathletes entering crits has been horrible. I stay away from them until they've learned how to corner and race around other people.
Agreed!! He’s gotta work on strategy and then look out bc dan will be racking up the wins
Horrible racing tactics, yet extremely fun watching Dan act like a boss. I would love to see more of Dan using his power profile with some good tactics
I don’t race, just a casual cyclist, but love to watch racing. Really and enjoy and learn from this channel.
370 for 35 mins is nuts.

A great to see some footage of a guy I follow. His bread and butter is the bike the man's a beast on it so not surprised at this at all.
I can average about 12 mph on my trek marlin 4.
Throw some gp5000s on that bad baby lol

I was laughing at the HULK SMASH tactics, and it all worked out! Great job Dan.
I like this race. Kept the pace high, no noodling like usual cat 4 races.
As a triathlete of 8 years, I'm learning to stay in the draft. Also trying to figure out when I should go because I don't have an impressive sprint.
A classic example from Jeff "position beats power". But all in all, what a beast! Congrats mate!
Im looking forward to this man's races
Dan should do cyclocross with those starts 👌
I start that way too, just for fun. Spd pedals 😉👌

Not a good sign when the course has wind turbines near it. Looking at you Patterson Pass.

83kph sprint? is it flat? damn thats amazing
that course looks fun as fuqqqqq
The hell did Dan blast everything solo for though lol. It would work if he at least he had a tt bike and not a regular bike

it looks like Cat1 is racing against cat 4-5 riders..
how is he moving almost 110k bro what
