Little background on the winner Matt Koenig. 1 year ago he weighted 90 lbs more then he did in that race and had not ridden a bike for 8 years. Then in 1 year he wanted to change his life for the better and got way disciplined and lost weight and got FAST on a bike. I trained with him all last summer. He is incredible.
This kind of content (race strategy) is why you have so many followers (not all the bike/wheel margins gain fluf). Thank you for getting back to the roots of this channel! Love it! Would like to see more viewer footage analysis too. Maybe a couch to crit "where is he now" (race footage of course) update from season 1 would also be nice for the long time viewers.
Just picked up a bike a couple of weeks ago. Gonna start riding to hopefully catch one of these this summer. Currently living about 50 miles south of here but looking to move to the valley. Time to ride before tonight’s storm!
I was chatting with my cycling buddies about how racing is dead and fast bunch rides are king. Racing is just sandbaggers sitting on, not wanting to turn, thinking they are Caleb ready to unleash their 900w sprint. Whereas a fast group ride is a bunch of guys who are there to have fun, happy to bury themselves a bit in a rolling pace line and then have a coffee after and shoot the shit. I still think racing is where it's at, but handicap racing is probably the best middle ground, you have small groups chasing each other, rolling turns and working as a team, fun.
“Negative racing”. Road racing is mostly dead in the US…or at least where I am. CX took over and it’s, not for me. In the past group rides served as a place to learn etiquette, dos/dont’s all while not being as serious as a race.
This is not only your observation and not only in the US... See this video from the other side of the globe: th-cam.com/video/0SU62IhjLqM/w-d-xo.html I gave up racing because it got too dangerous, with over-ambitious folks who will kill themselves just to cross the line first.... Cheers1
First off I love these videos. Great quality and commentary. Now for some spirited tactics debate. At ~545 you attack. As a very accomplished sprinter why not sit on and follow any counter? You would crush a field sprint. However, what is your motivation? Hard training, so go on the attack for the workout or are you in it to win it? Id think Mikes Bikes would have a stacked field for these. Do yall stick to solid team tactics or do you guys again consider it a hard training ride and roll mostly solo? Keep up the good work and looking fwd to seeing you get some more wins in 2023!
I mean he literally explained it. Drop the barnacles, drop the people who just rode really hard. Everyone who wants to go with him will have to ride even harder, even briefly, to get back on his wheel. That's an extra match they might not have to spare while Jeff does. Winning sprints is about giving yourself the best odds. If you've got the power that means fatiguing others while you'll still be able to sprint.
@chriswitek9455 Not everyone will have to ride 100%, be in a chase with several others. I guess it comes down to who Jeff thinks he can smoke in a sprint. Make those he cant expend extra watts. I dont know the composition of this race but seems Jeff has one of the best finishes. Again, just tactics discussion, not criticism...more than one way to win a race. I was a sprinter and would much rather anyone work than me....depending on if its a training race for training or a race that has a pay window.
Is talking tactics with competitors (subtly or obviously) part of racing? For example, if you want a couple guys with you on the front to help drop the barnacles, do you ever give a "YUP!" or "Let's go!" so they know what you're doing?
communication is critical especially in a breakaway. In this case I'd let them know that we have some "barnacles" in the back, but sometimes you can't just shake them off easily especially in a draft. In a breakaway, I try to trick others into doing more work by complimenting their pulls. Another example of talking tactics is by guilt tripping people into closing gaps for me (esp if they don't have a teammate up front).
Is there a schedule for these Alviso Crit races that is availible to view online. I'm going to be over from the UK in March and thought I'd go watch one of these races if I had time.
@@NorCalCycling Aw man. I'm there next week, but have meetings all Tuesday :( I'm staying just along the road in Milpitas. Maybe we'll get a long lunch break and I can catch some racing.
In my defense (this is the Terún rider, aka elder Matt) that was a rest week for me I was obviously just chillin! @Jeff where’s the Alviso where I destroyed you & Max?! ❤
How many positions do you think is a good amount to drop back after a pull on the front? I was once in a large second group in a Cat 5 novice race and never went further back than second position, there were a few tight turns that made me want to stay near the front, but what about in a more well rotating group.
I think, maybe 3rd to 5th from the front would be great because you will also get the benefit of drafting. If you're in the back you'll just dont have air if that make sense. Sorry my english
Great video, I really enjoy your tactics videos. But please, keep it real. Alviso is not a real crit and even more, the level is that of P12-racing? C'mon man, that's so over the top that it's getting embarrassing.
Overall yes Alviso is probably Cat 3 level at best - but some Cat 1’s like Jeff and I, along with some really strong cat 2/3’s like Matt who won, Max who was in the break, and Dante as well means it’s a good workout. It’s also only 35 minutes long so there is also that. Reminds me I need to make my “The Truth About Alviso” exposé..
@@nonamecat1 Hi Matt, thanks for your honest reply. Credit to all riders for showing up at Alviso and having a go. It's a fun ride as it is with some good and sometimes some not so good riding (as in every ride and race) and some good riders and some not so good riders. No need to talk it up to the level Jeff did in this video.
hi, jeff! is there another of sharing a race footage other than the google forms? this is my third time submitting and it's also the third time it said that there was an error submitting the forms.
Three sprinters, "chasing" and marking at the end. Why didn't the three/four of you make a deal when the winning break went? ie, everyone work and then see who has the legs in the sprint for the win, not who can sit up first to not get second.. Even just pulling through helps other riders' motivation and keeps the chase moving.
Is a Cervelo Soloist Ultegra Di2 a good enough bike to do races like this? I've been wanting to try a race but not sure if I'll get laughed at when I show up lol
Absolutely a good enough bike to go race on, and bike racers are always a friendly bunch so won't have anybody laughing either so good luck and race hard👍👍
Every time I see footage from there I keep thinking: racing, *real racing* where you have sometimes five bike thicc packs going down a road lane.. and that on a regular basis.. on a public road with normal public road access. I just can't see that happen here. Ofc that's because of luxury mostly, there will always be an option for a safer option in The Netherlands then letting a criterium being ridden mixed with normal traffic. Sorry I know it's totally off topic and not at all relevant to the video, but am I wrong? I see plenty of cars driving around, and haven't seen any times a car even interfered with the race progression so I might be wrong and the traffic is partially closed?
Can't wait to see what kinds of new and exotic Matts show up in 2023.
I am still waiting for banana matt
There's a few in every city apparently 🧐

Love these tactics videos. No desire to ever crit race, but its fun to see how much thought goes into them.
Loved the '80s sports montage music.
4:31 someone's gotta invent a balls-shaped saddle bag for that dangle
I was pleased to feel Lucas Brunelle vibes during the musically accompanied segment towards the end of the video 😉
