I'm surprised at how many people say you know your shit because you can record 4:3 6k 420/10bit LongGOP at 200mbps until the card runs out using the video mode. If you jump down to 4K you can also get a 4:3 422/10 bit longGOP at 150Mbps. All you have to do is go into the anamorphic modes on the gh5 to unlock these features. No photo mode is needed!
That's rad. I haven't tried this yet on my G9. I find myself filming in 16:9 4k with a square grid imposed over my image and even in 16:9 I'm framing my shots in a square
Pretty good idea. I just tried 6k Photo Mode, on my G9. I like it. And I get regular sound through the cameras microphone. A bit of technical info: My 10 minute 6k Photo Mode video is MP4, approx 14gb, in a single 14gb file, not broken into 4gb files. It's h.265, 200mbps. 4:2:0 I used a Sandisk Extreme Pro Sd card, 64gb, UHS-I, V30, 200X.
Yeah the 6K photo mode rocks. My only down side is you can’t use any of the ibis options this camera offers when filming in it. I’m excited for the GH6 I’ll buy soon for those options hopefully🤞
I just checked my G9 for stabilization when shooting 6k Photo Mode. I get Dual IS, lens & sensor stabilization. I get the dual IS symbol on screen, and it works. I don't get E-Stabilization or IS Lock, those are just for regular video. Also, for extracting stills from 6K Photo Mode on my computer, as opposed to doing it in camera, I tried VLC and it works quite well. I get approx 5.5mb jpgs. Panasonic photofunSTUDIO 10 is pretty lousy to use, for anything. And I just started trying 6k Photo Mode today, after stumbling on your video. I also have a GX8, GX7 that I still use a lot, GM1. Good channel you have. Thanks.
so I'm thinking of upgrading to gh6 and sell my gh5... The main feature i need although its cryptic if it has it is to shoot 4k at 4:3 for as long as i want, can it do this?
Hey! I’m pretty positive it does, but I am not 100% sure. I think it can record as long as possible in 4:3 mode in 4K, I know in 5.8k it has unlimited record limits. And I don’t believe there is any record limits on any settings for the camera
Wish I could! But I do not own that camera, I would suggest getting the camera cage for that camera, nato top handle, and v mount battery system would be by number one things to get
@@MatthewDangyou got the Atomos Ninja v plus so bore SSD recording life. Got some apurture lights and overhead led diffuser with the app. So trying to get everything working together in my studio. Dang that sounds super amazing! Yeah the GH6 just seems like a beast and if you rarely use autofocus like how I mainly use cine lens anyways this camera seems like the perfect on the line camera of a cinema camera
cn u choose 30fps 4:3 Aspect Ratio for the 4k option on gh5, or is 4k only allow 16:9? wod be cool 4k cos 6k will over heat the camera if left recording my gig for hours
@@RetroBusker there is a way to de-squeeze the image, but use the 6k/4k Photo mode to easily access the 4:3 video mode with the S/S feature. Here is a video explaining it th-cam.com/video/pKDuzAB6C3k/w-d-xo.html
honestly I have been shooting the majority of my content with the mindset of multiple platform use. Plus If you notice at the end of my videos I am using the open gate and have more head room instead of being awkwardly cropped in. Plus being able to slightly reframe is also another huge benefit as well if you want to give or take a little headroom. When I film though I always have a 16x9 frame marker or a 9x16 frame market on too
Thanks but the term open gate has nothing to do with 4:3 or any aspect ratio. In digital terms, it refers to the fact that it's using the entire sensor. So open gate recording on the S5II is shot in 3:2
True but this video came out before the S5ii was released and secondly refers to MFT cameras that full open gate recording sensors are actually 4:3 instead of 3:2. But if you check out my most recent video S5iiX VS G9ii I do mention open gate and show off the comparisons
Question: I’d like to use the GH5’s anamorphic mode with a non-anamorphic lens to capture the full 4:3 frame and still capture sound - are there drawbacks to this method? For example, does it interfere with internal stabilization or involve post-processing to “unstretch” the anamorphic wide frame? Thanks!
When you put it into "Anamorphic(4:3)" the internal stabilization is automatically set to "A2.0" (which is only for actual anamorphic lenses). That can lead to very wonky images (happened to me before I realised what the problem was). You have to turn it off every time in the stabilization settings, which is a bit annoying. But otherwise it should work fine with a normal lens.
@@MatthewDangyou I used the same settings as you have. I noticed when I playback the video on the camera there is no sound but when I played the video on my computer there is a sound.
Did you check the sound output on your camera, and make sure you were not in silent mode on your camera. I often turn on silent mode when I don’t want to have other people hear my camera beep
@@Raoh1st just down size you are getting more quality into the camera. Or send a 4K vertical file and every social media channel will compress it either way. I edit my social videos in 1080 either way so it doesn’t compress it to much but film everything in 4K
I saw a video on this and tried it and did not like the loss of width for 16x9 It is good for certain situations but definitely not for everything. I used the Anamorphic mode on the S5
Yeah it works when you specifically want to create for horizontal and vertical, but I am surprised you lost a lot of width on it🤔 this entire video was shot using the 4x3 aspect ratio
To be fair and let’s be honest, this is TH-cam. You can just shoot a little wider in 4K and crop both your main composure and you vertical rubbish. Having said that, I am hooked on 6k open gate because the massive resolution is just cream! I think I’m going to start shooting 4x3 on the GH5s now too which is not even 4K but something 4K into 4x3 resolution.
I’ve been making micro 4/3 content for way longer than he has sooooo not really. Specifically watch my shooting 5.8k on the Panasonic GH6 that I made months before him talking about open gate too. Just because a big creator post a video doesn’t mean small creators copy him.
