The interesting thing here is you are ignoring that aspect ratio is a style/character/emotion for anything you film. Something that is intended for 16:9 will not have the emotion in 9:16. Even if you shoot it in 4:3, it will have the emotion for 4:3 and won’t translate to 16:9 and 9:16. Its not possible to set design, act the same, move the same, etc in 16:9 and 9:16. Here is where I challenge the entire thing: Created content for TH-cam should different, completely, than content for TikTok, Stories, Reels, etc. They have different audiences with different retention, expectation, and frankly their purpose for watching. Make videos specifically for your audience on each platform. There is no one size fits all. If there was, there would be no other platforms. And believe me, I struggle with this a ton. I’d love a much larger audience and I try putting videos everywhere but in the end, I focus my video efforts for TH-cam because the audience has a longer expiration date. Anything “shorts” or anything intended to be viewed on a phone by scrolling will never retain an audience. You’re only as good as your frequency and quality of uploads. TH-cam has similar issues but a TH-cam viewer is more forgiving by the nature of how the platform works. Fastest way to get burned out is to try to accommodate every platform. 3-5X the work. All of this is just my opinion.

Vertical Video is pointless, does it really hurt people to simply twist their phone 90 degrees to enjoy video as it has always been? Vertical Video is simply a byproduct of laziness and the uninformed rather than something that could have been simply been solved by phone manufactures in software or hardware.
This is a really smart hack, and it reminds me of the beginnings of film before the 16:9 days which is wildly fascinating to me. My question, however, is: How do we stop bowing down and catering to the vertical video demands? I get that it’s everywhere right now, but does that mean it has to continue that way? How do we as creatives stand up for quality and overall visual experiences rather than quickly consumed, easily forgotten content?
@@maximumfunk5484 I don’t necessarily have any beef with social media, but rather the cheapening of our craft. Shouldn’t there be some consideration from these platform decision makers for quality? Or shouldn’t there be a voice from the community advocating for the art form?
I’ve thought for a long time that most camera sensors should be square or round to maximize the information coming from the lens. Especially these days where most content i shoot is 50% for horizontal screens and 50% for vertical. Would save so much time shooting things twice
Yea they can just overlay the horizontal and vertical cropped boxes over the screen so you can frame them both properly. There's really no reason to rotate your camera 90 degrees to shoot vertical, it should just be a flip of a switch. Pro body cameras and vertical grips do not need to exist!
@@DerekSteen actually, there is a reason, no company is doing a 1:1 sensor, so we first need it to be made so we can use on your devices. There is only a couple companies that produces sensors and all the other buys from them, one of the biggest is Sony, which they use in smartphones, cameras, mirrorless, etc...
Bro I figured out a little hack around this when I was figuring out how I could record car exits to make compilation videos at some point but be able to use them for shorts. I know cropping makes the res worse, but I would just start recording cars exiting from car shows horizontally with a grid/keep subject(car) in the middle vertical frame of the wide video. So then I would just simply hit post a short, hit any horizontal video and adjust the frame. I still do this to this day and I’m only using an iPhone 11 that’s it no pro camera! 🤙🏽
this is also the major benefit of cameras that are shooting 6k and 8k. I dont even mind it on 4k cameras - but almost all of my shoots need vertical spec so I just shoot extra wide (even wider than the 16:9 frame I need) and I crop both vertical and horizontal out of it. Social doesn't anything more than HD and even a marginally cropped 4K image looks indiscernible from full res when upscaled. what every camera actually needs though is 9:16 vertical crop markers. currently only the Ninja V gives you this frame guide.
Hi Patrick, GH6 has 9:16 frame Guide or If I remember correctly Video Assist as well and Portakeys PT5 cheapest External Monitor as well...they can reframe how you want it.
@@impatrickt yeah me neither...went to S5+ BM video assist...probably A7iv would have been better but I am happy with S5. And the price was half of A7iv and no waiting time at least here in Switzerland...
I just opted to shoot most things in cellphone format at this point for this channel. Only my live streams will new horizontal. I'm watching you on a phone RN.
I've got the zv e10 for social media and as my b cam. And the awesome part about it is that it registers as a vertical video when rotating it, so it still pertains the 3840 x 2160. And it's less than $1000 :)
Shooting in 4k traditionally allows for more than enough vertical resolution for any mobile 9X16 content even with cropping. You just have to account for proper framing WHILE you shoot. Its not really complicated.
exactly what i was thinking the whole time.....just frame your shots correctly, you know what you're going to do with them in post so this 4:3 nonsense is rather redundant lol. you could just block the left and right of your LCD in 16x9 and magically you have a 4:3 frame. its kinda silly
Didn't know Panasonic could do that! I usually just tend to shoot a little wider so I can repurpose but that messes up with lens choice and composition 😩. Also great to meet you at Matti's meet up!
So now were going back to original 1960's TV crop, I wonder when they built the Cathode Ray Tube, who thought,"You know what, let's do a 4 by 3 aspect ratio for TV, it will be perfect for social media in the 20's"
@@BartoszRybotycki I can't on my G9, I think Panasonic should unlock it for all cameras with a firmware update. Even if it's only in lower frame rates or resolutions. IDK what the limitations are, but being able to use the whole sensor should be a thing now that we're in the vertical video timeline.
As a former reporter for a leading TV network that strictly implemented 4:3-safe 16:9 until 2023, I'm glad I'm keeping my personal 8K vlogs 4:3-safe 16:9 unlike 99% of content creators! It leaves enough freedom for me to centre-cut it to 4:3 for NTSC analogue SD or 1:1 square video which doesn't look too out of place in a vertical video platform like TikTok! 4:3 is back, indeed.
Just take any modern 8k SLR and leave some room in the frame to crop easily.. Nikon Z9 will get you covered. And much better AF performance by the way 😉
This is a great tip. I heard about other people doing this but nobody else said where the setting is in the menus. It never crossed my mind to use anamorphic mode.
The 6k open gate mode (3:2 aspect ratio) uses the whole sensor area, whilst the 4:3 mode mentioned in this video crops into aps-c which sort of defeats the point of having a full frame camera, unless you're using super 35 lenses
Open Gate - sometimes implemented as "6K photo mode" on Lumix cameras like my G9. It has it's drawbacks but it's 18MP per frame 4:3 or 3:2 (uhd IS 8mp). Photo Joseph did a great job covering this a while ago. Welcome to the club.
1:46 You have the graphics labeled wrong. 3840 is the horizontal resolution. The larger resolution is in the direction of the longer axis (x axis, or horizontal), whether in 4:3 or 16:9. The longer horizontal direction is listed first (the 4 and 16), and the shorter vertical direction is listed 2nd (the 3 and the 9). So 3830x2160 is 4k resolution which means you have 3840 horizontal pixels and 2160 vertical pixels. And 3328x2496 means you have 3328 horizontal pixels and 2496 vertical pixels, so yes you get more vertical pixels in 4:3.
I think you are right on point. Most here dislike when a device shoots video only in a cropped mode. They want to use the full sensor width. But oddly, with the exception of a few Panasonic cameras and the new Fujifilm X-H2S, virtually all currently available mirrorless bodies crop the sensor vertically to about 1.21:1 when shooting video. I find this very annoying… not only for social media, but for reframing and for anamorphic shooting. I fail to understand why anyone would support being forced to shoot video in a crop of the sensor?
Please open gate recording for every camera. I just don't get it. On my stupid DJI action cam I can shoot in 4:3 DCI 4K but on the drones and "professional" full frame camers I can't.
how I think about it is, shoot 16:9, because it is still standard video format . if you shoot vertical you can't go back to 16:9 when I client needs it. so shoot 16:9 and crop if you need to for social media.
I might be the only person who’s said this, but why does it have to be vertical? Im Fine watching a video in 16:9 aspect ratio in vertical mode. Vertical mode is for lazy people that don’t wanna rotate the phone. I don’t get it. I need to send a big imagine.
Since I started shooting with the GH6 open frame... I've realized how much better a lot of what I record actually looks in 4:3. For talking heads, the original TV ratio is perfect.
Vertical videos should be forbidden by law, and platforms that support them annihilated from existance. Period. And if you insist on having vertical video along with proper one, this what you suggest is the same as simply zooming out or using wider lens.
>5k or higher with 60% fill of frame in 16:9 -and you have headroom with post & Quality, Don't fill the frame! 4:3 is awsome on all Lumix cameras as its open gate in 5-6k with full sensor, 4K has a tiny crop. 4:3 adds headroom on 16:9 and 9:16.
Instagram, TicTok are trash factories. Just shoot for TH-cam guys. It's the best presentation of your efforts anyway. TH-cam has entire Led Zeppelin concerts live for free. TH-cam brings value and depth. You can't beat that.
Vertical video grew out of the ignorance of phone users who didn't know enough to turn their phone before hitting record. It's a crime against humanity.
Yes all you need to do is hack your Sony camera and it will work, eventually. It might take a few years since reverse engineering and having a camera isn't an easy thing to do
Yes you get a substantial aps-c / super 35 crop in this mode. It only makes sense to use this mode is you're specifically using aps-c lenses. I'm not entirely sure, but if using full frame lenses you might be better off simply shooting in full frame 16:9 and cropping in post as it should give you a larger sensor area even in the vertical axis. Or if you're shooting on an S1 or S1H then just shoot 6k full frame open gate 3:2 which uses the entire sensor area without any cropping
You have misunderstood the 4:3 aspect ratio, or actually confused resolution with aspect ratio or field of view. Lumix uses the entire sensor in 4:3 aspect ratio so you don’t lose anything in regards to the field of view. The horizontal resolution is lower but the field of view isn’t
This problem was solved around 9 years ago with the magic lantern hack on Canon DSLRs, and in 2017 with the Panasonic GH5 and in 2019 with the Panasonic S1H etc. All of them can have been able to shoot open gate for years now
Ok… you just spoke to me lol. I only shoot with Panasonic and I’ve been struggling with this challenge and you just solved this for me hahahaha!!! Thank you, brother!
You can if you develop a hack for it. Do you have programming skills to do this? If not you can hire computer programmers, it might take a few years and quite a bit of money but it might be worth it
Dude…this…was exactly what I needed to see today. Just started more consistent content creation at my work, we have been double shooting, one take vertical, one horizontal, WITH THE GH6!!!!! I’m really starting to like my phone tracking my every move when it recommends me content that I absolutely needed to hear, holy heck. Thank you for this absolute game changer. Liked. Subbed. Booyah baby
The Lumix S1 and S1H has been doing this for a few years already, and before that around 9 years ago Canon DSLRs were doing this with the Magic Lantern hack. This is nothing new and definitely not a game changer. Even your GH5 from 2017 has this very same 4:3 mode
I thought it's a regular thing to know that you should shoot in 4:3 and then crop it to your liking. Even without Vertical videos, 4:3 gives you much more room to capture in frame.
Great tip and video. I'm playing the social media game but feel that the cinematic quality of video and stills is lost in the vertical format. BTW loved Lizzy when she told you your camera was too small, my wife even laughed and then asked me if I needed to go to B&H.

Hello Directorzon. I agree with you. I really hate the vertical format too! I only use it in some situations for photos but never for a video. I wish it could disappear!!! Sadly mostly everyone use it 😑😑😑
glad you found Lumix, I've used many brands and models (A7SIII, R6, etc.) but Lumix cameras have showed me what a true filmmakers or content creators camera should be, love my GH6 its a true BEAST!
wow
That’s actually awesome!
One of the most helpful vids I’ve seen in a long time - thanks!
Vertical Video is pointless, does it really hurt people to simply twist their phone 90 degrees to enjoy video as it has always been? Vertical Video is simply a byproduct of laziness and the uninformed rather than something that could have been simply been solved by phone manufactures in software or hardware.
ya i hate vertical videos.I watch a lot of youtube from my TV and I now skip all the vertical creators.
Your comment is hilarious
I will make sure to point that out to the next client who suddenly realizes they want vertical shorts 🙄
1:35 Does this apply to Sony Alpha cameras too?
Thanks for giving me a reason to use my monitors resolution without cropping 👍
Not sure if anyone else saw the subtle message his editor put in there. “We” lol. The simple things in life I tell you. Love to see it
It’s true.
This is a really smart hack, and it reminds me of the beginnings of film before the 16:9 days which is wildly fascinating to me.
My question, however, is: How do we stop bowing down and catering to the vertical video demands? I get that it’s everywhere right now, but does that mean it has to continue that way? How do we as creatives stand up for quality and overall visual experiences rather than quickly consumed, easily forgotten content?
you dont.
@@maximumfunk5484 Why not?
@@traviskeas9614 because its here to stay weather YOU like it or not.
@@traviskeas9614 social media is all about retention of attention. The platforms don't care about quality, they care about content that sucks time.
Pro body cameras and vertical grips do not need to exist!
my dream camera would be a 1:1 sensor
I've thought the same thing. Especially in phones. No reason why we can't have a square sensor and hold the phone vertically to record 16:9.
I totally agree! I have turned a few videos into shorts but these have had to be on a 1:1 ratio because I was soo close but its not ideal
Does Blackmagic offer any modes like this? Or only Lumix?
this is also the major benefit of cameras that are shooting 6k and 8k.
@@filipmichalsaffray441 yeah i wasn’t a fan of the GH6 overall though.
ZV E10 is a wonderful piece of kit. Wish I could afford one.
I just got a lumix s5 a few months ago and had no idea what animorphic was for. Thank you very much!
Shooting in 4k traditionally allows for more than enough vertical resolution for any mobile 9X16 content even with cropping. You just have to account for proper framing WHILE you shoot. Its not really complicated.
true that :P
exactly what i was thinking the whole time.....just frame your shots correctly, you know what you're going to do with them in post so this 4:3 nonsense is rather redundant lol. you could just block the left and right of your LCD in 16x9 and magically you have a 4:3 frame. its kinda silly
I disagree. Shooting open gate is easier and as chris said he wants to be on ALL platforms. For this 4.3 is best
Didn't know Panasonic could do that! I usually just tend to shoot a little wider so I can repurpose but that messes up with lens choice and composition 😩.
Also great to meet you at Matti's meet up!
you would still need to shoot wider anyway because otherwise you lose out on the 16:9 version of the clip. It's just easier to visualize in camera
@@andy_olive I see. Thanks for the extra info!
I have also racked my brain the last few weeks, and have come to the same solution. Now I bought an old Lumix GH5 and it's so easy.
So now were going back to original 1960's TV crop, I wonder when they built the Cathode Ray Tube, who thought,"You know what, let's do a 4 by 3 aspect ratio for TV, it will be perfect for social media in the 20's"
Nice! And we'll call it anamorphic mode to make it sound cinematic and make TH-camrs excited
Amazing hack! Definitely gonna start using 4:3, that genius thanks Chris!
Best of both worlds right there 👌🏼 great tip Chris!
Chris, if you're shooting video with Lumix cameras, use Opengate.
u cant on s5...as i know
@@BartoszRybotycki I can't on my G9, I think Panasonic should unlock it for all cameras with a firmware update.
4:3 is back, indeed.
thanks, as an editor i appreciate this change
Thank you.... my brain is going nuts after realizing how dam smart this is
For the past 3 years, I've told all my clients to take photos and shoot video in 1:1 square or portrait for social,. It fills the phone screen better.
Just take any modern 8k SLR and leave some room in the frame to crop easily.. Nikon Z9 will get you covered. And much better AF performance by the way 😉
Exactly!
This is a great tip. I heard about other people doing this but nobody else said where the setting is in the menus. It never crossed my mind to use anamorphic mode.
This is so helpful! as always Chris is on top of his craft!💙 brilliant!
The GH6 is great for this - plus you can use the 10-25 f1.7 a full frame equivalent of 20 - 50 f3.5. This is exactly the zoom range I need for my work
I shot in 4:3 on the GoPro paddleboarding last night for this exact reason. There's gunna be people that disagree, but I here ya 🤙
I can't switch camera systems since I'm stuck on sony. Maybe just wider angle? Since its 4k, we can just crop in.
Personally I don’t like the vertical content. But I’m old and figure I can just rotate my phone.
I actually just love the 4:3 aspect. With a nice muted profile it gives you a great look
That's actually ... awesome! One more reason making me consider getting the S5 for myself
This is brilliannnnnttttt!!! Thank you Chris!
Holy cow. I'm blown away. Thank you sir
Great advice man you're saving everyone tons of time!!!
Also, Lumix S1 owner here, you can shoot 6k opengate on the S1.
The 6k open gate mode (3:2 aspect ratio) uses the whole sensor area, whilst the 4:3 mode mentioned in this video crops into aps-c which sort of defeats the point of having a full frame camera, unless you're using super 35 lenses
One of the greatest tips of all time
Open Gate - sometimes implemented as "6K photo mode" on Lumix cameras like my G9.
Bro this video is so helpful! Thanks 🙌🏼
Yes! 4:3 is back, baby!
Please open gate recording for every camera. I just don't get it. On my stupid DJI action cam I can shoot in 4:3 DCI 4K but on the drones and "professional" full frame camers I can't.
Before you spoke about using 4:3 ratio, I was thinking, "why not use a different aspect ratio like maybe 4:3?"
okay this is absolutely brilliant, thank you for this 🙌🏻
I never thought of thiss....... ahhhh... I can't wait to try this out! good call team
how I think about it is, shoot 16:9, because it is still standard video format . if you shoot vertical you can't go back to 16:9 when I client needs it. so shoot 16:9 and crop if you need to for social media.
Exactly :) and for example, beautiful landscape videos in vertical are such a non-sense.
Or crop the 4.3 to 16.9… 4.3 is more flexible and more in demand than 16.9 this was the point of the video.
I might be the only person who’s said this, but why does it have to be vertical? Im
Fine watching a video in 16:9 aspect ratio in vertical mode.
Why didn’t you release this video in 4:3?
How many people are on ipads?
Great video!
Is this edited by your new editor?
Vertical videos should be forbidden by law, and platforms that support them annihilated from existance. Period. And if you insist on having vertical video along with proper one, this what you suggest is the same as simply zooming out or using wider lens.
>5k or higher with 60% fill of frame in 16:9 -and you have headroom with post & Quality,
Don't fill the frame!
4:3 is awsome on all Lumix cameras as its open gate in 5-6k with full sensor,
4K has a tiny crop. 4:3 adds headroom on 16:9 and 9:16.
Ive been doing this for a bit, love the s5 anamorphic mode! Wondered how long it would be until a youtuber would figure it out
Great tip! I have a Lumix S5 and will definitely try this out!
Does this work for the sony cameras?
Yes all you need to do is hack your Sony camera and it will work, eventually. It might take a few years since reverse engineering and having a camera isn't an easy thing to do
whats even better, when you're shooting open gate on gh6, you can have custom frame marker for vertical and horizontal video framing.
Struggle with people seeing my content on platforms like Instagram and I’m not setup for TH-cam
Why not film in a Full Frame mode? With 4:3 you get a crop on the image. Or am I missing something?
Yes you get a substantial aps-c / super 35 crop in this mode. It only makes sense to use this mode is you're specifically using aps-c lenses.
I'm not entirely sure, but if using full frame lenses you might be better off simply shooting in full frame 16:9 and cropping in post as it should give you a larger sensor area even in the vertical axis. Or if you're shooting on an S1 or S1H then just shoot 6k full frame open gate 3:2 which uses the entire sensor area without any cropping
@@WonderBoggle That's what I was thinking. With full frame you also get 17:9 ratio.
Great insight, brother. I'm gonna have to give this a try. 🔥
Dude. I think about this problem all the time. Thanks for sharing.
This problem was solved around 9 years ago with the magic lantern hack on Canon DSLRs, and in 2017 with the Panasonic GH5 and in 2019 with the Panasonic S1H etc. All of them can have been able to shoot open gate for years now
great video bro. came at the perfect time. thank you
Hey I saw that skit on IG! I didn’t realize it was you!
Biggest reason I want to upgrade from an X-T3 is the open gate ability of the X-H2s.
Ok… you just spoke to me lol. I only shoot with Panasonic and I’ve been struggling with this challenge and you just solved this for me hahahaha!!! Thank you, brother!
I needed this. Thank you !
Why is this video not in 4:3?
Can you shoot 4x3 on Sony a7siii ?can you do the same anamorphic on the Sony?
You can if you develop a hack for it. Do you have programming skills to do this? If not you can hire computer programmers, it might take a few years and quite a bit of money but it might be worth it
Isn’t 4:3 imax format? :o
What a useful tip bro...thanks a lot!
Liked. Subbed. Booyah baby
That is a game changer. I have to shoot this week. I need to shoot Anamorphic
This is a game changer thank u Chris
It gets even better with the S5II and 6K open gate 3:2!
This is a game changer! I still shoot on the Gh5, but might have to get my hands on one of these cameras.
You have open gate 4/3 almost 6K shooting anamorfic open gate on GH5 just it is 10bit420 H265...
The Lumix S1 and S1H has been doing this for a few years already, and before that around 9 years ago Canon DSLRs were doing this with the Magic Lantern hack. This is nothing new and definitely not a game changer. Even your GH5 from 2017 has this very same 4:3 mode
Great tips! Simple and efficient 😉
I thought it's a regular thing to know that you should shoot in 4:3 and then crop it to your liking. Even without Vertical videos, 4:3 gives you much more room to capture in frame.
ahh this has been such a pain point for me! THANK YOU!
This will def inform how camera makers create sensors too. This is def a thing I ma looking for in my next camera. Reframing 16:9 sucks!
Great tip and video. I'm playing the social media game but feel that the cinematic quality of video and stills is lost in the vertical format. BTW loved Lizzy when she told you your camera was too small, my wife even laughed and then asked me if I needed to go to B&H.
