    What do you think; are you intrigued to start shooting in Open Gate? With the GH6 firmware 2.0 released on July 5 2022, you can even do 4:3 5.8K RAW with the Ninja V+!

      Great video, as always! One correction: GH5 II shot anamorphic 6k, not 5k.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, sort of. I don't recall what I said in the video but here are the two cameras - the GH6 shoots 5760x4320 in what's called "5.8K" mode, which is an accurate name when looking at the source width (5760 = 5.8K). The GH5II shoots 4992x3744 in "6K-A" mode. I don't recall now if the "6K" is a diagonal measurement (probably, since the diagonal is 6240) or if it's a measurement of what it'll be once it's stretched (even a 1.33x anamorphic stretch will result in over 6,600 pixels wide), so that name is more a marketing term. Since the mode is no longer meant to be used only for anamorphic, the name changed to reflect a more realistic use (and what we're used to seeing… "4K" = 4096 wide, not diagonal) pulse.ly/usz7chbns3

    This video is an excellent demonstration of a seriously underrated feature. Honestly Panasonic should be shouting this from the rooftops - especially since shooting dual aspect is such a big deal now. You could shoot an entire feature like a documentary and distribute it as dual aspect.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I don't agree I think the fact that it's only available at 30p makes it a real weak point... Make it 100p (no crop, but lower resolution) and you'll have a winner.

      Just finished the video. That smart reframe is amazing. I still prefer horizontal video but between resolve and the open gate sensor that would take a lot of the pain points out of shooting for different aspect ratios. Do you ever find yourself having a tendency to shoot tighter than you need to just out of habit? You probably have better instincts for shooting/cropping with your photography background.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey buddy! Thanks for watching! The open gate and smart reframe certainly does make things easier. You still want to shoot with the final aspect ratios in mind for sure. As to your question; I do my final framing in camera. It’s really rare that I tighten up a shot in post, and even more rare that I wish I’d shot wider. But yeah, I’ve been looking through a lens for 40 years, so that probably has something to do with it!

    Same for the Panasonic LX100 I used to have. Had a dedicated switch on the lens to switch between aspect ratio's on the fly. This also supported 4:3 and worked great! The greatest feature is Aspect Bracketing where you can take a single picture and it takes 4 different pictures with all 4 aspect ratios in the camera (3:2, 16:9, 4:3, 1:1).

  • @TerenceKearns

    Dude, this is the reason I bought TWO G9s. Their "6K mode" is open gate 4992x3744 (same as GH5). It's fixed at 30fps 4:2:0 10bit 150Mbps HEVC. You have to configure the "6K photo mode" to start-stop record to make it work as a video mode (don't have the dial turned to video mode or it will do regular 16:9). There is a 10minute limit to record time. You get audio as well. Not bad for a camera with a street value of less than $1K. The G9 seems to be the 13th floor of hybrid cameras - how did this not get a mention? Thats why i still call it the most underrated budget semi-pro camera there is even though it's getting a bit long in the tooth now. Not bad for a 2018 stills camera. The only thing I personally feel lacking is a higher bitrate and built in log which feels expensive to me as I have to buy it as an addon even though it's not the full thing. I wish Panasonic would just give it away. Maybe you could have a word to them since G9 is probably EoL soon.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're not wrong - I chose to include just the dedicated Anamorphic modes that don't have any of the 6K Photo limitations, but you absolutely can get the most of it from that mode. Yeah the G9 is a great price point for doing this!

    4 by 3 is what the old TV system was. Mobile phones can be rotated 90' resulting in a much nicer longer width and lower height frame. 16 by 9 corresponds to the Golden Ratio. 3 by 2 is a commonly used ratio.

I plan to use open gate acquisition quite extensively because of the flexibility it allows me in making HD deliverables while maintaining a master that can be repurposed and future proofed to create up to a 5K deliverable to streaming services. Suddenly got excited again over my old Panasonic LX100. A camera from 2014 with a 4/3 sensor that shoots 4K that would let you select sensor crops on the ring. 3:2, 16:9, 1:1 and 4:3. But can only force a reframed 16:9 video out of it.
    What you really need is a custom aspect ration grid you can apply to the reference monitor/viewfinder at all your aspect ratios. That's the killer feature to make best use of this crop. Been using it on full TV shoots for a few years and never looked back.

If I shoot open gate in 4k and crop in post am I losing quality as opposed to just shooting in 4k with the regular 16:9 aspect ratio? Does Panasonic do any enhancing when cropping in 16:9 that is missed when going open gate? Or am I just doing in post what the GH5m2 does for me when selecting a 16:9 aspect ratio. Thanks!

    Amazing feature and a very informative and excellently made video (my only regret is that I didn't see your video sooner). I have both GH6 and GH5II. I see you use a Desview R6 monitor, but you only touched that briefly. I can't find from their products if any of their models will show the 4:3 aspect ratio, or just the 16:9 crop. I'm looking for a monitor that will show the full frame of the open gate 4:3. Any thoughts/brands/experiences?

      Like I discussed in here, 3:2 is better than 16:9 but the 4:3 aspect ratio (closer to square) is better. More vertical overlap. In a perfect world the sensor would be 1:1 square, like a Hasselblad!

    Perhaps an additional update? The OG S5 (yes not the S5 II/IIX) has "open gate" video recording at 30P as well, but is hidden in the menu. Change camera mode to "M", change selected burst mode (I use II) to use 6K Photo, change mode to S/S (shutter start/stop). Limited to 15 minutes per recording, but you can select 3:2 (5183x3456) and 4:3 (4992x3744) aspect ratios and even set Photo Style to V-Log. Includes audio! My understanding is that is also 200Mbps bit rate recording. I've used it successfully for far better Anamorphic than the official "Anamorphic 4:3" mode on the OG S5. If you could, suggest that now the S5 II/IIX have received firmware upgrades that Panasonic move that 6K mode to the video menu on the OG S5 as a friendly gesture.

    Would you mind explaining the pros and cons of proxy vs optimized media?

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure thing. Proxy is smaller (usually half size, so quarter the likes), and compressed. It’s meant to be small, easy to share via cloud, easy to fit on a laptop. Usually H264 or H265/HEVC Optimized is the opposite. Typically rendering to ProRes, full resolution. These files are much bigger than the source, BUT are easy for your computer to handle. Computers can work lay back ProRes more easily than bug H264 files that come off most cameras.

  • @DavidPalmer_blinder
    @DavidPalmer_blinder 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    so quick question, on the S5, which has that anamorphic mode, is that not the same thing? I don't think that's technically "open gate" but it is a 4:3 aspect ratio, but i don't know if it maps to what the GH6/S1H is doing.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Same idea, but note that the resolution is lower. It's a 4:3 ratio, but it's only 3328x2496. It's called 4K-A because once it's stretched out for anamorphic delivery, it'll be wider than 4K. Depending on your stretch, if it's 1.33x that's 1.33x3328 = 4426. And if you use a 2x squeeze anamorphic, that's 6656 wide. But if you're not stretching (i.e. using it as this video is suggesting), then you only have 3.3k width at 3328, so under the 3840 of UHD. That's why the only cameras and modes I am showing as "open gate" for the purpose of dual format delivery are the ones that shoot over 4K natively.

    Hi 😊 Thank you for this amazing video. Question: Do open gate files take up more data than 16:9 and if so do you have an estimated percentage of how much larger they might be? Open gate for non-anamorphic lens projects seems like a good option to allow for reframing up and down in post while maintaining 16:9. This could be especially valuable for gimbal shots if the camera unintentionally drifts too high or low for a take and a reframing adjustment is needed in post. Thank you sir. 👍

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      File size is determined by data rate, not pixel dimensions. 200mbit is 200mbit regardless if it’s 1080p, 4K or 6K. You can convert mbit per second (megabit per second) also written as mbps into megaBYTE per second, then x60 to get a per-minute estimate. Don’t forget to include audio but that’s minimal compared to video.

    • @cobymarcum1442
      @cobymarcum1442 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@photojoseph Thank you for the reply. 😊 I didn’t know if 16:9 saved data by not recording the tops and bottoms of the sensor as opposed to open gate, but you have a good point in using the bit rate to look at file sizes. A person can look at the bit rate for each record setting (if they own a GH6) and make a storage decision from that perspective. For those of us who are considering a GH6 but don’t have one in our hands I suppose I was looking at it more from that perspective. Perhaps I can check the owners manual for the bit rates of 16:9 at 4K 4:2:2 10 bit and compare that bit rate to open gate at the same or closest similar resolution and calculate a percentage in file size difference from there. With a percentage difference in file size I can calculate a storage cost for shooting and storing open gate footage as opposed to 16:9 capture to assess if any difference in cost is a value proposition for my purposes. With the cost of high speed media for the GH6 it would be nice to be able to estimate the cost of data storage ownership before going down the GH6 path or going down the open gate path as opposed to 16:9. I don’t shoot for social media, only my own narrative work so open gate would just be a framing bonus (or safety) for me. Thank you for your insightful video and for your bitrate suggestion as a metric for choosing open gate or 16:9. All the best to you sir. 👍😊
