  • New cameras recently were set up in locations the city promised would be free from what many are calling a tax on the poor - nyc’s congestion pricing scheme to ticket drivers daily for entering manhattan. The new cameras apparently wont be used to charge tolls… for now.

When you see MTA workers, working in the subways, they are either not doing anything at all, or you have like 5-8 guys standing around watching one guy work. It never fails. The MTA knows how to waste money and overpay for renovations and or construction projects and take longer to complete it. Wages aren't going up, food costs more, rent costs way more, metrocards only go up despite no change to the subway quality, now they're charging you to drive. We always joked about reaching the point of being taxed to breathe but at this point it almost feels like a reality with how much more we keep getting nickel and dime'd. It's quickly become unsustainable for anyone making a median salary to even exist here.
One of my professors in college told everyone in his class they should move to Jersey and commute via used car to a job in Manhattan to save the most money possible in their 20's. Now you're losing an extra 3-4k a year from these tolls if you do this. It's always take from the bottom, and not the top.

As a NYC resident, I think the congestion pricing is a horrible idea and unfair to city workers. Them trying to deter driving and encourage using public transportation at a time when the subways are at the most dangerous as they have been in decades is ridiculous. Pollution concerns are a nice cover up for the city just trying to make more money. There are enough cameras for everything else that they generate enough revenue. They just need to disperse and appropriate funds in a more logical way. It is expensive enough to live in the city now; we don't need to dish out more money bc the city cannot manage what we already pay in a way that is beneficial to residents.

This is exactly the kind of thing that made people snap and say they have had enough long ago. If the modern world did not make it impossible to unite and overthrow corrupt governments I believe it would happen a lot. This makes me sick and I don’t even live or work in NY. I’m angry for those people, we are the same. Every year the government makes it harder and harder to just live (if your not rich) by doing things like this. My hope is one day someone is able to get everyone on the same frequency and realize that we actually have more power than the government could ever imagine. The reason we cannot use it is they purposely keep us cutting each others throats for a little more, a little more to survive easier. Imagine if for example just a fraction of us refused to buy gas for a couple days? The impact would be stunning. We cannot however because they make it so if we did that we would not be able to get to work, and make money to live. There is a reason it’s so difficult, it is built in the system and I’m so sick of it. Someone with charisma needs to galvanize the people and start putting a stop to idiots constructing tolls because they want to put fuel in their plane.

I don't think that cargo trucks / emergency vehicles should be tolled, but instead all the tolling should be done on people who just commute in and out of the city by car. NYC has one of the most expansive light rail / subway systems in all of North America. That's something that should be taken advantage of. As a NYC Parks Arborist who works across all boroughs, this is going to make all city services worse. There is a small army of people working behind the scenes to keep every square foot of sidewalk, road and park going. From the plumbing system that brings you fresh water to the gas and electric lines: there are hundreds of people working on every corner of NYC each year.
Those people cannot bring large tools or heavy equipment on a subway. If I brought my 35ft extendable pole saw on the subway, someone would call the cops.
There is already a shortage of trades workers and civil servants in NYC. I’m lucky to work for a subcontractor and have a boss who treats me with dignity and respect, but the direct city jobs are already paying poverty wages for central borough living. What folks in midtown don’t realize is that without the people paid to make there city run coming to midtown, that city is straight up going to fall apart.
I’ve already told my boss I can’t work Manhattan jobs as tolls are already too high for me to make a decent wage if I’m paying 10-16$ in bridge fees, then another 15$ in congestion pricing and about a 1/5 chance I’ll get a parking ticket due the city not issuing parking permits to regular city workers.
For context, if I’m doing site inspections for planting I’m visiting 40-80 sites in a day. If I had to take 20 minutes to look for legal parking, I couldn’t get half that done. It’s 120-180$ for a ticket, which is my whole days wages. So really, I’ve lost money working all day to help make the city more beautiful.
Additionally, the money management problem at the MTA are incredibly real. They’re one of the only city services that actively turns a profit. However, that money gets siphoned away into various political slush funds or downtown beautification projects that don’t provide the real upgrades our transit services need.
I love working in this city, I love helping it’s air be more breathable, and talking to folks from every neighborhood about how to protect their trees. I support measures like extending metered parking, and despite needing a vehicle to do my work- I’m very much pro public transit. This isn’t going to solve the problem though, it’s just creating a host of new ones.

Again what most advocates are missing is that fact that now if you l8ve in any borough but upper Manhattan and the Bronx your are going to pay an EXIT TAX! The onl6 free ways to leave NYC is the Holland, Lincoln and Geworge Washington Bridge. If you live in Bklyn, Queens or Long Island you have to cross the East River to come.into the city or go over the Tri-borough Throgs Neck or Whitstone bridge. The Holland and Lincoln tunnel are in the congestion pricing Zone. So now you have to pay to leave NYC.. how the fuck is that fair? How is that even legal? I think it's definitely a racist and biased situation because it unduly stresses and causes harm to those without means that want and should have a legally free way to egress and move without hindrance throughout the United States.

When you’re doing inspections could you not just ride a bike or a Surron or something? You can move quicker and find somewhere almost anywhere to chain up within sight of the inspection zone. I run my own tree service not in NYC, but I’ll ride my bicycle around when I do the city tree bids. Sometimes I ride a Suzuki dr650 to go quote jobs and collect payments when I need to.

I was completely shocked to see how similar the management and money-making method of governance in America is to what we see in Iran.
This same plan has been used as a traffic management plan in Tehran for years and managers were promised the same things that New York managers had promised: clean air, less traffic, a more suitable public transportation system, etc.
But none of the above was achieved and everything got worse:
Traffic has not changed because people have to go to their workplaces or their homes and they have no choice. And public transportation cannot serve people efficiently because of old and worn-out cars and limited and inefficient rail lines. The cost of equipping, renovating, and expanding public transportation has always been one of the challenges of the municipality in the headlines and always in a trickle-down manner.
Some people have no work in the city centers and traffic control areas, but they have to pass through it every day, for example, from the east to the west of the city in the morning to go to work and vice versa at night to return home. These groups have no choice but to bypass the traffic control area and this has resulted in very high traffic in other areas. While the highways within the traffic control area actually have very light traffic.
These two lead to more traffic and higher fuel consumption.
Finally, the price set by the municipality to enter the area has practically turned this project into a big piggy bank for the municipality, because after all these years, everyone thought of paying the cost and taking that additional cost from the end customer...
This was Tehran's experience with the traffic management plan. I hope the Americans will not suffer from it
Thank you for the useful content and the effort you make.

Also nice hat. Here in Sweden, they put up cameras like 15 years ago to enter the city. They said that it was NOT a congestion tax, no no, it was only for "dirty" vehicles, not for so called "environmentally friendly" vehicles. The citizens voted against it in a referendum conjoined with the normal elections. The politicians didn't care and called the referendum not to be absolute but merely indicative.
Then they called it a congestion tax and put it on everyone. Also they put the congestion tax onto the motorway around the city effectively making this a tollway. And now they have started on banning non-rich people from driving on some roads in the city.
I can't drive my small 3 cylinder car down Hornsgatan, but if you have the money to buy a sports car with a V12 that has a higher co2 print, you can drive to your hearts consent. This is just to tax the poor.

First, knowing how the city awards contracts means I know there's no way the subways are going to improve, no matter how much money is thrown at them. That money literally has to go through a union kickback filter before pen is put to paper. The NY times did a great article on this. It's harder to haul stuff around in like large or heavy objects, kids, pets, moving, you have no privacy, it's more dangerous, it takes much longer, not everywhere is as reachble without a vehicle even in a city...where I live I'd still take the bus to work if I had a vehicle but I'd still want my own vehicle to do other things like travel or hiking etc..

The problem isn’t air quality or congestion taxes. The problem is the fundamental issue that the US was built for cars. You can’t fix traffic in a country where cars are the most important transportation infrastructure. If there were good, functional, affordable alternatives to driving people would use them. The only thing a tax like this does is force people who have no other options but to drive a car to pay more for the “privilege” of driving. The reason why this has worked in other countries is because in most other developed countries cars aren’t the sole source of transportation. In most other countries (especially Europe) public transportation actually works and is fictional. Congratulation tax works in those cities because they have affordable and good quality public transportation that people can use, and pay an extra 5-10$ as a congestion tax is fine because if you can’t afford it you can take public transportation like trains and subways that actually work and function properly.

The money will get eaten up by salaries, waste, and pensions. And you know the money will be put into the "general fund" to pad shortfalls in other places.
The MTA unions also will absolutely not avoid dipping their hands in this pot.
