Well, Harrison, if those passengers were on a tight time schedule, they're going to be late, no thanks to Amtrak. You did your part - - definately runs better. "So shines a good deed in a weary world." Thanks for sharing. 👍 👍 👍
Ahh just give it full throttle and say whoops sorry for tge spilt coffee lol. Oh there's a joke im sure you all heard about Johnny playing with his trains. It's hilarious.
One of the first locomotives I ever received as a child was the Life-Like version of this Amtrak F40. It came in a set with a second F40 dummy unit and a caboose, IIRC
Amtrak and Via also operated a train between Chicago and Toronto, the "International," which used a mixture of Amtrak and Via equipment in each consist, so your consist actually is somewhat realistic. The service ended in the early 2000's. I'm hoping to get a Via F40PH-2D and some coaches to model that train but bring it into the 2010's. My plan is to model Chicago's South Side in the 2010 decade.
Excellent job of maintenance to the Amtrak locomotive. F40PH my favorite locomotive. F40PH in N scale, Bachmann for run my layout with Amtrak bi-nivel passengers cars.
Hey Harrison how you been doing ? Again, I wanna thank you for teaching me how to take a pancake motor apart and put it back together again ! Also explaining to me the differences between the Bachmann vs. LifeLike, although Tyco also had that same style of motor too, didn’t it ??? Dude I’ve been looking at your thumb ! I don’t know what you did with it, if you hit your thumb with your hammer ??? Little Brother, I feel for you ! Do you think you’re going to lose the entire nail ??? Whatever happens, I hope it’s painless for you !!! 🌊🐺
Remember the 2-6-2 prairie I have. Its probably same age as this locomotive . Bachmann has no spare parts for steamers etc that is what they told me. My fph40 thats a lifelike is exactly thr same as this besides plastic rear wheels. Providing the front wheels shiny it runs great.
Unfortunately Bachmann locomotives have not withstood the tests of time. Lifelike made locomotives that had less features (4 wheel pickup instead of 8 and plastic drive wheels) but they made minor design changes which have allowed them to last longer, mainly they didn't pressure fit Nylon around pieces of metal which has caused Bachmann models to develop cracks over the years.
I also have a F40PH, i dont know what company made it, but its a pole motor rather than a pancake, it uses a u joint which i thought was pretty weird, it has an RTA livery for the city of Joliet in Illinois. And i learned about those springs the hard way, i didn’t lose the plates or the springs tho
I took two of those pancake motors one time, and made a Life Like GP38 frame so it could receive one on each end. It ran like you wouldn't believe, as it had twice the horsepower. I added weight and it didn't need traction tires afterwards.
You need a Third-Hand-type parts holder device, Harrison! You might be able to get them from Micro-Mark, assuming that they ship to your neck of the woods ;-)
Hey you ever going to do more railway speeder video? I just watched the whole playlist last night and really enjoyed it. Was just wondering if there were going to be more!
Hello harrison i have a question im gonna be cleaning and lubicating my bachmann santa fe emd f9 no 307 but the problem is if the screws are rusty can you use sandpaper for it or not? Plus what lubicant do i need to use because i use bachmann light gear oil. Also that motor is also used for lionel ho locomotives from 1974-1977 because i recently got a lionel chessie gp9 with the chassis similar to bachmann.
If you are having trouble getting the screws out because of rust, the slightest amount of WD-40 will help. If all you're trying to do is remove rust of the screws, just drop them into some vinegar and the acid will remove the rust. For lubricant, all you need is a thin oil. I usually use labelle 102 for this.
I have an old Lionel, that looks just like that 3 pole motor and all . I need to know about getting replacement wheel sets with axles as they are all crooked. Any idea where? It would be a plus if I could add pickups to the motorized wheels like that one has, as one truck is not motorized and the motorized wheels have yucky rubber wheels that I want to eliminate.
I wish I could help with finding parts but I wouldn't know where to look ether, I don't work on old lionel locos much and I don't usually replace parts. Having said that, going through bins at train shows or searching on ebay can be successful sometimes. Hopefully another member of the community will have a better idea of where to look. Best of luck.
Basic home maintenance; do you have a tutorial on adding decoders to older non-DCC N-scale locomotives? I have a few, and am not getting my questions answered on the interweb. Example - an Atlas U25B, LED head & tail lights but no advice on how to hook them up to the leads on a (for example) DZ126 or similar. You seem like someone who has been there. There are 3 solder pads on each tiny LED board; do I solder to them or remove the pads first?
I've never installed DCC on an N scale locomotive but unless it's DCC ready, a common rule of thumb is to isolate everything. The decoder acts as a gateway for power so wires that would connect from the motor to different areas of the locomotive must all be detoured through the decoder. DC Power source-Motor DCC Power source-decoder-motor. The same process is done for lighting. If you want to send an email to scrumptiousmodeltrains@gmail.com to send me some photos of what you're trying to do, I would be happy to try and help.
@@SMTMainline - I'm gradually finding what I want; too many TH-cam "how-to" videos stop the camera right at the point where they should show or tell "how to." Even searching the hobby shops, the common search words often don't exist on the parts they have in stock! Frustrating, but I'm getting there. Thanks to your videos, they are helping me understand the ones that don't help. Believe it or don't, the F40PH video helped me with clues to installing decoders. Maybe the best thing is building my confidence to disassembling a loco, instead of being afraid to dig into it.
Hey what's up I got it locomotive it's a Santa Fe I had it for about 10 years I got it in a plastic bag sealed up in a styrofoam cooler Jackie Durbin Spaceman
I run them slower sometimes but these older ones with 3 pole motors are meant to go pretty quick. I also find it more exciting to watch them zip around the layout.
@@dirtydanstrains1414We're both doing the same thing but I don't think my video is a "copy" of yours. The editing style, commentary and even the order in which things are done is quite different. There were videos made many years ago of how to work on these engines but they are all made differently - it doesn't mean they're copying each other.

I accidentally had my volume all the way up when Harrison said “Well, folks” and it scared the absolute crap outta me.
Hehe
same and I was wearing headphones
Hey...with SOME of us, you could scare the crap out of us and then bury our remains in a matchbox...
Lol sometimes Ieave my volume all the way up and it scares me
The Amtrak F40PH is my favourite Amtrak locomotive.
Trainman777 I do sorta. I like NJT’s F40PH-2CATs more.
Great name btw
@@UnionCountyPhotography Those are my favorite. Miss seeing them on the RVL.
Same
Paulville, Grovemont & New Jersey RR yep
Interesting that you're servicing Amtrak, Amtrak turned 49 May 1st.
John Kamloops, BC
I can't stress enough how pretty that f40 looks
I like when you service loco that's why you are my favorite youtuber
Love the f40ph and it's simplistic boxy appearence
Hi, and thank you for all these videos. I lost count of how many of your videos I watched.
Excellent job of maintenance to the Amtrak locomotive.
F40PH my favorite locomotive.
F40PH in N scale, Bachmann for run my layout with Amtrak bi-nivel passengers cars.
Hope those passengers aren’t angry as they will not arrive on schedule lol. Another very informative video Harrison
You did a excellent job of repairing your F40PH
Who in the hell can dislike STM’s videos?!?!
Another good runner Harrison. Looks like that one has plenty of room for a dcc upgrade.
Thanks for your video I do have an older Bachmann locomotive. Keep up the good work. I find them helpful.

I love F40s! I have one in Phase IV
Too bad it’s not F40PH Friday, but very interesting because I love the Amtrak F40PH’s. Thanks for the video SMT!
I really like those locomotives
Video: is 20 min. long
He: just some basic maintenance

Ya boi Pezer ......maybe throw up a video. Sounds like an interesting locomotive
Alco Power i do have like 2 or 3, not on any of my locomotives tho, ill make one either today or tomorrow
When working with Models with small pieces I like to put them in a box lid so they don't roll away or get lost on the work surface
I took two of those pancake motors one time, and made a Life Like GP38 frame so it could receive one on each end. It ran like you wouldn't believe, as it had twice the horsepower. I added weight and it didn't need traction tires afterwards.
If the traction tires are in good shape that makes a huge difference.
i am a big fan of the F40PH locomotives I have Bachmann spectrum and I am going to get a UP F40PH soon
Love the video, maybe try putting a second motor in it so it can pull heavier trains.
SMT: This thing maybe hasn’t been the 90s. Also SMT: *has a video lubricating this locomotive*
Cool, I like the F40
That's a fast loco wow
Anudder great restoration mom ami!
Cool video
Might do something like this someday. I don't really have anything else to do.
I have a Amtrak 40ph train it works and I got it from a antique store
Very similar to old Lionel I have here too.
Ohhhh boi SMT mainline video. First. Had to say it.

@@alcopower5710 already have
To make it look less “toy-ish” I guess, you could put a coat of matte clear coat
what causes a pancake motor locomotive just to light up and not move?
Dirty commutator, missing brush or wire off the motor if the motor's dead, cracked gears jamming if the motor's trying to work.
I have the same Exact one . Mine no longer works tho. As I speak I’m looking for a replacement one
Nice
Sweet mother of bees!!! What happened to your nail Harrison??
I hear there are still a few amtrak f40s.
Can you test run the engine you recently got in your P.O. Box
I have to ask: why does this loco have a horn-hook coupler in the front, but a knuckle coupler at the rear?

Harrison have you seen/gotten a US Army ho scale diesel locomotive ?
Yay F-40ph
i would like these even today if they used thunderjet armatures
More like 1983. Those were the first Bachmann F40's. Anything after 1990-92, has 8 wheel drive and flywheels.
That horn is out of scale
They definitely are but engines from this era were never known for being very realistic so I will cut it some slack.
SMT Mainline they are good runners if you know how to maintain them but you can always buy a horn model that’s more accurate though
There is no way that that Bachmann locomotive has separately applied air hose things on the front!
53rd beat you guys!!!!!
You should think about buying a cheap but nice resend 3d printer
no offense but what happened to your thumb but anyways good video
It was involved in a small drilling accident.
What I want to know is that person who dislikes the videos cause there is always one and it is just petty to do it just because
I have a Amtrak 229 40 pro train set

You should really get a parts tray, you’re gonna lose some spring or screw or something
live to night
f40ph dont cut me open
smt mainline im only doing it for like 20min's
sheriffs department alright who did it
smt mainline it was bachmann
can you check out TrainWorld.com??? it is awesome!! it is full of model trains!! the store buildings are in Lynbrook NY and Brooklyn NY
