You are a life saver! I am an old model railroader, 50 years old, getting back into and restoring old locos and other stock, but I took apart one of these that is still dead, and broke a brass connection that goes into the steam generator I think, more on that later, but the engine is dead, I will try using this video, I think I can take it apart now with confidence. Thank you for keeping my favorite hobby alive! My trains will hopefully pass to my gran children some year if my son ever gets married again, if not, I will put you in my will to take possession of my collection.
I had 2 of those new back in’79 or ‘80. Still have them. One was blue, The Royal Blue 638 and the Chattanooga 638. I renumbered the Chattanooga the 630 back then so they would be different numbers and, I painted out the tender black to letter it for my RR. Someday, I want to revive the old Tyco layout. Over 30 years gone by since it was running!
Thanks for this video! I have watched it a few times. I restored my old Chattanooga and got it running again an repainted in great northern. Just picked up an almost NIB Chattanooga only missing the smoke fluid but still has the little funnel. Tested and it works great for 45 years ish old. Need to clean and deluge. Planning on repainting to be Milwaukee Road great and orange. All the best and thanks!!!
Hi Bud, I have really enjoyed going back and watching your videos. It’s great how you give a second life to these forgotten classics. We often get caught up into the whole “prototypical” model railroading (myself included) and seem to forget about the nostalgic model trains that got us into the hobby. Keep doing what you do! I’m loving it and it’s really making me reflect back to when I was young and had such great times running trains with my grandfather. John
Nothing but faith in you getting the Chattanooga running Harrison. Run it with the Andrews Sisters singing in the background and you have a winner. Two words - - spare parts. Build up the graveyard with cheap locomotives you can cannibalize when needed. Just don't tear apart the Canadiana!!! 😱 Great job, it just needed to warm up a little and break in the reassembled parts. 👍👍👍
Ya could make a new draw bar for that loco and tender,by just getting a sheet of styrene plastic (an old "for sale" sign works great), then cutting a few strips, gluing them together and then drilling small holes on the ends to fit the parts together.
Very nice work! For such a crude Tyco machine, that was running very sweetly by the end! Can't wait to see what other locos you work your magic on next! I have got one of these that used to run surprisingly well until one of the gears needed replacing.
Nothing ever phases you does it SMT I mean "and the power has just gone out." Is the best response you have for that unless if this has happened before that was just a hilarious response to that event lol
Harrison, I had a chattanooga choo-choo long time ago. I lost it and cannot find it. Mine didn't have the silver underneath or red roof. Glad you got it going. You might be able to make a drawbar-Great Vid!!
Your video is so helpful. I was able to parts together a Tyco 0-8-8 loco. It runs ok but I think I need to do a better clearing job or change the motor.
I have two of these things! In fact they're both sitting slightly above me on my shelf. One of them is for parts and is a roller, and the other is the pristine condition runner. They're very strangely built.
I recently worked on a model of the other version of this, Clementine - got it running, of sorts too... But my units tender drive wheel-spins a lot, despite traction tyres fitted, might try adding weight to see if that helps at some point...
Not trying to criticize, but just 3 things: 1: the red roof is factory original, and so is the black one; 2: it is actually a 2-8-0, you just need the guide truck. 3: we had a "meme day" at school so... I LIKE TRAINS!
Awesome video Harrison you always do an awesome job sorry if I’m being annoying to you about my Livestream and for me being a pest and have a very awesome day Harrison
So i have been working on mine. I found a way to get the contacts springs and little bushing things in. It runs but it will only run by completely lifting the rear wheels off. So i disconnected the wire to that boggie and taped it off to isolate it and i still have to lift the rear axle off. I tried flipping the axle around thinking it draws from 1 track .but that didn't work. I reassembled it to its original set up and still have to lift thd rear axle off for it to power up. I cant figure it out.
SMT have you ever been to the Buffalo Central Train show? they hold one every year in September. They just had it sept 7th - 8th. I know you sometimes take trips down to Maine so i was wondering. I went on the 7th, really cool place, really great finds. Gott a blue - box Mantua General MIB for $25!
You have to connect the wires to the blocks the conductor wheels go to in the tender. The Engine just needs power for the light and smoke box. There should be a positive and negative running to the engine.
I have one myself, unfortunately it doesn't run. The headlights work, and the tender wheels fire to life when they dont have much pressure applied to them. Any suggestions on how to fix it?
SMT - If the Royal Blue's drawbar is removable, you could install it on the Chattanooga steamer for a test. If it works, you can fabricate one for the Chattanooga. I was wondering if the locomotive's wheel bearings, valve gear bearings, & cross head guides should also be lubricated? Has anyone added weight to a Tyco powered tender & found it to help the operation ? The tender pushes the locomotive & pulls the train, I thought of adding weights for traction. I imagine replacing the traction tires may be a good idea.
Mine has the same problem with track contact. I have to hold the tender wheel against the rails. They never keep contact. Mine and same with mine stops and goes. I find with a hesvy weighted car behind the tender it stays running a little longer but when it hits a uneven track or miscontact it will stall.
I think what happened with the engine, as the 0-8-0 Chattanooga never had a lamp on the top of the smoke box, so the cab is from a newer Chattanooga, while the boiler and stuff is the original.
Parts of the track have little spaces in between the rails separating them from the rest of the track, the separated seconds can be turns on and off with switches.
So my first ever engine was the tyco clementine and it didn't run but I've found the issue it looks like a drive gear issue do you know anyplace i can find one
that's the 1991 Chattanooga . one of the better ones the older ones are tender driven but it will work just fine gr8 job . Let me know if you want to do some trading on that canadiana I'll take just the body. I'll give you a Running Mantua. Baltimore Ohio pretty good shape
Big Fan of your channel. One question though. What is the minimum curve radius that you use on your layout? I'm in the process of planning a layout similar in side to you. I notice you have some full sized VIA and GO passenger cars. Just wondering what your curve radius is and how well those cars make it around those curves?
I use 15" radius on industrial sections where only small switchers have to go and while this works, I wouldn't recommend it. 18" is the lowest on most layouts because it can support the majority of mid sized locomotives although if you have the space I'd just go right to 22".
I actually need to get a steam engine fixed as a piston holder has snapped sadly we tried stripping it no good so we put her back together should we send it back into bachmann?
Also SMT I'm about to fix a santa-fe f-7 unit because it's motor is all wonky around the innards / shaking I think a support unit came out or the drive terrain... can you help give me tips???
Also, the cab is late 80s and the boiler is original, because they ditched the upper headlight after a few years. If you ever want to restore your smoke unit, I can give you instructions.
I was at the Train store and I found a train for 4bucks it had all the parts and runs flawlessly. The only thing I had to do was give it knuckle couplers
I have a tyco f9 that needs rewired, can't send you the engine it would be to expensive to ship across the border. Can you do me a huge favor and send or make a video showing how it goes together
I just bought one of these new old stock. The smoke fluid was almost completely evaporated in the old tube, so I did not dare to add it to the smoke fluid reservoir because it was very viscous. Instead I added 10 drops (as per instructions) of Bachmann HO smoke fluid (in the hold where the bell goes) and got no smoke even after 10 minutes of high speed running. Instructions say to use Tyco smoke fluid #713. Anyone know of a good fluid to use on these smokers?

Got This at a train show recently perfectly running, pretty nice little locomotive
I love how calm you were when the power went put.
Lights: *die*
SMT: "and the power has just gone out"
Imagine if it had happened as he touched the power leads to the motor
Fantastic train. My train as a child was a Chattanooga train. Thanks for sharing your video with us. Have a great day.
My first train 1973 was Tyco GP-20 Burlington with El Capitan box car.
Oh man, I think almost every HO model train collection has had one of these. I certainly had one when I was a teenager.
They do seem pretty common.

Alright, we've seen probably enough model trains. Now for an actual locomotive. You choose the locomotive brand.
When the power went out I thought I lost my monitor!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Still one of the strangest moments on the channel lol.
Harrison,
I had a chattanooga choo-choo long time ago. I lost it and cannot find it. Mine didn't have the silver underneath or red roof. Glad you got it going. You might be able to make a drawbar-Great Vid!!
I had one of these growing up. I might look for some at the next train show. I imagine this could be a start of some kitbashing.
Nice restoration
Ur the Dr of resurrecting trains
Good job, I like how you take the chance and keep working on the old tyco till you get them going. -Gary
Nice One Harrison!
I've got 2 broken ones I got somewhat recently, but haven't been able to figure it out. Really excited to watch this
Glad it's helpful

I have this one plus Clementine in the tender drives i also have a red and black one has Reno on side that takes driveshaft
Well I'd say another restore job well done least it runs now, nice steam train
I'd say it's a good looking locomotive. You got her to run. That's over half the battle!
Always enjoy your videos. Keep up the amazing work!
great video :)
You should come down to Chattanooga it’s beautiful here and there is 4501 630 and 29 here
funtastic... Great job... How is the mammoth project coming?

Is there any update on this? Did you get it running better? And what year did they start putting the motor in the engine instead of the tinder?

That’s funny, I saw an eBay listing about this engine
You must to put the clamp, and change the rubbers on the tender black wheels
Hey EMT, can you or do you know how to fix a Bachmann Brill Trolley? I can't get mine working.
I think what happened with the engine, as the 0-8-0 Chattanooga never had a lamp on the top of the smoke box, so the cab is from a newer Chattanooga, while the boiler and stuff is the original.

Yes.
Several tyco locos when you first fix them, they need a lot of running in
Very cool restoration but I have a question ,how to do put dc engines on a other piece of track without the other unit setting of form the dc power?
Parts of the track have little spaces in between the rails separating them from the rest of the track, the separated seconds can be turns on and off with switches.
Hi what voltage and amps did the Chattanooga loco worked on?

Does it have a little hole behind funnel
Are u running it with oil
I love 0 8 0., i have 2 !
You need both positive and negative from the loco to make it run properly.
My friend has 3 of them And Building one out of 3 of them.
I Would Love To Get A Ton Of Engines And Put them Together And Get Them On the Line

SMT Mainline how do i fix a wheel thats connected to a wire but its falling out the train is a Lionel HO scale BN GP30.
my chatanoogas motor had stoped working so my dad "fixed it " with santa fe f7 trucks
Heeeey what about the smoke Unit? And the light bulb?
Could you now build the brass kit you did a couple of months ago
It's on the list
Yyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
I just got my drivers permit yesterday, when did you get yours SMT?
Good for you, I got my permit in April 2017.
Awsome
im looking for someone for a restoration. think you're up for the task?
I'm looking for the 2-8-0 Version of this. I have my eye on one from Ebay but I'm literally broke.
You can usually find them pretty cheap at train shows.
I actually need to get a steam engine fixed as a piston holder has snapped sadly we tried stripping it no good so we put her back together should we send it back into bachmann?
I'm saying this because she won't run without the piston sadly
Also it's a DC locomotive
The piston rod is broken and the train won't run unless the piston is
Moving 😓
Also SMT I'm about to fix a santa-fe f-7 unit because it's motor is all wonky around the innards / shaking I think a support unit came out or the drive terrain... can you help give me tips???
Also I think they are replaceable
You need to make a draw bar
Also, the cab is late 80s and the boiler is original, because they ditched the upper headlight after a few years.
