You all should learn how to ID species before going out and taking part in this kind of harvest. The majority of fishes you speared and pulled up were native Sucker species mixed in with some non-native/invasive Carps. Those native fish are important for the aquatic ecosystem to function properly. If you’re planning to eat them, great but if you’re just removing them thinking you’re doing something beneficial, you’re wrong.
This reminds me people used to do this type of spearing back on the early 60's they did it for food staple for the winter.when they would get the holes cut with one man cross cut saws were used. Then us kids were sent up and down stream with sticks. We would walk back and forth across the river tapping the ice to drive the fish. Fish would go down stream and push back up stream. Black suckers made good soup, white and red horse suckers were good pickled, carp were for smoking. In the 80's I used to can red horse and carp I used to put 2 table spoons of ketchup in each jar this turned the meat pink like salmon.. we called it mock salmon (a poor man's salmon) . As a kid my family would go and help these families spear. They used to put corn down in the slots cut to see the fish. But DNR said that they couldn't use corn. Because the fish would feed on the corn. So they used sand much like what your doing in your video. The DNR at the time had no problem with taking a few game fish because they needed the food.. If there wasn't enough ice they would go out in boats. No motors needed our poles were 15 to 20 feet long. I'm from south eastern Minnesota and most of the rivers were shallow. Hope you like this bit of history. It sure was fun. Oh ya when it was really cold my dad would start a fire on the ice to stay warm. Some people said that was nuts! But in all the years we had a fire we never melted through or feel in.
Can doesn’t mean should. Stop glorifying the spread of misinformation. Our native species are under enough pressure without TH-cam “experts” misidentifying them as invasive species.
Yeah. Like a whole 2 of them were non-native. And like a whole one of them were actually a problematic species. These are probably the same people to start threatening your life if you were to keep a bass and eat it.
I didn’t see one Asian carp. Buffalo are some of the best eating fish in the river this makes no sense to kill them and leave them. The eagles don’t need you to kill for them. I’m a very avid outdoorsman and I can tell you right now this is not conservation. You give outdoorsmen a bad name.
Those would make great catfish bait what do yall do with them packaging and sell them as bait would be a great way to make some extra cash doing what you like
What a joke...this should be considered wanton waste. "Leave some on the ice for the eagles"?? Unreal, almost none of these werent the invasive carp species (Common Carp) and most are native fish. Great example of a huge disrespect to our outdoors....
Do you also shoot whatever animals you see without identifying them when you hunt? A lot of those fish were suckers. State must have really lax conservation laws.
I was reading comments just cringing while the video was still playing, and they feed eagles.........obsessive fisherman here and you guys should be embarrassed and ashamed of this horseshit video. See beautiful buffalo and common carp mostly. You scare them to you with redneck noise and then kill for fun. Fucking disgusting
That’s awesome. Just so you know those are quillbacks and smallmouth buffalo which are a native species but it does seem there is an over abundance of them there.
You should probably change the video title or learn to actually ID what fish species you're spearing. The vast majority of the fish in this video aren't invasive carp, they're native sucker species (buffalo, quillback, etc.). Hopefully, this type of spearing will be considered wanton waste in the near future.
You can spear "rough fish" so obviously you don't know how to identify fish due to the fact all the species you listed are in fact "rough fish". There is a song by Godsmack you should listen to it's called "crying like a b***h
@@brycep7093Well where I live (Missouri) any rough fish can be speared, that includes but isn't limited to carp (any variety) suckers, drum, gar, and others
Some of it goes to an eagle sanctuary and some gets left for all of the local eagles to eat. It’s pretty cool to come back the next day and see 10 eagles eating.
This is sad. All the native fish (aka NOT Asian carp) killed and wasted. Either eat them or leave them alone. Nothing wrong with eating Buffalo or other suckers.

Carp ain’t bad, marinate it in buttermilk n beer with seasoning give it a few hrs then pan cook it in butter, or beer batter deep fried & it taste damn good skin on…….😮❤

Pretty sure the limit per person either way is 500 for suckers they’re not doing anything wrong

What do you do with the carp? Do you eat them, feed them to pets, use them for fertilizer or leave them on the ice?
So sad watching all these native fish being killed by folks who can’t be bothered to learn how to properly ID.
it really sucks doesn't it
You can spear all "rough fish" so quit crying

Interesting way to remove carp. Unfortunately, I don't think a single one of those harvested fish was actually a carp.

Нельзя так жёстко. Вы как дикий зверь
We do that on small creeks around here. Only we use a willow branch with a copper wire on the end with a loop. Then we snare the fish.
Dumping fill material into the waterway? Might not want the DNR to see this.
what river?
How did someone develop this technique? Pretty cool!
Why?
This video should be sent to the local game warden....i didnt see any carp?
Exactly. All those Buffalo fish killed and not eaten?? You get fined for not having a fishing license but they can waste 300 buffalo fish?
Looks like fun. Some of those looked liked what we call quill back buffalo. Do you have barbs on your gigs?
Yes we do have barbs on them! Makes it easier when lifting them out
