      An RO in a beginner's class for IPSC told us that he might say "if you think you're finished, unload and show clear". But I guess what he meant was he would say that if he knew you are a newbie. He wouldn't say it generally. So, do tell your ROs that you are new at this and it's your first match. They might be nice to you and help you out a little.

      Just go to a match. You'll learn right away what to practice. You don't typically set up stages to practice. You set up individual elements of stages and work on 1 thing at a time. If you're interested in this, dont wait. Just go and shoot. You'll get lots of help and have a blast. These videos ate fantastic and I wish I had seen something like this before my 1st match.

      Training for matches can be really basic small things. Because if you break it down, it's always: draw from holster, get good grip, get good sight picture, shoot target. Then move to other position, shoot next target. You have to break it down into simple moves that you can robotically reproduce without making unnecessary movements. Work on your shooting stance, work on your grip, work on your trigger pull. Then combine all these moves at the match.

    After having shot a bunch of IPSC matches with no formal training, I decided to take a class with a good trainer and I can only recommend this to all beginners. He showed us how most people waste a lot of time with unnecessary movements and gave us some basic drills (most of them dry-fire drills) so that we can avoid making unnecessary movements in the future.
    This is the reason why when you watch the highest level pros, it looks so smooth and easy. They don't make unnecessary moves.

    • @highks496
      @highks496 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For anything more than one or two steps, your left/weak hand lets go of the pistol (as a right-handed shooter) because you'll run much faster. For running backwards to the right, place the pistol over your left shoulder pointing downrange. Be careful not to flag your shoulder, this needs to be practiced. For running backwards to the left, point your pistol towards the backstop with your arm extended, pistol upside-down (it's the easiest position for your arm to be in).
      If you are running straight back 180° from the backstop you can do either or, depending on where you want to turn next, left or right.

    • @highks496
      @highks496 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, it's the same in IPSC, you can shoot any target as many times as you want and your best two hits get scored. But because your score is divided by time, it doesn't usually benefit you unless you miss or hit a no-shoot (with no hit to the target). With Charlies, even the best shooters can't usually shoot fast enough to make up the points. If you're really fast you can better your score when you see a delta and hit it with a third shot that's an alpha.
      As a beginner, don't even bother re-shooting unless you completely missed. The difference is, a charlie is two points less than alpha, a delta is four points less than alpha, a miss is zero minus ten points. So with a miss, definitely shoot again!

    From my experience with IPSC so far (it's really almost the same in USPSA): time is super important, so being faster and more sloppy will initially give you better results, but you'll be stuck at some point. Better work out the basics and try to become faster slowly with good hits. Avoid unnecessary movements. Get at least one training session with a professional trainer or very high-level shooter who can tell you what you're doing egregiously wrong.
    Don't let your ego get in the way. Even if you've been shooting for decades, a trainer can tell you stuff that you don't even realize. Even the very best world-class shooters rely on trainers to watch them shoot and analyze their movements.

      A miss ends up costing you 15 points. You lose the 5 points you could have scored by shooting an alpha, and you incur a penalty of -10pts. If you are referring to a no-shoot white target, and you didn’t break the perf to where its scoring both as a hit as well as a no-shoot penalty, you end up with a miss (Mike) AND a no shoot (-10) for a total of -25 points, which is the equivalent of 2 paper targets and a steel target!
