- Elden Ring is an amazingly massive game. There’s a lot to learn here about the land and the history of it too. But there’s also a lot of mystery to behold, questions that haven’t been answered. One of those mysteries that I find incredibly interesting is everything regarding the One Great. So, is the One Great an Outer God? A deity? A being? A concept? Or an event? To theorise on all of that, we need to understand the relationships that the Greater Will, The Flame of Frenzy, and the Crucible have to the One Great, and I hope you enjoy this massive deep dive.

EDIT: I realised the Age of Absolute ending was a joke ending when it came out (the April 1st release gave that one away). But, I didn't realise the voice clip associated with it was an unused piece of dialogue from the "Age of Order" ending. I thought it was its own unique piece of dialogue, my bad.

I think it's worth noting too that the default ending is "The Age of Fracture". It suggests that the manner in which fractures do occur is by way of prior Elden Lords not mending the Elden Ring upon their corronation. It might also be the case that Godfrey wasn't the first Elden Lord, since the dragons also had their own lord (probably Placidusax) that they would rally to protect. I think Hyetta prefixing the world's suffering with "fractures" also suggests that the fractures are in some way responsible for that suffering, but also the births and souls she mentions too. Given that the Age of Order basically takes away free will from The Lands Between, as a way to mend the shattering, I reckon that the ideas behind the shattering are essentially that somehow free will, death (or those that live in death), and omen or the crucible, are all contradictory within the current framework of the Golden Order - so the Order must have had other aspects about it also that were _not_ mended post-fracture, that should still exist in The Lands Between, which cause much of the strife we end up seeing. Maybe some contenders for these entities are the stars, or whatever empowers the beast-magic.

also Placidusax initially had 5 heads. You can see on the model that 3 of them were cut off. Needles to say I think Placidusax was the Elden Lord to the One Great.
I also noticed that Godrick the Grafted had 6 fingers; which is a common irl trait associated with giants

yeah, googling it reveals it was an april fools day thing. found an article on gamerant that includes an *updated* section saying as much.
It 100% was a prank made by a modder its rediculous how much issue this has called. The channel that made it was called garden of eyes and it even said in the comments and description of the video that it was a prank!

In Taoism, there's a concept called wuji. It's a difficult thing to explain succinctly here and now, but wuji is essentially nothingness. But not the sterile, frightening nothingness we tend to think of in the West. It's a nothingness that represents infinite potential - the zero from which all other numbers emerge, the cosmic womb. It's from wu that yin and yang arose, as this division into two allowed the manifestation of that latent potential. Just as one gave birth to two, two gave birth to three, and three gave birth to all the phenomena in the universe.
Given the recurrent references to "the two" (yin and yang) and "the three" (the Three Pure Ones), I feel like this might be a reference to that. Perhaps the Two Fingers and Three Fingers are manifestations of primal forces - one of order, structure, and stagnation, one of chaos, destruction, and change. Like yin and yang - the light to the dark, the day to the night, the hot to the cold, the masculine to the feminine. And perhaps, much like the attempts to take death captive, Marika's Golden Order somehow imprisoned the Three Fingers so they could have a rule devoid of chaos - devoid of change.
Because that element of order leading to stagnation is apparent in everything in Elden Ring. The stars can't turn through the sky, no one can truly die and move on, and several characters are trapped in their old ways or their obsessive attempts to regain what was lost, to preserve what's fleeting. This is a big concept in Taoism and Buddhism, the latter being a prominent influence in From Software's work. Leaves change color and fall from the tree, and the sun must set in order to rise again. It's unreasonable for creatures which were born to flourish for only a short time, then perish to make room for something else to demand that they always get what they want and never have to relinquish anything.
To the Golden Order, theirs is the only order. But we know very well from the existence of Farum Azula that they were not the first, and the multiple different endings that involve Mending Runes make it evident that they will not be the last. They've allowed the Lands Between to stagnate and become unable to evolve and renew itself as a result of their cupidity. I think the imprisonment of the Three Fingers is, in some way, an extension of that - bottled-up chaos and change, waiting to clean the slate and start anew. But perhaps, like when you shake a corked bottle, the pressure has built up too much, and now that chaos is one that can't emerge without inflicting absolute destruction.
I think another good connection from the fingers is order and chaos. Even from how they look physically, the 2 fingers are physically together and structured, and when you see the 3 fingers for the first time it spreads apart as far as possible. But the interesting thing is that one can't exist without the other. Just taking a different element into this example, when they removed the death, everyone that wasn't a part of the greater will just suffered in zombie mode. There might be good intentions for doing what you do, but in these larger ideas there's some crazy consequences. By the golden order trying to control everything and banish all those that don't fall in line, the frenzied flame came about. If the frenzied flame carries on, then there are those who will try and prevent its rise. This is a great video well all drink the soup one day 👌

@@thatguy1488 thats a fair statement to make. Massacaring a group of people and casting aside the survivors is inherently a bad thing, I agree with that. But the intentions of those actions is to create a paradise world for the rest of the people free from death. Thats what I mean by intent, the thought process behind it
@@thatguy1488 and I think another good thing to think about is the opposite viewpoint. Not that we agree with it, but to see where the other perspectives thought process lies. So you said that the crucible Knights, the omens and merchants were massacred for no reason right? But if the golden order is making a utopia, these groups of people are working in direct opposition of their ideologies, from their side its like "if your not with me then your against". Its very crusader-like. Does that make it right? No. But there's a reason for the actions, whether we agree with it or not

I believe it's only confirmed he had 4 heads, as seen on the Old Lord's Talisman.

Like maybe she removed runes that included suffering and all that Hyetta talks about, then the meddling of Shabriri and the chant of the Caravan brought shape to the concept of the Frenzied Flame?

The symbology of trees is everywhere in this game, so I think the older Crucible/Draconic Elden Ring was literally uprooted (ie stolen) by the defeat of the Dragonlord and the establishment of the new Golden Order. Uprooting implies that the older version of the Elden Ring was natural in some way, growing out of the earth, and was stripped for useful parts by humans and their gods. A crown is warranted with strength! The strong take!
Here's sorta 'my version' of this line of theory:
The One Great is simultaneously an outer god and a singularity of the entire universe: Something I noticed when Hyetta tells of the will of the frenzied flame is that it seems functionally quite similar to a big bang, and the frenzied flame's will is to regress the universe into a state preceding the fracture of the one great to undo the possibility of suffering. In The Frenzied Flame Ending it appears to not discriminate on what the yellow flame consumes; Burning plants and stone alike as it connects to a larger flame placed in the sky. This to me indicates that the frenzied flame is capable of transferring all matter into combustion, and leads me to the big crunch theory of our universe (essentially some scientists believe that our universe will eventually collapse in on itself and reform as a singularity, eventually to expand and form as the universe we recognize again)
I apply the big crunch to the frenzied flame due to their various similarities, and as such I believe that as a result of the frenzied flame reverting with the greater will into the one great that there will be some form of catalyst that fractures them again, effectively resulting in a time loop.
I believe the crucible was a time period of life before the one great had finished fracturing and the greater will had not yet been fully divorced from the flame of frenzy, and both were responsible for life. This fits the bill for Placidusax quite nicely as the lord during the crucible, seeing as he had five heads before three of them were severed.
...So the misbegotten and omens had features from both outer gods and as a result had to be treated with extreme prejudice for being connected to forces outside the greater will's control after the erdtree was planted or had matured (I particularly note the general design of the misbegotten and omens as malign and chaotic; Their body parts aren't in harmony with each other as there are mammalian and reptilian features to the misbegotten and in the case of omens we can always point to Mohg who's horns has gored one of his own eyes. The omens also seem to be directly tied to bloodflame which is the influence of The Blood Star, another outer god rival to The Greater Will)
I believe the manic half of The One Great willed life to be diverse and free while The Greater Will wished to confine and control life, which stirred contempt in the other half and is what made The Great Relinquisher and/or the Flame of Frenzy what it is after The Shattering
The One Great reminds me of the Mortal Kombat lore! Where the realms were created from The One and it’s urges and pulls forces of the realms to try and become ONE again.
Also I believe that Elden Ring is the game BETWEEN and connecting all FromSoft games. It’s literally The Lands Between 😉 that’s why other races and life forms are able to come from ‘ outside lands’ and you will see a lot of cameos to other works like Yuras armor set descriptions, he obviously came from a land where Wolf from Sekiro gave in to the Demon and carved a land of blood etc

Thanks a bunch dude. It sounds like a massive cope but I have a sneaking suspicion that TH-cam has taken it out of the algorithm in one way or the other. The hourly views I can see show it gaining some good traction after release before flatlining and gaining little to no views over the next few days, and now it's slowly going up again :/

The One Great wanted to have perfect eternal represenatative, it chose eternal dragons but it did not work and Plasudisax got put on deathbed.
Realizing the hold over Lands Between will not be forverer, it fractured to Frenzied Flame that wants to try restart everything. And Greater Will that wants to try again with different kind of orders, perhaps with unbroken lineage. Greater Will promised Marika to be Eternal (or just her Age of Plenty with her lineage), but then chose Gloam-eyed Queen (probably daughter/descendant of Marika) as Empyrian to succeed Marika and G-e Queen then burned Erdtree with her power of Death (and that is why current Erdtree is stump with golden spirit around it, and why Age of Plenty ended). Marika realizing GW broke the promise, chose to shatter the Elden Ring.
My favourite Elden ring theory is that elden ring is actually a prequel to de blob 2 on Wii which is my favourite game and you should make theory videos about de blob 2 on wii
I believe there used to be a giant bed of chaos/great hollow that all living things came from. I believe this thing was made up from 5 main parts. A tree, vines, the timeless storm, a kiln and a flower. But i also believe each had a lord like figure, all working togather like one entity. A sort of godhand like from berserk. But something seperated these aspects that no longer get along, because of how different they now are. The tree and vines are still struggling for dominance. But the flower, storm and kiln have been seperated. A statue of Marika next to Gransax bolt is holding a golden spear, with vines unwrapping from it. Gransax spear is a golden spear, wrapped in vines and surrounded by a tornado. There might even be a flower pot on the "top"(near the handle) but i could be wrong

You know what I've never seen a video on (Doesn't mean there isn't one but just I've not seen) What is 'the fog' it's one big theme with all in the soulsbourne games. Your character always comes from 'beyond the fog' or in Demon's Souls the 'fog' covered the land. Is it the aftelife a different land? Is the fog a membrane between planes of existence? Just a thought.

I think the notion of one god who split himself by choice makes the most sense as the primordial soup notion still means there is a real omnipotent god out there responsible for it.
No other god or godlike entity in the lore is omnipotent, they are all created beings, so they aren't actually god at all.
The great one being a conscious true god that split itself ties that knot in a way.

The fiver fingered hand and the like is most likely a berserk reference. Just saying, god hand and all. Idea of evil, probably also a reference to how later Abrahamic religions have a tendency to demonize older pagan religions that are much more nature and cyclical In belief. The one great sounds like the universe itself sort of splitting into the different cosmic bodies and entities. The gods being almost conceptual in nature, like is believed in mystic religions and alchemy.

I don't believe the whole "Irina is Hyetta" theory. Mainly because, you can literally go back and see Irina's corpse still lying there after talking to Hyetta by the church ruins. And even after Hyetta burns into nothing after she touches the frenzied flame within you, Irina's still there by that log. Idk maybe it's a glitch on my end or something because I do believe some followers like "Shabriri" are able to transfer their conscience to another vessel.
True, but you can also still access guranq after killing malekieth. To add to this, look at what happens go irinas father. He goes completely mad, and if you kill him, he drops a shabriri grape, the exact thing Hyetta is wanting.

I think the reason why the three fingers wants to burn everything is cus fromsoft keeps fuckinh up the pvp and didnt think of adding a frenzy covenant or 6 player cap, thats why its stuck as a 3v1 cus 3v1= three fingers therefore miyazaki is the greater will which implies that the greater will likes being gankers and the three fingers is the honest joe whos tired of using a claymore(like a typical claymore main in ds3) and decided to hardswap(hardswaping is canon shut up) to duel vykes and restore everything to the way it was(gank city where all the degenerates can have nonstop wars) back instead of this lopsided pvp we have today.
