Mat’s got his hands on the Dacia Spring!
It’s a cheap and cheerful electric car that isn’t currently on sale in the UK. The question is, even with a £16,000 price tag, should you consider it over other small electric competitors?
When it comes to materials, it’s fair to say the Spring isn’t exactly the most robust car. The doors seem relatively flimsy, and when you step inside don’t expect to find any soft touch, high-quality materials here! Cheap plastic covers the majority of the cabin, and it doesn’t even come with any cup holders! We have the Extreme edition for this review, which comes with fake leather seats, although the quality doesn’t feel all that good.
When it comes to the battery & range, the Spring comes with a 25kWh battery pack. In the entry-level car this is good for a claimed range of 143 miles, while in the Extreme edition, it drops slightly to 137 miles.
Naturally, the performance figures aren’t anything to write home about. The entry-level delivers just 45hp and hits 60mph in 19 seconds, while the Extreme has 65hp and hits 60mph in over 13 seconds.
But of course, it only costs £16,000, while other small EV competitors can cost almost double that! So is it worth it? You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

I think Mat is missing the point with this car and any cheap car. This shows why I dont like carwow as much as I used to. Supercars and drag races get booring. And when a review of a cheap car rarely pops up, we are told it it rubbish... Just look at the content from 4 years ago. Thats the kind of content that i liked. Interesting, honest reviews of normal, affordable cars and the odd supercar/ luxury cars.

I think there is a point to be made between moaning about luxury items and just disregard for basic things. You can make cheap stuff but still give a damn. The usb position, no cupholders and rattling doors is not something that would have broken the bank in design. Let's not forget, it also scored a whopping 1/5 in NCAP which makes sense as it sounds like it's made from fish tins.

I mean tbf, a Sandero is a lot nicer for the same price or less. It's not electric, but they really had to take everything nice that the Sandero has out of the Spring to make electric _this_ affordable. It's good for a daily commute or going to get groceries, but you really don't wanna drive this thing if you're going farther than 50km...

They don't "think" that, it's just not a lot of money to be made on cheap cars. There's so many costs you can cut before you end up with a car that's a literal safety hazard and Dacia is getting pretty close to that point. The real problem is that a lot of places have shit public transit. You don't see a lot of cheap cars in Vienna for example, and that's not because everyone there is rich, but because people who can't afford a decent car would rather just use the excellent and affordable public transit.

I applaud Dacia for coming up with the Spring. Thus far, euro manufacturers have concentrated on building heavy, extremely fast and very expensive models aimed at the wealthy/business users. If they want private users to embrace the electric car they need to focus on efficiency and produce products at retail prices your average joe like me is prepared to pay. The Spring may be a bit too cheap and cheerful for some but the principle is spot on. I dont want or need a two and a half ton missile that will do 0 to 60 in 3 seconds.

The Dacia Spring is that car but new and electric. Great for short trips around town and just outside of it and it can't get much cheaper. Adding more stuff to make it sound and feel more premium only adds to the cost, size and energy consumption of the car. If that's what you want then Dacia and Renault have other cars you might be more interested in.

The car is a very good city car. You don't have the relatively high fuel consumption for city-driving, but rather a very energy-efficent small electric motor. You can charge it using electricity that definitely is cheaper than fuel, and you have no problems getting into tight parking spaces.
The car produces way less noise pollution than any ICE car, and you don't have any local gas emissions, which is a very good aspect.

It is light for an EV and pretty efficient, and as noted in the video, because it already quite cheap, depreciation is in real terms, very very low (unlike those German overpriced premium cars/EVs Mat loves so much!).
