- This is our new favorite reel for 2016. It comes in a high price point but it has the SV Spool which put it in a new class of reels. The SV System is demonstrated and proven by us work as advertised. We also attempt to explain the reason for the spool capability for handling the backslash problem. Its a great reel for the price. It great for all shallow water fishing including Stick Worms and Fluke. It casts weightless lures better then anything other reel in its price point. It has good cranking power too for a 7 gear ratio reel. My favorite lures to throw on this reel is 1/2 spinnerbait and 2.5 size squarebills. Also, everything else that you can skip.

+OutofWORKoutdoors Your understanding of a free floating spool is off i.e. in a free floating spool such as in this reel, there is no friction between the pinion and the shaft when casting as the shaft does not turn (since the shaft isn't connected all the way through; hence the bearing on the other side. And it existed prior to SV spools.
The new 'free floating' spools on the new zillions are exactly the same minus the rubber poece beside the spool bearing. It's all marketing trash on the boisterous spools. Still great reels.

Really appreciate your explanation as to why you like this reel and why it's so effective. I will be buying this reel next week, but I need to know what the difference is between the USA version and the Japanese import version. I know they are both made in Japan, but why the price difference for the import?
the correct explanation of the SV spool with Air brake is that they use a lighter spring for the rotor combined with the turning rotor (air brake) give you max braking earlier and longer than the a regular non turning rotor. the upside is it controls back lashes better but the distance suffers.
Nice in depth review of that reel. I've only heard negative things about daiwa reels and how they require more maintenance but this year I've finally picked up a lexa 300 for big game fishing. I'm biased from experience so I'm going to stick with shimanos durability. Great video quality by the way
we have two lexa too and those seem cheaply made compare to these other Daiwas we've reviewed.
I haven't touched the regular lexa 300 much but I actually got the newer lexa 300 HD used for saltwater fishing. Only time will tell how it will hold up but from what I've been told from a friend who uses only daiwas now, you have to use at least the steez models and up to see the quality. Any of the lower models will feel cheap on quality and usability.
Hello, you mentioned that the reel is designed for short distance and this is due to the shallow SV spool and loading with fluorocarbon and nylon. What if I load it with 10# braid for finesse bait casting? Would the SV allow it to cast further? We fish different in Singapore. Thanks much. Great video!

Also, been having a run of bad luck with the stripers! 😝...haven't got shit the last 5 times I've hit the river /slews..I fish from about 6:30pm to about 8:30pm. Mostly top water. Rapala , yo Zuri top water. 5 1/4" 3D jointed crystal minnows, 5 1/4"rapala waking minnows, 6" diawa sp minnows. River to sea whopper plopper. Some shallow jerk baits 3-5 ft of water. Tried all kinds of different retrieves and got nothing. Even tried some small top water poppers ...Any advice would be great. Also how many casts do you give a lure before you give up on it and switch to something else ?
what areas are you fishing? the dog days of summer, even we get skunked at times. Just have to rethink your strategy and go from a different angle. you on the bank or a boat?

miller murdaugh Zillion SV! The chronarch doesn't have much over this reel besides weight. The SV spool is legit, look on forums and you'll see

Is this reel ok for salt water use?
yes. with basic cleaning and the occasional line removal to clean the spool, my own 2016 has been ok for 18 months now fishing estuaries. in fact i have a zillion coastal, '08 model, and i think the term coastal is a marketing hype, since most daiwas except for the MG steez, used by my friends and i work fine so far.

I wonder, why isn't Daiwa making any handles made out of Zaion? They claim its as solid as Magnesium or carbon why the hell not making handles out of it? There's ziaon star drags and knowbs... bring on the handles, daiwa

Angel I buy from ZPI, RCS, KTF etc all the time, there's no Ziaon handles. Star Drag and knobs is all you will find made out of ziaon.
