I absolutely hate that this song didn’t make the album. Having the privilege to capture it live, that’s just a memory that’ll never be forgotten. Sturgill’s talent is obvious in the performance, but seeing the performance live, that was just something else.
Sturgill may be a good imitation. But... Naw....Waylon was unique. Everything of Waylon’s voice came from deep down in his soul. It included every memory he ever had. It included whatever vision flashed in his mind as he sang along with his life’s dealings chiseled into the inflections within his words. You can never imitate that....ever. Thank “Howard” for all the recordings to keep his voice alive!
Absolutely outstanding, the beauty in a great cover is the fact that you can pay homage to the legends while putting your OWN spin on the tune. IMO he sounds nothing like Waylon he sounds more like SS working his magic on already magical song...

I watched the DVD last night. Waylon was one hell of a song writer. And while there are a few of those "why in the hell did they let so and so play that!" moments that all tributes have I'll be playing it many more times.
I can't stand when people compare him to Waylon and then say how he will never be as good as Waylon. SS has never tried to be Waylon and has done everything to make his mark in Country by being true to himself all while Nashville has literally done nothing but try and blackball him. He has never sold out and never will. SS is a BMF. Comparing SS sound to the Legend such as Waylon is as fair as trying to Compare Waylon Guitar Skills with Sturgill's. Waylon isn't worthy of holding Sturgills pic. Doubt that? You dont need to go far just watch Sunday Valley - Sometimes Wine.

Kind of but not really, there is this silky smooth layer to Waylon's voice, especially in the 70's at his peak, that Simpson just doesn't have and can't pull off...the deep part is there, but differently not the smoothness.

After listening to Waylon's version, I noticed that he says "From the memories" the first time then "To the memories" the second time, whereas Sturgill sings "To the memories" both times, and sounds like he says "money and the fame" ( Being a nerd here), A generation ago Waylon was my hero. Today Sturgill is my hero. They are both amazingly great
He has absolutely no desire to sound like Waylon nor does he attempt to make emulate his sound. Sturgill is a MILLION times the Guitar player Waylon was. I mean it's not even close. He has done everything that is possible to create his own unique sound all while staying true to REAL COUNTRY MUSIC! SS is carrying the torch for Country Music today. He is leading the revival of TRUE Country Music and has managed it without the backing Nashville. If you haven't had the privilege of SS then please don't take my word for it and see for yourself. There is reason that Willie, John Prine, and Literally EVERY Country musician has and continues to work with him.
