I went to Hutton years ago when I upgraded from lowly Eagle to T6, my first ever medium ship. I was so proud of it. I made the trip as a sort of pilgrimage. Bought as many mugs as I could. Then went to Lave to get some brandy to fill them up. Good times.
That feel when you first buy a ship outside of the beginner stuff is a very proud moment and you feel really great about your achievement. Even after you've played the game for longer and fly a Cutter or an Anaconda, you'll still look at your first major ship fondly and recall all the memories you made with it.
I went there in a sidewinder because I was super new and wanted to do stuff close to sol, realized how far it was when it took over an hour to get there and arrived on reserve fuel. Thank god for the fuel scoop lmao
A good place for beginners is LHS 3615. The station there sells 18 ships including the asp ex, Dbx, python and conda. As well as about 70ish percent of the modules and hardpoints in the game. And it's about 2-5 jumps from the newb systems. My friend found it randomly after starting a new cmdr on xbox.
You can search for them via the galaxy map filtering State to Detention Center and turning off everything else, though you might leave one other one on to make it easier to navigate the map.
Sadly I believed in that 'free' Anaconda, and all I got from it was the Mug that I ended up having to jettison to a NPC Pirate as apparently he really wanted that mug. This was when I first started playing a couple months ago, I'm now much wiser now even in that short time span for fall for that 'trick' again.
I think Hutton Orbital gets a bad rap, but I love it when someone asks for a good trade route. I usually tell them to sell Hutton mugs at Jaques Station, and sell Jaques stills at Hutton Orbital. I'm pretty sure one person decided to heed my advice. And yes, I have done exactly that. Back when the very first Colonia CGs were going on, and we had four weeks to deliver goods over that 23kLy route, I traded mugs and stills alongside the usual materials. Not too many people can brag about earning exploration Elite through trading, but I managed it. Probably going to earn combat Elite through trading as well, and trading Elite through exploration.
It's funny you mention that long CG to Jaques - that was the first week I got serious about learning the game. I remember thinking "what is this CG thing" and when I saw how far it was I thought "fuck that!" - I didn't look at CGs for months as I was sure they were all crap!
When in the galaxy map, check out the population. It's a good indicator of how well resourced the station will be. This is particularly useful if you're off exploring.
I lived in Colonia for a month with a player group before I stopped playing for a while and there are some things that people who haven't been should know. That is if you decide to go. 1: While not required, a guardian fsd booster is highly recommended and it saves a ton of time if you have one. 2: make sure you have a medium ship (ASP/Python type) left in the bubble for transferring modules as some just aren't sold in Colonia. 3: DO NOT EXPECT IT TO BE QUICK! It will feel like forever getting there and it can take you 2+ hours of constant jumping to get there, so taking breaks is recommended. 4: The only ships you should use to get there is an ASP or Anaconda. Once you're there, don't expect it to be like a stop at 7-eleven: Colonia is just like the bubble but smaller, and there is always plenty of work to be done. 5: Be very careful of player groups and under no circumstances piss one off. Including the one I was in, Colonia player groups are very powerful and with a high player to system ratio, it's very easy to cover a lot of ground and find someone quickly.

I've considered doing that Hutton run. I guess there's a mug or something you can only get there and it's sort of a bragging rights? Then I remembered I wasn't a masochist and opted out of that.
I'm at Wolher Terminal in the Kremainn system. Orbits a gas giant with many extraction sites in the rings. Relatively peaceful system, as well, so it rarely is disputed. Right next to the starting system, so it's pretty lively.

While I have a few places I find myself coming back to now and again, I do like to consider Lave Station in the Lave system my home - I make sure to keep my trusty Cobra Mk III parked there, just in case.
For exploration, I recommend "Morgan's Rock." It's out there but a must stop on the way out to the rest if the galaxy. BTW can you do a vid on the "Road to Colonia" stations? Would be sweet.
That's a great idea and added to the list. I recently reset my alt account so I could start from scratch for some of this but sorta wish I hadn't as I had Felicity and a 55ly DBX that would have been perfect for this.
When I visited Colonia, Jaques was on lockdown. Bit of a bummer. It was really just a stop over for me as I headed from there to Sag*, then back to Sol. Took me about 6 months to complete, but was worth it. Some cool stuff out in the black to see. Still a few % shy of Elite Explorer but when I hit it I will be moving to Jameson.

It took me 4 days because played w/ a friend all day and night, scanning every stars and planets (not more than 2.000ls, im lazy), I even went through the eagle nebula at the beginning, and the trip made me earn 230M credits. It would be nice to stop judging people you don't know.
I just spent a year in Colonia. It was a great place for expeditions. Just few neutron jumps away and you could find as much undiscovered systems as you want.
Not sure why but I've never been able to just log out leaving my ship in space without landing. I know that makes no logical sense but I just can't ;-)
I really appreciate this! I'm new to the game and I've been trying to decide on a "real" home system instead of just whichever system I've earned a lot of rep in lately. Space is big and I'm sure I wouldn't have found much other than the Powerplay capitals without a video like this. And thank you for being to-the-point and editing your video well!
Damn went to Hutton Orbital, Alas they have a backlog of orders for the Free Anaconda, So I have to return sometime later. I recommend bringing a large landing pad ship and just bribe ATC to land....... Then again I might be joking!
I like feyman station in Bhritzameno. It's near all other important locations and in the middle of the bubble. It also has rings and all the planets are close by with only one yellow star. Also has a nice ship selection and almost all modules.
I use Kamahendu as my main station, though the two Sirus stations sound good. Tip: To make going to and from Colonia easier, bookmark the Blue Star line stations on the way there and back. They are Kamahendu, Rohini, Gandharvi, and Kashyapa. All three have orbital stations, so you don't even need Horizons to use it.
LHS 20, Kamadhenu, and Rhea. My 3 homes. I run an EXTREMELY lucrative travel business, so travel hubs are a must for me. My true home is LHS 20, had A LOT of fun in and around Ohm City, not to mention the sweet 15% discount on ships and modules.
Bennett Gateway in Okinura: a beautiful station close to its star with lots of ships and upgrades available, and it's not in a locked system, so (unlike Sol or Shinrarta Dezhra ) there are plenty of missions both from and to there.
When I first started playing, I wanted to get to Empire space ASAP. The first Imperial station I ran across was Kopal Orbital, in the Tsim Binba system. It's been my home ever since. It's nothing special, but isn't too far from the Empire's home system, and also has a lot of REZ systems surrounding it, most of which are Empire aligned. It's also close to LYR systems, so if I want a discount, it's just a short hop across. Oh, and it's fairly close to its parent star, so no long SC journey!

I know this video is a few years old but I thought it was worth mentioning I’m looking at Jensen Gateway in 64 Ceti and Scully-Power Station in Ix as also being possible alternatives to Ray Gateway and Ohm City.
I didn't like how far the drive was to Fabian City from the hyperspace drop. I felt like I was wasting a lot of time driving 2k LS every time I wanted to go back to base. Also when doing Kill Pirate missions, you're always going to be sent to a neighboring system anyways, so having the hazrez right out side the front door isn't as useful as it sounds.
For Bounty Hunting there is a station called Mistress Lilith Memorial in Toluku System which is located right in an asteroid belt. The station offers Pirate Killing Missions (Massacre) and the nearest Mining Point is about 2Mm away
Scully Power Station in Ix is great as well. its has 19 ships to sell, almost all the modules you need, material trader, tech broker and because its Li Yong Louie it has 15% discount for everything. its 100 ls away from the main star and 2-3 jumps away from Shinrata Dez. ah yes and you dont get ganked every 2 minutes because it isnt shitraza dez.
Jameson is the choice for main base. But I have a base for combat, one for passengers, and one for thargoids, my 65 LY Exploration ASP is my taxi, trade moves around based on eddb
Me and my friends found the Baliunas Hub in Gende and we never looked back, it's nice when you drop back after having been away and get that home feeling.
When I was a starting player, I considered Eravate as my 'home' system. From there you can fly to so many different stations, engineers and do a shitton of missions in the process. But I will definetly check the other ones out now. ESPECIALLY HUTTON!!1!
There's a system called Adan, which happens to be my name, so I made that my home and act as if I am the mayor or something. Once fleet carriers drop mine will be there
Been away from the game for over a year, waiting until Beyond chapter 4 to come back. I largely just picked my home base based on a list now 3+ years old of stations near metallic planetary rings for mining. It's not a BAD station for outfitting etc, but anyway, this video helped even a seasoned player like me a LOT. Thanks!
I’ve been with Jameson for years. The only station other than Jameson that i used for an extended period of time was Abraham Lincoln Station. I say that to say that after i got Jameson, I can’t imagine changing my home. No matter for what reason. I just can’t get away from the discounts.
I've made I Sola my base until I get into Jameson. A question, do I need to be Elite in ALL disciplines or just one to get into Jameson Memorial? If I just need one, then I'm half-way towards my Explorer rank. I'll just run some road to riches routes for this week to get to Elite.
My home system is Narvert located near one of the far edges of the bubble and has many li yong rui systems nearby (even though im sided with hudson lol) all planets have rings and they are all heavy metal content planets with 2-3 g's! Has haz/high/low/regular res sites and has muliple planet side and orbital stations. Glidden enterprise is my home station. Its about 200 ish ly from sol Edit: 7 months after this comment ive changed a lot as a commander. Now that im elite in exploration, jameson memorial is my home station. My secondary home station is forbes terminal in Algorab (My faction: Sidewinder Syndicate's home station)
Ray Gateway is my favorite! Its close to Telin which is an excellent resource extraction system. Im open to other suggestions though for similar setups that might be closer.
Ive been to hutton its strangely rewarding just if you do make sure to stock up on their rare item mugs and read its description i found it quite comical lol
SOL system you have to be rank 4 Petty Officer to get the permit to enter the system. The fandom wiki for elite can show this and I have said permit and currently I am a petty officer. Ensign isn't required. Hope that helps!
I didn't make it my home, but I've gone out to it twice now and spent a few weeks there. It's an asteroid base in either the Heart or Soul Nebula. I forgot which. Beautiful place to just spend some time exploring.
Ohm city has been home for years. Has always had the discount, never fails. One piece of advice though is to know that the other major terminal in the system is controlled by the pirate faction that you've been slaughtering in the rez sites. If you need to go pick up a module or something, be prepared for a nasty surprise when you try and dock. Either run some missions for them in Ohm city to keep them from going hostile or do your rez hunting (etc) in a neighbor system.
I've made Sol my home system and didn't consider moving to a martian station. Orbiting earth is my kind of thing. Lately I have attempted the worst way to travel to Colonia. Went almost 200 jumps with 31 LY range before turning around after finding out about the neutron star boost. Currently taking a huge risk using that trick without AFMs
I made my first home on Tun. Only one station (Tun's Wart), close to arrival (~200ls) and most of the factions are Fed aligned. A little out of the way, but very good place to farm Fed rank, tons of high paying jobs if you get allied. Also, I think every good ED player should make the pilgrimage to Hutton Orbital. For the Mug!
I didn't make I Sola Prospect my home base however I did make the station that orbits the planet mine. It doesn't have every ship like I Sola but the outfitting is good and it has a decent selection of ships.
I used Irkutsk in Alioth as a home for a while, primarily for immersion purposes as i'm an Alliance supporter, but also because it's a high tech station with a lot of stuff for sale. It's also the place I bought the 'Voidwalker', my Asp Explorer that I've come to love as my exploration/getting around ship.
Jaques isn't such a great place for a base in Colonia... it's largely a tourist trap, lots of Belugas going in and out, and the locals stay away. Colonia Hub is the place to be in that system... it's one of the best outfitting stations in the region, but it's also a planetary base. The other good outfitting stations: - Carcosa/Robadrin Rock (asteroid base) - Kojeara/Tolagarf's Junkyard (asteroid, the raw material trader for the region) - Ratraii/Colonia Dream (close to star, the encoding trader, but no selling of exploration data) - Ogmar/Whirling (close to star) and Ogmar/Dervish Platform (no large pads) Coeus/Foster Terminal is a nice scenic megaship, however the outfiting isn't good, but it does have the manufactured material trader.
You've completely neglected most of what needs to go in to choosing a home station. I recently moved home, and these are the things I considered (1 hop = ~14ly): 1) Hazrez within 500ls (closer is better) of a star 1 hop so away; so that I can take missions from home base - kill pirate missions are generally 1 system away, so having that hazrez in your home system isn't so handy. Ideally that hazrez planet should have a station, for emergency repairs, and easy rearming 2) Interstellar Factor with Large pad within 1 hop, for convenience 3) All three materials traders within 1 hop of my DBX (~60ly) (inara has a finder for these, makes it a lot easier) 4) Around 8-12 populated systems within 1 hop, for mission variety 5) Centrally located to the distribution of Engineers 6) High Security (unless you want to be a pirate, then Low Security) 7) High population, high tech station for good shipyard and outfitting 8) Within ~100ls of hyperspace drop point I also made sure to book mark all of the things above for convenience (IF, Traders, Bounty Hunting grounds, etc).
You should stop by Gooch Vision in LHS 2106 some time. It's abit of distance from the warp in point and you have to reach around the planet on final approach as it sits closely behind the backside of its host planet and you go from the rear to gain entry. I'm almost certain getting there itself is a gooch joke, the faction I side with at the station has an obviously related "outreach/reacharound" style faction name as well. Outside of jokes though, it has quite decent outfitting, a large shipyard and is fairly close to sol.
I came to this video expecting to not see my home station, but there it is. Ohm City has been my home for nearly a year, I and a group of friends who I haven't talked with in a long while found it after some missions and decided to move there. We would gear up and run to the high asteroid zones, then run back if at low health and cache our bounties. My friend Preadths would run a PVP Anaconda that always impressed the hell out of me as before meeting him I had never really seen Anacondas. My friend Madjick would run one of the Diamondbacks equipped to kill, he was a very good pilot with that funky ship of his. The last person other than me was DeathSquad, who would run either an Imperial Eagle, an Imperial Clipper, one of the Asps, or a Vulture. He did very well in his piloting and was quick to get to the target. I, the last person in the group, was a proud Cobra MK IV pilot, and I still am. I wasn't the fastest to get there and couldn't survive well on my own, but I still had great eyes for spotting targets. I switched to a Vulture near the end of my journey with them, and I must say it was not the best ship for what we were doing. I don't really remember what made us stop playing, but I do hope I can get at least one of them to start playing again. If you for some stupid reason like wanting to kill me or meet me, I'm on Xbox as CMDR RealBandicute at the time of posting this, and I can be found either at Ohm City or in the surrounding systems. That wasn't free, it's only available to buy for lifetime pass holders or players who upgraded to horizons before a certain time. No one else can get it at all, and they probably aren't missing out. I suppose I should get it one day just for the collection, but the speed and manoeuvrability look horrible. Actually, thinking about there were free ships if you pre-ordered the game or backed the kickstarter. I got a free Eagle and a couple of paintjobs, but I can't remember what others there were. I pretty sure for one kickstarter level there was a half upgraded (mix of D, C, and B modules), exploration Cobra 3. I remember that because the first CMDRs to circumnavigate the galaxy both had them and used them for the trip, it took them about 18 months.
Big Papa Base in Andrehmi is my home station. It's in an asteroid belt, is really thematic and honestly is in a great shipping triangle with lots of bounty hunting to boot.
Carter port in Rhea is my home and it holds a special place for me. It’s the place that blew me up when I first started playing because I forgot to request docking and flew on in.
LOL I'm a newbie and someone trolled that there were barnacles out on Hutton, so I went. I wish it was only 45 min, it took me 90!!! :D At least I got my mugs and took a screenshot! :P
Glad to see Ray gateway was chosen as the 15% discount station. That's my current home base. I just wish more stations has 'dragon' or 'draconis' in the name.
I like Deciat as a starting home base. Lots of landable planets, mining resources, a boom economy, high security and a local Engineer who specializes in Frame Shift Drives (up to level 5).
Sol is a great place to make your base. Earth has 4 stations with ~1 light second of it, and Ive found a certain mission to a certain system that nets you easily 20-30 mil credits an hour for basically no risk (so far). You can 'board flip' by checking out the six big stations in Sol, with an added outpost and at least 3 planetary landings if you want
My home station changes depending on what I'm doing, currently I'm grinding rank in the empire so I've made my home in the Faust system. I had a flea carrier as my home when I was traveling the stars, but the tritium grind just became too much of a pain and plus I'd already made billions with exobiology. Now it's just combat and courier missions with a little Thatgoids action in there.
I have them all over the place. Except for one. I came to Ceos in the starting sidewinder and left with a Diamondback Explorer. Sidewinder will stay there for eternity as memorial
Ali Ring in the Kokojina system has been my home port for years now, but I'm seriously considering moving it, since Kokojina and almost the entire Alrai sector that surrounds it has gone into a major economic depression, with seemingly no trade goods available and widespread civil wars.
Early on back in 2015 I picked a home system on the far edge of the Bubble that had almost no traffic, so I could bring my exploration data back safely. Only other explorers went there. Later on I pushed the controlling faction to take over about 15-20 nearby systems. However, around December new player factions started appearing nearby and rolling back my home faction from some of the systems I had taken, and I left to pursue other goals.
Serebov Staion in Yakabugai has all the services we are used to, large landing pads and is less than 17ly away from every kind of material trader and tech broker. its around 300 Ls from droppoint and its very close to the starting point on the game. i recommend this station for people of all experience levels.
i usually dont spend too much time on one system. whenever i need a module or ship that isnt available in my current system, i look for which systems have it, and go to the nearest one that is not one that i have already went to
I’ve been chilling at Polansky Enterprise in G-181 6 I believe, farming federation rank to get a corvette then I’m going to migrate to Empire space to use my vette to farm imperial rank through bounties and finally get into combat as I’ve been mostly space mining, trucking, and bus driving so far
Beckman Station in Aphra is another good system for bounty hunters. Low res, high res, and haz res are all within mere light seconds of Beckman Station. If you are a new player this system is only a few jumps from the Erevate starting sytem.
Bernard City, Zoquagsang. It’s set on the very edge of settled federal space, and just a couple light seconds away from a haz Rez. It’s also not too far from Lave, which is cool.

That's the secret. You can buy Conda for 0 cr ONLY by delivering a mug to the Jaques. Contract rules..

I'm at Wolher Terminal in the Kremainn system. Orbits a gas giant with many extraction sites in the rings. Relatively peaceful system, as well, so it rarely is disputed. Right next to the starting system, so it's pretty lively.
Been my home for 3 years! I love Wohler. Could use more ships and outfitting options, but a terrific home base nonetheless.

While I have a few places I find myself coming back to now and again, I do like to consider Lave Station in the Lave system my home - I make sure to keep my trusty Cobra Mk III parked there, just in case.
For exploration, I recommend "Morgan's Rock." It's out there but a must stop on the way out to the rest if the galaxy. BTW can you do a vid on the "Road to Colonia" stations? Would be sweet.
That's a great idea and added to the list. I recently reset my alt account so I could start from scratch for some of this but sorta wish I hadn't as I had Felicity and a 55ly DBX that would have been perfect for this.

When I visited Colonia, Jaques was on lockdown. Bit of a bummer. It was really just a stop over for me as I headed from there to Sag*, then back to Sol. Took me about 6 months to complete, but was worth it. Some cool stuff out in the black to see. Still a few % shy of Elite Explorer but when I hit it I will be moving to Jameson.

I just spent a year in Colonia. It was a great place for expeditions. Just few neutron jumps away and you could find as much undiscovered systems as you want.

I really appreciate this! I'm new to the game and I've been trying to decide on a "real" home system instead of just whichever system I've earned a lot of rep in lately. I like feyman station in Bhritzameno. It's near all other important locations and in the middle of the bubble. It also has rings and all the planets are close by with only one yellow star. Also has a nice ship selection and almost all modules.
OMX STRIKE. Yeah, I've been using it as my home station for ages.
I use Kamahendu as my main station, though the two Sirus stations sound good. Tip: To make going to and from Colonia easier, bookmark the Blue Star line stations on the way there and back. They are Kamahendu, Rohini, Gandharvi, and Kashyapa. All three have orbital stations, so you don't even need Horizons to use it.
LHS 20, Kamadhenu, and Rhea. My 3 homes. I run an EXTREMELY lucrative travel business, so travel hubs are a must for me. My true home is LHS 20, had A LOT of fun in and around Ohm City, not to mention the sweet 15% discount on ships and modules.
Bennett Gateway in Okinura: a beautiful station close to its star with lots of ships and upgrades available, and it's not in a locked system, so (unlike Sol or Shinrarta Dezhra
) there are plenty of missions both from and to there.
That's my home base! Not super far from a couple haz res and anything I need is one jump away. Plus I love the greenery inside the station.
When I first started playing, I wanted to get to Empire space ASAP. The first Imperial station I ran across was Kopal Orbital, in the Tsim Binba system. It's been my home ever since. It's nothing special, but isn't too far from the Empire's home system, and also has a lot of REZ systems surrounding it, most of which are Empire aligned. It's also close to LYR systems, so if I want a discount, it's just a short hop across. Oh, and it's fairly close to its parent star, so no long SC journey!

I know this video is a few years old but I thought it was worth mentioning I’m looking at Jensen Gateway in 64 Ceti and Scully-Power Station in Ix as also being possible alternatives to Ray Gateway and Ohm City.

I didn't like how far the drive was to Fabian City from the hyperspace drop. I felt like I was wasting a lot of time driving 2k LS every time I wanted to go back to base.
Also when doing Kill Pirate missions, you're always going to be sent to a neighboring system anyways, so having the hazrez right out side the front door isn't as useful as it sounds.
That's where my Imperial Clipper lives while I use my Vulture to get easy money farming high res zones. Only another 80M credits required....

For Bounty Hunting there is a station called Mistress Lilith Memorial in Toluku System which is located right in an asteroid belt. The station offers Pirate Killing Missions (Massacre) and the nearest Mining Point is about 2Mm away

Scully Power Station in Ix is great as well. its has 19 ships to sell, almost all the modules you need, material trader, tech broker and because its Li Yong Louie it has 15% discount for everything. its 100 ls away from the main star and 2-3 jumps away from Shinrata Dez. ah yes and you dont get ganked every 2 minutes because it isnt shitraza dez.

Me and my friends found the Baliunas Hub in Gende and we never looked back, it's nice when you drop back after having been away and get that home feeling.
Beagle 2 is my home station... I started in Asellus Primus and I've been all over the Bubble but I always come back home to Beagle 2

When I was a starting player, I considered Eravate as my 'home' system. From there you can fly to so many different stations, engineers and do a shitton of missions in the process.
But I will definetly check the other ones out now.

Been away from the game for over a year, waiting until Beyond chapter 4 to come back. I largely just picked my home base based on a list now 3+ years old of stations near metallic planetary rings for mining. It's not a BAD station for outfitting etc, but anyway, this video helped even a seasoned player like me a LOT. Thanks!
I’ve been with Jameson for years. The only station other than Jameson that i used for an extended period of time was Abraham Lincoln Station.
I say that to say that after i got Jameson, I can’t imagine changing my home. No matter for what reason. I just can’t get away from the discounts.

I've made I Sola my base until I get into Jameson. A question, do I need to be Elite in ALL disciplines or just one to get into Jameson Memorial? If I just need one, then I'm half-way towards my Explorer rank. I'll just run some road to riches routes for this week to get to Elite.

My home system is Narvert located near one of the far edges of the bubble and has many li yong rui systems nearby (even though im sided with hudson lol) all planets have rings and they are all heavy metal content planets with 2-3 g's! Has haz/high/low/regular res sites and has muliple planet side and orbital stations. Glidden enterprise is my home station. Its about 200 ish ly from sol
Edit: 7 months after this comment ive changed a lot as a commander. Now that im elite in exploration, jameson memorial is my home station. My secondary home station is forbes terminal in Algorab (My faction: Sidewinder Syndicate's home station)
Ray Gateway is my favorite! Its close to Telin which is an excellent resource extraction system. Im open to other suggestions though for similar setups that might be closer.
Ive been to hutton its strangely rewarding just if you do make sure to stock up on their rare item mugs and read its description i found it quite comical lol
SOL system you have to be rank 4 Petty Officer to get the permit to enter the system. The fandom wiki for elite can show this and I have said permit and currently I am a petty officer. Ensign isn't required. Hope that helps!

I didn't make it my home, but I've gone out to it twice now and spent a few weeks there. It's an asteroid base in either the Heart or Soul Nebula. I forgot which. Beautiful place to just spend some time exploring.
Ohm city has been home for years. Has always had the discount, never fails. One piece of advice though is to know that the other major terminal in the system is controlled by the pirate faction that you've been slaughtering in the rez sites. If you need to go pick up a module or something, be prepared for a nasty surprise when you try and dock. Either run some missions for them in Ohm city to keep them from going hostile or do your rez hunting (etc) in a neighbor system.
Not really the best, but I live at Papin Orbital, Regulus system.

I've made Sol my home system and didn't consider moving to a martian station. Orbiting earth is my kind of thing. Lately I have attempted the worst way to travel to Colonia. Went almost 200 jumps with 31 LY range before turning around after finding out about the neutron star boost. Currently taking a huge risk using that trick without AFMs
I made my first home on Tun. Only one station (Tun's Wart), close to arrival (~200ls) and most of the factions are Fed aligned. A little out of the way, but very good place to farm Fed rank, tons of high paying jobs if you get allied.
Also, I think every good ED player should make the pilgrimage to Hutton Orbital. For the Mug!

I didn't make I Sola Prospect my home base however I did make the station that orbits the planet mine. It doesn't have every ship like I Sola but the outfitting is good and it has a decent selection of ships.
I used Irkutsk in Alioth as a home for a while, primarily for immersion purposes as i'm an Alliance supporter, but also because it's a high tech station with a lot of stuff for sale. It's also the place I bought the 'Voidwalker', my Asp Explorer that I've come to love as my exploration/getting around ship.
Jaques isn't such a great place for a base in Colonia... it's largely a tourist trap, lots of Belugas going in and out, and the locals stay away. Colonia Hub is the place to be in that system... it's one of the best outfitting stations in the region, but it's also a planetary base.
The other good outfitting stations:
- Carcosa/Robadrin Rock (asteroid base)
- Kojeara/Tolagarf's Junkyard (asteroid, the raw material trader for the region)
- Ratraii/Colonia Dream (close to star, the encoding trader, but no selling of exploration data)
- Ogmar/Whirling (close to star) and Ogmar/Dervish Platform (no large pads)
Coeus/Foster Terminal is a nice scenic megaship, however the outfiting isn't good, but it does have the manufactured material trader.

You've completely neglected most of what needs to go in to choosing a home station. I recently moved home, and these are the things I considered (1 hop = ~14ly):
1) Hazrez within 500ls (closer is better) of a star 1 hop so away; so that I can take missions from home base - kill pirate missions are generally 1 system away, so having that hazrez in your home system isn't so handy. Ideally that hazrez planet should have a station, for emergency repairs, and easy rearming
2) Interstellar Factor with Large pad within 1 hop, for convenience
3) All three materials traders within 1 hop of my DBX (~60ly) (inara has a finder for these, makes it a lot easier)
4) Around 8-12 populated systems within 1 hop, for mission variety
5) Centrally located to the distribution of Engineers
6) High Security (unless you want to be a pirate, then Low Security)
7) High population, high tech station for good shipyard and outfitting
8) Within ~100ls of hyperspace drop point
I also made sure to book mark all of the things above for convenience (IF, Traders, Bounty Hunting grounds, etc).
Where is your Home System then? In order to meet all of those requirements, there's probably only a handful that would fit the bill.
I picked Wolf 562, and have been pretty happy with it.
EZ Aquarii meets all those requirements. It's been my home base since I moved out of Eravate.
You should stop by Gooch Vision in LHS 2106 some time.
It's abit of distance from the warp in point and you have to reach around the planet on final approach as it sits closely behind the backside of its host planet and you go from the rear to gain entry.
I'm almost certain getting there itself is a gooch joke, the faction I side with at the station has an obviously related "outreach/reacharound" style faction name as well.
Outside of jokes though, it has quite decent outfitting, a large shipyard and is fairly close to sol.
I came to this video expecting to not see my home station, but there it is. Ohm City has been my home for nearly a year, I and a group of friends who I haven't talked with in a long while found it after some missions and decided to move there. We would gear up and run to the high asteroid zones, then run back if at low health and cache our bounties. My friend Preadths would run a PVP Anaconda that always impressed the hell out of me as before meeting him I had never really seen Anacondas. My friend Madjick would run one of the Diamondbacks equipped to kill, he was a very good pilot with that funky ship of his. The last person other than me was DeathSquad, who would run either an Imperial Eagle, an Imperial Clipper, one of the Asps, or a Vulture. He did very well in his piloting and was quick to get to the target. I, the last person in the group, was a proud Cobra MK IV pilot, and I still am. I wasn't the fastest to get there and couldn't survive well on my own, but I still had great eyes for spotting targets. I switched to a Vulture near the end of my journey with them, and I must say it was not the best ship for what we were doing. I don't really remember what made us stop playing, but I do hope I can get at least one of them to start playing again. If you for some stupid reason like wanting to kill me or meet me, I'm on Xbox as CMDR RealBandicute at the time of posting this, and I can be found either at Ohm City or in the surrounding systems. Actually there was 1 free ship and it was an insult, the cobra mkIV.
That wasn't free, it's only available to buy for lifetime pass holders or players who upgraded to horizons before a certain time. No one else can get it at all, and they probably aren't missing out. I suppose I should get it one day just for the collection, but the speed and manoeuvrability look horrible.
Actually, thinking about there were free ships if you pre-ordered the game or backed the kickstarter. I got a free Eagle and a couple of paintjobs, but I can't remember what others there were. I pretty sure for one kickstarter level there was a half upgraded (mix of D, C, and B modules), exploration Cobra 3. I remember that because the first CMDRs to circumnavigate the galaxy both had them and used them for the trip, it took them about 18 months.
Big Papa Base in Andrehmi is my home station. It's in an asteroid belt, is really thematic and honestly is in a great shipping triangle with lots of bounty hunting to boot.

Made my way to LHS 20 last night and made it my home base. Was staying at Hilmers Ring in Andlit for my first few days.
LOL I'm a newbie and someone trolled that there were barnacles out on Hutton, so I went. I wish it was only 45 min, it took me 90!!! :D At least I got my mugs and took a screenshot! :P
Glad to see Ray gateway was chosen as the 15% discount station. That's my current home base. I just wish more stations has 'dragon' or 'draconis' in the name.
I like Deciat as a starting home base. Lots of landable planets, mining resources, a boom economy, high security and a local Engineer who specializes in Frame Shift Drives (up to level 5).
Sol is a great place to make your base. Earth has 4 stations with ~1 light second of it, and Ive found a certain mission to a certain system that nets you easily 20-30 mil credits an hour for basically no risk (so far). You can 'board flip' by checking out the six big stations in Sol, with an added outpost and at least 3 planetary landings if you want
Katzenstein Dock in 36 Ophuichi is quite nice. It's basically Hutton Orbital for Large Ships...
My home station changes depending on what I'm doing, currently I'm grinding rank in the empire so I've made my home in the Faust system. I had a flea carrier as my home when I was traveling the stars, but the tritium grind just became too much of a pain and plus I'd already made billions with exobiology. Now it's just combat and courier missions with a little Thatgoids action in there.
I have them all over the place.
Except for one. I came to Ceos in the starting sidewinder and left with a Diamondback Explorer. Sidewinder will stay there for eternity as memorial
Ali Ring in the Kokojina system has been my home port for years now, but I'm seriously considering moving it, since Kokojina and almost the entire Alrai sector that surrounds it has gone into a major economic depression, with seemingly no trade goods available and widespread civil wars.
Early on back in 2015 I picked a home system on the far edge of the Bubble that had almost no traffic, so I could bring my exploration data back safely. Only other explorers went there. Later on I pushed the controlling faction to take over about 15-20 nearby systems. However, around December new player factions started appearing nearby and rolling back my home faction from some of the systems I had taken, and I left to pursue other goals.
This was a timely post. I have a fleet of 20+ ships. Going to pick one of these.
Serebov Staion in Yakabugai has all the services we are used to, large landing pads and is less than 17ly away from every kind of material trader and tech broker. its around 300 Ls from droppoint and its very close to the starting point on the game. i recommend this station for people of all experience levels.
i usually dont spend too much time on one system. whenever i need a module or ship that isnt available in my current system, i look for which systems have it, and go to the nearest one that is not one that i have already went to
I’ve been chilling at Polansky Enterprise in G-181 6 I believe, farming federation rank to get a corvette then I’m going to migrate to Empire space to use my vette to farm imperial rank through bounties and finally get into combat as I’ve been mostly space mining, trucking, and bus driving so far
Hutton Orbital is the "box of grid squares" joke of ED.
Beckman Station in Aphra is another good system for bounty hunters. Low res, high res, and haz res are all within mere light seconds of Beckman Station. If you are a new player this system is only a few jumps from the Erevate starting sytem.
Bernard City, Zoquagsang. It’s set on the very edge of settled federal space, and just a couple light seconds away from a haz Rez. It’s also not too far from Lave, which is cool.
