Dinking along side the video (fall 2023 vatting 23.05.11.06). I get a strong char, earth, tobacco and clove. This is one of the most unique Whiskeys out there. New Riff is my favorite distiller. *** You nailed the burning wood in a chimney.
I bought this because I love New Riff bourbon, and this seemed like it could have been awesome. It wasn't. It's not bad, but there is just nothing at all special about any of the favors individually or how they blend together. I'd give it a 5/10.
We won't be re-reviewing this one, but after letting it open up and getting the bottle down. It improved a good bit. So don't write off your bottle...but don't expect it to be a world changer either.
Maybe it's the column still, or the virgin oak. But there's something we are doing where most American malts need a little tweaking to bring out better flavors.
Dustin good points about cinnamon, totally agree. I definitely don't want it in scotch lol that's obvious (to me anyway) but i like it in balcones, love balcones! Mike, interesting point about peanut shell. I notice sometimes i get a taste i don't like and it's weird cuz it reminds me of something I do like so I try and psyche myself, but i see why it doesn't work, u get peanut cuz it's dry and dusty like peanut shells lol, i always have moments like that for good or bad, funny how we make associations. Atleast i assume that's the case
I bought my first single barrel New Riff and it had a taste that I don't like in bourbon. After a few more pours on different days, it got better. I'm looking for the "Winter" because some describe it as the "Glenmorangie Signet" of bourbon? Seems like distilleries are doing single malt whiskey lately. Did I miss the price on this bottle? Great review.
The TTB's in the process of accepting American Single Malt as a legal category, it really should be official soon. Until then you can get away with things... like Old Potrero, who used to put "single malt" on their 100% malted ryes. (Technically not wrong, I guess.) The best we have right now is "straight malt whiskey" which works like bourbon and rye: 51%+ malted barley. When the new category does become legal, though, it'll be 100% barley just like everyone else, and I would expect New Riff's making this accordingly.

We are fans of New Riff as well. We have a sherried offering coming soon.,

Interesting. Have their bourbon and rye BiBs and really enjoy the SiB SP bourbons, and like you say, soft and approachable.

Price was about 70, I think just under.

In Scotland, a single malt must be made from pot still whisky. The New Riff single malt is column distilled.
