It hasn't been the best week in our flying-fox world as young and experienced first flyers are really getting themselves into serious trouble.
Although barbed wire doesn't discriminate between young and old, it's still heartbreaking to have to euthanase littlies before they've even had a chance at life.
Two first flyers came in last week and both had been cut off the wire with scissors by separate members of the public who were only trying to help.
Unfortunately, the damaged caused to the wing membrane was not repairable and both youngsters had to go as per the conditions of our rehabilitation permit.
Please keep helping flying-foxes by calling them in and placing a box or a towel over them if it's safe to do so but it really is best to call and let a trained and vaccinated volunteer do the job for you.
Our services are completely free of charge.

I love the way they move their ears and those sad "puppy eyes"
Poor little sweetie. I feel so bad two others had to be euthanized. I hope this little one makes a fully recovery.
So sad to hear that two had to be euthanized. I hope that Willow makes a full recovery and is released with the other bats. Thank you for sharing this video and letting people know to call rescue and not try to intervene without any knowledge
Please call rescue! The best way to help is to call those who know how to save the bat! Support Tolga Bat Hospital and all the carers in between!☮️💜🦇
Were located in south east, Queensland and not in far North Queensland where Tolga is located.
Tolga do a brilliant job in their area but we’re also self funded volunteers that receive no government funding as are all the wildlife carers in Australia.
I hope Willow recovers ❤
Thank you for trying. Thank you for saving so many. ♥
The surroundings are definitely more exciting than that banana, and that says something. So sorry about that batty that had the terrible barbed wire fence situation 😞
She wins the prize for delicate beauty, she's gorgeous! And lucky to be alive.
Willow is one lucky bat... Too bad MOP were too eager with the others
Poor little one. So cute, love the little ears. Glad she was rescued but so sorry that two could not be helped. 😻😁😻
Oh my! She is really interested in her surroundings. And those ears just keep on swiveling.
Beautiful creatures. Thank you for everything!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Omg WHAT DID THEY DO. I can't believe it 😭😭😭
I might be missing some context here, but when is it ever a good idea to cut a wing membrane ? What were these people thinking ??
it's strange but I think a lot of people don't understand living bodies very well... especially non-human ones. I mean, our species struggles even to understand other genders and races are the same under the skin. I'm sure the same people who ruined those poor bats' chance at rehab would be shocked & devastated to know they in fact killed them. The road to hell is paved with good intentions :( I hope they heard about what they did, were shown compassion, but learned their lesson... As a whole we all could use much better education on what the world around us is truly like: that almost everything bleeds, dreams and feels panic & pain... Somehow instead that's hardly ever taught 🥀
@@skybug1706 I mean I get that but wouldn't be like cutting an arm ? That's obviously that's not good. When there's something I don't know about, I ask for help to someone who does. But maybe that's just because I'm an anxious person who has no confidence in her own skill and hates responsability.
Giving them the benefit of the doubt, they might have thought that because the wings feel like leather they're dead tissue (like leather).
Silver lining is they'll know better next time. Maybe they'll even replace the fence! That's super expensive, but after what they just did they'd probably rather the expense.
@Oceane1803 honestly I totally agree, I've just worked with/around animals long enough to realize MANY people really do not understand living bodies. They objectify animals. and what seems obvious to you and me - like something being a body part - is not obvious to them, they never even consider that it's alive the way they are themselves. It's hard to not feel mad & disgusted at them, let alone understand them, but a lot of the time it's cultural - if nobody taught you to recognize life for what it is, you don't know how to identify and honor it. There are so many people who own pets but have no idea that their pet is a living being that can express itself. I've met so many people who handle cats and dogs like stuffies and are totally blind to their own pet expressing discomfort through low ears, defensive positions, growling etc ... They are deaf to it. And they feel inconvenienced when told to learn the animal's signals or touch it more mindfully. People want animals to either be objects or be as discerning as other humans so they don't have to be mindful. You have to teach respect for life early. Sadly it's not common knowledge and it can lead to a lot of cruelty. I just also give the benefit of the doubt because I know these same people mean no harm, they're just ignorant.
@@skybug1706 I don't think I was ever specifically taught that, and yet it still seems obvious to me. Maybe it's my empathy I dunno.
Breaks my heart. People, take down your barb wire!
👍🥺💕
why the hell would someone cut a part of an animal?
im guessing if they saw a guy with his sleeve caught on a barbed fence they'd just chainsaw his arm off at the shoulder
Oh, that is sad. Let’s hope this littlie is back to full health soon😢😊😊❤❤
Poor sky puppies🥺 Hope they are enjoying the skies beyond🌈
Nice little pup with such huge gooooogly eyes💜

I am deeply sorry to hear about the two precious young Bats, who didn't survive ghastly barbed wire!😭🦇🦇💔 I am so grateful this precious Bat will survive because of trained Rescuers and Carers like you Mrs. Batzilla & ALL Rescue/Carers out there. Thank you so much for helping them.💕
You know one has to ask when a bat takes its first successful flight. What does it think?
Awww good luck darlin! 💝🦇💝🦇💝
Her gorgeous inquisitive eyes ❤❤❤
Those eyes...my goodness. I'm a puddle.
Poor baby❤️❤️❤️🦇🦇
She is a beauty, and so lucky to be with you. Willow has a future…what a face. Barbed wire is something I detest.🖤🇨🇦
oh my, my heart just melted 💛💚
I'm happy for Willow, and so sad for the other two little ones 😓 who in the world would think that cutting a wing membrane would be the right thing to do, that's insane 🤷
Hearing about euthanasia just makes me feel sick inside..
jeez.. I'd be really upset if I knew that no matter what I'd do to try to make them fully healthy knowing in the back of my mind that it's literally impossible and they would have to be put down.. I'd actually be breaking down badly..
😢 Poor babies. Poor poor babies. They are so extraordinarily cute.
Aww little one,,, hang on to that banana! God bless you batzilla thankyou, 😊😊❤❤🦇🦇

Please call the resuces to save the bats because bats deserve to live they are little flying foxes thank you for saving them ❤🦇♥️🦇
She's such a pretty girl.
❤️
That’s the one thing I don’t like about Australia’s wildlife laws, that the injured bats, etc., could still live a lovely life even if a bit handicapped, but they choose to euthanize them.
I'm sorry but how dense do you have to be to cut into a bats wing??? Poor two little ones.
Cute!
