Baby bat delivered by caesarean: this is Q's story

- Baby Q (Quintessence) is a Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who had an assisted birth after his mother fractured her spine. He was delivered by Caesarean.
He was very mildly premature and survived, growing up, healthy and strong, and fit for release 4-5 months later.
This video is a compilation of videos of Quintessence, from 2015.
Q's mum had a spinal fracture and was euthanased after he was delivered. He was put onto her teat to get her first milk, the colostrum, to get passive immunity from her.
Mum-bat was anaesthetised before the surgery, and euthanased after little Q was safely delivered. Her spinal injury was severe and unfixable.

they love grape fruit , melon , strawberies . and the know how much love and gratetute they have for the 1 helped them. they see her like a mother.they will remember it for ever.dont matter 5 years pass and they will fly to her.
I admire so seeing a large hand holding this vulnerable little creature with such care and gentleness. It is so beautiful to me.

Q is adorable and a modern miracle. Think of all the work to gain the knowledge to physically remove a fetus, that would otherwise die, and nurture in along in a manner that so mimics the bat species, that this lad will survive and flourish and hopefully one day help produce many more beautiful bat babies. Thank you for for all the diligence and thankless hard work you ALL do!
I wish we could say the same about human babies. I guess bat babies are more important.

It's not who is more important - it's what can be done with the resources available at the time.
If you want to make human babies more important than you perceive I make my bat babies, then go ahead. Nobody's stopping you.
@@gracelockhart6040 I think different people are called to help in different ways. If these batty rescuers found a human baby trapped on barb wire or tangled in fruit netting, I feel quite certain they would save that baby too, whether or not it had wings
I've never understood the "we should never, ever help animals, because there are humans who also need help" argument, it makes very little sense. It's just this weird guilt for the sake of guilt itself thing.

I feel the same way. I used to really dislike bats until she introduced me to the flying fox and no I'm loving them and think they are adorable!
For some reason, they've always been made out to be these awful, disease carrying animals. But, they are excellent at keeping insects down and have so many other benefits. I don't know why they are so maligned but they really are interesting, wonderful creatures!

The older adult males in care are really good with the babies. They recognise they are young and tolerate them and guide them. They also watch over them

I'm not a very vigilant observer but occasionally when it's obvious I notice stuff.
I like to go into a friend's aviary when she's there because it's like the difference between a guided tour of something and just wandering alone.
In the guided tour you get all the gossip and the hearsay and what people have said and done in this place.
In the guided tour of the aviary I am introduced to the personalities and the individuals - I get - well that's X and she always hangs out with Y - and they groom each other and they like to thumb box and scream loudly. And that's Z who is the gate guard - he announces when someone comes into the cage, and he has a specific cracked sort of voice so you know it's him.
And then the whole aviary comes to life, when before, they were anonymous and random bats.
Oh my gosh, this was so cute I cried. He was just so adorable. And Walter makes a good Grandpa.
So tiny and frail. How awesome you could save his life. He’s absolutely beautiful and growing up big and strong 💗😘

Kasper Fox they had to. Please do not say stuff like that like she killed she for kicks and giggles.... they take care of all bats and would have loved for mum to stay around but because of her injuries, she simply would not survive. Don’t be a fucking asshole dude. Just stop.
Miki, the mother wouldn't have survived - bats with spinal injuries die slowly from organ failure. Sometimes euthanasia is kinder than the options. At least her baby survived, which I think is a triumph.

5:52-6:51 So Meg. Our little story for Baby Quintessence ends with Q meeting and befriending Walter, who is extremely gentle with babies and never harms them. I'm very happily moved that you added that part to make the happy ending of this video.

Q may have been born into a cruel world but you and Mandi and all the others put so much love and work into saving these little creatures, it's enough to bring tears to ones eyes. Q is certainly one of the lucky ones, to have fallen under your care and Walter's watchful eyes. It really is a great thing you all do! I do so love the stories with happy endings!

Very special moments. What wonderful care he got. I love grumpy old Walter caring for Q so lovingly. Do males in the wild ever become caretakers or is this special? Awesome video I watched several times.
Males make the babies, but they don't have anything to do with raising them.
Having said that - in care, often a calm adult male is put in with the babies getting their first sun time and learning to climb around time. They seem to be more patient with them than an adult female.
Winny at the Shoalhaven, must heave a sigh of relief when baby season is past, so he can get some time back in with the other adults. He's very good and he looks out for the babies, stops them fighting for dominance. They eat better with him in the cage, and they seem more settled.
He also waits at the door for them to be returned if they're taken out for some reason - then he sniffs them and makes sure we haven't done anything untoward to them, then chivvies them back into his domain with the air of: "They're my responsibility now, just leave. You've done enough"

I wasn't there Brie, but I suspect mum was anaesthetised and was euthanased without waking her up - this is the usual way.
It may sound brutal, but to do a caesarean quickly is basically butchery. If you don't have to sew the animal up afterwards (i.e. if she's being euthanased) you don't have to be really fussy about being neat (which is faster). She was never going to be woken up again not even to see her baby.

Do they have to routinely euthanize a mother bat when they have to perform a C-Section on her? If so is it because of the difficulty a bat would understandably have recovering from such deep, internal, surgical wounds?
Oh my goodness! I never would have expected Walter to be so tolerant and gentle with the baby. 💜
The males are the most gentle with the babies. They have nothing to do with their care - they just make them and and leave the girls "barefoot and pregnant" so to speak. They don't have anything to do with them after birth either, but for some reason when we have the babies in creche or minicreche, the males are the most gentle with them. Some aviaries with permanent care (Mandi's Walter and old dudes, and Janine at the Shoalhaven's Winny) old boys find they are more patient than the adult girls with the new young orphans who come into the various creches, scared and uncertain.
Winny, at the Shoalhaven, gets this really resigned look on his face when it's creche time and he gets put in with the kids - like a weary grandfather faced with months of babysitting duties.
He takes his job seriously though - he gets in your face if you want to take one of the babies out to weigh and check it over - and he waits till you bring the baby back - then sniffs it all over to make sure it's OK and sends it to the back of the aviary where you can't get it again, then sighs as you take the next one out, awaiting its return.
My heart is melting for these beauties ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ awwww suckling on his dummy is too cute. Oh my gosh ❤️

Mom didn’t survive. It’s a shame she couldn’t have seen her baby just once but it wasn’t meant to be. Thank you for taking care of momma so humanely. She felt no pain .

Most interesting was the sheer size different between an old gent like Walter beside Q, he's massive.

That was both heart breaking and heart lifting. I visited with a friend this week who is having her first baby in a couple of weeks. I described how bats give birth and she's glad she will get off easy.
