Really enjoy your videos as I always pick someone to follow each year after hiking the PCT in ‘22. Wanted to belatedly share that the best way to “gently” get rattlers to leave the trail is by flicking water on them. Rocks & hiking poles only piss them off!! Water works every time. Also, your pondering on children & happiness, I think if kids have a good home where they can embrace the carefree nature of being a child, it’s easier to be happy vs the responsibilities that tend to weigh people down as they get older & have to take care of themselves. They also become more aware of others & comparison is the the thief of joy whereas I think children are too young to have the self awareness until their teens which is when the meanness begins.

Love the beautiful rattlesnakes *from a distance and so glad you're showing them! Regarding negativity, (which I see also), learning to BE PRESENT in the moment you are in, will help teach all of us to appreciate, love, slowdown and change our mindset. It's hard work to be present, stay present and focus on exactly what is happening at that moment. It helps, it seriously helps and you learn to appreciate that moment (you're alive, you are breathing, you are seeing, you are here). Be present.

It is easier to hate than to love. Real love requires revealing your true self and being vulnerable, which is difficult to do as some people are prone to taking advantage of other people who reveal their vulnerability. Children are vulnerable because they have no experience or being taken advantage of, yet. Man, you get so philosophical while you’re hiking, keep it up!

Damn that's a big Anker! Nice Rattler. I think I mentioned before, their striking distance is only about 1/3 to 1/2 their body length. Sounds like you are surrounded by some great hikers to help you enjoy your journey even more. lol @ "that was short lived". I like "New Boots Goofing". Chap actually pointed out where that came from. Love River Croosin, Road Crossin, Crossin, etc. You be you RR. Deep thoughts today! "Ich sprechen sie Deutsch nicht sehr gut." I think that's close, My mom was German.

Yeah, I’m curious to know what his base weight is, and food weight . Since he’s getting Achilles problems (which can be caused by all kinds of things, not just weight), I’m wondering if he should trim his pack weight. But, if he’s got an ultralight set-up AND great food set-up (efficient use of weight from caloricly-dense food), that would be good to know for tips for viewers. Would also be interesting to have an interview with him on how he was thinking of the logistics for the long Sierra trip that RR said he’s planning.

Great vlog, Julianne! So many things to think about. I posted something earlier about Tim Conway which, t appears, nobody understood. But you mentioned you friend Cheeseball and things like 'this here bridge rat dare.' and 'over dare'. I remember that from Tim Conway and Harvey Korman on the Carol Burnette Show. Yes, I'm old and you probably don't even remember Carol Burnett! But that's not important. Please keep using those phrases ... they're fun! At 38 I'm still a kid. Most people hate it 😐
Doesn't stop me from tge trampoline park, swingsets, etc. I always ponder why others don't embrace the inner child. When I do, it's very negative. They got married, kids, burdens, never had a supportive family growing up etc etc. Course that purely assumption. But very close while observing others through exterior.
Because MANY people had it rough, and that didn't stop them from experiencing THEIR life.

Enjoy when talk to and share with us. You asked a very good question concerning children and why we change as we grow. So many ways to view that.
Human growth and development is a complicated process and it doesn’t happen in a vacuum. That’s a problem. We learn that people judge our actions, looks, words, attitudes and blah blah blah … so it goes. It turn, children start. Look at themselves thru the eyes of their caretakers. That’s when they stop taking off all their clothes to go potty.
      I’ll just stop there.

Re: your thoughts on how we come to a negative state of mind despite entering the world innocent and “happy”. I feel like so many factors play in, but a major one is comparisons. Young happy kids don’t know about comparing themselves to others. Comparing ourselves to others, or to what societal “norms” are can easily take someone down a negative trail. It’s human nature to compare ourselves to others, and we often focus on those who we perceive to be better off than we are. Young kids don’t focus on what they don’t have. Just my 2 cents. 😊

Not everybody's childhood was laughter and smiles and rainbows and puppies. But for those who did have that, (I did not, I had a miserable, scary childhood) I guess just aging, and having to live in the world where you learn about getting a job, and paying bills, and car loans, and all that adulting is exhausting. It makes people cranky. So they forget how to smile and laugh, and there's just not enough of it.
    People need more puppies 😁

If RR hiked with Bougie through the first stretch of Sierra, then the standard approach past Olancha is Chickenspring, Crabtree, Whitney, Tyndall, Vidette and out Kearsarge.
So, given the 9 day lag, our intrepid RR might be going back in today or tomorrow to do the Mammoth section.
This part has Glen and Mather, the two most difficult and dangerous passes. Can't wait to see the vids.

I have a nephew who is currently on the PCT and I believe it was when he was in Idlewild. He was having problems with his Achilles his leg seized up on him. He went to a clinic and the doctor there who is also a hiker recommended he have physical therapy and she suggested that he change the type or brand of shoe he was wearing, and when he hikes to shorten his stride and maybe not walk quite so far in one day for a while. I talked to him this morning. He said his legs are great, not giving him any trouble and he feels fantastic. I don’t know maybe this will help your friend. Happy hiking.

Did she advise him to wear a slightly stiffer shoe, one with a little drop or both? When Road Runner mentioned Bougie’s Achilles inflammation I thought the same thing regarding his shoes, assuming he was wearing zero drop shoes. They aren’t for everyone in all conditions. Also, the longer your stride the more likely you are to work harder the parts of your leg that are more vulnerable to that circumstance. Stiffer shoes generally make you chop your stride a little.

Fun video with so much variety all-in-one! Ahh, the innocence of newborns & early childhood. Having worked in human behavior for 20+ years, I agree little ones are a "clean slate" - tabula rasa. We are curious and have just the most basic needs - air, shelter, sleep, water, food, & love. If just one need is not met, we'll try to compensate in any way possible (tantrums, alcohol, food, bullying, gun violence, etc.). Often, the "bad" or destructive behavior feels good in the moment (incl. anger, rage, physical abuse) but can be detrimental down the road/trail. I believe most kids are being physically kept alive but they are not being nurtured emotionally (i.e. Emotional Health) and that causes real pain. It doesn't take long before we're conditioned to expect [emotional] pain and we raise our guard preemptively.
I hope to start posting videos on my YT channel soon. For now, my videos are more physical wellness & backpacking based including injury prevention which Bougie may appreciate.

We enjoy your vibe and all of its pedigree. I think we live in a world of opposites. Hot/cold, high/low, wet/dry, etc. In our inner monologues the primary opposites can be described as Light/Dark, Creation/Destruction, Positive/Negative, or Purity/Corruption. I think that the way we interact with our fellow humans is greatly influenced by how we guide our inner monologue. They say not everyone has an inner monologue. That also explains a lot.

Children also learn to express discomfort or distress or unhappiness by crying and how you react to that crying is how they learn. If they learn Everytime they cry someone comes running, it turns into a reenforced reactionary behavior. We also don't know competition at a young age. All we know is plenty and being served. As we start learning we learn to do for ourselves. Part of the learning process is struggle and frustration which pushes the brain to figure things out, helps identify problems and solutions. The more we learn to compete with other people we learn how well we did learning our skills. Sometimes good. Sometimes bad.

Waaaay back in the olden days of the late 70's, I lived and worked in the beautiful town of Leavenworth WA. I made a "mocha" every morning. 1/2 cup cocoa then coffee. Long before latte stands on every corner 😉
    Morning mochas are the best!
    ...
The BBQ pork with Minute Rice makes a tasty meal too! I do 2 pouches pork with about 1/3 cup rice.
Also... spread bbq pork on a croissant! Get the croissant at grocery bakery and slice before you pack. Croissant can smash absolutely flat (especially in bear can) and are so good with BBQ pork. Also peanut butter and raisins.
    ....
Happiness and a positive attitude takes a bit of workout for the brain. Some people are more naturally positive. It is hard to be around pessimists, you don't realize the energy drain until it's drained. If you know what I mean.
    ...
    Love your positive vibe!

At 8:29 is Silvery Lupine (Lupinus argenteus). There are 32 other Lupines in the Kiavah Wilderness/southern Sequoia National Forest.
8:40 is Bigelow's Tickseed (Coreopsis bigelovii) older lists say Leptosyne bigelovii on the left with thin petals and California Desert Dandelion on the right. Native Californians would eat the very narrow leaves.
At 9:13 the short silvery leaf red flower is Northwestern Indian Paintbrush, Castilleja angustifolia (In older books C. chromosa) which is hemiparasitic on all those rabbitbrush and sagebrush nearby on all the slopes. They can make their own food on their own but they get water from nearby plant roots. Approach slowly to try and see hummingbirds attracted to the red flower bracts.

I love all of your sayings and your sense of humor itself! You have the ability it seems to really see the happy and good in things. I love this!
My answer to your question as a follower of Christ is sin is what messes things up. We live in a fallen world.
I think we have to choose to overcome evil with good - love one another, help one another. We are in an all out war behind enemy lines, and sometimes it wears on us, but God does remind us He is still with us - a beautiful sunset, a kind word, trail magic, a miracle, there is still so much good. Bad stuff still happens and sometimes things don’t seem fair or make sense to us. I hate to hear of what some people have suffered through - but knowing the ending - this is what gives me hope.
My Mom always told me as I was growing up - everyday you either choose to be happy or you can choose to be unhappy - but the choice is yours alone to make.
Keep trucking RR - you are in full on beast mode!!

Usually he comes to me so I can translate Spanish for him so it will be interesting the other way around for once! I am sure he will be happy! In reference to when you were discussing why children show more happiness as opposed to adults, I think it has a lot to do with environmental factors and entering adulthood and suddenly having to handle things on your own. That is part of why I enjoy teaching young children due to their optism and I love how they get excited for the simplest of things and their love for learning new things. I try my best to be positive and I try to choose to be happy. I think my faith in God has helped me a lot with staying positive and reminding myself not to worry about things that are beyond my control and remind myself that God is in control. I try and live by the motto I can do all things on Christ who strengthens me.

It’s the natural tendency in nature to take the path of least resistance. To do otherwise takes a conscious decision and will. Humans are fallible creatures, and will isn’t always readily available even if one is actually willing to make a decision to follow a path that isn’t the one of least resistance. And it’s often easiest to be bitter and angry and get pleasure in making other people feel the same. Just my 2 cents.

I believe we arrive in this world innocent as well; however, our spirit has a past history. The lessons we learn and experiences shape us into human with lots of baggage that may or not be ours. BUT we must adjust to survive the judgement given to us and we were taught. Self will is powerful but do we have the tools.

Auch nur so ein Gedanke, der mir kam als ich Dir zuhörte … well, here they were, my two cents. Happy trails!

Ich wünsch dir weiterhin viel Spaß, und danke für die tollen Videos, mit denen ich träumen kann, auch auf dem PCT zu wandern :)) Happy trails!! Matthias

It's not the environment so much. Well cared for children feel safe and secure. Adults often feel fear and insecurities which causes them to be distrustful.

The question of childhood innocence is attached to the belief of original sin, whether we’re all born with an indelible mark on our souls. It is a fascinating study, and a crucial one in understanding one’s relationship to God.- Mark

Sometimes religion makes people feel bad about being happy, or we people are shy to express it in case it makes others feel bad - speaking from a U K viewpoint. Sometime there an are few don’t give a, and are outwardly happy people - most of us want to be these people but often aren’t.
