on a track there's barely any traction issues with the standard CTR, nevermind the limited. The porky golf may have an all weather advantage on the road but in flat out dry conditions it was never getting close to the Civic.
Hi, I just got my new Golf R for my daily drive. It is amazing but I would like to highlight a feedback from an owner perspective. The Sport mode is very nice but the steering heavy and the hard suspension is really not the best for every day. Unfortunately the car does not allow me to set a default drive mode or remember my last drive mode choice. I could not see anybody realizing that! I hope VW release a software update! Thank you
I still don't understand why you don't test the type R again in better conditions, you tested it with a different driver on a slick surface....that is not a professional comparison
BTW, there was an Auto express test done by Steve with the Type R sportline The FOCUS ST and Cupra laon, wasn't it the exact same circuit? The Type R sportline laped it by half a second faster than the LE EVO lap time
Steve was going in a little hot, perhaps. And to be fair, it’s not a track car, never was. It’s a grown up hot hatch that you won’t be embarrassed to drive.
You can buy real Sportstyres from VW for the VW. With this tyres it will have annihilated the TypeR Limited (which also was equipped with sports tyres). On the road and on performance the TypeR is helpless against the R.
change the driver please and it will go quicker. In video it seems like somebody is driving first time this car and first lap on that... huge mistakes are made - terrible!
Wow, even with Steve at the wheel thing looked like it was driving on ice. Couldn’t stop or turn in. What a disaster those tires must be. Ok, the Golf R isn’t a track car, but VW cheaped out with those tires.
The amount of pitch, roll, steering angle needed is more like a Cayenne than a hot hatch. It might do the numbers, but this Golf looks about as enjoyable as dealing with a shite infotainment system. Oh wait….
This car is the result of all the dieselgate and investment into EVs catching up with VW. If the Mk7 and 7.5 are akin to the original Mk1 GTI, the Mk8 is the Mk4 GTI.
If it was lighter, less understeery, less interference with the safety systems and better tyres then it would have gone much faster. Please drive A45S round this track
How long have these been out for? I think I’ve seen 2 on the road. Compared to when the mk7 was launched and they were everywhere. I think buyers are put off by the infotainment, weight and cost. It just isn’t very exciting for the money being asked
In case you've been living under a rock, there's a chip shortage right now limiting the production of all cars. VW literally can't build the mk8s fast enough to meet demand, hence the huge markups right now. Dealers in the US are asking $50k for GTIs and $60k for Golf Rs.
@@headcoatee If they didn’t insist on so many touchscreens, they wouldn’t need so many chips! And I’ve seen plenty of standard mk8 golfs and even more ID3’s

But for £50k, your next door neighbour (who couldn’t care less about cars) can own a Tesla model 3 with significantly better performance. Golf R was a one trick pony that is now pointless
I think you've done the new R a massive injustice here personality. Look at the competition its beaten, the likes of the GR Yaris, FK8 and the clubsport Golf. Not bad to say those cars are far more track focused and the R had standard rubber.
Absolute joke of a car with the interior controls. Unreliable heaps. Surprised it's not much quicker than the Yaris with that Auto gearbox. Also surprised your Focus RS lap was so slow, mine feels quicker than my Yaris on track.
Again someone who thinks he would be faster with ESC off than with ESC Sport. You can even hear the slip when accelerating out of the curves. Also, the driver didn't quite understand the torque vectoring and comes out of the corners in a way that's actually worse. Of course I don't know how much time he took in tuning in the individual mode, but that takes a lot of time..... Why don't you go to the race mode, then to the special mode (Nürburging set up) and you come can't stop smiling. And when you're already on the race track, you put on the MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2, which can also be ordered from VW, and you can actually see the lap times tumble.

That's not a bad thing though, and is obviously what the market wants. Me personally? Not interested at all. I'd happily take a Type R and save 15k.
If you put a gun to my head and made me pick a Golf, it'd be a manual clubsport.
on a track there's barely any traction issues with the standard CTR, nevermind the limited. The porky golf may have an all weather advantage on the road but in flat out dry conditions it was never getting close to the Civic.
@EVO can you guys do the CT-4 BlackWing
Hi, I just got my new Golf R for my daily drive. It is amazing but I would like to highlight a feedback from an owner perspective. The Sport mode is very nice but the steering heavy and the hard suspension is really not the best for every day. Unfortunately the car does not allow me to set a default drive mode or remember my last drive mode choice. I could not see anybody realizing that! I hope VW release a software update! Thank you
Awesome. Go for smaller rims and get the P4s. Done.
It is fast for its power. Only 0.4 sec behind an M4 Competition F82.
Why the dsg is always in the wrong gear at the exit of a turn ? It doesn’t understand the driving style
How is it quicker than the clubsport S with the extra weight 😳
Rear wheel torque vectoring doing its magic
'a mile away from the type R'. May have lost a bit of credibility on that one mate!
Surprised how close the GTI is to the R
What are track limits?
those tires are aggressive all seasons on the R
I'm not a fan of Golf 8
But you’re not on the track every day and on a wet Honda is struggling with traction
Am I getting old or did anyone else mute the sound
Wow, 1550 kg.
The Type R sportline laped it by half a second faster than the LE EVO lap time
Great as always but you do have some severe sound level balance issues here.
Looks a handful that golf ! Civic all day for me i even like the looks now & I own a gr yaris cp 😍😍
Felt like the car was carrying a lot of weight through the corners
I mean, from the video it looks a mess? Massive understeer starting with the first corner? But what do i know.
Steve was going in a little hot, perhaps. And to be fair, it’s not a track car, never was. It’s a grown up hot hatch that you won’t be embarrassed to drive.
Wrong gear on corner exits.
Hankook are decent enough tyre but it would be black and white with a set of premium sports tyre.
You can buy real Sportstyres from VW for the VW. With this tyres it will have annihilated the TypeR Limited (which also was equipped with sports tyres). On the road and on performance the TypeR is helpless against the R.
Why the hell do they send them out on Hankooks?
Mine has the 19's like the car in the vid and came on Goodyears
God that looks terrible 😃 Expertly driven, but even Steve couldn’t stop it understeering everywhere like it had butter all over its front tyres. Yuk.
Time almost like Megane Trophy-R with for sure better tires.
change the driver please and it will go quicker. In video it seems like somebody is driving first time this car and first lap on that... huge mistakes are made - terrible!
Can't believe VW would do that with the tyres.
Wow, even with Steve at the wheel thing looked like it was driving on ice. Couldn’t stop or turn in. What a disaster those tires must be. Ok, the Golf R isn’t a track car, but VW cheaped out with those tires.
First reduce weight, than add power...
Understeer. Needs some better rubber.
Drive 5 laps and those tires will explode!
TypeR>>>VW
The amount of pitch, roll, steering angle needed is more like a Cayenne than a hot hatch. It might do the numbers, but this Golf looks about as enjoyable as dealing with a shite infotainment system. Oh wait….
This car is the result of all the dieselgate and investment into EVs catching up with VW. If the Mk7 and 7.5 are akin to the original Mk1 GTI, the Mk8 is the Mk4 GTI.
Those tyres are shocking. PS4S are far better option.
Surely at 10 sec into the lap, the laptime's invalid?! Wayyyy of the circuit.
Face facts all you VW lovers the Honda Type R is a much better car
Probably less problematic in the long run aswell!
True but the CTR is dog ugly
imagine being brand loyal
@@Keckegenkai indeed, sucks to be stuck with one brand.
@@tracktimevideos5164 Do you reckon! See I think it looks fantastic but different tastes I guess
No good tyres for the track
@@jamesstanley7263 The average new car uses around 140 semiconductors, it has nothing to do with the touch screens. VW are favouring electric and hybrid models to bring their global emissions down.
@@headcoatee
Exactly.
Also, dealers were practically giving the mk7 golf Rs away on finance (in the UK)!
@@ihavenousername1805 My point exactly! If they are not being given away ridiculously cheaply, nobody wants one. Golf R is all about spec sheet figures.
Missed the apex of T1 by approximately 7 or 8 postcodes.
I’ve seen people turn oil tankers more responsively than you turned that car…
Mk 7 is pure shit compared to golf 8 r as matter of fact all golfs are shit except for the golf 8 R.
But nobody above 30 wants to be seen in that Honda
Track limits on turn one? 🤣
Absolute joke of a car with the interior controls. Unreliable heaps.
Surprised it's not much quicker than the Yaris with that Auto gearbox.
Also surprised your Focus RS lap was so slow, mine feels quicker than my Yaris on track.
7>8
Problem with the Type R is it’s soulless engine. Sounds like a Vacuum Cleaner.
The Honda Civic Type R Is the better Car
Except in the wet or damp conditions
made him look scrappy,..those tyres..
You guys really don’t like VW products.
NO DEALER HAS THE GOLF R NOR ARE THEY LIKLEY GET ONE TO SELL THIS YEAR!...
Was an awful lap. Missed apexes, early braking and left it in auto so not right gear on corner exits….
The Honda was designed by a visual paraplegic.
Thats why they made the golf for people like you.
That impressive considering it a Golf, lets face it, VAG cars out of the box have never been track focused, would still have the Type R.
Stop talking (unless you get paid for it). Golf R rules the roost.
Golf 8 is such a disappointment they really might as well have not bothered and just continued with the 7.5, The Civic is vastly more enjoyable to drive .
🤢🤮every time he complements the Honda.
Your lap wasn't very clean
His lap was a disaster. Weird lines taken, missed apexes, not in the right gear…
@@grg88888 exactly my thoughts Greg
I think the Gti Clubsport would have been faster than the Golf R around the track.
The Clubsport S is on the timing list in the video - 2/10th slower. 😉
@@Fastvoice exactly..but I said the GTI Clubsport, meaning the golf 8 Gti Clubsport and not the mark 7 Clubsport S…😉
@@mercedakiask4359 The former (7) model was also named GTI Clubsport here in Germany so I couldn't know what you meant.
@@Fastvoice I live in Germany too. The thing is that in the video we see the mark 8 Golf R…and the second is that you said Clubsport S not Clubsport and the S was only by mark 7. anyway… egal 😐
@@mercedakiask4359 Ah - okay, I didn't take the missing "S" in your post into account. 😉
Type r fugly so I’ll take the 1 second lose lol
I really really want one
My 3 door Mk7 is a belter. It's a hot hatch. Who the fuck wants 5 doors?
It turns out most people want 5 doors which is why most manufacturers no longer do a 3door option.
I'm starting to have more and more problems with this kind of tests where cars are clocked on a track from the factory for lap times. Less than 1% of users of any standard cars ever go to a track or do give a rat’s ass about laptimes. Nice to show that you guys can drive fast on a track and good for your egos, but these cars are bought for the looks and the driving pleasure. please focus on that.
