Armando Alves I think this was more about two cars built off the same platform in their hottest form, a rivalry within one company. with different configurations, and like he said at the start, the golf R being quite highly praised they were seeing if it could punch above its weight. And at the end of the day, the less powerful, cheaper golf was faster and more enjoyable so it was a worth while test because it wasnt obvious who the winner would be. doing the RS3 vs A45 is more obvious but also slightly different

It's a fair comparrision. Very similar although I don't think audi tts and golf r buyers are the same. One you can use every day. One you can't. Me I'm waiting for the TT RS. And to be honest if I can afford in it a few year a R8.

Is it me or does everyone and their dad drive a Golf R? There are so many on the roads compared to the mk6 R and mk5 R32 when they were released.

TheEryk03 I think EVO are getting worse. In one sentence this guy said you can feel the rear axel on the Golf R starting to play, then 30 seconds later said the exact opposite. That Golf is impressive but how can the brakes in the RS3 get hotter and still lose. More generic journo guff.

+Andrew Miscevich it might well. I recently took my wifes r32 for a fairly long drive. Was looking forward to some exciting driving. However, i found that during the whole day there was only about two times i could actually get the foot down and then only briefly. The roads were too busy. Makes you wonder if you need a fast car!

+winzfeld1 actually, where i live in scotland we have hundreds of miles of near empty roads and lots of opportunities to enjoy them. That day i was heading for the city and the traffic was terrible, so it was a bit of a bore.

The RS3 is just entirely better in every way. They both start from a similar point (MQB-based Golf) but the RS3 gets that 2.5T gem, better AWD, better transmission, better brakes, better suspension, and yes, the better/higher quality interior.

So you would choose to spend more than $12k USD more for a car that doesn't match up at the track? You can literally put less than $1.5k of mods into the golf R and it will blow the RS3 away in a straight line.... APR stage 1 tune for golf R is an extra 80 HP for only $800.
You'd still have $11k left over in savings with the Golf R... you're paying $12k more for an Audi badge... lol

Golf R eats RS3 value for money, and performance all round. Throw on a stage 1 or 2 from apr, still a lot cheaper than the rs3. Golf R is the benchmark hot hatch, period.

+Hariz Hafi That's the major part they didn't account for, in my opinion. Audi doesn't just put on a nice badge and add a couple of horsepower. The interior is much nicer and there's a lot of convenience/luxury/options that simply aren't available for the Golf. Whether you're willing to pay for it surely is another story, but just boiling it down to which is faster on track is a little bit unfair.

They didn’t account for it because the video was literally based on its performance. It’s like me saying the Focus RS is better than the Golf R on track, and saying it’s unfair to the Golf R that I didn’t touch on its superior interior quality. What does that have to do with the video at hand?
The excuses you Audi fanboys are making for the RS3 are so laughable. It lost. Simple as. Many people have said the 7R was a better car than the 8V RS3.
just goes to show the difference between the perception of professional reviewers like this gentleman and an average driver like myself. I test drove a 2016 RS3 today and I was absolutely gobsmacked. Unbelievable car.

The RS3 doesn´t feel faster in a straight line? It is a second faster to 100Km/h. It uses the same chassis with wider front tires 255mm compared to 235mm rear rubber to make the car more balanced. 30 Kg more weight ^^ forget about those 2% of weight disadvantage. And about the Audi S(port)3 it shouldn´t be as sharp as a Golf R(ace) obviously....Audi bashing at its finest. And for everyone thinking I´m an Audi fanboy, although I like audi I do understand facts. havning driven both An Audi S3 and a Golf R apart from the softer suspension in the S3 they can´t hide their relation in the way they drive.

vivalaphill I don't think that the Audi is a full second faster to 100km/h, both the Golf R and the Audi S3 (with the DSG/ S-Tronic) are doing it in about 4.5 or even 4.4 seconds stock, despite the claimed times by the manufacturers. Audi claims that the RS3 does it in 4.3, it probable can do it in 4.1 seconds, it is indeed faster by a significative margin, but not 1 second.
vivalaphill One reason, the 5 cylinder peach, amazing sounding engine with huge tuning capability already proven in the MK1 Rs3 and ttrs. Golf r sounds like a frog farting in comparison.

golf r every time for an everyday car. it just hits the sweet spot and feels balanced in all ways. I have looked at 'upgrading' but haven't seen anything that ticks all the boxes like the R

Once I'll be old enough, Im'ma buy the GTI, R, and the RS3 in that order. GTI is my dream car though. And I know it has less hp and it's FWD, but it's more iconic. And most importantly, I'm a VW fan.

Not necessarily. They may have the same underpinnings but it doesn’t mean they have the same modes or setup. The Golf R is a better car dynamically. Many have said this.
Good review guys. I wish you guys could review the 6 speed manual version of the R. The bigger 2.5 litre engine does hold the RS3 back quite a bit - tends to understeer too much.
With the conclusion of the vid aside, fantastic review. Well done Dan -- especially if you wrote the script yourself. :-) Great transitions and flow. Mostly, auto reviewers make cliche statements and fail to disclose the 'why' in detail. Great, nerdy detail of the strengths and weaknesses of both cars in terms of *driving dynamics*. I'm very critical about automotive reviews. I cannot say enough good things about this one. Short, simple, to-the-point, and even the video editing of the hot lap comparison was done right. A+
It's sad to see the comments below. These are the people that, unfortunately, force manufacturers to make decisions that produce more A-to-B vehicles, not drivers' cars. Some people below don't understand that if two cars share the same platform or have the 'same' haldex awd system, it doesn't mean they should handle the same at the track. Suspension tuning & chassis setup is where engineers have to make the most noticeable, thus the most critical compromises. And these two things are clearly not the same on both cars. I love Audi but do not like its pigheadedness. If only Audi had the same head while designing all of its cars as it did with the B7 RS4, current RS6 and the R8.

The RS3 isn't made for tracks or twisty roads, it's just a quick, practical, everyday driver. And there is nothing wrong with that :)
In those last shots of the Golf R taking corners, it looked like the rear axle was definitely rotating the car nicely out of the apex.
I prefer the the Bmw M135i with x drive.
Why? The BMW puts a bigger smile on my face and you can´t put a price tag on that

Agreed. I bought the new 135i (rear wheel drive) and i dont regret it one bit.
As everybody else is saying, the x-drive system is not a performance AWD system like, say, something you'd get in a Porsche (not that I'm saying to go for an AWD Porsche over a RWD one). The RWD BMWs are the performance versions and the AWD ones are just for added safety in inclement weather, not for added high-performance grip.

Absolutely love driving my 10 year old R32 with sport Haldex controller on the road with the usual restrictions but corners are good and roundabouts can be fun !

Actually....... I've tuned the rs3 dsg and Golf R dsg and Rs3 shifting points are slightly more reserved due to torque and hp so what old mate is saying in the video could be correct.

The RS3 has a smooth and silky engine, strong DQ500 gearbox and lovely interior. Plus an aggressive Haldex AWD that reacts much quicker under acceleration than the S3 or Golf R. So that's where extra $$ goes!!

Mihnea Radu Listen to this!! First the Clubsport S took the World Record at Nurbergring with a Laptime of 7:46.. Then the Normal Clubsport you see at my channel did it on 7:42... (Yes iknow most credits goes to the skilled driver of course!! :)
HotHatchTV Off course not, since Golf R is 4WD. R is faster & safer on a straight line. But Clubsport's are faster on curves/tracks. The 4WD adds some weight & the Clubsport is aboutnpeeling of about as much weight as possible. It becomes extremely clear on the S model, where they removed the backseats for weight saving.. But imso happy i went with the normal Clubsport oz i choosed full leather seats & would felt like iv been robbed if i payed for something which dont exists.. Also the Clubsport S is just 20 hp faster, but know in reality it makes for way more. The must be a reason for price differance. I payed only the same as a normal GTI for the Clubsport hee in Sweden. Topped it of with around 6300 usd in extras... Check it on my channel if you wish! :)
Summary of almost all recent journalists review of hot hatches: blah blah blah, this car is ok, blah blah blah, but the golf is better, blah blah blah.

Great video and a fascinating outcome. I think though that the main component in whichever car is faster is being overlooked somewhat. The driver. A skilled and committed driver makes whatever car he or she is in the fastest from A to B on a typical British road should a race situation develop. Especially in two closely matched hot hatches. 👍

Clearly guy wants all cars to slide ..his main issue with both cars. Get a bmw. Safer and more steady car is better then one that slides whenever you go fast and turn corners. 9/10 people will never race it on track.

It is merely not about braking fluid, the issue is the chassis, which is not allowing speed to be carried through the corners. So to correct this issue, heavier braking is applied.
These motoring journalists spout some absolute nonsense. Who gives a crap about how a car performs on track. Surely it's about everyday driving ability on the road.
@Andrew you can't push cars like these to their limits on b roads, without being a dangerous anti-social arshole. Always being able to stop within the distance you can see in front of you, isn't possible when the real world is adjacent to the road.

With alloy control arms and a decent rear sway bar, the RS3 improves significantly in terms of handling. I have owned both and they are a lot of fun but with the RS3 moving back to 4cyl in its next form, I will probably be going back to a Golf R
I have driven both of them and everyone who thinks that the audi isnt as enjoyable as the golf r is just wrong.... I dont know but this driver isnt the right person to review it. If you just see the video from autocar with the stuntdriver at the wheel, then you can imagine that the rs3 will make fun.

I'm sure they are both really nice cars but I don't get it. For the money, if a person wants something faster / sportier, there are so many other options out there. These cars are like those SUV's that try to be sporty. Just winds up being more expensive than it should be.

So, 4 and a half years later, it turns out that the winner was actually the BMW M140i. It costs the same as the golf, but has the performance of the RS3. Plus it's more fun than both of them put together.
And it's a 6 cylinder, has a better engine, faster, sounds better, rear wheel drive, built by someone who knows how to develop a chassis and... is also lighter than both of these cars.

I love my 2016 Golf R!!!! It does everything right. It has no where as good a soundtrack however as my 2004 R32 did. Nothing like the sound of that VR6. It does handle far better however and transitions very very well through the turns.
why did you sell your r32? you could of have just tuned it.
Completely different cars. The Golf R will have the R32 for lunch on a back road with lots of sweepers. The R32 however fully worked will have the Golf R for lunch on wide open roads. Completely different animals. Where I live, back roads rule more than open highways. With all that said, I miss the R32. Of all my cars, it was my favorite!!!!!
Ok we get it, you like the golf. You could drive an R8 and your review would be no different.
If you can't feel the Golf R transferring the power to the rear then you're not driving it hard enough. After years of having front wheel drive cars, I can feel my R pushing from the rear on exiting a bend and on one occasion when I REALLY gave it some, I felt the power going completely to the outside rear wheel - a very weird sensation but the handling is epic!
I find it helps to get on the throttle earlier in the corners than usual.

It’s hilarious to witness. I’ve seen another video state the Mk7 Golf R was a better driver’s car than the RS3. They just don’t want to hear it, people who have driven neither.

That is all.
On a different track, with longer straights, it would have smashed the Golf.
It's also a much nicer place to sit, better equipment, and much faster in a straight line.
I'm not a big fan of either car, I'd much rather have my remapped M140i, which is faster than both !

The RS3 is stil lame though its nose heavy and FWD bias system thats why the golf won
This is by far best review i have ever seen. Not to say i would buy any of those since a brand new 328i cost me the same as the R and i still dont regret it. yet i have own gti's before and a4 v6's before. and would never, ever ever buy them again. yet the review was amazing. a bit more should have been said about audis interior but i rate 10/10 to this review. Thank you.
Going to save my money and get tier 2 mods to get 0 - 62 under 3.8 secs and still have money for paint before reaching base price of Audi but both are beautiful
