Many people don't tealize the substantial change in elevation around S-F when they see cars racing on TV, but the bicycles make this quite clear. I will never forget riding a bicycle to the beach in Wassenaar, Holland. It was a short 15 km ride, or so, in an absolutely flat landscape. But suddenly the road began to incline upwards, and upwards, and wind left, to right as we huffed and puffed on old bikes (mine had very low tyre pressure), and it felt surreal. Then we arrived "on top" to realize to our amazement we were at sea level. Looking back towards land, with out heart rates still high, it became abundantly clear how the Netherlands became what they are now. Had we been on the backseat of a car, we would have never felt the hill, and the realization may never have happened.
No because they’re still taking significant amounts of speed as a moment of the grip of their tyres. If they took the corner at a more sharp angle, they’d become traction limited as a function of the width of their tyres, and have to slow down and, more importantly, lose momentum. You don’t want to have to turn the handlebars too excessively if you want to keep up your momentum.
Interesting that they used the actual full modern circuit instead of getting to the end of the Kemmel Straight and taking the path of where the original 14km circuit went. Instead they lap most of the "modern" circuit and leave back out the point where the modern circuit joins the old circuit down at Malmedy.
@@Dephaude Yeah that's right. Historically, Eau Rouge used to be much bigger and went further round to the left, into a hairpin. They got rid of the hairpin and most of the Eau Rouge corner when they built Raidillon.

First of all, after racing on this track in games for years, I’ve never realized how long and wide this track is if you were to take it on a much slower pace. Second, it feels weird to see spectators on Eau Rouge to Raidillion and on the rest of the track in general.
