  • With so much carryover from F1's 2020 rules for 2021, it should be another Mercedes walkover, right? However, there are enough changes that have caught the attention of F1's dominant team, and some key areas it needs to put a lot of effort into - as well as new rules in place that will ultimately restrict it in some of the areas it has been able to excel in recently. As Scott Mitchell explains in this video, Mercedes probably won't trip up, but it will have to change a few things about the way it works at the very least.

Every team is “worried” because no cars have been around a track... and that includes Mercedes. But. It speaks to the desires of “certain” spaces where F1 content is produced to forget that while other teams - especially RBR - consistently brought upgrades to their cars during the 2020 season, Toto Wolff and Allison said Mercedes devoted zero time to developing upgrades in 2020, as their entire Brackley team was devoted to -- 2021. So, while all other teams were scrambling to catch up with a year-old Mercedes (which, hopefully helps people understand why everyone in the Mercedes camp was worried about their direct competitors), Mercedes was... in the future.

The most important thing you said is that Mercedes stopped development all the way back in August. This allows them to do a chunk of 2021 development without the 2021 restrictions. Plus, developing parts to bring to testing is expensive. Not following the rest with fielding 2021 parts during testing just kept more money on their pockets. Nice.

( bar the dev freeze for the cars installed in 2020) the freeze got lifted on 1st of January 2021, so i think last season all top teams put in the effort to produce upgrades and updates for this season so they can focus 100% of the dev on the 2022 car.. not meaning we wont see any in-season updated but i think they will be limited because this is an interim year.. there is going to be little change unfortunatly

The wind tunnel reductions won't really affect Mercedes. With Mercedes and Williams now forming a close technical partnership, the added wind tunnel runs for williams will only aid Mercedes. I think th biggest issue for them is the budget cap. But they'll easily find the loop hole, so can't imagine 2021 results will be too different from 2020.
