I don't get why Peon acts like bonds and wow tokens being exchanged for IRL money makes it so that the in game currency will get mapped to a real life currency. In a free trade game, there will always be a real life currency equivalency, and without a doubt, there will be gold sellers for a game like this. I think the best way that a game can make it fair, so that they aren't profiting off of the players, is to make the in game currency trade-able like a cryptocurrency for IRL money.
Regardless there WILL be gold sellers, at least this way makes it secure and easier to track.

What I don't like about Ashes of Creation is that it will likely end up being a guild or alliance of no lifer guilds that dominate the server, since a chunk of the end game content will be PVP based. You will have an influx of players at launch but the game will bleed casuals, the life blood of any MMO, as time goes on. I hope this isn't the case, but we will see.

    • @scubbasan

With sandbox economy, its impossible to keep playing on the same server forever like in wow.. Soon a large guild dominates the server, and everybody waits for a reset. Its a game of server cycles.

True Pvp is a joke anymore in most games that have it. The streamers and trolls and no lifer people. Plus, its not about who is better at a game, but who can abuse things to win aka win no matter the cost. Also, a huge Marketing thing is BIG numbers of players but honestly. That never has been fun not 1 time in ANY mmo. Its always been more fun to have small groups maybe 5 or 6 at most and then all your actions actually matter and can affect what happens. I don't hold much hope for mmos until AI is making and changing most of it LIVE.

I keep thinking how bad things got with Archage where for $500 USD you could get plenty enough gold to get fully max'd out endgame gear and while that seems like a lot of money, when i was paying a sub of $12-15/mo for multiple years trying to min max ever labor point and turn it into gold so i can 'properly earn', show up to every daily and weekly reset raid for multiple years just to creep my way up slightly with the non-tradable easier to obtain gear; I could easily have just worked a fulltime job for a week and bought the stuff the endgame was using.
But thats half the reason AA failed; the other half was that the people who could afford to swipe were able to obtain that gear and they created a toxic society of pure-pvp players that if you didn't pvp you didn't matter, didn't get payouts from raids, and instead of going after server progression on daily/weekly content, they would make it their life mission to make sure the other faction could never score a win on a rare/high value boss. Im just rambling here but maybe they could do a hybrid system where you have a tradeable currency which is used for basic things such as low end mounts, purchasable crafting materials, non magical level based weapons, common house decorations, ect. But for anything premium or end game it uses a non tradeable currency like black desert that the player would have to attain. You also could have 2 or more of each of these currencies used for different things.
Its not a perfect solution like lazypeon said but it would require less long term maintenance and enforcement. I also appreciate that the more time someone plays the more in game rewards they should be able to get. However it would be nice if casual players could at least earn a min/max of certain currencies or reputation while offline. Many other mmorpgs have done this like project gorgon where you can log out near an npc to gain small reputation with them. This could be done for currency as well.

Since reaching max level in Ashes will take a very long time, the devs should prevent trading until players hit max level, except for basic items like health potions and only with friends, with strict limits. Essentially, everyone levels as an Ironman-no trading, no gold transfers to alts or low-level friends.
Additionally, the game should be a $30 one-time purchase with a $10-$15 monthly subscription. Each account should be tied to a unique motherboard and phone number. Players who accurately report bots and RWTs should be rewarded with titles, cosmetics, etc., encouraging the community to help ban offenders.
This forces botters and RWTs to repeatedly buy the game, use unique hardware and phone numbers, and level up to max-a process that takes time and exposes them to bans. The hassle, cost, and risk will significantly deter them. Getting caught buying or selling after reaching max level results in a permanent ban with no exceptions.
But I think there's a bigger concern for this game as others have stated: "Mega guilds are going to run servers and burn them to the ground" & "Only a select few will get actual rewards and the rest will just be workslaves to fund the top guild leaders just like IRL"

If PVE sucks, as in, it does not provide a rewarding experience where you can grind dungeons/raid/world bosses over and over to get increasingly better gear score, then this game will fail. PVP is great, but cannot sustain an MMORPG on its own. From what I've seen so far in the videos covering this game, it's very VERY PVP focused, to the point where I'm predicting that this game will not succeed.

    • @Torchlight_Studios
      @Torchlight_Studios 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

The game is PVX with a big focus on PVP, this is not WoW; there is already that available to play. The best gear will not be dropped from dungeons/raids etc anyway. Crafters will make the best gear, so no there will not be a grind for BIS running the same boring dungeon 1000's of time game loops. The game is not being made for a broad audience it is for a specific MMO player and you may not be that type.

5:10 You just described the pitfalls of unfettered capitalism, too. Weak fines are just avenues for whales to break the law legally. As the gaming industry becomes just another investment platform for billionaires, we will see art not only reflect the money-hungry culture that made it, but embody it. The only answer to combatting gold selling is to get rid of gold, get rid of tradable resources altogether. And that probably makes for a poor MMO.

  • @nerdonabudget

Ashes of Creation is going to come out whenever it comes out, and still look like something that should have released 10 years prior. The graphics, animations, combat, etc, doesn't scream an MMORPG that is launching in the mid to late 2020's. It's looking like something that came out in mid 2010's, and I don't see any amount of polishing from now until release changing that by much. I'm a huge MMORPG fan, been playing them for 20 years, and I've seen enough of them come and go over the years to feel very questionable with Ashes. I'm thinking it has a honeymoon period for half a year to a year, and then completely drop off. I'll be playing it on launch, and hopes it succeeds, but will definitely manage my expectations.

This is your concern? My concern for the game is that every PvE player with 2 working brain cells will avoid the game like the plague. This will lead to low player numbers. Sure all people are hyped about it but I think it will lose a lot of players soon who didn't have 2 working braincells and thought there is enough PvE only content. For the RMT... there are PvP centered guildes already that allow players to join only if they RMT because it was nowhere prohibited in the ToS. AoC is a mess if you don't look at it with hype tinted glasses. Sure I could be to pessimistic about the game and the state of it but having only ~20% of the dungeons instanced for example will tilt a lot of players fromn the face of the world.

From what I remember, Intrepid already took the stance you were mentionning. Extremely harsh penalties on gold buyers, setting up "honeypots" to catch buyers/sting operations, etc. You nailed it, that is the way to go. Even if it's "only" a 50% chance to get permabanned if you bought gold, you'd drastically cut down the people who just buy gold because they know the risk is 0,001% of anything significant happening.

Want a game before 1999 with RMT? Simutronics games (e.g., Gemstone 4 and DragonRealms) had this problem by at least the mid 90s. These were MMO precursor games, MUDs. Even though they were full text-based games, they still had thousands of simultaneous users on a single server at their peak. I only know this because I played MUDs since the 80s. There probably was RMT issues in games all the way back then, but I didn't discover until the mid 90s why some players were decked out better than me even though they grinded less.
RMT and drug using should not be compared. Using drugs is a victimless crime. RMT has real effects on the players and economy of a game. And both have very different needs to solve. Drug use is strongly correlated with poverty and lack of viable health care, especially mental health. RMT is correlated with lack of a dev run RMT shop or proper means to regulate it.

My Biggest concern with AoC is their systems are too restrictive in nature and only a small subset of the player base, gets to participate in large portions of the game ala New World Territory Wars. I'm not an advocate for everyone should be able to do everything, but certain activities being walled off hasn't helped player retention in previous MMO's.

The absolute, baseline problem with AoC's game design is that it attempts to deny the reality of how economies work.
As you said in this video, stuff in the game is going to have a value in RL $$ placed on it. There is no way to prevent people from simply exchanging USD for in-game items via middlemen, and so from the get-go, the premise of the game falls flat on it's face.
The *ONLY* way to keep RL currencies out of MMOs is by hard locking everything so that you simply cannot trade with other players, and even then, RL $$ still creeps in by paying farmers to play your account and gain resources that way.
The concept of "sandbox" MMOs where economy related stuff matters is just a failed concept due to this. Unless players are completely happy with being steamrolled by competing players that have simply exchanged USD for their advantage (read: they are not), someone is always going to be unhappy.
I suppose if the AoC team put in a LOT of investment to statistical analysis and AI training to try to catch the *buyers* and hard-ban them for life, they may be able to avoid the problem somewhat.. but I doubt they have the money, and from their community discussions so far, they *definitely* do not have the motivation or awareness of the problem they are about to step into.
